Superplastic bulging is the most successful application of superplastic forming (SPF) in industry, but the non-uniform wall thickness distribution of parts formed by it is a common technical problem yet to be overcome. Based on a rigid-viscoplastic finite element program developed by the authors, for simulation of the sheet superplastic forming process combined with the prediction of microstructure variations (such as grain growth and cavity growth), a simple and efficient preform design method is proposed and applied to the design of preform mould for manufacturing parts with uniform wall thickness. Examples of formed parts are presented here to demonstrate that the technology can be used to improve the uniformity of wall thickness to meet practical requirements. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. The relevance of endocrine-disrupting compounds as potential contaminants of drinking water is reviewed, particularly in the reuse of wastewater. Growing populations and increasing intensification of land and water use for industry and agriculture have increased the need to reclaim wastewater for reuse, including to supplement the drinking water supply. The variety of anthropogenic chemicals that have been identified as potential endocrine disruptors in the environment and the problems arising from their use as human and livestock pharmaceuticals, as agricultural chemicals and in industry are discussed. The potentially adverse impact of these chemicals on human health and the ecology of the natural environment are reviewed. Data for the removal of estrogenic compounds from wastewater treatment are presented, together with the comparative potencies of estrogenic compounds. The relative exposure to estrogens of women on oral contraceptives, hormone replacement therapy, and through food consumption is estimated. A brief overview of some methods available or under development for the assessment of estrogenic activity in environmental samples is provided. The review concludes with a discussion of the directions for further investigation, which include human epidemiology, methodology development, and wastewater monitoring. Despite decades of research, the takeup of formal methods for developing provably correct software in industry remains slow. One reason for this is the high cost of proof construction, an activity that, due to the complexity of the required proofs, is typically carried out using interactive theorem provers. In this paper we propose an agent-oriented architecture for interactive theorem proving with the aim of reducing the user interactions (and thus the cost) of constructing software verification proofs. We describe a prototype implementation of our architecture and discuss its application to a small, but non-trivial case study.

This paper describes the implementation of a TMR (Triple Modular Redundant) microprocessor system on a FPGA. The system exhibits true redundancy in that three instances of the same processor system (both software and hardware) are executed in parallel. The described system uses software to control external peripherals and a voter is used to output correct results. An error indication is asserted whenever two of the three outputs match or all three outputs disagree. The software has been implemented to conform to a particular safety critical coding guideline/standard which is popular in industry. The system was verified by injecting various faults into it.

The Undergraduate Site Learning Program (USLP) is an innovative work-based learning program that addresses the call to develop a broader set ofattributes in engineering graduates. Unlike cooperative education programs, site learning can give students full academic credit for their placement without extending the duration of the degree through the use of an innovative learning alignment model. A cenrralpart ofthis program is a unique course entitled Professional Development in which students articulate and reflect upon the lessons they leom while on placement in industry. Students spend the bulk ofa semester on-site often in remote locations, which requires a flexible approach to course operation and fosters independent learning. Thus the USLP challenges both staff and students and produces outcomes that bofh the alumni and industry value.

We investigate the performance of Gallager type error- correcting codes for Binary Symmetric Channels, where the code word comprises products of K bits selected from the original message and decoding is carried out utilizing a connectivity tensor with C connections per index. Shannon's bound for the channel capacity is recovered for large K and zero temperature when the code rate K/C is finite. Close to optimal error-correcting capability, with improved decoding properties is obtained for finite K and C.

Background The optimisation and scale-up of process conditions leading to high yields of recombinant proteins is an enduring bottleneck in the post-genomic sciences. Typical experiments rely on varying selected parameters through repeated rounds of trial-and-error optimisation. To rationalise this, several groups have recently adopted the 'design of experiments' (DoE) approach frequently used in industry. Studies have focused on parameters such as medium composition, nutrient feed rates and induction of expression in shake flasks or bioreactors, as well as oxygen transfer rates in micro-well plates. In this study we wanted to generate a predictive model that described small-scale screens and to test its scalability to bioreactors. Results Here we demonstrate how the use of a DoE approach in a multi-well mini-bioreactor permitted the rapid establishment of high yielding production phase conditions that could be transferred to a 7 L bioreactor. Using green fluorescent protein secreted from Pichia pastoris, we derived a predictive model of protein yield as a function of the three most commonly-varied process parameters: temperature, pH and the percentage of dissolved oxygen in the culture medium. Importantly, when yield was normalised to culture volume and density, the model was scalable from mL to L working volumes. By increasing pre-induction biomass accumulation, model-predicted yields were further improved. Yield improvement was most significant, however, on varying the fed-batch induction regime to minimise methanol accumulation so that the productivity of the culture increased throughout the whole induction period. These findings suggest the importance of matching the rate of protein production with the host metabolism. Conclusion We demonstrate how a rational, stepwise approach to recombinant protein production screens can reduce process development time.

University to business technology transfer offers specific challenges, beyond those encountered in industry more widely. This paper examines the issues in university to business technology transfer in the UK and USA and presents the results of a survey of UK and US university technology transfer officers. Findings indicate significant differences in the motivations of universities in each country to transfer technology, the consistency of university technology transfer policies and the accessibility of university technologies to business. The study also looks at perceived barriers to university to business technology transfer and offers suggestions for possible improvements to the process. © 2006 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Simulation modelling has been used for many years in the manufacturing sector but has now become a mainstream tool in business situations. This is partly because of the popularity of business process re-engineering (BPR) and other process based improvement methods that use simulation to help analyse changes in process design. This textbook includes case studies in both manufacturing and service situations to demonstrate the usefulness of the approach. A further reason for the increasing popularity of the technique is the development of business orientated and user-friendly Windows-based software. This text provides a guide to the use of ARENA, SIMUL8 and WITNESS simulation software systems that are widely used in industry and available to students. Overall this text provides a practical guide to building and implementing the results from a simulation model. All the steps in a typical simulation study are covered including data collection, input data modelling and experimentation.
