The effect of C-12(6+) heavy ions bombardment on mutagenesis in Salvia splendens Ker-Gawl. was studied. Dose-response studies indicated that there was a peak of malformation frequency of S. splendens at 200 Gy. Abnormal leaf mutants of the bileaf, trileaf and tetraleaf conglutination were selected. Meanwhile, a bicolor flower chimera with dark red and fresh red flower was isolated in M1 generation of S. splendens. Random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) analysis demonstrated that DNA variations existed among the wild-type, fresh and dark red flower shoots of the chimera. The dark red flower shoots of the chimera were conserved and cultivated at a large-scale through micropropagation. MS supplemented with 2.0 mg/L BA and 0.3 mg/L NAA was the optimal medium in which the maximum proliferation ratio (5.2-fold) and rooting rate (88%) were achieved after 6 weeks. Our findings provide an important method to improve the ornamental quality of S. splendens.

Polypropylene (PP) microporous membranes were successfully prepared by swift heavy ion irradiation and track-etching. Polypropylene foils were irradiated with Au-197 ions of kinetic energy 11.4 MeV.u(-1) (total energy of 2245.8 MeV) and fluence 1x10(8) ions.cm(-2) at normal incidence. The damaged regions produced by the gold ions along the trajectories were etched in H2SO4 and K2Cr2O7 solutions leading to the formation of cylindrical pores in the membranes. The pore diameters of the PP microporous membranes increased from 380 to 1610 nm as the etching time increased from 5 to 30 min. The surface and cross-section morphologies of the porous membranes were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The micropores in the membranes were found to be cylindrical in shape, homogeneous in distribution, and equal in size. Some mathematical relations of the porosity of the PP microporous membranes were established by analytic derivation. The microporous membranes were used in lithium-ion batteries to measure their properties as separators. The electrical conductivity of the porous membrane immersed in liquid electrolyte was found to be comparable to that of commercial separators by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The results showed that the porosity and electrical conductivity were dependent on the ion fluence and etching time. By adjusting these two factors, microporous membranes with good porosity and electrical conductivity were made that met the requirements for commercial use.

Three molecularly imprinted monolithic columns with different length but almost identical column volume had been prepared. It was observed that the separation factors of diastereomers and enantiomers were almost unaffected by column length. However, the short column with dimension of 38 mm x 8 mm W. showed much lower resistance to flow rate so that it could be operated at much higher flow rates. By combining stepwise gradient elution with elevated flow rate, the diastereomers of cinchonine and cinchonidine and the enantiomers of Cbz-DL-Trp and Fmoc-DL-Trp were successfully separated within 3 min on the short column with dimension of 38 mm. x 8 mm i.d.. Based on the above results, a cinchonine imprinted monolithic disk with dimension of 10 mm x 16 mm W. was further developed. The SEM image and the pore size distribution profile showed that large flow-through pores are present on the prepared monolith, which allowed mobile phase to flow through the disk with very low resistance. Chromatographic performances on the monolithic disk were almost unchanged compared with the long columns. A rapid separation of cinchonine and cinchonidine was achieved in 2.5 min at the flow rate of 9.0 ml/min. Furthermore, it was observed that there was almost no effect of the flow rate on the dynamic binding capacity at high flow rates. In addition, the effect of the loading concentration of analytes on the dynamic binding capacity, namely adsorption isotherm, was also investigated. A non-linear adsorption isotherm of cinchonine was observed on the molecularly imprinted monolith with cinchonine as template, which might be a main reason to result in the peak tailing of template molecule. SmOx modified Rh(l 0 0) surfaces have been in-situ prepared by depositing metallic Sin and subsequently oxidizing under controlled conditions, and the interaction between the lanthanide oxide and transition metal has been characterized by means of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and high-resolution electron-energy-loss spectroscopy (HREELS) as well as thermal desorption spectroscopy (TDS). As evidenced, the adsorption of CO on the modified surfaces shows some different features to the original surface of Rh(l 00). The covering of SmOx blocks some sites on the surface and consequently suppresses adsorption of the typical CO species with an uptake at about 500 K, while a novel desorption peak centered at 260 K emerges in the CO TDS. Correspondingly, the XP spectrum exhibits a new C Is peak at 287.9 eV and 0 Is peak at 532.6 eV. The intensity of the low temperature peak varies with the coverage of SmOx, which shows an actual correlation to the perimeter sites of SmOx particles on the surface. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. Femtosecond time-resolved studies using fluorescence depletion spectroscopy were performed on Rhodamine 700 in acetone solution and on Oxazine 750 in acetone and formamide solutions at different temperatures. The experimental curves that include both fast and slow processes have been fitted using a biexponential function. Time constants of the fast process, which corresponds to the intramolecular vibrational redistribution (IVR) of solute molecules, range from 300 to 420 fs and increase linearly as the temperature of the environment decreases. The difference of the average vibrational energy of solute molecules in the ground state at different temperatures is a possible reason that induces this IVR time-constant temperature dependence. However, the time constants of the slow process, which corresponds to the energy transfer from vibrational hot solute molecules to the surroundings occurred on a time scale of 1-50 ps, changed dramatically at lower temperature, nonlinearly increasing with the decrease of temperature. Because of the C-H...O hydrogen-bond between acetone molecules, it is more reasonable that acetone molecules start to be associated, which can influence the energy transfer between dye molecules and acetone molecules efficiently, even at temperatures far over the freezing point.

Intra- and intermolecular relaxations of dye molecules are studied after the excitation to the high-lying excited states by a femtosecond laser pulse, using femtosecond time-resolved stimulated emission pumping fluorescence depletion spectroscopy (FS TR SEP FD). The biexponential decays indicate a rapid intramolecular vibrational redistribution (IVR) depopulation followed by a slower process, which was contributed by the energy transfer to the solvents and the solvation of the excited solutes. The time constants of IVR in both oxazine 750 and rhodamine 700 are at the 290-360 fs range, which are insensitive to the characters of solvents. The solvation of the excited solutes and the cooling of the hot solute molecules by collisional energy transfer to the surrounding takes place in the several picoseconds that strongly depend on the properties of solvents. The difference of Lewis basicity and states density of solvents is a possible reason to explain this solvent dependence. The more basic the solvent is, which means the more interaction between the solute and the neighboring solvent shell, the more rapid the intermolecular vibrational excess energy transfer from the solute to the surroundings and the solvation of the solutes are. The higher the states density of the solvent is, the more favorable the energy transfer between the solute and solvent molecules is.

Post-steam-treatment is a facile and effective method for improving the catalytic performances of Mo/HZSM-5 catalysts in methane dehydroaromatization under nonoxidative conditions. The treatment can enhance the stability of the catalyst and also give a higher methane conversion and a higher yield of light aromatics, as well as a decrease in the formation rate of carbonaceous deposits. (27)Al, (29)Si, and (1)H multinuclear magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis measurements as well as catalytic reaction evaluations were employed to conduct comparative studies on the properties of the catalysts before and after the post-steam-treatment. The results revealed that the number of free Bronsted acid sites per unit cell decreased, while more Mo species migrated into the HZSM-5 channels for the 6Mo/HZSM-5 catalysts after the post-steam-treatment. In addition, the average pore diameter was also larger for the post-steam-treated catalysts, and this was advantageous for mass transport of the reaction products. However, a severe post-steam-treatment, i.e., with longer treating time, of the 6Mo/HZSM-5 catalyst will lead to the formation of the Al(2)(MoO(4))(3) phases, which is detrimental to the reaction.

By using the home-made femtosecond laser system and the time-of-flight mass spectrometer, the decay dynamics of excited carbon disulfide (CS2) and ammonia (NH3) are investigated in real time by pump-probe multiphoton ionization detection. The estimated lifetime constant of the NH3 (A) over tilde (1)A(2)' state (51+/-4 fs) agreed quite well with the literature report. For the first time, the decay lifetime constants of the NH3 (E) over tilde'(1)A(1)' state (937+/-93 fs), the CS2 (a) over tilde (3)A(2) state (153+/-10 fs), and the CS2 Rydberg state [(3)/(2)]6ssigma(g) ((3)Pi(g)) (948+/-23 fs) are obtained.

The predissociation decay behavior of molecule carbonyl sulfide (OCS) has been investigated by resonance-enhanced multiphoton ionization spectroscopy using the pump-probe technique of dichroic femtosecond lasers in real time. The lifetime of excited OCS around 74 720 cm(-1) by two-photon absorption of 268 nm, corresponding to upsilon(1)=1 of the Rydberg state [(2)Pi(1/2)]4ppi((1)Sigma(+)), is directly determined to be tau(D)=1071+/-11 fs. This picosecond decay process indicates that the excited state is predissociative. The temporal information of dissociation enriches the knowledge of the potential-energy surface of the associative excited state.

The determination of glucose is possible with the enzymatic reaction of glucose oxidase and potentiometric detection. The signal is proportional to the concentration up to 50 mg/dl. This value is fixed by the concentration of oxygen in the sample. By adding catalase, concentrations up to 2000 mg/dl are detectable. The steepness of the calibration curve is not affected by oxygen concentrations greater than 4 mg/l. In contrast to amperometric sensors, an influence of deposits on the electrodes surface on the signal cannot be found with potentiometric sensors
