Schistosomiasis, an important disease in Brazil, is caused by a trematode of the genus Schistosoma, reaching millions of person in one of the most endemic region of this disease in the whole globe. The main goal of this work was to syntetize the 6-formyl- oxamniquine derivative and evaluate its biological activity. The 6-formyl-oxamniquine derivative was obtained by the oxidation of oxamniquine with MnO 2, applying CH 2Cl 2 as solvent at room temperature for 24 hours. The obtaintion of 6-formyl-oxamniquine derivative compound was confirmed by IR spectroscopy and 13C NMR and 1H NMR, presenting similar activity when compared to the commercial oxamniquine (Mansil®).

The effect of phosphorus levels on seedling growth, dry and fresh matter production, and in vivo acid phosphatase activity was studied in Lychnophora ericoides cultivated during 130 days after transplanting in a greenhouse. Experimental design was completely randomized, with four P 2O 5 levels (0; 40; 80; 160 mg dm -3 as triple superphosphate) and five replicates of four plants each. The used soil was dystrophic acid dark red latosol. Lychnophora ericoides is responsive to phosphate fertilization with modification in daily relative growth rate, dry matter production and distribution among the plant parts. Acid phosphatase activity had significant and negative correlation with total, leaf and stem dry matter production, as well as with P levels accumulated in the leaf tissue. On the other hand, acid phosphatase activity had significant and positive correlation with root/shoot ratio.

In this study, the antimycobacterial activity of chloroformic and methanolic extracts obtained from Byrsonima crassa leaves was evaluated. Antimycobacterial activity was assessed through the microtechnique named Microplate Alamar Blue Assay (MABA) and the promising active principles were identified by spectrophotometric analysis. The chloroformic extract presenting 62.5 μg mL-1 minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) showed to be active against tuberculosis bacillus. The MIC value of the methanolic extract was 1000 μg mL-1. For the chloroformic one , phytochemical analysis indicated that antimycobacterial activity might be related to the presence of triterpenes.

Amitraz (AM) and romifidine (RMF), two alpha-2 adrenoceptor agonists, produce sedative effect and decrease spontaneous locomotor activity (SLA) of horses. The behavioral effects and sedation after intravenous injection of RMF (0.06mg/kg) or AM 0.1mg/kg (AM 0.1) or AM 0.4mg/kg (AM 0.4) were compared in horses. RMF caused head ptosis (HP) until 45 min. The lower AM dose induced HP from 45 to 60 minutes and from 120 to 150 minutes, and the higher dose induced HP until 180 minutes. Data concerning changes in SLA were not conclusive. RMF or AM 0.4 caused a greater sedation than AM 0.1 until 20 min. After 20 minutes, the sedation caused by AM 0.4 was greater than that of RMF or AM 0.1. Romifidine caused consistent sedation until 45 minutes. The amitraz emulsion produced a dosedependent sedation until 180 minutes. Comparing to romifidine, the emulsion of amitraz induced a more substantial sedation. At dosages and dilution applied, amitraz is an effective sedative for horses.

Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis L.) is a spice from Lamiaceae family known since ancient times because its medicinal effects and, currently, several studies have pointed its antioxidant and antimicrobian effects. Lipid oxidation is a problem in food production because proceed the lost of organoleptical and nutritional qualities so required in Market. Fish salting is an ancient conservation method that expect reduce water activity and, consequently, microorganism growth in food, except halophillic bacteria. In the meantime, the inconvenient of this procedure is that the salt accelerates tissue's lipid oxidation. The aim of this work was evaluate the antioxidative and antimicrobian effects by treatment and pre treatment with rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis L.) aqueous extract in dry salted tilapia fillets, storaged in freezing temperatures. To follow the oxidative, dry salted tilapia fillets were treated or pre treated with rosemary natural extract and storage at -18°C for 240 days. Analisys of 2-thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), soluble nitrogen in trichloroacetic acid (TCA), water activity and microbiology were done. The pre treatment (3.39±0,53) and the treatment with rosemary (3.31±0.79) had oxidative index twice lower than the control treatment (6.14±1.21) in the last time of the research. The microbiological rosemary analisys showed count levels of resistant microorganisms to salt (2.0×103CFU/g of sample), whom causes the initial fillets contamination. The microbiological counts remained invariable in all groups during storage periods.

Stem cuts and seeds of Salvia officinalis were incubated on nutrient media for plantlets production and analysis of the total phenolic compounds, total flanovoids and antioxidant activity in micropropagated plants. Explants were obtained from seedlings and inoculated on MS with different concentrations of benzylaminopurine (BAP) and indolbutyric acid (IBA). After 30 and 60 days of incubation, the explants were scored for percentage of contaminated, dead and oxidized explants and mean bud numbers. For bud formation, the most efficient treatment was the medium containing BAP at 1 mg L-1, for the plantlet height the better medium was the control without the addition of plant regulator. IBA promoted the formation of few roots. Our results indicated that stem cuts incubated on media containing BAP and/or IBA did not increase the total flavonoid contents, but increased the total phenolics' by BAP and high antioxidant activity by 1 mg L-1 BAP.

Were used 64 piglets submitted eight treatments: ration with skim milk (SM), three rations with crescent levels of swine plasma (SP), three rations with whole egg (WE) and a ration with high inclusion of soybean meal (SB). Were monitored the blood parameters (BP) in pigs at 27 and at 34 days of age. The piglets were slaugther at 28 and at 35 days of age, for collections pancreas and posterior mensurements of absolut (AW) and relative weigth (RW) of pancreas and trypsin activity (TA). Treatments not influencied AW and TA. Significant effect of the crescent levels was verified of SP, with lineal reduction of the leukocytes and increase of the globular volume, to the 27 days; while to the 34 days, lineal increase of the hematias was observed. At 27 days, animals feds rations with crescent levels of SP have inferior percentage of eosinophils than others that consumed crescent levels of WE. The utilization of SP promoted smaller stimulus to the immune reply, while the use of WE promoted larger humoral reply of the piglets.

This study aimed to evaluate the soil microbiota activity associated to S. aterrimum rhizosphere, during the phytoremediation process of a soil contaminated with trifloxysulfuron-sodium. S. aterrimum was cultivated in vases (6, 0 L) filled with soil, after trifloxysulfuron-sodium, at 7.5 g ha -1, was applied or not. Every 15 days after sowing (DAS), rhizospheric soil was collected for soil microbial respiration (amount of evolved CO 2) and microbial biomass carbon (MBC) analysis. To determine herbicide residues in the soil samples, after phytoremediation, Sorghum bicolor L. was cultivated as an indicator species, in addition to high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis. The microbiota associated to S. aterrimum rhizosphere showed to be sensitive to trifloxysulfuron-sodium and may be used as a microbiological indicator of disturbances caused by this herbicide in the environment. Regarding time for remediation, 45 days of development is enough for S. aterrimum to reduce residual trifloxysulfuron- sodium to a level not able to cause toxicity to the indicator plant.

The first reliable encounter of the Harpy Eagle Harpia harpyja in the Pantanal floodplains is reported, with information on its breeding activity in the region, as well as some prey. A nest was found in August 2009, located in Barão de Melgaço County, northern portion of the Pantanal, with a 60-90-day-old eaglet. After a windy storm on August 30, the nest fell, causing the death of the nestling. In March 2010 another nest was located about 2.6 km distant from the first. We emphasize the importance of this record, and the need for a monitoring program to evaluate the true status of the Harpy Eagle in the northern portion of the Pantanal and nearby areas.

It was evaluated the effect of the addition of glutamine, polyunsaturated fatty acids or cellular wall of yeast to the diet of weaned pigs on the activity of the pancreatic enzymes (lipase, amylase and trypsin) and the intestinal mucous membrane (dipeptidase, sucrase and maltase) and on the performance. Forty-five weaned pigs were used and distributed in a randomized block design, in factorial outline, with four diets (T1 - basal diet (BD); T2 - BR + 1% glutamine; T3 - BD + 0,2% cellular wall of yeast; T4 - BD + 5% fish oil) and two slaughter ages (seven and 14 days post weaning). The performance was measured in the first two weeks post-weaning. The addition of 1% glutamine in the diet of pigs increased the specific and total activity of the amylase, and total activity of the trypsin in the second week post weaning. The others supplements not change the activity of the digestive enzymes in the pigs. Also an increase was observed in the total activity of the lipase, and specific activity of the trypsin and maltase in function of the age post-weaning. In general, the activities of the digestive enzymes were correlated positively, except for the dipeptidase that was not correlated with any other enzyme. Positive correlation was observed between weight gain and activity of the lipase and of the amylase. The supplements included in the diet not influence the performance of weaned pigs.

The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the antimicrobial activity of propolis extracts diluted in different solvents against bacteria from Staphylococcus genus. The study was performed in the Immunology and Microbiology Laboratory from Universidade Federal do Vale do São Francisco. The propolis extracts were prepared using brown propolis diluted in different solvents such as chloroform, methanol, ethyl acetate and grain alcohol. In order to determine the antimicrobial potential of extracts, agar well diffusion method was used, with controls for each diluent. After that, Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC) methods were used. All tests were performed in triplicate. In the agar well diffusion test, the measurements of the inhibition zone for propolis extract were as follows: grain alcohol and propolis (2.88mm), methanol and propolis (2.41mm), chloroform and propolis (2.40mm) and ethyl acetate and propolis (0.83mm). The MBC of propolis extracts in different solvents were 93.75 μg/mL for grain alcohol, 375 μg/mL for chloroform and methanol and 3,000 μg/ml for ethyl acetate. Statistically significant differences were achieved comparing the inhibition zones of propolis diluted in grain alcohol and ethyl acetate (2.88 and 0.83 mm, respectively). Considering the low cost of therapy and the activity of the propolis against caprine mastitis pathogens, other studies regarding in vivo activity and chemical characterization are necessary, in addition to evaluation of the toxicological aspects of propolis extracts.

Self-efficacy to regular practice of physical activity (PA) can be defined as the ability to keep practicing exercises even with some obstacles that could appear. It is constituted through the influence of 4 main sources: mastery experiences, vicarious experiences, social persuasion and physiological and affective states. The aim of the study was to measure the level of self-efficacy to the regular practice of PA, its construction sources and correlate the level of self-efficacy with each one of the sources. An amount of 196 practitioners of PA took part in this study. The results showed that the level of self-efficacy was 111.19 points in scale that can range from 18 to 162 points. The most prominent source in the construction of self-efficacy was the social persuasion, with an average of 27.64 points in scale that can range from 4 to 36 points. For the correlations, it was used the Pearson coefficient (r). Mastery experiences stood out among the other sources (r = .30). The results agree with the literature, establishing the importance of the encouragement of close people in the maintenance of the behavior to practice PA, as well as to observe positive models, success experiences and feel comfortable during the exercises. © FTCD/FIP-MOC.

The litchi erineum mite, Aceria litchii (Keifer) is found in all producing regions attacking leaves and flowers of litchi plants. The mite attack young leaves and causes the erinea on leaf surface, which later become brown galls with velvety appearance. Severe attacks can cause leaf drop and destruction of branches end directly production affecting. In 2009 year it was registered a heavy infestation of the pest on litchi plants (Litchi chinensis Sonn.) in the municipality of Casa Branca, São Paulo, Brazil (2127'O; 4702'S; 679 m altitude). In June, many galls caused by mite infestation showed a mycelium of white coloration and many eriophyid dead. The fungus was identified as Hirsutella thompsonii (Fischer). The results suggest that galls may facilitate the fungus development and its permanence on the plants. Thus, the possibility of mite biological control with H. thompsonii should be investigated.
