Proton NMR relaxation measurements have been carried out in anti-ferroelectric Betaine phosphate (BP), ferroelectric Betaine phosphite (BPI) and the mixed system BPI(1-x)BPx, at 11.4MHz and 23.3MHz from 300K to 80K for x=0.0, 0.25, 0.45, 0.85, and 1.0. The temperature dependence of spin lattice relaxation time T, exhibits two minima as expected from the BPP model in BP and BPI. The Larmor frequency dependence of T, in the mixed system is rather unusual and exhibits different slopes for the low temperature wings at the two frequencies, which is a clear experimental evidence of the presence of different methyl groups with different activation energies (E-a) indicating disorder.

The linear stability analysis of a plane Couette flow of viscoelastic fluid have been studied with the emphasis on two dimensional disturbances with wave number k similar to Re-1/2, where Re is Reynolds number based on maximum velocity and channel width. We employ three models to represent the dilute polymer solution: the classical Oldroyd-B model, the Oldroyd-B model with artificial diffusivity and the non-homogeneous polymer model. The result of the linear stability analysis is found to be sensitive to the polymer model used. While the plane Couette flow is found to be stable to infinitesimal disturbances for the first two models, the last one exhibits a linear instability.

Amyloid beta (A beta) is the major etiological factor implicated in Alzheimer's disease (AD). A beta(42) self-assembles to form oligomers and fibrils via multiple aggregation process. The recent studies aimed to decrease A beta levels or prevention of A beta aggregation which are the major targets for therapeutic intervention. Natural products as alternatives for AD drug discovery are a current trend. We evidenced that Caesalpinia crista leaf aqueous extract has anti-amyloidogenic potential. The studies on pharmacological properties of C. crista are very limited. Our study focused on ability of C. crista leaf aqueous extract on the prevention of (i) the formation of oligomers and aggregates from monomers (Phase I: A beta(42) + extract co-incubation); (ii) the formation of fibrils from oligomers (Phase II: extract added after oligomers formation); and (iii) dis-aggregation of pre-formedfibrils (Phase III: aqueous extract added to matured fibrils and incubated for 9 days). The aggregation kinetics was monitored using thioflavin-T assay and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results showed that C. crista aqueous extract could able to inhibit the A beta(42) aggregation from monomers and oligomers and also able todis-aggregate the pre-formed fibrils. The study provides an insight on finding new natural products for AD therapeutics. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. All rights reserved.

Ultrafine powders of extra pure Ti1−xSnxO2, where o < x < 1, prepared by the hydrothermal method are pale yellow in color. They show photocatalytic activity after platinization, in the visible light (420–550 nm) for H2-production from aqueous solutions containing sacrificial donors such as hypophosphite. The spectral sensitization is shown to be due to peroxotitanium species in the rutile-type structure. Peroxide ion, O22−, arises from the dimerization of O−, the hole centres, produced during the disproportionative decomposition of residual hydroxyls: OH− = O− + H. Higher OH contents in TixSnxO2 is due to the amphoteric chemistry of oxocompounds of tin.

A simple, sufficiently accurate and efficient method for approximate solutions of the Falkner-Skan equation is proposed here for a wide range of the pressure gradient parameter. The proposed approximate solutions are obtained utilising a known solution of another differential equation.

Molecular dynamics simulations are used to examine the changes in water density and hydration characteristics of NaCl solutions confined in slit-shaped graphitic pores. Using a structural signature, we define the hydration limit as the salt concentration at which a sharp drop in the hydration number is observed. At small pores (H = 8.0-10 angstrom), confined water does not possess bulk-like features and remains in a layered arrangement between two surfaces. Despite this high degree of confinement, ions are able to form a quasi-2D hydration shell between two surfaces. Our results indicate the strong propensity of ions to form the first hydration shell, even under extremely confined aqueous environments. The hydration of ions is seen to weakly perturb the oxygen density distributions between two surfaces. The hydration number of Na+ reduces to about 4.15 at a pore width of H = 0.8 nm, when compared with the bulk hydration number of 6.25. At larger pore widths, above H = 16 angstrom, where bulk-like water densities are observed in the central regions of the pore, the hydration number is above 6.

Colloid of palladium nanoparticles has been prepared by the Solvated Metal Atom Dispersion (SMAD) method. Reaction of Pd(0) nanopowder obtained upon precipitation from the colloid, with ammonia borane (H3N center dot BH3, AB) in aqueous solutions at room temperature results in the generation of active hydrogen atoms. The active hydrogen atoms either combine with one another resulting in H-2 evolution or diffuse into the Pd lattice to afford PdHx. Diffusion of hydrogen atoms leads to an expansion of the Pd lattice. The diffused hydrogen atoms are distributed uniformly over the entire particle. These features were established using powder XRD and electron microscopy studies. The H-1 NMR spectral studies of PdHx before and after desorption of H-2 revealed that the hydrogen atoms trapped inside Pd lattice are hydridic in nature. Desorption of hydrogen from PdHx did not result in complete reversibility suggesting that some hydrogen atoms are strongly trapped inside the Pd lattice. (C) 2010 Professor T. Nejat Veziroglu. Semi-similar solutions of the unsteady compressible laminar boundary layer flow over two-dimensional and axisymmetric bodies at the stagnation point with mass transfer are studied for all the second-order boundary layer effects when the free stream velocity varies arbitrarily with time. The set of partial differential equations governing the unsteady compressible second-order boundary layers representing all the effects are derived for the first time. These partial differential equations are solved numerically using an implicit finite-difference scheme. The results are obtained for two particular unsteady free stream velocity distributions: (a) an accelerating stream and (b) a fluctuating stream. It is observed that the total skin friction and heat transfer are strongly affected by the surface mass transfer and wall temperature. However, their variation with time is significant only for large times. The second-order boundary layer effects are found to be more pronounced in the case of no mass transfer or injection as compared to that for suction.

Darken's quadratic formalism is extended to multicomponent solutions. Equations are developed for the representation of the integral and partial excess free energies, entropies and enthalpies in dilute multicomponent solutions. Quadratic formalism applied to multicomponent solutions is thermodynamically consistent. The formalism is compared with the conventional second order Maclaurin series or interaction parameter representation and the relations between them are derived. Advantages of the quadratic formalism are discussed.

It is shown that dilute suspensions of membranes have strongly frequency-dependent viscosities. This behaviour should be seen in a variety of measurements such as capillary flow, mechanical impedance and ultrasound damping.
