The objective of this thesis is the exploration and characterization of novel Au nanorod-semiconductor nanowire hybrid nanostructures. I provide a comprehensive bottom-up approach in which, starting from the synthesis and theoretical investigation of the optical properties of Au nanorods, I design, nanofabricate and characterize Au nanorods-semiconductor nanowire hybrid nanodevices with novel optoelectronic capabilities compared to the non-hybrid counterpart. In this regards, I first discuss the seed-mediated protocols to synthesize Au nanorods with different sizes and the influence of nanorod geometries and non-homogeneous surrounding medium on the optical properties investigated by theoretical simulation. Novel methodologies for assembling Au nanorods on (i) a Si/SiO2 substrate with highly-ordered architecture and (ii) on semiconductor nanowires with spatial precision are developed and optimized. By exploiting these approaches, I demonstrate that Raman active modes of an individual ZnO nanowire can be detected in non-resonant conditions by exploring the longitudinal plasmonic resonance mediation of chemical-synthesized Au nanorods deposited on the nanowire surface otherwise not observable on bare ZnO nanowire. Finally, nanofabrication and detailed electrical characterization of ZnO nanowire field-effect transistor (FET) and optoelectronic properties of Au nanorods - ZnO nanowire FET tunable near-infrared photodetector are investigated. In particular we demonstrated orders of magnitude enhancement in the photocurrent intensity in the explored range of wavelengths and 40 times faster time response compared to the bare ZnO FET detector. The improved performance, attributed to the plasmonicmediated hot-electron generation and injection mechanism underlying the photoresponse is investigated both experimentally and theoretically. The miniaturized, tunable and integrated capabilities offered by metal nanorodssemicondictor nanowire device architectures presented in this thesis work could have an important impact in many application fields such as opto-electronic sensors, photodetectors and photovoltaic devices and open new avenues for designing of novel nanoscale optoelectronic devices.

A supersonic expansion containing acetylene seeded into Ar and produced from a circular nozzle is investigated using CW/cavity ring down spectroscopy, in the 1.5 μm range. The results, also involving experiments with pure acetylene and acetylene-He expansions, as well as slit nozzles, demonstrate that the denser central section in the expansion is slightly heated by the formation of acetylene aggregates, resulting into a dip in the monomer absorption line profiles. Acetylene-Ar aggregates are also formed at the edge of the circular nozzle expansion cone. © 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In spectra of jet-cooled C2H2 recorded with an FTIR spectrometer, the ν5, ν4 + ν5, ν3 and ν2 + ν4 + ν5 bands all exhibit an intensity distribution corresponding to ∼6 K for rotation, with no evidence of nuclear spin conversion. Spectra of C2H2 isolated in solid p-H2 show no evidence of rotation of C2H2. The strong interaction between ν3 and ν2 + ν4 + ν5 in the gas phase is diminished in solid p-H2. Lines associated with dimer, trimer and tetramer of C2H2 are identified. Spectral features characteristic of solid state acetylene are observed under jet-cooled conditions. © 2007 Elsevier B.V. We developed a ratiometric method capable of estimating total hemoglobin concentration from optically measured diffuse reflectance spectra. The three isosbestic wavelength ratio pairs that best correlated to total hemoglobin concentration independent of saturation and scattering were 545/390, 452/390, and 529/390 nm. These wavelength pairs were selected using forward Monte Carlo simulations which were used to extract hemoglobin concentration from experimental phantom measurements. Linear regression coefficients from the simulated data were directly applied to the phantom data, by calibrating for instrument throughput using a single phantom. Phantoms with variable scattering and hemoglobin saturation were tested with two different instruments, and the average percent errors between the expected and ratiometrically-extracted hemoglobin concentration were as low as 6.3%. A correlation of r = 0.88 between hemoglobin concentration extracted using the 529/390 nm isosbestic ratio and a scalable inverse Monte Carlo model was achieved for in vivo dysplastic cervical measurements (hemoglobin concentrations have been shown to be diagnostic for the detection of cervical pre-cancer by our group). These results indicate that use of such a simple ratiometric method has the potential to be used in clinical applications where tissue hemoglobin concentrations need to be rapidly quantified in vivo.

Factors influencing apoptosis of vertebrate eggs and early embryos have been studied in cell-free systems and in intact embryos by analyzing individual apoptotic regulators or caspase activation in static samples. A novel method for monitoring caspase activity in living Xenopus oocytes and early embryos is described here. The approach, using microinjection of a near-infrared caspase substrate that emits fluorescence only after its proteolytic cleavage by active effector caspases, has enabled the elucidation of otherwise cryptic aspects of apoptotic regulation. In particular, we show that brief caspase activity (10 min) is sufficient to cause apoptotic death in this system. We illustrate a cytochrome c dose threshold in the oocyte, which is lowered by Smac, a protein that binds thereby neutralizing the inhibitor of apoptosis proteins. We show that meiotic oocytes develop resistance to cytochrome c, and that the eventual death of oocytes arrested in meiosis is caspase-independent. Finally, data acquired through imaging caspase activity in the Xenopus embryo suggest that apoptosis in very early development is not cell-autonomous. These studies both validate this assay as a useful tool for apoptosis research and reveal subtleties in the cell death program during early development. Moreover, this method offers a potentially valuable screening modality for identifying novel apoptotic regulators.

By analyzing measured infrared absorption of pure CH4 gas under both "free" (large sample cell) and "confined" (inside the pores of a silica xerogel sample) conditions we give a demonstration that molecule-molecule and molecule-surface collisions lead to very different propensity rules for rotational-state changes. Whereas the efficiency of collisions to change the rotational state (observed through the broadening of the absorption lines) decreases with increasing rotational quantum number J for CH4-CH4 interactions, CH4-surface collisions lead to J-independent linewidths. In the former case, some (weak) collisions are inefficient whereas, in the latter case, a single collision is sufficient to remove the molecule from its initial rotational level. Furthermore, although some gas-phase collisions leave J unchanged and only modify the angular momentum orientation and/or symmetry of the level (as observed through the spectral effects of line mixing), this is not the case for the molecule-surface collisions since they always change J (in the studied J=0-14 range).

Space-borne thermal infrared instruments working in the nadir geometry are providing spectroscopic measurements of species that impact on the chemical composition of the atmosphere and on the climate forcing: H2O, CO2, N2O, CH4, CFCs, O3, and CO. The atmospheric abundances obtained from the analysis of IMG/ADEOS measurements are discussed in order to demonstrate the potential scientific return to be expected from future missions using advanced infrared nadir sounders. Some strengths and limitations of passive infrared remote sensing from space are illustrated. © 2003 European Geosciences Union.

Thermal fronts detected using multiple satellite sensors have been integrated to provide new information on the spatial and seasonal distribution of oceanic fronts in the North Atlantic. The branching of the North Atlantic Current (NAC) as it encounters the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR) is reflected in surface thermal fronts, which preferentially occur at the Charlie Gibbs Fracture Zone (CGFZ) and several smaller fracture zones. North of the CGFZ there are few thermal fronts, contrasting with the region to the south, where there are frequent surface thermal fronts that are persistent seasonally and interannually. The alignment of the fronts confirms that the shallower Reykjanes Ridge north of the CGFZ is more of a barrier to water movements than the ridge to the south. Comparison of front distributions with satellite altimetry data indicates that the MAR influence on deep ocean currents is also frequently exhibited in surface temperature. The improved spatial and temporal resolution of the front analysis has revealed consistent seasonality in the branching patterns. These results contribute to our understanding of the variability of the NAC, and the techniques for visualising oceanic fronts can be applied in other regions to reveal details of surface currents that cannot be resolved using satellite altimetry or in situ measurements.
