During the third part of the Atlantic Expedition 1969 from 10° S to 60° N along 30° W, measurements of the complete size distribution of atmospheric aeosols over the whole size range from about 10**-7 to 10**-2 cm radius were made. This was possibe by the simultaneous operation of different methods which are critically discussed. The results obtained are the first of its kind and are of general interest despite some methodical shortcomings. North of the equator the ship passed through air masses of west African origin and the influence of Sahara dust on the Marine aerosols could be documented in a unique way. The Sahara dust component was restricted to the size range of 10**-5 to 10**-3 radius. Throughout the voyage particles up to 10**-2 radius were always found to be present, similar to findings over continents. Of special interest is the observation that the size distribution extends to very small particles, suggesting continuous aerosol production over the ocean.

We studied the stable isotopic and carbonate stratigraphy of ODP Hole 704A to reconstruct the paleoceanographic evolution of the eastern subantarctic sector of the South Atlantic Ocean. Site 704 is well positioned with respect to latitude (46°52.8'S, 7°25.3'E) and bathymetry (2532 m) to monitor past migrations in the position of Polar Front Zone (PFZ) and changes in deep-water circulation during the late Pliocene-Pleistocene. Several important changes occurred in proxy paleoceanographic indicators across the Gauss/Matuyama boundary at 2.47 Ma: (1) accumulation rates of biogenic sedimentary components increased by an order of magnitude (Froelich et al., this volume); (2) planktonic d1 8O values increased by an average of 0.5 per mil; (3) the amplitude of the benthic d18O signal increased; (4) the accumulation rate of ice-rafted detritus increased several fold (Warnke and Allen, this volume); and (5) carbon isotopic ratios of benthic foraminifers decreased by 0.5 per mil, as did the d13C of the fine-fraction carbonate by 1.5 per mil (Mead et al., 1991, doi:10.2973/odp.proc.sr.114.152.1991), but no change occurred in planktonic foraminiferal d13C values. Most of these changes are consistent with more frequent expansions and contractions of the PFZ over Site 704 after 2.47 Ma, bringing cold, nutrient-rich waters to 47°S that stimulated both carbonate and siliceous productivity. The synchronous increase in d18O values and ice-rafted detritus accumulation in Hole 704A indicates that the 2.4 Ma paleoceanographic event included ice volume growth on both Antarctica and Northern Hemisphere continents. The decrease in benthic d13C values indicates that the ventilation rate of Southern Ocean deep water decreased and the nutrient content increased during glacial events after 2.5 Ma. At the Gauss/Matuyama boundary, benthic d13C values of the Southern Ocean shifted toward those of the Pacific end member, indicating a decrease in the relative mixing ratio of Northern Component Water and Circumpolar Deep Water. During the early Matuyama (~2.3 to 1.7 Ma), the PFZ generally occupied a southerly position with respect to Site 704 and carbonate productivity prevailed. Exceptions to these general conditions occurred during strong glacial events of the early Matuyama (e.g., isotopic stages 82, 78, 74, and 70), when the PFZ migrated to the north and opal sedimentation predominated at Site 704. At 1.7 Ma, the PFZ migrated toward the equator and occupied a more northerly position for a prolonged interval between ~1.7 and 1.5 Ma. Beginning at ~1.5-1.4 Ma, surface and bottom water parameters (d18O, d13C, %CaCO3, and %opal) in the subantarctic South Atlantic became highly correlated such that glacial events (d18O maxima) corresponded to d13C and carbonate minima and opal maxima. This pattern is typical of the correlation found during the latest Pleistocene in the Southern Ocean (Charles and Fairbanks, in press). This event coincided with increased suppression of Northern Component Water during glacial events after 1.5 Ma (Raymo et al., 1990, doi:10.1016/0012-821X(90)90051-X), which may have influenced the climatology of the Southern Hemisphere by altering the flux of heat and salt to the Southern Ocean).

Planktonic foraminiferal and nannoplankton stratigraphy of the Pliocene-Quatemary Sediments of the northern half of the Atlantic Ocean from the equator up to the Rockall Plateau and the Norwegian Sea, is considered. Lowlatitude zonations were used for the subdivision of the Pliocene and Quaternary Sediments of different climatic belts, and certain subglobal zonal units were recognized. Variations in the degree of resolution of the zonation in different latitudes were revealed; the resolution of zonal scales based on calcareous plankton diminishes northwards. Changes of taxonomic composition of the zonal foraminifer and nannoplankton assemblages within various latitudinal belts of the Atlantic were analyzed taking into consideration the influence of climatic factors and of local bionomic conditions. Correlation with the magnetostratigraphic time-scale permitted the establishment of the most reliable appearance and disappearance datums (datum planes) of planktonic foraminifer and nannoplankton species. Paleontologic plates demonstrate some guide forms of two groups of calcareous plankton, and a short description of the taxa is given in the text. Major stratigraphic problems of Pliocene and Quaternary marine deposits are discussed. The monograph can be used in different geological investigations by specialists in geology, paleontology, and oceanology.

During a four weeks anchoring station of R.V. ,,Meteor" on the equator at 30° W longitude, vertical profiles of wind, temperature, and humidity were measured by means of a meteorological buoy carrying a mast of 10 m height. After eliminating periods of instrumental failure, 18 days are available for the investigation of the diurnal variations of the meteorological parameters and 9 days for the investigation of the vertical heat fluxes. The diurnal variations of the above mentioned quantities are caused essentially by two periodic processes: the 24-hourly changing solar energy supply and the 12-hourly oscillation of air pressure, which both originate in the daily rotation of the earth. While the temperature of the water and of the near water layers of the air show a 24 hours period in their diurnal course, the wind speed, as a consequence of the pressure wave, has a 12 hours period, which is also observable in evaporation and, consequently, in the water vapor content of the surface layer. Concerning the temperature, a weak dependence of the daily amplitude on height was determined. Further investigation of the profiles yields relations between the vertical gradients of wind, temperature, and water vapor and the wind speed, the difference between sea and air of temperature and water vapor, respectively, thus giving a contribution to the problem of parameterizing the vertical fluxes. Mean profile coefficients for the encountered stabilities, which were slightly unstable, are presented, and correction terms are given due to the fact that the conditions at the very surface are not sufficiently represented by measuring in a water depth of 20 cm and assuming water vapor saturation. This is especially true for the water vapor content, where the relation between the gradient and the air-sea difference suggests a reduction of relative humidity to appr. 96% at the very surface, if the gradients are high. This effect may result in an overestimation of the water vapor flux, if a ,,bulk"-formula is used. Finally sensible and latent heat fluxes are computed by means of a gradient-formula. The influence of stability on the transfer process is taken into account. As the air-sea temperature differences are small, sensible heat plays no important role in that region, but latent heat shows several interesting features. Within the measuring period of 18 days, a regular variation by a factor of ten is observed. Unperiodic short term variations are superposed by periodic diurnal variations. The mean diurnal course shows a 12-hours period caused by the vertical wind speed gradient superposed by a 24-hours period due to the changing stabilities. Mean values within the measuring period are 276 ly/day for latent heat and 9.41y/day for sensible heat.

Upwelling velocities w in the equatorial band are too small to be directly observed. Here, we apply a recently proposed indirect method, using the observed helium isotope (3He or 4He) disequilibria in the mixed layer. The helium data were sampled from three cruises in the eastern tropical Atlantic in September 2005 and June/July 2006. A one-dimensional two-box model was applied, where the helium air-sea gas exchange is balanced by upwelling from 3He-rich water below the mixed layer and by vertical mixing. The mixing coefficients Kv were estimated from microstructure measurements, and on two of the cruises, Kv exceeded 1 x 10**-4 m**2/s, making the vertical mixing term of the same order of magnitude as the gas exchange and the upwelling term. In total, helium disequilibrium was observed on 54 stations. Of the calculated upwelling velocities, 48% were smaller than 1.0 x 10**-5 m/s, 19% were between 1.0 and 2.0 x 10**-5 m/s, 22% were between 2.0 and 4.0 x 10**-5 m/s, and on 11% of upwelling velocities exceeded this limit. The highest upwelling velocities were found in late June 2006. Meridional upwelling distribution indicated an equatorial asymmetry with higher vertical velocities between the equator and 1° to 2° south compared to north of the equator, particularly at 10°W. Associated heat flux into the mixed layer could be as high as 138 W/m**2, but this depends strongly on the chosen depths where the upwelled water comes from. By combining upwelling velocities with sea surface temperature and productivity distributions, a mean monthly equatorial upwelling rate of 19 Sv was estimated for June 2006 and a biweekly mean of 24 Sv was estimated for September 2005.

Palynological data from offshore Costa Rica, allow us to investigate the relationship between dinoflagellate cyst assemblages and changes in regional oceanic primary productivity. From Miocene to Pleistocene, productivity at ODP Site 1039 was influenced by tectonic drift, as Site 1039 approached the continent, from the Equator to its current position at ~10°N. In addition, dinoflagellate abundance is modulated by regional productivity events, which modified primary productivity, as also indicated by available data on calcareous nannofossils, diatoms, TOC, and CaCO3 content. Five palynomorph intervals are defined. The early-late Miocene one, dominated by Batiacasphaera, represents relatively stable, productive oceanic conditions before the closure of the Indonesian and Panama Seaways. The late Miocene decrease in palynomorph recovery is related to the Carbonate Crash Event. The high abundance and diversity of the assemblages at the end of the late Miocene to early Pliocene indicate increased productivity related to the Global Biogenic Bloom, and a change in dominance from Batiacasphaera to Impagidinium to Nematosphaeropsis. The low abundance of the late Pliocene interval is related to El Niño-like conditions, and there is another change related to the disappearance of Batiacasphaera and dominance of Impagidinium, Nematosphaeropsis, and Operculodinium. The abundant Pleistocene assemblages represent increased marine productivity, and a high influx of continental palynomorphs and bissacate pollen, associated with the proximity of the Costa Rica Dome. Pleistocene dinoflagellates are characterized by Spiniferites and Selenopemphix, together with rare Impagidinium and Nematosphaeropsis.

Over 100 samples of recent surface sediments from the bottomn of the Atlantic Ocean offshore NW Africa between 34° and 6° N have been analysed palynologically. The objective of this study was to reveal the relation between source areas, transport systems, and resulting distribution patterns of pollen and spores in marine sediments off NW Africa, in order to lay a sound foundation for the interpretation of pollen records of marine cores from this area. The clear zonation of the NW-African vegetation (due to the distinct climatic gradient) is helpful in determining main source areas, and the presence of some major wind belts facilitates the registration of the average course of wind trajectories. The present circulation pattern is driven by the intertropical front (ITCZ) which shifts over the continent between c. 22° N (summer position) and c. 4° N (winter position) in the course of the year. Determination of the period of main pollen release and the average atmospheric circulation pattern effective at that time of the years is of prime importance. The distribution patterns in recent marine sediments of pollen of a series of genera and families appear to record climatological/ecological variables, such as the trajectory of the NE trade, January trades, African Easterly Jet (Saharan Air Layer), the northernmost and southernmost position of the intertropical convergence zone, and the extent and latitudinal situation of the NW-African vegetation belt. Pollen analysis of a series of dated deep-sea cores taken between c. 35° and the equator off NW African enable the construction of paleo-distribution maps for time slices of the past, forming a register of paleoclimatological/paleoecological information.

Silicon isotopes are a powerful tool to investigate the cycling of dissolved silicon (Si). In this study the distribution of the Si isotope composition of dissolved silicic acid (d30Si(OH)4) was analyzed in the water column of the Eastern Equatorial Pacific (EEP) where one of the globally largest Oxygen Minimum Zones (OMZs) is located. Samples were collected at 7 stations along two meridional transects from the equator to 14°S at 85°50'W and 82°00'W off the Ecuadorian and Peruvian coast. Surface waters show a large range in isotope compositions d30Si(OH)4 (+2.2 per mil to +4.4 per mil) with the highest values found at the southernmost station at 14°S. This station also revealed the most depleted silicic acid concentrations (0.2 µmol/kg), which is a function of the high degree of Si utilization by diatoms and admixture with waters from highly productive areas. Samples within the upper water column and the OMZ at oxygen concentrations below 10 µmol/kg are characterized by a large range in d30Si(OH)4, which mainly reflects advection and mixing of different water masses, even though the highly dynamic hydrographic system of the upwelling area off Peru does not allow the identification of clear Si isotope signals for distinct water masses. Therefore we cannot rule out that also dissolution processes have an influence on the d30Si(OH)4 signature in the subsurface water column. Deep water masses (>2000 m) in the study area show a mean d30Si(OH)4 of +1.2±0.2 per mil, which is in agreement with previous studies from the eastern and central Pacific. Comparison of the new deep water data of this study and previously published data from the central Pacific and Southern Ocean reveal substantially higher d30Si(OH)4 values than deep water signatures from the North Pacific. As there is no clear correlation between d30Si(OH)4 and silicic acid concentrations in the entire data set the distribution of d30Si(OH)4 signatures in deep waters of the Pacific is considered to be mainly a consequence of the mixing of several end member water masses with distinct Si isotope signatures including Lower Circumpolar Deep Water (LCDW) and North Pacific Deep Water (NPDW).

This study addresses changes in the absolute magnitude and spatial geometry of particle flux and export production in a meridional transect across the central equatorial Pacific Ocean's upwelling system during oxygen isotope Stage 11 and Stage 12 and compares these time periods to the current Holocene interglacial system. Temporal and spatial variability in several chemical proxies of export production, and in particular the distributions of Ba, scavenged Al, and P, are studied in a suite of sediment cores gathered along a cross-equator transect at 5°S, 2°S, 0°, 2°N, and 4°N. Because this latitudinal range preserves strong gradients in biogenic particle flux in the modern equatorial Pacific Ocean, we are able to assess variations in the relative magnitude of export production as well as the meridional width of the equatorial system through the late Quaternary glacial/interglacial cycles. During interglacial oxygen isotope Stage 11 the chemical proxies each indicate lower particle flux and export production than during Stage 12. These records are consistent throughout the transect during this time period, but geographic narrowing (during the interglacial) and widening (during the glacial) of the meridional gradient also occurs. Although carbonate concentration varies dramatically through glacial/interglacial cycles at all latitudes studied, the productivity proxies record only minimal glacial/interglacial change at 5°S and 4°N, indicating that the carbonate minima at these latitudes is controlled dominantly by dissolution rather than production. The chemical data indicate that although the spatial geometry of the system during Stages 11 and 12 indicates maximum productivity at the equator during both glacial and interglacial conditions, the absolute magnitude of export production integrated from 5°S to 4°N during Stage 11 was 25-50% less than during Stage 12, and also was 25-50% less than it is now.
