Adhesions occur with a high incidence after intra-abdominal surgery but can also develop due to infections, radiation or for idiopathic reasons. The formation of adhesions is initiated by tissue damage and is the result of peritoneal tissue repair involving the activation of the inflammatory system and the coagulation cascade. Acute small bowel obstruction is one of the most common complications and should be diagnosed rapidly using clinical examination and radiological imaging. A complete obstruction is life threatening and in a high percentage of patients requires rapid surgical intervention by laparotomy or laparoscopy depending on the clinical situation and the patients history. Despite numerous investigations, there is no reliable, commonly used method to prevent intra-abdominal adhesions. Minimizing tissue damage and foreign body exposure, avoiding spillage of intestinal and biliary contents as well as a laparoscopic approach seem to have a beneficial effect on the formation of intra-abdominal adhesions.

Data on practice and quality of postoperative pain treatment by anaesthesiologists after ambulatory surgery are sparse. The current survey enrolled anaesthesiologists in private practice who were responsible for pain therapy after ambulatory surgery. The aim of this investigation was to evaluate the implementation of the German S3 guidelines for acute and postoperative pain therapy in the outpatient setting.

Giulio Cesare Aranzio in Italian (Julius Caesar Arantius in Latin) has not received full acclaim for his achievements in the field of anatomy and surgery that remain unknown to most physicians. His anatomical books Observationes Anatomicas, and De Humano Foetu Opusculum and surgical books De Tumoribus Secundum Locos Affectos and Hippocratis librum de vulneribus capitis commentarius brevis printed in Latin and additional existing literature on Aranzio from medical history books and journals were analysed extensively. Aranzio became Professor of Anatomy and Surgery at the University of Bologna in 1556. He established anatomy as a distinguished branch of medicine for the first time in medical history. Aranzio combined anatomy with a description of pathological processes. He discovered the 'Nodules of Aranzio' in the semilunar valves of the heart. He gave the first description of the superior levator palpebral and the coracobrachialis muscles. Aranzio wrote on surgical techniques for a wide spectrum of conditions that range from hydrocephalus, nasal polyp, goitre and tumours to phimosis, ascites, haemorrhoids, anal abscess and fistulae, and much more. Aranzio had an extensive knowledge in surgery and anatomy based in part on the ancient Greek and his contemporaries in the 16th century but essentially on his personal experience and practice.

The purpose of the present study was to compare conventional intraoral periapical radiographs (PA) with limited cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) for evaluation of mandibular molars prior to apical surgery. The apical extent and homogeneity of the root canal fillings (RCF) as well as the number of root canals were examined.

The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the thickness and the anatomic characteristics of the Schneiderian membrane and cortical bone using limited cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scannning in patients referred for planning of apical surgery of maxillary molars.

Purpose Orthognathic surgery has the objective of altering facial balance to achieve esthetic results in patients who have severe disharmony of the jaws. The purpose was to quantify the soft tissue changes after orthognathic surgery, as well as to assess the differences in 3D soft tissue changes in the middle and lower third of the face between the 1- and 2-jaw surgery groups, in mandibular prognathism patients. Materials and Methods We assessed soft tissue changes of patients who have been diagnosed with mandibular prognathism and received either isolated mandibular surgery or bimaxillary surgery. The quantitative surface displacement was assessed by superimposing preoperative and postoperative volumetric images. An observer measured a surface-distance value that is shown as a contour line. Differences between the groups were determined by the Mann-Whitney U test. The Spearman correlation coefficient was used to evaluate a potential correlation between patients' surgical and cephalometric variables and soft tissue changes after orthognathic surgery in each group. Results There were significant differences in the middle third of the face between the 1- and 2-jaw surgery groups. Soft tissues in the lower third of the face changed in both surgery groups, but not significantly. The correlation patterns were more evident in the lower third of the face. Conclusion The overall soft tissue changes of the midfacial area were more evident in the 2-jaw surgery group. In 2-jaw surgery, significant changes would be expected in the midfacial area, but caution should be exercised in patients who have a wide alar base.
