The aim of the study was to determine the prevalence and variables associated with the pattern of risky health behavior (PRHB) among adolescent students in Cartagena, Colombia. A cross-sectional study was designed to investigate PRHB in a random cluster sample of students from middle and high schools. The associations were adjusted by logistic regression. A total of 2,625 students participated in this research, with ages from 10 to 20 years, mean=13.8 years (SD=2.0), and 54.3% were women. A total of 332 students reported PRHB (12.7%, 95%CI 11.4–14.0). Age over 15 years (OR=2.19, 95%CI 1.72–2.79), not being heterosexual (OR=1.98, 95%CI 1.36-2.87), poor/mediocre academic performance (OR=1.87, 95%CI 1.47–2.38), family dysfunction (OR=1.78, 95%CI 1.40–2.28) and male gender (OR=1.58, 95%CI 1.24–2.01) were associated with PRHB. One in every eight students presented a PRHB. It is important to pay greater attention to students who are over 15 years of age, male, not heterosexual, with a poor/mediocre academic performance and a dysfunctional family.

Social organizational responsibility (SOR) is an increasingly discussed subject amongst several sectors and it’s considered as extremely important on organization management. Thus, it’s important to identify the way the organizations and its managers understand and assume their commitment with the stakeholders, as well as to bring up their interest for the benefits and advantages that they may obtain with the social responsibility management practice on the organizations. Although the SOR practices are still considered as a recent subject in Cape Verde, it’s already noticeable the organizations actions growth towards a fairer, responsible and transparent society. Aiming to identify the capeverdian social organizational responsibility practices on its economical, social and environmental string, this written presentation includes a quantitative and qualitative analysis, with closed questions, completed by open ones. It was therefore performed an explanatory-descriptive research for the organizations, each chosen regarding their notoriety and strategic position for the country’s development. Amongst the main results we may enhance the concern on environmental issues, the respect for the Labour law and the regular support for the communities. From the obtained results and the analysis done, we may conclude that the SOR culture on the Capeverdian organizations is still considered as quite insipient. With this written presentation, it’s expected to explain the social organizational responsibility strategic character, as well as to enhance the posterior reflections in order to implement a cultural change, influencing the managers, co-workers and remaining stakeholders to develop their interest on the subject, once the SOR should not only be some big companies issue, but instead, one regarding all of us.

BACKGROUND: Clients of street sex workers may be at higher risk for HIV infection than the general population. Furthermore, there is a lack of knowledge regarding HIV testing of clients of sex workers in developed countries. METHOD: This pilot study assessed the feasibility and acceptance of rapid HIV testing by the clients of street-based sex workers in Lausanne, Switzerland. For 5 evenings, clients in cars were stopped by trained field staff for face-to-face interviews focusing on sex-related HIV risk behaviors and HIV testing history. The clients were then offered a free anonymous rapid HIV test in a bus parked nearby. Rapid HIV testing and counselling were performed by experienced nurse practitioners. Clients with reactive tests were offered confirmatory testing, medical evaluation, and care in our HIV clinic. RESULT: We intercepted 144 men, 112 (77.8%) agreed to be interviewed. Among them, 50 (46.6%) had never been tested for HIV. A total of 31 (27.7%) rapid HIV tests were performed, 16 (51.6%) in clients who had not previously been tested. None were reactive. Initially, 19 (16.9%) additional clients agreed to HIV testing but later declined due to the 40-minute queue for testing. CONCLUSION: This pilot study showed that rapid HIV testing in the red light district of Lausanne was feasible, and that the clients of sex workers accepted testing at an unexpectedly high rate. This setting seems particularly appropriate for targeted HIV screening, since more than 40% of the clients had not previously been tested for HIV even though they engaged in sex-related HIV risk behaviour.

Excessive salt intake increases the risk of developing hypertension and cardiovascular disease. Sodium intake remains high both in developed and emerging countries. The Swiss Federal Office of Public Health has ordered a national survey on the salt intake in Switzerland, realized in different centers. This article presents the results of the awareness of the Swiss population concerning the relationship between excessive salt intake and health. This survey reveals a lack of knowledge regarding the association between high salt intake and cardiovascular disease, the sodium content of usual food, and the recommended daily value of sodium intake. Strategies to reduce salt consumption need to be reinforced by collaborations between health authorities and health care professionals.

Evidence-based medicine has enabled to approach disease in a more rational and scientific way. Clinical research has identified behaviours and risk factors that could cause disease often "silent" at the beginning, such as diabetes. Despite the clear impact of these evidences on public health, it seems that the individual risk perception level remains weak. To mention as well, the health professionals very often have a different views, which makes it difficult to communicate the risk with patients. In this article we describe the principles of risk perception, the diabetes related risk perception concerning cardiovascular complications, and suggest some practical strategies and tools which could improve risk communication in the everyday practice.

The ill effects of second-hand smoke are now well documented. To protect the population from exposure to tobacco smoke, comprehensive smoking bans are necessary as expressed in the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control and its guidelines. Switzerland has only a partial smoking ban full of exceptions which has been in effect since 2010, which reproduces the so-called Spanish model. In September 2012, the Swiss citizens refused a proposal for a more comprehensive ban. This case study examines the reasons behind this rejection and draws some lessons that can be learnt from it.

Since the second half of the 1990s, knowledge management has taken shape and has been firmly consolidated as a new discipline within the realm of organisations. The principal objective of this work is to determine whether content management systems (CMS) can become the most appropriate technological standard for consolidating this field. The article describes and analyses the major functions (publishing and exploitation) of these new systems. It then examines the field of knowledge management ¿what are the different types of knowledge that we can find within an organisational context¿ and then identifies and analyses the operations critical to managing it appropriately. The article concludes by evaluating the extent to which technological solutions provided by CMS can assist in properly implementing these critical operations.
