Shapleigh's notes are written on the verso of a Harvard commencement theses broadside from 1792. Additional commencement theses broadsides from 1792 are available in the Harvard University Commencement theses, quaestiones, and orders of exercises collection (HUC 6642).

[Correspondence originally sewn into the front of Volume 1], 1771-1783

This folder contains three letters originally sewn to the front inside cover of Volume 1 of Sewall's bound lectures (HUG 1782 Box 3). A fourth letter is still glued to the inside front cover and listed with the volume. The three letters consist of a letter from B. Kennicott to Stephen Sewall, May 14, 1771 and two letters written in French from Antoine Court de Gébelin to Stephen Sewall, one written on March 3, 1780, and the second received on November 18, 1783. The letter from Benjamin Kennicott acknowledges Sewall's letter to him and offers instructions for paying for a subscription to Kennicott's work. A portion of the missing text from Box 1 can be found in this folder.

A Translation of the oration deliver'd at the funeral of Rev'd. President Holyoke, by Mr. Sewall, Professor of ye Languages, at Cambridge, 1769 June 25

This small 11-page pamphlet contains a handwritten English translation of Professor Sewall's funeral oration for President Edward Holyoke on June 25, 1769. The translation begins, "Whereas the Summer advancing when we survey the Earth mantled in green..." The copy includes a small number of edits.

Small pamphlet bound in brown paper containing a handwritten nine-page copy of Stephen Sewall's funeral oration for Hollis Professor Mathematics and Natural Philosophy John Winthrop delivered May 8, 1779. The title page includes the inscription: "The lips of the wise disperse knowledge,/ A Man shall be comended [sic] according to his Wisdom -- Solomon."

[Power of attorney between Stephen Sewall and Thomas Wigglesworth], 1794 August 21

This one-page printed form appoints Thomas Wigglesworth as the "true and lawful Attorney" for Stephen Sewall. The form is notarized by Samuel Barrett and witnessed by Barrett and his daughter Peggy Barrett.

[Copy of a letter from Mehetabel Preble to her son Stephen Sewall], 1768 January 23

Handwritten copy of a January 23, 1768 letter from Mehetabel Preble to her son Stephen Sewall transcribed by Sewall. The bottom of the page is cut off and some text is missing. In the letter, Preble mentions Sewall's news of the birth of her granddaughter, the death of one of her sons, and discusses her health and approaching death, and the absence of God's "divine light." The item includes the note: "NB. The above letter was rec'd 18th March, 1768. My mother died the 4th day of the same month," and an extract from a February 29, 1768 letter from "Brother Crosby" regarding Preble's illness and anticipation of death.

C. Daily pocket journal of John and Hannah Winthrop, 1766-1779

Small printed daily pocket journal repurposed by both John and Hannah between 1766 and 1779 to record household accounts including livestock pasturing, income received, and payments to servants, merchants, and tradesmen for food, livestock, clothing, linen, etc. Many of the pages are unused. The January-April pages contain account records from 1766-1779, one page in June has a few accounting notes from September 1779, the rest of June-November is empty, and three books are listed on a November page. The last three calendar pages contain lists of books in Hannah's handwriting dated 1773 and August 1768.
