Impact techniques can be used to evaluate firmness on fruit. Chen and Ruiz-Altisent developed and used a 50,4 g impactor with a 19 mm diameter spherical tip, dropping from different heights onto the fruit. Another impactor device is a semispherical impacting tip attached to the end of a pivoting arm. In both devices a small accelerometer is mounted behind the impacting tip. Prototype lateral impactor on-line sorting system for high-speed firmness sorting of fruits has been developed and tested. Preliminary results shows that is possible its use on-line. The last version of an impact device has new elements that improve the data resolution, the signal-noise ratio and the precision.

Two sensors, instrumented sphere IS 100 and impact tester, have been compared to analyze the performance of six different padding materials used in Spanish fruit packing lines. Padding materials tested have been classified according to their capability to decrease impact intensities inflicted to fruit in packing lines. A procedure to test padding materials has been developed for "Golden" apples. Its basis is a logistic regression to predict bruise probability in fruit. The model combines two kinds of parameters: padding material parameters measured with IS, and fruit properties.

Characterization of a 90° Transfer Point in a Fruit Packing Line. Characteristics of the impacts suffered by the fruit on a transfer point of an experimental fruit packing line were analysed. The transfer is made up by two transporting belts at different heights forming an angle of 90°. Different tests were carried out to study the effect of transfer height, velocity, belt structure and padding on the acceleration values recorded by an instrumental sphere (IS 100). Results showed that transfer height and belt structure affect mainly impact values on the belt base, and padding affects mainly impact values registered in lateral impact. Two powered transfer decelerators were tested at the same point with the aim of decreasing impacts suffered by the fruit.

Mealiness, a textural disorder that produces quality loss, combines softness and absence of juiciness. The only one (destructive) test to measure it, combines information from a mechanical test on fruit probes to classify the samples according to instrumental mealiness. Time-domain laser reflectance spectroscopy (TDRS) is able to assess simultaneously and independently the absorption of the light inside the irradiated body (µa coefficient) and the scattering of the photons across the tissues (µS, transport scattering coeff.) measured at each wavelength. Using VIS&NIR lasers as light sources, TDRS was applied to Golden Delicious and Cox apples (n=90), conforming batches of untreated samples and storage-treated (20°C&95%RH) to induce mealiness development. The collected database was clustered into different groups according to their instrumental mealiness. Optical variables were used to build discriminant functions, achieving classification scores 75-89% of correctly identified mealy apples.

A software for simulation of bruise occurrence in fruit grading lines, SIMLIN 2.0, is presented. Examples of application are included on the simulation of handling Sudanell peaches. SIMLIN 2.0 provides algorithms for the selection of logistic bruise prediction models adjusted on the basis of user designed laboratory tests. Handled fruits are characterised for simulation by means of statistical features on the independent variables of the logistic model. SIMLIN 2.0 allows to display different line designs establishing their aggressiveness from internal data bases. Aggressiveness is characterised in terms of data gathered with electronic products IS-100 type. The software provides graphical outputs which enable decision making on the improvement strategies of the lines and the selection of the product to be handled.

The "Libra Nose" electronic nose has eight Quartz Microbalance Sensors. When gas molecules are adsorbed onto the quartz crystal surface, the oscillation frequency changes in proportion to the amount of mass. The response of sensors depends on numerous factors that may be difficult to control, such as the temperature and the humidity of the carrier gas. All these factors cause changes in the selectivity of sensors affecting the reproducibility of measurements. In this paper additive a multiplicative corrections are proposed to be applied to the raw sensors's signal in order to eliminate sources of variations. After these corrections, the sensors' response gives useful information to distinguish between batch of apples and pears with different ripeness stage.

A non destructive impact sensor to measure fruit firmness has been installed on the sizer chain of an experimental fruit packing line. The sensor measures the fruit firmness related to the acceleration-time curve supplied by an accelerometer attached to an impacting arm. The sensor works correctly at a speed of 5 to 7 fruits per second. Ratio A/t (maximum acceleration value divided by its corresponding time), mean, and maximum slopes of the curves supplied by the accelerometer, were well correlated with the firmness data obtained in laboratory with the load-unload test. The accelerometer signal allows the classification of the fruit in three levels of firmness, by means of a specific software.

The increasing of quality fruit demanded by the consumers is originating an advance in the development and application of sensors capable of measuring parameters of quality (sugar, acids, firmness, etc) on a non destructive way. Some of these sensors are already operative for their use in laboratory and even in lines. The Physical Properties laboratory of the Polytechnic University of Madrid, is developing different sensors for their implementation in lines. One of them is a non destructive impact sensor to measure fruit firmness.

ABSTRACT Currently, various earthquakes have made clear first, the importance of city planning and secondly, the great influence that has the behaviour of buildings as a consequence of the results of human and economic losses. Faced with the impossibility of avoiding the occurrence of earthquakes and predicting its with a small margin of time to take action in the short term, the reduction of the vulnerability of exposed elements is the most effective measure to prevent damage and to prevent the disaster. There are several previous studies, Norman B. Green (1980), Teresa Guevara López (2009-2012) collecting criteria already widespread within the seismic bibliography and we can find some aspects from standard seismic precursor in this field (for example, the Peruvian) to initially establish urban - seismic principles. In addition, several projects related to seismic risk, RisK-EU (2003), SERAMAR (Lars Abrahamczyk et al., 2013) have developed methodologies that classify the vulnerability of buildings taking into account modifiers for behaviours and irregular configurations in seismical terms. This paper develops an empirical methodology to identify and characterize the irregular urban parameters seismically, graduate its relationship with the building damages after an earthquake and thus reduce the seismic vulnerability of cities. The methodology developed in this thesis applies in the city of Lorca, Region of Murcia. Fieldwork where buildings are classified according to their structural type and its urban performance parameters. Through a statistical study the correlation with damage of buildings is analyzed after the earthquake of May 11, 2011. Previously a classification of the buildings has been made according to the kind of soil according to the Eurocodigo 8 (Navarro et al, 2012). Finally, you get an estimate of the building habitability in Lorca. As a result, this classification adopted the criterion contained in various international recommendations, most of which are based on the documentation published by the ATC - Applied Technology Council, habitable buildings (not damage -damage non-structural) and non habitable buildings (structural damage).

The final purpose is the identification of: a) the effects of various choices in transport planning, both at long term and strategic level; b) the most effective policies of mobility management. The preliminary work was articulated in the following steps: 1) definition of protected area on the basis of ecological and socio-economic criteria and legislative constraints; 2) analysis of mobility needs in the protected areas; 3) reconstruction of the state of the art of mobility management in natural parks at European level; 4) analysis of used traffic flows measurement methods; 5) analysis of environmental impacts due to transport systems modelling (limited to air pollution and noise); 6) identification of mitigation measures to the potentially applied. The whole methodology has been firstly tested on the case study of the National Park of ?Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga? and further validated on the National Park of ?Gargano?, both located Italy: i) the concerned area has been zoned according to the land-use peculiarities; ii) the local situations of transport infrastructure (roads and parking), services (public transport systems) and rules (traffic regulations) have been mapped with references to physical and functional attributes; iii) the mobility, both systematic and touristic, has been synthetically represented in an origin-destination matrix. By means of an assignment model it has been determined the distribution of flows and the corresponding average speeds to quantify gaseous and noise emissions. On this basis the environmental criticalities in the reference scenario have been highlighted, as well as some alternative scenarios including both operational and infrastructural measures have been identified. The comparison between the projects and the reference scenario allowed the quantification of the effects (variation of emissions) for each scenario and a selection of the most effective management actions to be taken.
