We produce five flavour models for the lepton sector. All five models fit perfectly well - at the 1 sigma level - the existing data on the neutrino mass-squared differences and on the lepton mixing angles. The models are based on the type I seesaw mechanism, on a Z(2) symmetry for each lepton flavour, and either on a (spontaneously broken) symmetry under the interchange of two lepton flavours or on a (spontaneously broken) CP symmetry incorporating that interchange - or on both symmetries simultaneously. Each model makes definite predictions both for the scale of the neutrino masses and for the phase delta in lepton mixing; the fifth model also predicts a correlation between the lepton mixing angles theta(12) and theta(23).

We study neutrino masses and mixing in the context of flavor models with A(4) symmetry, three scalar doublets in the triplet representation, and three lepton families. We show that there is no representation assignment that yields a dimension-5 mass operator consistent with experiment. We then consider a type-I seesaw with three heavy right-handed neutrinos, explaining in detail why it fails, and allowing us to show that agreement with the present neutrino oscillation data can be recovered with the inclusion of dimension-3 heavy neutrino mass terms that break softly the A(4) symmetry.

A great number of low-temperature geothermal fields occur in Northern-Portugal related to fractured rocks. The most important superficial manifestations of these hydrothermal systems appear in pull-apart tectonic basins and are strongly conditioned by the orientation of the main fault systems in the region. This work presents the interpretation of gravity gradient maps and 3D inversion model produced from a regional gravity survey. The horizontal gradients reveal a complex fault system. The obtained 3D model of density contrast puts into evidence the main fault zone in the region and the depth distribution of the granitic bodies. Their relationship with the hydrothermal systems supports the conceptual models elaborated from hydrochemical and isotopic water analyses. This work emphasizes the importance of the role of the gravity method and analysis to better understand the connection between hydrothermal systems and the fractured rock pattern and surrounding geology. In this work, we present a neural network (NN) based method designed for 3D rigid-body registration of FMRI time series, which relies on a limited number of Fourier coefficients of the images to be aligned. These coefficients, which are comprised in a small cubic neighborhood located at the first octant of a 3D Fourier space (including the DC component), are then fed into six NN during the learning stage. Each NN yields the estimates of a registration parameter. The proposed method was assessed for 3D rigid-body transformations, using DC neighborhoods of different sizes. The mean absolute registration errors are of approximately 0.030 mm in translations and 0.030 deg in rotations, for the typical motion amplitudes encountered in FMRI studies. The construction of the training set and the learning stage are fast requiring, respectively, 90 s and 1 to 12 s, depending on the number of input and hidden units of the NN. We believe that NN-based approaches to the problem of FMRI registration can be of great interest in the future. For instance, NN relying on limited K-space data (possibly in navigation echoes) can be a valid solution to the problem of prospective (in frame) FMRI registration.

Besnoitia besnoiti is an apicomplexan parasite responsible for bovine besnoitiosis, a disease with a high prevalence in tropical and subtropical regions and re-emerging in Europe. Despite the great economical losses associated with besnoitiosis, this disease has been underestimated and poorly studied, and neither an effective therapy nor an efficacious vaccine is available. Protein disulfide isomerase (PDI) is an essential enzyme for the acquisition of the correct three-dimensional structure of proteins. Current evidence suggests that in Neosporacaninum and Toxoplasmagondii, which are closely related to B. besnoiti, PDI play an important role in host cell invasion, is a relevant target for the host immune response, and represents a promising drug target and/or vaccine candidate. In this work, we present the nucleotide sequence of the B. besnoiti PDI gene. BbPDI belongs to the thioredoxin-like superfamily (cluster 00388) and is included in the PDI_a family (cluster defined cd02961) and the PDI_a_PDI_a'_c subfamily (cd02995). A 3D theoretical model was built by comparative homology using Swiss-Model server, using as a template the crystallographic deduced model of Tapasin-ERp57 (PDB code 3F8U chain C). Analysis of the phylogenetic tree for PDI within the phylum apicomplexa reinforces the close relationship among B. besnoiti, N. caninum and T. gondii. When subjected to a PDI-assay based on the polymerisation of reduced insulin, recombinant BbPDI expressed in E. coli exhibited enzymatic activity, which was inhibited by bacitracin. Antiserum directed against recombinant BbPDI reacted with PDI in Western blots and by immunofluorescence with B. besnoiti tachyzoites and bradyzoites.

A navegação de veículos autónomos em ambientes não estruturados continua a ser um problema em aberto. A complexidade do mundo real ainda é um desafio. A difícil caracterização do relevo irregular, dos objectos dinâmicos e pouco distintos(e a inexistência de referências de localização) tem sido alvo de estudo e do desenvolvimento de vários métodos que permitam de uma forma eficiente, e em tempo real, modelizar o espaço tridimensional. O trabalho realizado ao longo desta dissertação insere-se na estratégia do Laboratório de Sistemas Autónomos (LSA) na pesquisa e desenvolvimento de sistemas sensoriais que possibilitem o aumento da capacidade de percepção das plataformas robóticas. O desenvolvimento de um sistema de modelização tridimensional visa acrescentar aos projectos LINCE (Land INtelligent Cooperative Explorer) e TIGRE (Terrestrial Intelligent General proposed Robot Explorer) maior autonomia e capacidade de exploração e mapeamento. Apresentamos alguns sensores utilizados para a aquisição de modelos tridimensionais, bem como alguns dos métodos mais utilizados para o processo de mapeamento, e a sua aplicação em plataformas robóticas. Ao longo desta dissertação são apresentadas e validadas técnicas que permitem a obtenção de modelos tridimensionais. É abordado o problema de analisar a cor e geometria dos objectos, e da criação de modelos realistas que os representam. Desenvolvemos um sistema que nos permite a obtenção de dados volumétricos tridimensionais, a partir de múltiplas leituras de um Laser Range Finder bidimensional de médio alcance. Aos conjuntos de dados resultantes associamos numa nuvem de pontos coerente e referenciada. Foram desenvolvidas e implementadas técnicas de segmentação que permitem inspeccionar uma nuvem de pontos e classifica-la quanto às suas características geométricas, bem como ao tipo de estruturas que representem. São apresentadas algumas técnicas para a criação de Mapas de Elevação Digital, tendo sido desenvolvida um novo método que tira partido da segmentação efectuada

Web tornou-se uma ferramenta indispensável para a sociedade moderna. A capacidade de aceder a enormes quantidades de informação, disponível em praticamente todo o mundo, é uma grande vantagem para as nossas vidas. No entanto, a quantidade avassaladora de informação disponível torna-se um problema, que é o de encontrar a informação que precisamos no meio de muita informação irrelevante. Para nos ajudar nesta tarefa, foram criados poderosos motores de pesquisa online, que esquadrinham a Web à procura dos melhores resultados, segundo os seus critérios, para os dados que precisamos. Actualmente, os motores de pesquisa em voga, usam um formato de apresentação de resultados simples, que consiste apenas numa caixa de texto para o utilizador inserir as palavras-chave sobre o tema que quer pesquisar e os resultados são dispostos sobre uma lista de hiperligações ordenada pela relevância que o motor atribui a cada resultado. Porém, existem outras formas de apresentar resultados. Uma das alternativas é apresentar os resultados sobre interfaces em 3 dimensões. É nestes tipos de sistemas que este trabalho vai incidir, os motores de pesquisa com interfaces em 3 dimensões. O problema é que as páginas Web não estão preparadas para serem consumidas por este tipo de motores de pesquisa. Para resolver este problema foi construído um modelo generalista para páginas Web, que consegue alimentar os requisitos das diversas variantes destes motores de pesquisa. Foi também desenvolvido um protótipo de instanciação automático, que recolhe as informações necessárias das páginas Web e preenche o modelo.

We show that in two Higgs doublet models at tree-level the potential minimum preserving electric charge and CP symmetries, when it exists, is the global one. Furthermore, we derived a very simple condition, involving only the coefficients of the quartic terms of the potential, that guarantees spontaneous CP breaking. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. The tongue is the most important and dynamic articulator for speech formation, because of its anatomic aspects (particularly, the large volume of this muscular organ comparatively to the surrounding organs of the vocal tract) and also due to the wide range of movements and flexibility that are involved. In speech communication research, a variety of techniques have been used for measuring the three-dimensional vocal tract shapes. More recently, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) becomes common; mainly, because this technique allows the collection of a set of static and dynamic images that can represent the entire vocal tract along any orientation. Over the years, different anatomical organs of the vocal tract have been modelled; namely, 2D and 3D tongue models, using parametric or statistical modelling procedures. Our aims are to present and describe some 3D reconstructed models from MRI data, for one subject uttering sustained articulations of some typical Portuguese sounds. Thus, we present a 3D database of the tongue obtained by stack combinations with the subject articulating Portuguese vowels. This 3D knowledge of the speech organs could be very important; especially, for clinical purposes (for example, for the assessment of articulatory impairments followed by tongue surgery in speech rehabilitation), and also for a better understanding of acoustic theory in speech formation.

Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging has been used to analyse and evaluate the vocal tract shape through different techniques and with promising results in several fields. Our purpose is to demonstrate the relevance of MR and image processing for the vocal tract study. The extraction of contours of the air cavities allowed the set - up of a number of 3D reconstruction image stacks by means of the combination of orthogonally oriented sets of slices for e ach articulatory gesture, as a new approach to solve the expected spatial under sampling of the imaging process. In result these models give improved information for the visualization of morphologic and anatomical aspects and are useful for partial measure ments of the vocal tract shape in different situations. Potential use can be found in Medical and therapeutic applications as well as in acoustic articulatory speech modelling.
