Rotational spectra of C(6)H(5)CCH center dot center dot center dot H(2)S, C(6)H(5)CCH center dot center dot center dot H(2)(34)S, C(6)H(5)CCH center dot center dot center dot HDS, C(6)H(5)CCH center dot center dot center dot D(2)S and C(6) H(5)CCD center dot center dot center dot H(2)S complexes have been observed using a pulsed nozzle Fourier transform microwave spectrometer. The observed spectrum is consistent with a structure in which hydrogen sulfide is located over the phenyl ring pi cloud and the distance between the centers of masses of the two monomers is 3.74 +/- 0.01 angstrom. In the complex, the H(2)S unit is shifted from the phenyl ring center towards the acetylene group. The vibrationally averaged structure has an effective Cs symmetry. Ab initio calculations were performed at MP2/aug-cc-pVDZ level of theory to locate the possible geometries of the complex. The calculations reveal the experimentally observed structure to be more stable than a coplanar arrangement of the monomers, which was observed for the C(6)H(5)CCH center dot center dot center dot H(2)O complex. Atoms in molecule theoretical analysis shows the presence of S-H center dot center dot center dot pi hydrogen bond. For the parent isotopologue, each transition frequency was found to split into two resulting from an interchange of the equivalent hydrogens of H(2)S unit in the complex. (C) 2011 Elsevier Inc. Functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are coated with a 4-5 nm thin layer of V(2)O(5) by controlled hydrolysis of vanadium alkoxide. The resulting V(2)O(5)/CNT composite has been investigated for electrochemical activity with lithium ion, and the capacity value shows both faradaic and capacitive (nonfaradaic) contributions. At high rate (1 C), the capacitive behavior dominates the intercalation as 2/3 of the overall capacity value out of 2700 C/g is capacitive, while the remaining is due to Li-ion intercalation. These numbers are in agreement with the Trasatti plots and are corroborated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) studies on the V(2)O(5)/CNTs electrode, which show 85% of vanadium in the +4 oxidation state after the discharge at 1 C rate. The cumulative high-capacity value is attributed to the unique property of the nano V(2)O(5)/CNTs composite, which provides a short diffusion path for Lit-ions and an easy access to vanadium redox centers besides the high conductivity of CNTs. The composite architecture exhibits both high power density and high energy density, stressing the benefits of using carbon substrates to design high performance supercapacitor electrodes.

Nanocrystalline ZnO powders have been synthesized by a low temperature solution combustion method. The photoluminescence (PL) spectrum of as-formed and heat treated ZnO shows strong violet (402, 421, 437, 485 nm) and weak green (520 nm) emission peaks respectively. The PL intensities of defect related emission bands decrease with calcinations temperature indicating the decrease of Zn(i) and V(o)(+) caused by the chemisorptions of oxygen. The results are correlated with the electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) studies. Thermoluminescence (TL) glow curves of gamma irradiated ZnO nanoparticles exhibit a single broad glow peak at similar to 343 degrees C. This can be attributed to the recombination of charge carriers released from the surface states associated with oxygen defects, mainly interstitial oxygen ion centers. The trapping parameters of ZnO irradiated with various gamma-doses are calculated using peak shape method. It is observed that the glow peak intensity increases with increase of gamma dose without changing glow curve shape. These two characteristic properties such as TL intensity increases with gamma dose and simple glow curve structure is an indication that the synthesized ZnO nanoparticles might be used as good TL dosimeter for high temperature application. Two copper-containing compounds [Cu(3)(mu(3)-OH)(2)-(H(2)O)(2){(SO(3))-C(6)H(3)-(COO)(2)}(CH(3)COO)] , I, and [Cu(5)(mu(3)-OH)(2)(H(2)O)(6){(NO(2))-C(6)H(3)-(COO)(2)}(4)]center dot 5H(2)O, II, were prepared using sulphoisophthalic and nitroisophthalic acids. The removal of the coordinated water molecules in the compounds was investigated using in situ single crystal to single crystal (SCSC) transformation studies, temperature-dependent powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The efficacy of SCSC transformation studies were established by the observation of dimensionality cross-over from a two-dimensional (I) to a three-dimensional structure, Cu(6)(mu(3)-OH)(4){(SO(3))-C(6)H(3)-(COO)(2)}(2)(CH(3)COO)(2), Ia, during the removal of the coordinated water molecules. Compound H exhibited a structural reorganization forming Cu(5)(mu(2)-OH)(2){(NO(2))C(6)H(3)-(COO)(2))(4)], Ha, possessing trimeric (Cu(3)O(12)) and dimeric (Cu(2)O(8)) copper clusters. The PXRD studies indicate that the three-dimensional structure (Ia) is transient and unstable, reverting back to the more stable two-dimensional structure (I) on cooling to room temperature. Compound Ha appears to be more stable at room temperature. The rehydration/dehydration studies using a modified TGA setup suggest complete rehydration of the water molecules, indicating that the water molecules in both compounds are labile. A possible model for the observed changes in the structures has been proposed. Magnetic studies indicate changes in the exchanges between the copper centers in Ha, whereas no such behavior was observed in Ia.

In last 30 years innovative research in the area of auto exhaust catalysis is being developed and CeO2 has been found to play a major role in this area due to its unique redox properties. In this review, auto exhaust emission and its impact on earth’s environment, global concern and recent advances in science and technology in automotive exhaust catalysis have been documented. A new preparative method of dispersing metal ions by solution combustion technique over CeO2 and TiO2 resulting mainly Ce1−xMxO2−δ, Ti1−xMxO2−δ and Ce1−x−yTixMyO2−δ (M = Pd, Rh and Pt) catalysts, structure of these materials, their catalytic properties towards auto exhaust catalysis, structure–property relation and mechanism of catalytic reactions are accounted here. In these materials, metal ions are incorporated into substrate matrix to a certain limit in the solid solution form and we have established a new direction in heterogeneous catalysis by turning to the concept of dispersed metal ions as catalytically active sites from the conventionally nurtured idea of metal particles as active centers for catalysis.

We have synthesized 5-7 nm size, highly crystalline TiO2 which absorbs radiation in the visible region of solar spectrum. The material shows higher photocatalytic activity both in UV and visible region of the solar radiation compared to commercial Degussa P25 TiO2. Transition metal ion substitution for Ti4+ creates mid-gap, states which act as recombination centers for electron-hole induced by photons thus reducing photocatalytic activity. However, Pt, Pd and Cu ion substituted TiO2 are excellent CO oxidation and NO reduction catalysts at temperatures less than 100 degrees C.

The magnitude and volume of transportation of petroleum products (both crude and finished products) has necessitated constructing dedicated pipelines from the refineries to the various consumer centers. The present status and scenario of pipeline transportation has been briefly described. Published literatures covering geotechnical engineering aspects, especially corrosion studies for pipelines are scanty. Available literature has been summarized. Main topic includes soil resistivity survey, classification based on resistivity and various parameters of chemical analysis. Detailed analysis has been carried out from the data generated through field investigation and laboratory tests on soil samples obtained from different locations along the two selected pipeline route where they are to be constructed. Typical data has been analysed for aggressivity. Summary of aggressivity analysis has been presented for the two field cases and modification has been suggested for existing practice.

Some experimental results on the recognition of three-dimensional wire-frame objects are presented. In order to overcome the limitations of a recent model, which employs radial basis functions-based neural networks, we have proposed a hybrid learning system for object recognition, featuring: an optimization strategy (simulated annealing) in order to avoid local minima of an energy functional; and an appropriate choice of centers of the units. Further, in an attempt to achieve improved generalization ability, and to reduce the time for training, we invoke the principle of self-organization which utilises an unsupervised learning algorithm.

Thermal management of distributed electronics similar to data centers is studied using a bi-disperse porous medium (BDPM) approach. The BDPM channel comprises heat generating micro-porous square blocks, separated by macro-pores. Laminar forced convection cooling fluid of Pr = 0.7 saturates both the micro- and macro-pores. Bi-dispersion effect is induced by varying the macro-pore volume fraction phi(E), and by changing the number of porous blocks N-2, both representing re-distribution of the electronics. When 0.2 <= phi(E) <= 0.86, the heat transfer No is enhanced twice (from similar to 550 to similar to 1100) while the pressure drop Delta p* reduces almost eightfold. For phi(E) < 0.5, No reduces quickly to reach a minimum at the mono -disperse porous medium (MDPM) limit (phi(E) -> 0). Compared to N-2 = 1 case, No for BDPM configuration is high when N-2 >> 1, i.e., the micro-porous blocks are many and well distributed. The Nu increase with Re changes from non-linear to linear as N-2 increases from 1 to 81, with corresponding insignificant pumping power increase. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

A two-stage methodology is developed to obtain future projections of daily relative humidity in a river basin for climate change scenarios. In the first stage, Support Vector Machine (SVM) models are developed to downscale nine sets of predictor variables (large-scale atmospheric variables) for Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Special Report on Emissions Scenarios (SRES) (A1B, A2, B1, and COMMIT) to R (H) in a river basin at monthly scale. Uncertainty in the future projections of R (H) is studied for combinations of SRES scenarios, and predictors selected. Subsequently, in the second stage, the monthly sequences of R (H) are disaggregated to daily scale using k-nearest neighbor method. The effectiveness of the developed methodology is demonstrated through application to the catchment of Malaprabha reservoir in India. For downscaling, the probable predictor variables are extracted from the (1) National Centers for Environmental Prediction reanalysis data set for the period 1978-2000 and (2) simulations of the third-generation Canadian Coupled Global Climate Model for the period 1978-2100. The performance of the downscaling and disaggregation models is evaluated by split sample validation. Results show that among the SVM models, the model developed using predictors pertaining to only land location performed better. The R (H) is projected to increase in the future for A1B and A2 scenarios, while no trend is discerned for B1 and COMMIT.

CaSiO3:Dy3+ (1-5 mol%) nanophosphors have been prepared by a low temperature solution combustion method. The structural and luminescence (ionoluminescence; IL and photoluminescence; PL) studies have been carried out for pristine and ion irradiated samples. The XRD patterns of pristine sample show a prominent peak at (320) for the monoclinic structure of beta-CaSiO3. Upon ion irradiation, the intensity of the prominent peak is decreased at the fluence of 7.81 x 10(12) ions cm(-2) and at higher fluence of 15.62 x 10(12) ions cm(-2), the prominent peak completely vanishes. The decrease in peak intensity might be due to the stress induced point defects. On-line IL and in situ PL studies have been carried out on pelletized samples bombarded with 100 MeV Si7+ ions with fluences in the range (7.81-15.62) x 10(12) ions cm(-2). The characteristic emission peaks at 481,574, 664 and 754 nm recorded in both IL and PL are attributed to the luminescence centers activated by Dy3+ ions. It is found that IL and PL emissions intensity decreases with increase in Si7+ ion fluence. The decrease in intensity can be due to the destruction of Si-O-Si and O-Si-O type species present on the surface of the sample. FTIR studies also confirm the Si-O-Si and O-Si-O type species observed to be sensitive for swift heavy ion (SHI) irradiated samples. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A Monte Carlo model of ultrasound modulation of multiply scattered coherent light in a highly scattering media has been carried out for estimating the phase shift experienced by a photon beam on its transit through US insonified region. The phase shift is related to the tissue stiffness, thereby opening an avenue for possible breast tumor detection. When the scattering centers in the tissue medium is exposed to a deterministic forcing with the help of a focused ultrasound (US) beam, due to the fact that US-induced oscillation is almost along particular direction, the direction defined by the transducer axis, the scattering events increase, thereby increasing the phase shift experienced by light that traverses through the medium. The phase shift is found to increase with increase in anisotropy g of the medium. However, as the size of the focused region which is the region of interest (ROI) increases, a large number of scattering events take place within the ROI, the ensemble average of the phase shift (Delta phi) becomes very close to zero. The phase of the individual photon is randomly distributed over 2 pi when the scattered photon path crosses a large number of ultrasound wavelengths in the focused region. This is true at high ultrasound frequency (1 MHz) when mean free path length of photon l(s) is comparable to wavelength of US beam. However, at much lower US frequencies (100 Hz), the wavelength of sound is orders of magnitude larger than l(s), and with a high value of g (g 0.9), there is a distinct measurable phase difference for the photon that traverses through the insonified region. Experiments are carried out for validation of simulation results.

This paper presents hierarchical clustering algorithms for land cover mapping problem using multi-spectral satellite images. In unsupervised techniques, the automatic generation of number of clusters and its centers for a huge database is not exploited to their full potential. Hence, a hierarchical clustering algorithm that uses splitting and merging techniques is proposed. Initially, the splitting method is used to search for the best possible number of clusters and its centers using Mean Shift Clustering (MSC), Niche Particle Swarm Optimization (NPSO) and Glowworm Swarm Optimization (GSO). Using these clusters and its centers, the merging method is used to group the data points based on a parametric method (k-means algorithm). A performance comparison of the proposed hierarchical clustering algorithms (MSC, NPSO and GSO) is presented using two typical multi-spectral satellite images - Landsat 7 thematic mapper and QuickBird. From the results obtained, we conclude that the proposed GSO based hierarchical clustering algorithm is more accurate and robust.

Hg0.2Cd0.8Te nanorods were synthesized via solvothermal route using an air-stable Na2Te-O-3. The structural and morphological studies were done by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The diameters of the nanorods were found to be 20-50 nm. The growth of the nanorods were facilitated due to the use of CTAB as surfactant. The temperature dependent photoluminescence (PL) studies between 10-300 K show three prominent PL bands in 0.5-0.7 eV and are attributed to defect centers. The features like temperature independent peak energy and quite sensitive PL intensity which shows a thermal quenching behavior indicate that the defects are related to the compositional disorder.

We demonstrate the phase fluctuation introduced by oscillation of scattering centers in the focal volume of an ultrasound transducer in an optical tomography experiment has a nonzero mean. The conditions to be met for the above are: (i) the frequency of the ultrasound should be in the vicinity of the most dominant natural frequency of vibration of the ultrasound focal volume, (ii) the corresponding acoustic wavelength should be much larger than l(n)*, a modified transport mean-free-path applicable for phase decorrelation and (iii) the focal volume of the ultrasound transducer should not be larger than 4 - 5 times (l(n)*)(3). We demonstrate through simulations that as the ratio of the ultrasound focal volume to (l(n)*)(3) increases, the average of the phase fluctuation decreases and becomes zero when the focal volume becomes greater than around 4(l(n)*)(3); and through simulations and experiments that as the acoustic frequency increases from 100 Hz to 1 MHz, the average phase decreases to zero. Through experiments done in chicken breast we show that the average phase increases from around 110 degrees to 130 degrees when the background medium is changed from water to glycerol, indicating that the average of the phase fluctuation can be used to sense changes in refractive index deep within tissue.
