Several substituted anilines were converted to binary salts with L-tartaric acid. Second harmonic generation (SHG) activities of these salts were determined. The crystal packing in two structures, (i) m-anisidinium-L-tartrate monohydrate (i) and (ii) p-toluidinium-L-tartrate (2), studied using X-ray diffraction demonstrates that extensive hydrogen bonding steers the components into a framework which has a direct bearing on the SHG activity

Electrooxidation of methanol has been studied in sulphuric acid electrolyte at 60 degrees C on carbon-supported Pt-WO3-x, electrodes employing varying amounts of WO3-x,. It is found that the electrodes containing (3:1) Pt-WO3-x, composite catalyst exhibit a higher catalytic activity towards methanol electrooxidation than platinized carbon electrodes without WO3-x. In the light of the XPS and XRD data on the carbon-supported (3:1) Pt-WOx sample, it is speculated that the WOx is present in the form of an oxyhydroxide, which can promote surface oxy-species on platinum by proton transfer.

The enantioselective synthesis of the natural products cladospolide B, cladospolide C, and iso-cladospolide B has been accomplished from tartaric acid. Key reactions in the synthetic sequence include the elaboration of a gamma-hydroxy amide derived from tartaric acid via alkene cross metathesis, Yamaguchi lactonization, and ring closing metathesis. A beta (39-43 aminoacid residues) is the principal peptide component of amyloid deposits in Alzheimer's disease (AD). A beta peptide is derived from the amyloid precursor protein (APP) in which mutations give rise to many forms of familial AD. Aluminium is reported to play a key role in inducing conformational change in the synthetic beta-amyloid peptide (1-40)from alpha-helix to beta-pleated sheet, leading to aggregation and fibrillar formation. We have studied the interaction of amino acid-Al complexes such as D-Asp-Al and L-Glu-Al with A beta(1-40) in TFE/buffer (70% TFE and 30% H2O v/v pH 6.7) mixture using CD spectroscopy. The interaction of either of these amino acid complexes with A beta(1-40) results in loss of alpha-helical content and the peptide is more unstructured compared to free Al3+ in the solution. Our data strongly support the idea, that the Al3+ in the form of aminoacid-Al complexes is more effective in inducing random coil conformation in the A beta peptide than the free Al3+ present in the solution.

The coordinating behavior of a new dihydrazone ligand, 2,6-bis(3-methoxysalicylidene) hydrazinocarbonyl]pyridine towards manganese(II), cobalt(II), nickel(II), copper(II), zinc(II) and cadmium(II) has been described. The metal complexes were characterized by magnetic moments, conductivity measurements, spectral (IR, NMR, UV-Vis, FAB-Mass and EPR) and thermal studies. The ligand crystallizes in triclinic system, space group P-1, with alpha=98.491(10)degrees, beta=110.820(10)degrees and gamma=92.228(10)degrees. The cell dimensions are a=10.196(7)angstrom, b=10.814(7)angstrom, c=10.017(7)angstrom, Z=2 and V=1117.4(12). IR spectral studies reveal the nonadentate behavior of the ligand. All the complexes are neutral in nature and possess six-coordinate geometry around each metal center. The X-band EPR spectra of copper(II) complex at both room temperature and liquid nitrogen temperature showed unresolved broad signals with g(iso) = 2.106. Cyclic voltametric studies of copper(II) complex at different scan rates reveal that all the reaction occurring are irreversible. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Acid denaturation of calf thymus DNA in vitro followed by acridine orange (AO) binding induced a 112% increase in the emission of red, a 58% decrease in green, and a consequential decrease in the ratio of green:red fluorescences from 1.7 to 0.9. This metachromatic property of AO on binding to DNA following acid denaturation was utilized to study the susceptibility of normal and ovine follicle-stimulating hormone (oFSH) actively immunized bonnet monkey spermatozoa voided throughout the year. For analyses, the scattergram generated by the emission of red and green fluorescences by 10,000 AO-bound sperm from each semen sample was divided into 4 quadrant zones representing percentage cells fluorescing high green-low red (Q1), high green-high red (Q2), low green-low red (Q3) and low green-high red. (Q4). Normal monkey sperm obtained during the months of July-December exhibited 76, 13, and 11% cells in Q2, Q3, and Q4 quadrants, respectively. However, during January-June, when the females of the species are markedly subfertile, noncycling, and amenorrhoeic, the spermatozoa ejaculated by the male monkeys exhibited 38, 39, and 23% sperm in Q2, Q3, and Q4, respectively, the differences being highly significant (p < .01-.001). FSH deprivation induced significant shifts in fluorescence emissions, from respective controls, with 39, 33, and 28% cells in Q2, Q3, and Q4, respectively, during July-December, and 15, 48, and 37% sperm in Q2, Q3, and Q4 quadrants, respectively, during January-June. It is postulated that the altered kinetics of germ cell transformations and the deficient spermiogenesis observed earlier following FSH deprivation in these monkeys may have induced the enhanced susceptibility to acid denaturation in sperm.

A series of bile acid-based crown ethers (7a-c,12 and 13) were easily constructed from readily available precursors. Measurement of association constants (K-a) with alkali metal picrates in CHCl3 showed that azacrown ethers 7a-c and Chola-Cuowns 12 and 13 show greater binding towards Rb+ and K+. The presence of the aromatic moieties showed subtle changes in the binding properties. Insight II minimized structures show very different conformations of aromatic units in 7a-b and 13.

The adsorption of poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) onto alumina has been studied as a function of pH, both individually and in the presence of each other. The adsorption density of PAA is found to decrease with an increase of pH while that of PVA shows the opposite trend. In a binary system containing PAA and PVA, the presence of PVA does not affect the adsorption of PAA onto alumina, but the addition of PAA diminishes the adsorption of PVA in the pH range investigated. The adsorption isotherm of PAA at acidic pH exhibits high-affinity Langmuirian behavior. The isotherms for PVA appear rounded and are of the low-affinity type, Once again the adsorption isotherms of PAA remain unaltered in the presence of PVA whereas those of PVA are significantly affected resulting in a lowering of the adsorption density consequent to PAA addition. A variation in the sequence of addition of PAA and PVA does not affect the adsorption behavior of either of the polymers, The electrokinetic behavior of alumina with PAA is hardly influenced by the addition of PVA, On the other hand, the electrophoretic mobility of alumina in the presence of PVA is significantly altered in the presence of PAA and closely resembles the trend observed with PAA alone. Desorption studies reveal that over 80% of PVA could be desorbed in the pH range 3-9 whereas in the case of PAA, the percent desorption increases from 20 to about 70% as the pH is increased from about 3 to 8. Solution conductivity tests confirm interaction of aluminum species and PAA in the bulk solution. FTIR spectroscopic data provide evidence in support of hydrogen bonding and chemical interaction in the case of the PAA-alumina system and hydrogen bonding with respect to the PVA-alumina interaction. Two drug-drug co-crystals of the anti-tuberculosis drugs isoniazid (INH), pyrazinamide (PYR) and 4-aminosalicylic acid (PAS) are reported. The first is the 1 : 1 molecular complex of INH and PAS. The second is the monohydrate of the 1 : 1 complex of PYR and PAS. The crystal structures of both co-crystals are characterized by a number of hydrogen bonded synthons. Hydrogen bonding of the COOH center dot center dot center dot N-pyridine type is found in both cases. In the INH : PAS co-crystal, there are two symmetry independent COOH center dot center dot center dot center dot N-pyridine hydrogen bonds. In one of these, the H-atom is located on the carboxylic group and is indicative of a co-crystal. In the second case, partial proton transfer occurs across the hydrogen bond, and the extent of proton transfer depends on the temperature. This is more indicative of a salt. Drug-drug co-crystals may have some bearing in the treatment of tuberculosis.

When ketoximes admixed with solid metaboric acid (formed from boric acid at 100degreesC/0.1 Torr) are heated (similar to 140degreesC/7-42 h), the corresponding amides or lactams are produced in excellent yields (62-92%) via the Beckmann reaction. Aromatic aldoximes undergo both dehydration to the nitrile as well as (non-stereospecific) rearrangement under the above conditions. The absence of solvent, and the mildness and low toxicity of boric acid, characterise the present procedure. CO. 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Several secondary alcohols undergo the Mitsunobu reaction with triphenylphosphine, diethyl azodicarboxylate and (1S)-(+)-ketopinic acid (0.5 equiv. each relative to alcohol) in CH2Cl2 solution at -23degreesC, to furnish the chiral secondary alcohol and its ketopinate ester (d.e. >95%,). Chromatographic separation of these and subsequent hydrolysis of the ketopinate ester (KOH EtOH/0degreesC) provides the chiral secondary alcohol in overall yields of similar to75% and e.e. of similar to80%. When the above Mitsunobu reaction is performed with 1 equiv. of all the reactants. an effective dynamic kinetic resolution of the alcohol is observed in two cases, the ketopinate esters being isolated in 63 and 75% yields and >95% d.e. Several endogenous and exogenous chemical species, particularly the so-called reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reactive nitrogen oxide species (RNOS), attack deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) in biological systems producing DNA lesions which hamper normal cell functioning and cause various diseases including mutation and cancer. The guanine (G) base of DNA among all the bases is most susceptible and certain modified guanines get involved in mispairing with other bases during DNA replication. The biological system repairs the abnormal base pairs, but those that are still left cause mutation and cancer. Anti-oxidants present in biological systems can scavenge the ROS and RNOS. Thus three types of molecular events occur in biological media: (i) DNA damage, (ii) DNA repair, and (iii) prevention of DNA damage by scavenging ROS and RNOS. Quantum mechanical methods may be used to unravel molecular mechanisms of such phenomena. Some recent quantum theoretical results obtained on these problems are reviewed here.
