A Evolutec-Computer é uma empresa especializada em engenharia eletrônica, que recebeu um financiamento de uma firma internacional de acionistas, que decidiu entrar no mercado de produção de microcomputador. Por conseguinte, foi criada uma nova divisão de PC Marketing para prosseguir nesta oportunidade de negócio. A fim de iniciar essa divisão, a Cooporate Headquarters forneceu o capital inicial (dinheiro do investimento). O montante concedido seria usado para abrir escritórios de vendas, design das marcas e realizar atividades de pesquisas R&D para as novas tecnologias. A nossa empresa recebeu 500.000 USD nos primeiros quatro semestres e 5.000.000 USD no quinto semestre, somando um total de 7.000.000 USD. A Evolutec-Computer terá o controlo da divisão de PC para os próximos dois anos (8 semestres/períodos de decisão). Therefore, a new PC Marketing Division was created to pursue this business opportunity. In order to start this division, the Corporate Headquarters provided the initial capital (investment money). The sum would be used to open sales offices, design brands and carry out R & D research activities for new technologies. Our company received $ 500,000 in the first four semesters and $ 5,000,000 in the fifth semester, for a total of $ 7,000,000. The Evolutec-Computer will control the PC division for the next two years (eight semesters/decision periods). Within that period, the Coorporate Headquarters hopes to see the creation of a selfsufficient division. The team set up by Evolutec will have to be able to generate profit from operations and contribute to the profit of the corporation as a whole. Within 8 semesters, is expected to make enough profit to cover the initial investment. The performance of our company will be measured by Headquarter through the Balanced Scorecard, which will be based on financial performance, effectiveness of the marketing plan, market performance, investments in the company's future and wealth creation.

Two concentration methods for fast and routine determination of caffeine (using HPLC-UV detection) in surface, and wastewater are evaluated. Both methods are based on solid-phase extraction (SPE) concentration with octadecyl silica sorbents. A common “offline” SPE procedure shows that quantitative recovery of caffeine is obtained with 2 mL of an elution mixture solvent methanol-water containing at least 60% methanol. The method detection limit is 0.1 μg L−1 when percolating 1 L samples through the cartridge. The development of an “online” SPE method based on a mini-SPE column, containing 100 mg of the same sorbent, directly connected to the HPLC system allows the method detection limit to be decreased to 10 ng L−1 with a sample volume of 100 mL. The “offline” SPE method is applied to the analysis of caffeine in wastewater samples, whereas the “on-line” method is used for analysis in natural waters from streams receiving significant water intakes from local wastewater treatment plants

Introduction: Mean platelet volume (MPV) was shown to be significantly increased in patients with acute ischaemic stroke, especially in non-lacunar strokes. Moreover, some studies concluded that increased MPV is related to poor functional outcome after ischaemic stroke, although this association is still controversial. However, the determinants of MPV in patients with acute ischaemic stroke have never been investigated. Subjects and methods: We recorded the main demographic, clinical and laboratory data of consecutive patients with acute (admitted within 24 h after stroke onset) ischaemic stroke admitted in our Neurology Service between January 2003 and December 2008. MPV was generated at admission by the Sysmex XE-2100 automated cell counter (Sysmex Corporation, Kobe, Japan) from ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid blood samples stored at room temperature until measurement. The association of these parameters with MPV was investigated in univariate and multivariate analysis. Results: A total of 636 patients was included in our study. The median MPV was 10.4 ± 0.82 fL. In univariate analysis, glucose (β= 0.03, P= 0.05), serum creatinine (β= 0.002, P= 0.02), haemoglobin (β= 0.009, P < 0.001), platelet count (β=-0.002, P < 0.001) and history of arterial hypertension (β= 0.21, P= 0.005) were found to be significantly associated with MPV. In multivariate robust regression analysis, only hypertension and platelet count remained as independent determinants of MPV. Conclusions: In patients with acute ischaemic stroke, platelet count and history of hypertension are the only determinants of MPV.

The public library movement f the early twentieth century was a national phenomenon, in which Iowa, along with its neighboring states, played a prominent role. In 1900, the Iowa Library Commission noted 48 free public libraries in the state. Today there are approximately 500, in towns ranging in size from Beaman, with a population of 222, the Des Moines, the state capitol. Iowans took enthusiastic advantage of Andre Carnegie's library philanthropy. In 1919, the Carnegie Corporation stopped funding libraries, 101 building has been erected in Iowa with Carnegie funds. Iowa place fourth among the states in terms of the number of communities obtaining Carnegie buildings, fifth in dollar appropriation per one hundred population and eighth in the total amount of money given by Carnegie to a state. These figures provide some measure by which interest in popular education among Iowans of the period can be judged. Today these early libraries, often the most distinctive public libraries in small or medium-sized towns, are physical foci in the townscapes of their communities and centers for a variety of educational and social activities. This survey was initiated by the Division of Historic Preservation in 1977. It grew out of the need to provide a framework within which libraries could be evaluated for National Register action. Several libraries (Des Moines, Grinnell, Eagle Grove, Carroll) has been recent candidates for the Register. There was every indication that enthusiasm for old library buildings was increasing and that more nominations could be expected in the future. The attrition rate among early library buildings was (and is) growing. Most libraries were built on limited budgets (Carnegie did not squander his money) and, despite the fact that future expansion was usually a conscious consideration in their design, they are rapidly becoming obsolete, due to expanding collections and changing styles of librarianship. If the protection of the threatened with demolition or alteration, action needed to be taken.

Pedotransfer functions (PTF) were developed to estimate the parameters (α, n, θr and θs) of the van Genuchten model (1980) to describe soil water retention curves. The data came from various sources, mainly from studies conducted by universities in Northeast Brazil, by the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (Embrapa) and by a corporation for the development of the São Francisco and Parnaíba river basins (Codevasf), totaling 786 retention curves, which were divided into two data sets: 85 % for the development of PTFs, and 15 % for testing and validation, considered independent data. Aside from the development of general PTFs for all soils together, specific PTFs were developed for the soil classes Ultisols, Oxisols, Entisols, and Alfisols by multiple regression techniques, using a stepwise procedure (forward and backward) to select the best predictors. Two types of PTFs were developed: the first included all predictors (soil density, proportions of sand, silt, clay, and organic matter), and the second only the proportions of sand, silt and clay. The evaluation of adequacy of the PTFs was based on the correlation coefficient (R) and Willmott index (d). To evaluate the PTF for the moisture content at specific pressure heads, we used the root mean square error (RMSE). The PTF-predicted retention curve is relatively poor, except for the residual water content. The inclusion of organic matter as a PTF predictor improved the prediction of parameter a of van Genuchten. The performance of soil-class-specific PTFs was not better than of the general PTF. Except for the water content of saturated soil estimated by particle size distribution, the tested models for water content prediction at specific pressure heads proved satisfactory. Predictions of water content at pressure heads more negative than -0.6 m, using a PTF considering particle size distribution, are only slightly lower than those obtained by PTFs including bulk density and organic matter content.

In a worldwide collaborative effort, 19,630 Y-chromosomes were sampled from 129 different populations in 51 countries. These chromosomes were typed for 23 short-tandem repeat (STR) loci (DYS19, DYS389I, DYS389II, DYS390, DYS391, DYS392, DYS393, DYS385ab, DYS437, DYS438, DYS439, DYS448, DYS456, DYS458, DYS635, GATAH4, DYS481, DYS533, DYS549, DYS570, DYS576, and DYS643) and using the PowerPlex Y23 System (PPY23, Promega Corporation, Madison, WI). Locus-specific allelic spectra of these markers were determined and a consistently high level of allelic diversity was observed. A considerable number of null, duplicate and off-ladder alleles were revealed. Standard single-locus and haplotype-based parameters were calculated and compared between subsets of Y-STR markers established for forensic casework. The PPY23 marker set provides substantially stronger discriminatory power than other available kits but at the same time reveals the same general patterns of population structure as other marker sets. A strong correlation was observed between the number of Y-STRs included in a marker set and some of the forensic parameters under study. Interestingly a weak but consistent trend toward smaller genetic distances resulting from larger numbers of markers became apparent.

With the spiraling cost of construction, coupled with inflation, engineers must develop and research new techniques to better utilize the public's dollar. One area i n which these new technologies must be researched is in the field of highway construction; more specifically, asphalt products. There are areas within the state of Iowa which do not have Class I aggregate readily available for asphalt concrete road construction. The cost of transporting higher quality aggregate specified in the "Standard Specifications for Highway and Bridge construction"' for construction projects is escalating on a yearly basis. Many counties will be squeezed out of the construction of new roadways if an alternative to the high costs is not identified. The same high costs will curtail adequate upkeep on the existing paved system and will result in decreased serviceability. For this reason, a product is needed to better utilize the local aggregates for road construction and maintenance. There i s a product on the market which the promoters claim will improve the prer?nt asphalt to such a degree as to "upgrade deficient aggregates" to the level they can be used in today's standard construction techniques. This product is "Chem-Crete Bitumen," a'kpecially refined asphalt" that was promoted by Chem-Crete Corporation of Menlo Park, California. Chemkrete Technologies, Inc. of Wickliffe, Ohio; a wholly owned subsidiary of the Lubrizol Corporation has since purchased the U.S.

Background : Canakinumab, a fully human anti-IL-1b antibody has been shown to control inflammation in gouty arthritis. This study evaluated changes in health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in patients treated with canakinumab or triamcinolone acetonide (TA).Methods : An 8-wk, dose-ranging, active controlled, single-blind study in patients (_18 to _80 years) with acute gouty arthritis flare, refractory to or contraindicated to NSAlDs and/or colchicine, were randomized to canakinumab 10, 25, 50, 90, 150mg sc or TA 40mg im. HRQoL was assessed using patient reported outcomes evaluating PCS and MCS, and subscale scores of SF-36_ [acute version 2]) and functional disability (HAQ-DI_).Results : In canakinumab 150mg group, the most severe impairment at baseline was reported for physical functioning and bodily pain; levels of 41.5 and 36.0, respectively, which improved in 7 days to 80.0 and 72.2 (mean increases of 39.0 and 35.6) and at 8 wks improved to 86.1 and 86.6 (mean increases of 44.6 and 50.6); these were higher than levels seen in the general US population. TA group, showed less improvement in 7 days (mean increases of 23.3 and 21.3 for physical function and bodily pain). Functional disability scores, measured by the HAQ-DI_ decreased in both treatment groups (Table 1).Conclusions : Gouty arthritis patients treated with canakinumab showed a rapid improvement in physical and mental well-being based on SF-36_ scores. Five Seasons Transportation & Parking (FSTP) and the Johnson County Council of Governments (JCCOG) are interested in evaluating the feasibility of prospective passenger rail service(s) that would operate over existing trackage of the Cedar Rapids and Iowa City Railway Company (CRANDIC), seen below left, and/or the Iowa Interstate Railroad System (IAIS), seen below right, connecting Cedar Rapids, Iowa City and the Amana Colonies. To perform the study, FSTP and JCCOG selected R.L. Banks & Associates, Inc. (RLBA) as Prime Contractors, HNTB Corporation (HNTB) and Snyder & Associates, Inc. (Snyder) as Subcontractors, hereafter Consultant Team. Both railroads participated in the study and contributed time and resources, as did many local government and civic organizations. The purpose of the study is to determine whether it is feasible to establish regularly scheduled passenger rail service and/or special event excursion rail service, in conjunction with the Five Seasons Transit system, Iowa City Transit, East Central Iowa Transit, Coralville Transit and the University of Iowa CAMBUS.

Background : Monosodium urate (MSU) crystals stimulate the productionof interleukin-1b (IL-1b), a potent inflammatory cytokine. Targeted IL-1b blockade with canakinumab, a fully human monoclonal anti-IL-1b antibody, is a novel treatment for gouty arthritis. Its effects on pain and inflammation in acute gouty arthritis flares were compared with triamcinolone acetonide (TA). TA has been shown to be effective in the treatment of acute gouty arthritis flares.Methods : This was an 8-week, dose-ranging, multicenter, blinded, active-controlled trial. Patients _18 to _80 years with an acute gouty arthritis flare, refractory to or contraindicated to NSAIDs and/or colchicine were randomized to one subcutaneous dose of canakinumab (10, 25, 50, 90, or 150 mg; n¼143) or one intramuscular dose of TA (40 mg; n¼57). Primary outcome was pain intensity at 72 hours post dose on VAS scale (0-100 mm). Secondary outcomes included Creactive protein (CRP), serum amyloid A (SAA), and physician's assessment of tenderness, swelling and erythema of target joint at 72 hours, 7 days, 4 and 8-weeks post dose.Results : 191/200 patients completed the study. Canakinumab showed a statistically significant dose response at 72 hours. The 150mg dose group reached superior pain relief compared to TA group starting from 24 hours as previously reported. At 72 hours post dose, 78% of canakinumab 150mg treated patients achieved _75% and 96% achieved _50% reduction in pain from baseline. In contrast, 45% and 61% of patients treated with TA achieved _75% and _50% pain reduction, respectively. Median CRP/SAA levels were normalized by Day 7 for all canakinumab doses above 10mg and remained below the upper limit of normal [(ULN): CRP 3.0 mg/L; SAA 6.7 mg/L)] for rest of the study. In TA group, median CRP levels remained above the ULN throughout the study while median SAA levels decreased below ULN only 28 days after first dose. At 72 hours post dose, canakinumab 150mg group was 3.2 (95% CI, 1.27-7.89) times more likely to have less joint tenderness and 2.7 (95% CI, 1.09-6.5) times more likely to have less joint swelling than TA group (p<0.05). At 72 hours post dose, erythema disappeared in 74.1% of patients receiving canakinumab150mg and 69.6% of patients receiving TA. At 7 days post dose, erythema was absent in 96.3% of canakinumab 150mg treated patients vs. 83.9% of patients receiving TA. The overall incidence of AEs was similar for canakinumab (41%) and triamcinolone acetonide (42%). Serious AEs (canakinumab treatment groups n¼4, TA n¼1) were not considered treatment-related by investigators. No discontinuationsdue to AEs occurred.Conclusions : Canakinumab 150mg provided superior pain relief compared to TA for acute flares in difficult-to-treat gouty arthritis patients. Recent construction of new generation power plants burning western coal within Iowa has resulted in fly Ash production on the order of 760,000 tons annually. Although fly ash has long been accepted as a valuable replacement for portland cement in concrete, most experience has been with fly ash generated from eastern bituminous coals. A few years ago, fly ash in Iowa was not a significant factor because production was small and economics dictated disposal as the better alternative than construction use. Today, the economic climate, coupled with abundance of the material, makes constructive use in concrete feasible. The problem is, however, fly ash produced from new power plants is different than that for which information was available. It seems fly ash types have outgrown existing standards. The objective of this study was to develop fundamental information about fly ashes available to construction in Iowa such that its advantages and limitations as replacement to portland cement can be defined. Evaluative techniques used in this work involve sophisticated laboratory equipment, not readily available to potential fly ash users, so a second goal was preliminary development of rapid diagnostic tests founded on fundamental information. Lastly, Iowa Department of Transportation research indicated an interesting interdependency among coarse aggregate type, fly ash and concrete's resistance to freeze-thaw action. Thus a third charge of this research project was to verify and determine the cause for the phenomena. One objective of this project was to determine properties of Iowa fly ashes and evaluate their relevance to use of the material as an admixture of PCC. This phase of the research involved two approaches. The first involved the development of a rapid method for determining quantitative elemental composition while the second was aimed at both qualitative and quantitative determination of compounds. X-ray fluorescence techniques were adapted for rapid determination of elemental composition of fly ash. The analysis was performed using a Siemens SR-200 sequential x-ray spectrometer controlled by a PDP-11-03 microcomputer. The spectrometer was equipped with a ten sample specimen chamber and four interchangeable analyzing crystals. Unfiltered excitation radiation was generated using a chromium tube at 50 KV and 48 ma. Programs for the spectrometer were developed by the Siemens Corporation.

It is difficult to maintain reflectorized lane markings on high-traffic, multi-lane highways. This is particularly true of sections in urban areas where there are frequent lane changes, such as on the Des Moines Freeway, I-235. In spite of the fact that the lane markings are painted on an average of three times a year, they are frequently absent during a considerable portion of the winter period. In the summer of 1973, the office of Highway Maintenance suggested a research project using a new thermoplastic paint developed by the Prismo Universal Corporation. Because of difficulties in scheduling the work, a definite proposal was not submitted until 1974. Upon the recommendation of the Iowa Highway Research Board, the project was approved by the Iowa State Highway Commission on August 7, 1974.

An asphalt concrete (ACC) overlay is most often the rehabilitative effort used to maintain the serviceability of either an ACC or PCC pavement. The major problem in durability of this ACC overlay comes from reflective cracking. These cracks usually open, allowing water to enter the unsealed crack and strip the ACC in the overlay. The stripping of the ACC allows accelerated deterioration at the crack. Two engineering fabrics were evaluated in this project in order to determine their effectiveness in reducing reflective cracking. These two materials are: PavePrep, Contech Construction Products, Inc., and Pro-Guard, Phillips Fiber Corporation. A 4.2 km (2.6 mi) roadway in Audubon County was selected for the research project. The roadway was divided into eight test sections. Four of the test sections are conventional resurfacing. The other four sections are split between the two engineering fabrics (two Pro-Guard and two PavePrep). A 75 mm (3 in.) thick overlay was placed over the entire project.

In Iowa it is normal procedure to either use partial or full-depth patching to repair deteriorated areas of pavement prior to resurfacing. The Owens/Corning Corporation introduced a repair system to replace the patching process. Their Roadglas repair system was used in this research project on US 30 in Story County. It was installed in 1985 and has been observed annually since that time. There were some construction problems with slippage as the roller crossed the abundant Roadglas binder. It appears the Roadglas system has helped to control reflective cracking in the research areas. Since the time when this project was completed it has been reported that Owens/Corning has discontinued production of the Roadglas system.
