The molecular structure of 1,1'-bi(acenaphthen-1-ylidene)-2,2'-dione 1, a potential building-block for the synthesis of fullerene fragments, has been investigated by X-ray crystallography and semi-empirical (AM1 and PM3) calculations. There is a good agreement between the calculated and crystal structure which is essentially planar and has E-configuration. In the solid state, molecules of 1 pack in an interesting manner as corrugated sheets sustained by a network of C-H ... O hydrogen bonds and resulting in the formation of tetrameric loops. While steric factors limit the reactivity of the carbonyl groups in 1, the ene double bond of the ene-dione moiety present in it exhibits propensity toward [4 + 2]-cycloadditions to furnish novel and highly compressed polycycles 8-10.

Crystal structures of the active-site mutants D99A and H48Q and the calcium-loop mutant D49E of bovine phospholipase A(2) have been determined at around 1.9 Angstrom resolution. The D99A mutant is isomorphous to the orthorhombic recombinant enzyme, space group P2(1)2(1)2(1), The H48Q and the calcium-loop mutant D49E are isomorphous to the trigonal recombinant enzyme, space group P3(1)21, The two active-site mutants show no major structural perturbations. The structural water is absent in D99A and, therefore, the hydrogen-bonding scheme is changed. In H48Q, the catalytic water is present and hydrogen bonded to Gln48 N, but the second water found in native His48 is absent. In the calcium-loop mutant D49E, the two water molecules forming the pentagonal bipyramid around calcium are absent and only one O atom of the Glu49 carboxylate group is coordinated to calcium, resulting in only four ligands.

The Co(II)TPP(Py) complex was used as an efficient dioxygen carrier for the radical polymerization of 1,1-diphenylethylene (DPE), which has a low ceiling temperature, at ambient temperature and low oxygen pressure. The mechanism of polymerization is discussed' on the basis of kinetic data, W-vis, ESR, and H-1 NMR studies. The rate of polymerization (RP) and number-average molecular weights (M) of poly(1,1-diphenylethylene peroxide) (PDPEP) are higher and the polydispersity is lower than in 2,2'-azobis(isobutyronitrile) (AIBN) initiated polymerization. PDPEP was further. used as a macroinitiator for the polymerization of MMA. The polymerization obeys classical kinetics. The K-2 value of the PDPEP has been determined from the slope of R-P(2) VS [M](2)[I], which reveals that it can also be used at higher temperature for the polymerization. An "active" PMMA was also synthesized, containing initiating segments in the polymer backbone.

Several secondary alcohols undergo the Mitsunobu reaction with triphenylphosphine, diethyl azodicarboxylate and (1S)-(+)-ketopinic acid (0.5 equiv. each relative to alcohol) in CH2Cl2 solution at -23degreesC, to furnish the chiral secondary alcohol and its ketopinate ester (d.e. >95%,). Chromatographic separation of these and subsequent hydrolysis of the ketopinate ester (KOH EtOH/0degreesC) provides the chiral secondary alcohol in overall yields of similar to75% and e.e. of similar to80%. When the above Mitsunobu reaction is performed with 1 equiv. of all the reactants. an effective dynamic kinetic resolution of the alcohol is observed in two cases, the ketopinate esters being isolated in 63 and 75% yields and >95% d.e. Electrochemical redox reactions of ferrous/ferric (Fe2+/Fe3+) and hydroquinone/quinone (H(2)Q/Q) were studied on Pt and polyaniline (PANI)-deposited Pt electrodes in 0.5 M H2SO4-supporting electrolyte by cyclic voltammetry and ac impedance spectroscopy. A comparison of the experimental data obtained with the Pt and PANI/Pt electrodes suggested that the reactions were catalyzed by the PANI. Based on a relative increase in peak currents of cyclic voltammograms, catalytic efficiency (gamma(cv)) of the PANI was defined. There was an increase in gamma(cv) with an increase of scan rate and a decrease of concentration of Fe2+/Fe3+ or H(2)Q. The complex plane impedance spectrum of the electrode consisted of a semicircle in high frequency range and a linear spike in low frequency range. The exchange current density (i(0)) calculated using the semicircle part of the impedance showed Butler-Volmer kinetics with respect to concentration dependence. From a relative increase of i(0) on the PANI/Pt electrode, catalytic efficiency (gamma(eis)) was evaluated. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

A simple thermodynamic analysis of the well-known Michaelis-Menten equation (MME) of enzyme catalysis is proposed that employs the chemical potential mu to follow the Gibbs free energy changes attending the formation of the enzyme-substrate complex and its turnover to the product. The main conclusion from the above analysis is that low values of the Michaelis constant KM and high values of the turnover number k(cat) are advantageous: this supports a simple algebraic analysis of the MME, although at variance with current thinking. Available data apparently support the above findings. It is argued that transition state stabilisation - rather than substrate distortion or proximity - is the key to enzyme catalysis.

Azophenol complexes of formulation [(η6-p-cymene)RuCl(Ln)] (1–6, n=1–6) were prepared by two synthetic methods involving either an oxygen insertion to the Ru---C bond in cycloruthenated precursors forming complexes 1 and 2 or from the reaction of [{(η6-p-cymene)RuCl}2(μ-Cl)2] with azophenol ligands (HL3–HL6) in the presence of sodium carbonate in CH2Cl2. The molecular structure of the 1-(phenylazo)-2-naphthol complex has been determined by X-ray crystallography. The complex has a η6-p-cymene group, a chloride and a bidentate N,O-donor azophenol ligand. The complexes have been characterized from NMR spectral data. The catalytic activity of the complexes has been studied for the conversion of acetophenone to the corresponding alcohol in the presence of KOH and isopropanol. Complexes 4 and 6 having a methoxy group attached to the ortho-position of the phenylazo moiety and 2 with a methyl group in the meta-position of the phenolic moiety show high percentage conversion (>84%).

This paper reports ab intio, DFT and transition state theory (TST) calculations on HF, HCI and CIF elimination reactions from CH2Cl-CH2F molecule. Both the ground state and the transition state for HX elimination reactions have been optimized at HF, MP2 and DFT calculations with 6-31G*, 6-31G** and 6-311++G** basis sets. In addition, CCSD(T) single point calculations were carried out with MP2/6-311++G** optimized geometry for more accurate determination of the energies of the minima and transition state, compared to the other methods employed here. Classical barriers are converted to Arrhenius activation energy by TST calculations for comparisons with experimental results. The pre-exponential factors, A, calculated at all levels of theory are significantly larger than the experimental values. For activation energy, E-a DFT gives good results for HF elimination, within 4-8 W mol(-1) from experimental values. None of the methods employed, including CCSD(T), give comparable results for HCI elimination reactions. However, rate constants calculated by CCSD(T) method are in very good agreement with experiment for HCI elimination and they are in reasonable agreement for HF elimination reactions. Due to the strong correlation between A and E., the rate constants could be fit to a lower A and E-a (as given by experimental fitting, corresponding to a tight TS) or to larger A and E-a (as given by high level ab initio calculations, corresponding to a loose TS). The barrier for CIF elimination is determined to be 607 U mol(-1) at HF level and it is unlikely to be important for CH2FCH2Cl. Results for other CH2X-CH2Y (X,Y = F/Cl) are included for comparison.

In the framework of a project aimed at developing a reliable hydrogen generator for mobile polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEFCs), particular emphasis has been addressed to the analysis of catalysts able to assure high activity and stability in transient operations (frequent start-up and shut-down cycles). In this paper, the catalytic performance of 1 at.% Pt/ceria samples prepared by coprecipitation, impregnation and combustion, has been evaluated in the partial oxidation of methane. Methane conversion and hydrogen selectivity of 96 and 99%, respectively, associated with high stability during 100h of reaction under operative conditions (start-up and shut-down cycles), have been obtained. We report an experimental study of a new type of turbulent flow that is driven purely by buoyancy. The flow is due to an unstable density difference, created using brine and water, across the ends of a long (length/diameter=9) vertical pipe. The Schmidt number Sc is 670, and the Rayleigh number (Ra) based on the density gradient and diameter is about 108. Under these conditions the convection is turbulent, and the time-averaged velocity at any point is ‘zero’. The Reynolds number based on the Taylor microscale, Reλ, is about 65. The pipe is long enough for there to be an axially homogeneous region, with a linear density gradient, about 6–7 diameters long in the midlength of the pipe. In the absence of a mean flow and, therefore, mean shear, turbulence is sustained just by buoyancy. The flow can be thus considered to be an axially homogeneous turbulent natural convection driven by a constant (unstable) density gradient. We characterize the flow using flow visualization and particle image velocimetry (PIV). Measurements show that the mean velocities and the Reynolds shear stresses are zero across the cross-section; the root mean squared (r.m.s.) of the vertical velocity is larger than those of the lateral velocities (by about one and half times at the pipe axis). We identify some features of the turbulent flow using velocity correlation maps and the probability density functions of velocities and velocity differences. The flow away from the wall, affected mainly by buoyancy, consists of vertically moving fluid masses continually colliding and interacting, while the flow near the wall appears similar to that in wall-bound shear-free turbulence. The turbulence is anisotropic, with the anisotropy increasing to large values as the wall is approached. A mixing length model with the diameter of the pipe as the length scale predicts well the scalings for velocity fluctuations and the flux. This model implies that the Nusselt number would scale as Ra1/2Sc1/2, and the Reynolds number would scale as Ra1/2Sc−1/2. The velocity and the flux measurements appear to be consistent with the Ra1/2 scaling, although it must be pointed out that the Rayleigh number range was less than 10. The Schmidt number was not varied to check the Sc scaling. The fluxes and the Reynolds numbers obtained in the present configuration are much higher compared to what would be obtained in Rayleigh–Bénard (R–B) convection for similar density differences.

The degradation kinetics of polycarbonate [poly(bisphenol A carbonate)] in benzene catalyzed by commercial (rutile) TiO2 (BET surface area = 11 m(2)/g), anatase TiO2 (156 m(2)/g), and 1 atom % Pt/TiO2 (111 m2/g), prepared by the solution combustion technique, was investigated at various temperatures (230-280 degreesC) and 50 atm. The time evolution of the molecular weight distribution (MWD) was determined by gel permeation chromatography (GPC) and modeled with continuous distribution kinetics to obtain the degradation rate coefficients. The rate coefficients for the catalytic degradation of polycarbonate increased by factors of 20, 3.5, and 1.3 compared to the rate coefficients for thermal degradation when catalyzed by nanosized TiO2 anatase, Pt/TiO2 anatase, and commercial TiO2, respectively, at 280 degreesC. The increased catalytic activity of combustion for synthesized TiO2 and 1% Pt/TiO2 might be due to the increased acidity and BET surface area. The activation energies, determined from the temperature dependencies of the rate coefficients, were 16.3, 21.5, and 39.1 kcal/mol for commercial TiO2, combustion-synthesized Pt/TiO2, and anatase TiO2, respectively.
