(i) The electronic and structural properties of boron doped graphene sheets, and (ii) the chemisorption processes of hydrogen adatoms on the boron doped graphene sheets have been examined by ab initio total energy calculations. In (i) we find that the structural deformations are very localized around the boron substitutional sites, and in accordance with previous studies (Endo et al 2001 J. Appl. Phys. 90 5670) there is an increase of the electronic density of states near the Fermi level. Our simulated scanning tunneling microscope (STM) images, for occupied states, indicate the formation of bright (triangular) spots lying on the substitutional boron (center) and nearest-neighbor carbon (edge) sites. Those STM images are attributed to the increase of the density of states within an energy interval of 0.5 eV below the Fermi level. For a boron concentration of similar to 2.4%, we find that two boron atoms lying on the opposite sites of the same hexagonal ring (B1-B2 configuration) represents the energetically most stable configuration, which is in contrast with previous theoretical findings. Having determined the energetically most stable configuration for substitutional boron atoms on graphene sheets, we next considered the hydrogen adsorption process as a function of the boron concentration, (ii). Our calculated binding energies indicate that the C-H bonds are strengthened near boron substitutional sites. Indeed, the binding energy of hydrogen adatoms forming a dimer-like structure on the boron doped B1-B2 graphene sheet is higher than the binding energy of an isolated H(2) molecule. Since the formation of the H dimer-like structure may represent the initial stage of the hydrogen clustering process on graphene sheets, we can infer that the formation of H clusters is quite likely not only on clean graphene sheets, which is in consonance with previous studies (Hornekaer et al 2006 Phys. Rev. Lett. 97 186102), but also on B1-B2 boron doped graphene sheets. However, for a low concentration of boron atoms, the formation of H dimer structures is not expected to occur near a single substitutional boron site. That is, the formation (or not) of H clusters on graphene sheets can be tuned by the concentration of substitutional boron atoms.

Films of amorphous aluminium nitride (AlN) were prepared by conventional radio frequency sputtering of an Al + Cr target in a plasma of pure nitrogen. The Cr-to-Al relative area determines the Cr content, which remained in the similar to 0-3.5 at% concentration range in this study. Film deposition was followed by thermal annealing of the samples up to 1050 degrees C in an atmosphere of oxygen and by spectroscopic characterization through energy dispersive x-ray spectrometry, photoluminescence and optical transmission measurements. According to the experimental results, the optical-electronic properties of the Cr-containing AlN films are highly influenced by both the Cr concentration and the temperature of the thermal treatments. In fact, thermal annealing at 1050 degrees C induces the development of structures that, because of their typical size and distinctive spectral characteristics, were designated by ruby microstructures (RbMSs). These RbMSs are surrounded by a N-rich environment in which Cr(3+) ions exhibit luminescent features not present in other Cr(3+)-containing systems such as ruby, emerald or alexandrite. The light emissions shown by the RbMSs and surroundings were investigated according to the Cr concentration and temperature of measurement, allowing the identification of several Cr(3+)-related luminescent lines. The main characteristics of these luminescent lines and corresponding excitation-recombination processes are presented and discussed in view of a detailed spectroscopic analysis.

The surface activity of salts added to water is Air orders of magnitude lower than that of surfactants. Sodium trifluoromethanesulfonate (NaTf) produced a change in surface tension. with concentration, Delta gamma/Delta c, of -13.2 mN.L/m.mol. This value is ca. 4-fold larger than those of simple salts and that of methanesulfonate. This unexpected surface effect suggested that positively charged micelles containing Tf could exhibit interesting properties. Dodecyltrimethylammonium triflate (DTATf) had a higher Kraft temperature (37 degrees C) and a lower cmc (5 x 10(-3)M) and degree of dissociation (0.11) than the chloride and bromide salts of DTA. Above the Kraft temperature, at a characteristic temperature t(1), the addition of NaTf above 0.05 M. to a DTATf solution induced phase separation. By increasing the temperature of the two-phase system to above t(1), a homogeneous, transparent solution was obtained at a characteristic temperature t(2). These results, together with well-known triflate properties, led us to suggest that the Tf ion pairs With DTA and that the -CF(3) group may be dehydrated in the interfacial region, resulting in new and interesting self-aggregated structures.

Mitochondria are the central coordinators of energy metabolism and alterations in their function and number have long been associated with metabolic disorders such as obesity, diabetes and hyperlipidemias. Since oxidative phosphorylation requires an electrochemical gradient across the inner mitochondrial membrane, ion channels in this membrane certainly must play an important role in the regulation of energy metabolism. However, in many experimental settings, the relationship between the activity of mitochondrial ion transport and metabolic disorders is still poorly understood. This review briefly summarizes some aspects of mitochondrial H(+) transport (promoted by uncoupling proteins, UCPs). Ca(2+) and K(+) uniporters which may be determinant in metabolic disorders. Hydrogen peroxide was determined in oral antiseptic and bleach samples using a flow-injection system with amperometric detection. A glassy carbon electrode modified by electrochemical deposition of ruthenium oxide hexacyanoferrate was used as working electrode and a homemade Ag/AgCl (saturated KCl) electrode and a platinum wire were used as reference and counter electrodes, respectively. The electrocatalytic reduction process allowed the determination of hydrogen peroxide at 0.0 V. A linear relationship between the cathodic peak current and concentration of hydrogen peroxide was obtained in the range 10-5000 mu mol L(-1) with detection and quantification limits of 1.7 (S/N = 3) and 5.9 (S/N = 10) mu mol L(-1), respectively. The repeatability of the method was evaluated using a 500 mu mol L(-1) hydrogen peroxide solution, the value obtained being 1.6% (n = 14). A sampling rate of 112 samples h(-1) was achieved at optimised conditions. The method was employed for the quantification of hydrogen peroxide in two commercial samples and the results were in agreement with those obtained by using a recommended procedure.

Ionic liquids, ILs, carrying long-chain alkyl groups are surface active, SAIIs. We investigated the micellar properties of the SAIL 1-hexadecyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride, C(16)MeImCl, and compared the data with 1-hexadecylpyridinium chloride, C(16)PYCl, and benzyl (3-hexadecanoylaminoethyl)dimethylammonium chloride, C(15)AEtBzMe(2)Cl. The properties compared include critical micelle concentration, cmc; thermodynamic parameters of micellization; empirical polarity and water concentrations in the interfacial regions. In the temperature range from 15 to 75 degrees C, the order of cmc in H(2)O and in D(2)O is C(16)PYCl > C(16)MeImCl > C(15)AEtBzMe(2)Cl. The enthalpies of micellization, Delta H(mic)(degrees), were calculated indirectly from by use of the van`t Hoff treatment; directly by isothermal titration calorimetry, ITC. Calculation of the degree of counter-ion dissociation, alpha(mic), from conductivity measurements, by use of Evans equation requires knowledge of the aggregation numbers, N(agg), at different temperatures. We have introduced a reliable method for carrying out this calculation, based on the volume and length of the monomer, and the dependence of N(agg) on temperature. The N(agg) calculated for C(16)PyCl and C(16)MeImCl were corroborated by light scattering measurements. Conductivity- and ITC-based Delta H(mic)(degrees) do not agree; reasons for this discrepancy are discussed. Micelle formation is entropy driven: at all studied temperatures for C(16)MeImCl; only up to 65 degrees C for C(16)PyCl; and up to 55 degrees C for C(15)AEtBzMe(2)Cl. All these data can be rationalized by considering hydrogen-bonding between the head-ions of the monomers in the micellar aggregate. The empirical polarities and concentrations of interfacial water were found to be independent of the nature of the head-group. (C) 2010 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

In this work, a series of 10 structural procaine analogs have been synthesized in order to investigate the structural features affecting the stability of ion pair formation and its influence on the lipophilicity of ionizable compounds. The structural variation within this series was focused on the terminal nitrogen substituents and on the intermediate chain linkage nature. The hydrophobic parameters log P(n) and log P(i) (partition coefficient of the neutral and ionic species, respectively), as well as the ionization constants pK(a) and pK(a)(oct), were obtained from log D-pH profiles measured at pH values ranging from 2 to 12. The difference between log P(i) and log P(n) values (i.e. difflog P) of each prepared compound was considered a measure of the stability of ion pair formation. In this set, the difflog P values varied nearly over one log unit, ranging from -2.40 to -3.37. It has been observed that the presence of hydrogen bonding groups (especially donor) and low steric hindrance around the terminal amine ionizable group increases the relative lipophilicity of the ionic species as compared to the corresponding neutral species. These results were interpreted as due to the increased stability of ion pairs of the compounds bearing these structural features. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Raman and IR experiments have been carried out on formamide (FA) and pyridine (Py) mixtures at different compositions. The appearance of a new Raman band at 996 cm(-1) (nu(1) region of Py), whose intensity depends on the FA concentration, is assigned to an FA: Py adduct and this result is in excellent agreement with those of other authors who employed noisy light-based coherent Raman scattering spectroscopy (I((2)) CARS). Another band at 1587 cm(-1) (nu(8) region of Py) has been observed for the first time by using Raman and IR spectroscopies. Its intensity shows the same dependence on the FA concentration and this fact allows us to also attribute it to an FA: Py adduct. The good relationship between the Raman and IR data demonstrates the potential of the vibrational spectroscopy for this kind of study. Owing to higher absolute Raman scattering cross section, the nu(1) region of Py has been chosen for the quantitative analysis and a stoichiometry of 1 : 1 FA: Py is reported. The experimental data are very well supported by the density functional theory (OFT) calculation, which was employed for the first time to the present system. Furthermore, the actual investigation shows an excellent agreement with those reported from computational calculations for similar systems. A comparison with our previous studies confirms that: the solvent dielectric constant determines the stoichiometry of a given Lewis acid-base adduct in the infinite dilution limit. The electrocatalytic reduction of NO3- (aq) over platinum has been investigated in sulfuric acid solutions with proton concentrations between 1 mM and 50 mM. Cyclic voltammetry indicates that for [H+] < 10 mM, NO3- (aq) is reduced in two distinct regions of potential: one reduction peak occurs at approximately 0.1 V vs. RHE and one occurs at -0.13 V vs. RHE. This second reduction peak has never before been observed, and is not present for proton concentrations >10 mM, where hydrogen electroreduction prevails below 0.0 V vs. RHE. Chronoamperometry shows that the kinetics of the two reduction peaks are distinct, suggesting that the two reduction peaks may correspond to the evolution of different products. Results are discussed in the context of tuning the product selectivity of the electrocatalytic reduction of NO3- (aq). (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

MgO based refractory castables draw wide technological interest because they have the versatility and installation advantages of monolithic refractories with intrinsic MgO properties, such as high refractoriness and resistance to basic slag corrosion. Nevertheless, MgO easily reacts with water to produce Mg(OH)(2), which is followed by a large volumetric expansion, limiting its application in refractory castables. In order to develop solutions to minimize this effect, a better understanding of the main variables involved in this reaction is required. In this work, the influence of temperature, as well as the impact of the chemical equilibrium shifting (known as the common-ion effect), on MgO hydration was evaluated. Ionic conductivity measurements at different temperatures showed that the MgO hydration reaction is accelerated with increasing temperature. Additionally, different compounds were added to evaluate their influence on the reaction rate. Among them, CaCl(2) delayed the reaction, whereas KOH showed an opposite behavior. MgCl(2) and MgSO(4) presented similar results and two other distinct effects, reaction delay and acceleration, which depended on their concentration in the suspensions. The results were evaluated by considering the kinetics and the thermodynamics of the reaction, and the mechanical damages in the samples that was caused by the hydration reaction. The city of Natal comprises an area of about 170 km² (65,63 squares miles). The Dunas-Barreiras Aquifer is the most important reservoir of the coastal basin of RN. It is being responsible for the water supplying of about 70% of the population, however, due to the sewage disposal system by cesspools and drains, it is presently affected in a great extent by nitrates contamination. Thus, the present work proposes to research the utilization of contaminated water by nitrates of this fountainhead and find cost of the potable water through the ionic exchange technology. This technology consists in the removal of mineral salts by the exchange of cations for one ion of hydrogen (H+), through the passage of water by cationic resin bed and, secondly, by the exchange of the anions for hydroxyl ions (OH-) through a anionic resin bed. The obtained results have showed the waters derived from fountains, big water holes and shallow wells were microbiologically contaminated, while the waters derived from deep wells (above 70 m 76,58 yards) were free of contamination. Thus, only these ones are suitable to the use of ionic technology. The experiments were conducted with the resin IMAC-HP-555 such as kinetic, thermodynamic, and adsorption by fixed bed studies, being obtained several project variables for the experimental column, as follow: work temperature of 25oC; resin maximum capacity maximum e mean of adsorption ==0,01692 g NO3-1/g R e 0,0110 g NO3-1/g R, respectively. On the experimental column were performed breakthrough tests which pointed for an average ideal average speed of work of 13.2 m / h, with an average efficiency of 45% of adsorption, an optimal concentration of NaCl desorption of 8%, and an ideal desorption time of 80 minutes for the equilibrium conditions of water from the Dunas-Barreiras aquifer. Scale projection for ion-exchange column for denitrification, for these variables, using a computer modeling programme, to project the column of ion exchange ROREX-420/2000, obtained a cost for the drinking water denitrified by this system of R$ 0,16 / m3

The [(Mn4O5)-O-IV(terpy)(4)(H2O)(2)](6+) complex, show great potential for electrode modification by electropolymerization using cyclic voltammetry. The voltammetric behavior both in and after electropolymerization process were also discussed, where the best condition of electropolymerization was observed for low scan rate and 50 potential cycles. A study in glass electrode for better characterization of polymer was also performed. Electrocatalytic process by metal centers of the conducting polymer in H2O2 presence with an increase of anodic current at 0.85 V vs. SCE can be observed. The sensor showed great response from 9.9 x 10(-5) to 6.4 x 10(-4) mol L-1 concentration range with a detection limit of 8.8 x 10(-5) mol L-1, where the electrocatalytic mechanism was based on oxidation of H2O2 to H2O with consequently reduction of Mn-IV to Mn-III. After, the Mn-III ions are oxidized electrochemically to Mn-IV ions. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd .... Selection and/or peer-review under responsibility of the Symposium Cracoviense Sp. z.o.o.

The binding selectivity of the M(phen)(edda) (M = Cu, Co, Ni, Zn; phen = 1,10-phenanthroline, edda = ethylenediaminediacetic acid) complexes towards ds(CG)(6), ds(AT)(6) and ds(CGCGAATTCGCG) B-form oligonucleotide duplexes were studied by CD spectroscopy and molecular modeling. The binding mode is intercalation and there is selectivity towards AT-sequence and stacking preference for A/A parallel or diagonal adjacent base steps in their intercalation. The nucleolytic properties of these complexes were investigated and the factors affecting the extent of cleavage were determined to be: concentration of complex, the nature of metal(11) ion, type of buffer, pH of buffer, incubation time, incubation temperature, and the presence of hydrogen peroxide or ascorbic acid as exogenous reagents. The fluorescence property of these complexes and its origin were also investigated. The crystal structure of the Zn(phen)(edda) complex is reported in which the zinc atom displays a distorted trans-N4O2 octahedral geometry; the crystal packing features double layers of complex molecules held together by extensive hydrogen bonding that inter-digitate with adjacent double layers via pi...pi interactions between 1,10-phenanthroline residues. The structure is compared with that of the recently described copper(II) analogue and, with the latter, included in molecular modeling. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
