The scanning thermogram of a block sample of a double-base propellant shows a shoulder around 200°C which is not observed in a powder sample of the sample propellant. The heat of decomposition was also found to be different In the two cases. Product analysis and activation energy calculations show that nitroglycerine un dergoes decomposition in the block sample, whereas it vaporizes in the powder sample.

"Since the founding days of the Republic, the relationship between American unionism and mass immigration has been contentious. No issue has caused the labor movement more agony and irony. It is no surprise, therefore, that throughout its history the American labor movement has sought to influence U.S. immigration policy."

Complexation of valinomycin (VM) with the divalent cation Ca2+ in a lipophilic solvent, acetonitrile (CH3-CN), has been studied by using circular dichroism and proton and carbon- 13 nuclear magnetic resonance (‘H NMR and I3C NMR). From analyses of the spectral data, it is concluded that VM forms a 2:l (peptideion-peptide) sandwich complex with Ca2+, at low concentration of VM. At moderate conocentrations of the salt, in addition to the sandwich complex, an equimolar (1:l) complex different from those observed for potassium and sodium is also observed. At very large concentrations of the calcium salt, the data suggested a complex with a conformation similar to that of the free VM in polar solvents. Possible conformations for the sandwich and the equimolar VM-calcium complexes are proposed.

Pro-Gly segments in peptides and proteins are prone to adopt the 0-turn conformation. This paper reports experimental data for the presence of this conformation in a linear tripeptide N-acetyl-L-prolylglycyl-L-phenylalanineb oth in the solid state and in solution. X-ray diffraction data on the tripeptide crystal show that it exists in the type I1 0-turn conformation. CD and proton NMR data show that this conformation persists in trifluoroethanol and methanol solutions in equilibrium with the nonhydrogen-bonded structures. Isomerization around the acetyl-prolyl bond is seen to take place in dimethyl sulfoxide solutions of the tripeptide.

The nucleic acid binding properties of the testis protein, TP, were studied with the help of physical techniques, namely, fluorescence quenching, UV difference absorption spectroscopy, and thermal melting. Results of quenching of tyrosine fluorescence of TP upon its binding to double-stranded and denatured rat liver nucleosome core DNA and poly(rA) suggest that the tyrosine residues of TP interact/intercalate with the bases of these nucleic acids. From the fluorescence quenching data, obtained at 50 mM NaCl concentration, the apparent association constants for binding of TP to native and denatured DNA and poly(rA) were calculated to be 4.4 X 10(3) M-1, 2.86 X 10(4) M-1, and 8.5 X 10(4) M-1, respectively. UV difference absorption spectra upon TP binding to poly(rA) and rat liver core DNA showed a TP-induced hyperchromicity at 260 nm which is suggestive of local melting of poly(rA) and DNA. The results from thermal melting studies of binding of TP to calf thymus DNA at 1 mM NaCl as well as 50 mM NaCl showed that although at 1 mM NaCl TP brings about a slight stabilization of the DNA against thermal melting, a destabilization of the DNA was observed at 50 mM NaCl. From these results it is concluded that TP, having a higher affinity for single-stranded nucleic acids, destabilizes double- stranded DNA, thus behaving like a DNA-melting protein.

For an understanding of the cation selectivity and general binding characteristics of macrotetralide antibiotic nonactin (NA) with ions of different sizes and charges, the nature of binding of divalent cation, Ca2+, to NA and conformation of the NA-Ca2+ complex have been studied by use of 270-MHz proton nuclear magnetic resonance ('H NMR) and carbon-13 nuclear magnetic resonance (13C NMR). The calcium ion induced significantly large changes in chemical shifts for H7, H2, H3, and H5 protons of NA and relatively small changes for H18 and H2' protons. Changes in I3C chemical shift were quite large for carbonyl carbon, C,; it is noteworthy that in the NA-K+ complex, H2 and H2' protons practically do not show any change during complexation and carbonyl carbon shows a much smaller chemical shift change.

We have derived a versatile gene-based test for genome-wide association studies (GWAS). Our approach, called VEGAS (versatile gene-based association study), is applicable to all GWAS designs, including family-based GWAS, meta-analyses of GWAS on the basis of summary data, and DNA-pooling-based GWAS, where existing approaches based on permutation are not possible, as well as singleton data, where they are. The test incorporates information from a full set of markers (or a defined subset) within a gene and accounts for linkage disequilibrium between markers by using simulations from the multivariate normal distribution. We show that for an association study using singletons, our approach produces results equivalent to those obtained via permutation in a fraction of the computation time. We demonstrate proof-of-principle by using the gene-based test to replicate several genes known to be associated on the basis of results from a family-based GWAS for height in 11,536 individuals and a DNA-pooling-based GWAS for melanoma in approximately 1300 cases and controls. Our method has the potential to identify novel associated genes; provide a basis for selecting SNPs for replication; and be directly used in network (pathway) approaches that require per-gene association test statistics. We have implemented the approach in both an easy-to-use web interface, which only requires the uploading of markers with their association p-values, and a separate downloadable application.

The influence of Lorentz and Doppler line-broadening mechanisms on the small-signal optical gain of lasers and, in particular, gasdynamic lasers, is discussed. A relationship between the critical parameter reflecting the line-broadening mechanisms and some of the important parameters arising out of the gain optimization studies in CO2-N2 gasdynamic lasers is established. Using this relationship, methods by which the deleterious effect of the Doppler mechanisms on small-signal gain can be suppressed are suggested. Porphyrins appended with crown ether, benzo-15-crown-5, at the methine positions have been synthesized and characterized. The fully and partially substituted porphyrins and their metallo (Co, Cu, and Zn) derivatives describe one or more ether cavities in the periphery that are capable of recognizing spherical cations. The ability of these macrocycles to complex cations (Na+, K+, Mg2+, Ca2+, Ba2', and NH4+) is investigated by use of visible, 'H NMR, ESR, and emission spectral studies. The tetrasubstituted crown porphyrin (TCP) exhibits very high selectivity for K+. The cations (K', Ba2+, and NH4+) that require two crown ether cavities for complexation promote dimerization of the porphyrins. The ESR study of the cation-induced porphyrin dimers reveals axial symmetry with the porphyrin planes separated by -4.2 A. This distance increases from the fully substituted to partially substituted porphyrins. The cations (K', Ba2+, and NH4') quench efficiently the fluorescence of the free base porphyrins and their metallo derivatives. The quenching process is attributed to the steric geometry of the dimers.

ABSTRACT: Infrared studies of synthetic alamethicin fragments and model peptides containing a-aminoisobutyric acid (Aib) have been carried out in solution. Tripeptides and larger fragments exhibit a strong tendency to form /3 turns, stabilized by 4 - 1 10-atom hydrogen bonds. Dipeptides show less well-defined structures, though C5 and C7 conformations are detectable. Conformational restrictions imposed by Aib residues result in these peptides populating a limited range of states. Integrated intensities of the hydrogen-bonded N-H stretching band can be used to quantitate the number of intramolecular hydrogen bonds. Predictions made from infrared data are in excellent agreement with nuclear magnetic resonance and X-ray diffraction studies. Assignments of the urethane and tertiary amide carbonyl groups in the free state have been made in model peptides. Shifts to lower frequency on hydrogen bonding are observed for the carbonyl groups. The 1-6 segment of alamethicin is shown to adopt a 310 helical structure stabilized by four intramolecular hydrogen bonds. The fragments Boc-Leu-Aib-Pro-Val-Aib-OMe (1 2-1 6) and Boc-Gly-Leu-Aib-Pro-Val-Aib-OMe (1 1-1 6) possess structures involving 4 - 1 and 5 - 1 hydrogen bonds. Supporting evidence for these structures is obtained from proton nuclear magnetic resonance studies.

This paper describes the dielectric behavior of an insulator-conductor composite, namely, the wax-graphite composite. The variation of specific capacitance of these composites with parameters such as volume fraction and grain size of the conducting particles and temperature has been studied. These observed variations have been explained using the same model [C. Rajagopal and M. Satyam, J. Appl. Phys. 49, 5536 (1978)] which explains electrical conduction in composites. The specific capacitance of these materials appears to be governed by the contact capacitance between the conducting particles and the number of contacts each particle has with its neighbors. The variation of specific capacitance with temperature is attributed to the change in contact area.
