The option value problem with two costs is written as a variational inequality. The advantage of this formulation is that it takes place in a fixed domain. Thus no front tracking is needed for numerical approximation of the free boundary. An iterative algorithm is proposed which can be used to solve the nonlinear system obtained by finite differences or finite elements procedures. Especial care has to be taken in the design of differences finites schemes o finite elements due to the degeneracy of the differential operator. These schemes can be absortion or convection dominated nearly to the axis. This is a preliminary note to the study of this kind of problems.

Examples of global solutions of the shell equations are presented, such as the ones based on the well known Levy series expansion. Also discussed are some natural extensions of the Levy method as well as the inherent limitations of these methods concerning the shell model assumptions, boundary conditions and geometric regularity. Finally, some open additional design questions are noted mainly related to the simultaneous use in analysis of these global techniques and the local methods (like the finite elements) to finding the optimal shell shape, and to determining the reinforcement layout.

El análisis de estructuras mediante modelos de elementos finitos representa una de las metodologías más utilizadas y aceptadas en la industria moderna. Para el análisis de estructuras tubulares de grandes dimensiones similares a las sobrestructuras de autobuses y autocares, los elementos de tipo viga son comúnmente utilizados y recomendados debido a que permiten obtener resultados satisfactorios con recursos computacionales reducidos. No obstante, los elementos de tipo viga presentan importante desventaja ya que las uniones modeladas presentan un comportamiento infinitamente rígido, esto determina un comportamiento mas rígido en las estructuras modeladas lo que se traduce en fuentes de error para las simulaciones estructurales (hasta un 60%). Mediante el modelado de uniones tubulares utilizando elementos de tipo área o volumen, se pueden obtener modelos más realistas, ya que las características topológicas de la unión propiamente dicha pueden ser reproducidas con un mayor nivel de detalle. Evitándose de esta manera los inconvenientes de los elementos de tipo viga. A pesar de esto, la modelización de estructuras tubulares de grandes dimensiones con elementos de tipo área o volumen representa una alternativa poco atractiva debido a la complejidad del proceso de modelados y al gran número de elementos resultantes lo que implica la necesidad de grandes recursos computacionales. El principal objetivo del trabajo de investigación presentado, fue el de obtener un nuevo tipo de elemento capaz de proporcionar estimaciones más exactas en el comportamiento de las uniones modeladas, al mismo tiempo manteniendo la simplicidad del procesos de modelado propio de los elementos de tipo viga regular. Con el fin de alcanzar los objetivos planteados, fueron realizadas diferentes metodologías e investigaciones. En base a las investigaciones realizadas, se obtuvo un modelo de unión viga alternativa en el cual se introdujeron un total seis elementos elásticos al nivel de la unión mediante los cuales es posible adaptar el comportamiento local de la misma. Adicionalmente, para la estimación de las rigideces correspondientes a los elementos elásticos se desarrollaron dos metodologías, una primera basada en la caracterización del comportamiento estático de uniones simples y una segunda basada en la caracterización del comportamiento dinámico a través de análisis modales. Las mejoras obtenidas mediante la implementación del modelo de unión alternativa fueron analizadas mediante simulaciones y validación experimental en una estructura tubular compleja representativa de sobrestructuras de autobuses y autocares. En base a los análisis comparativos realizados con la uniones simples modeladas y los experimentos de validación, se determinó que las uniones modeladas con elementos de tipo viga son entre un 5-60% más rígidas que uniones equivalentes modeladas con elementos área o volumen. También se determinó que las uniones área y volumen modeladas son entre un 5 a un 10% mas rígidas en comparación a uniones reales fabricadas. En los análisis realizados en la estructura tubular compleja, se obtuvieron mejoras importantes mediante la implementación del modelo de unión alternativa, las estimaciones del modelo viga se mejoraron desde un 49% hasta aproximadamente un 14%. ABSTRACT The analysis of structures with finite elements models represents one of the most utilized an accepted technique in the modern industry. For the analysis of large tubular structures similar to buses and coaches upper structures, beam type elements are utilized and recommended due to the fact that these elements provide satisfactory results at relatively reduced computational performances. However, the beam type elements have a main disadvantage determined by the fact that the modeled joints have an infinite rigid behavior, this shortcoming determines a stiffer behavior of the modeled structures which translates into error sources for the structural simulations (up to 60%). By modeling tubular junctions with shell and volume elements, more realistic models can be obtained, because the topological characteristics of the junction at the joint level can be reproduced more accurately. This way, the shortcoming that the beam type elements present can be solved. Despite this fact, modeling large tubular structures with shell or volume type elements represents an unattractive alternative due to the complexity of the modeling process and the large number of elements that result which imply the necessity of vast computational performances. The main objective of the research presented in this thesis was to develop a new beam type element that would be able to provide more accurate estimations for the local behavior of the modeled junctions at the same time maintaining the simplicity of the modeling process the regular beam type elements have. In order to reach the established objectives of the research activities, a series of different methodologies and investigations have been necessary. From these investigations an alternative beam T-junction model was obtained, in which a total of six elastic elements at the joint level were introduced, the elastic elements allowed us to adapt the local behavior of the modeled junctions. Additionally, for the estimation of the stiffness values corresponding to the elastic elements two methodologies were developed, one based on the T-junction’s static behavior and a second one based on the T-junction’s dynamic behavior by means of modal analysis. The improvements achieved throughout the implementation of this alternative T-junction model were analyzed though mechanical validation in a complex tubular structures that had a representative configuration for buses and coaches upper structures. From the comparative analyses of the finite element modeled T-junctions and mechanical experimental analysis, was determined that the beam type modeled T-junctions have a stiffer behavior compared to equivalent shell and volume modeled T-junctions with average differences ranging from 5-60% based on the profile configurations. It was also determined that the shell and volume models have a stiffer behavior compared to real T-junctions varying from 5 to 10% depending on the profile configurations. Based on the analysis of the complex tubular structure, significant improvements were obtained by the implementation of the alternative beam T-junction model, the model estimations were improved from a 49% to approximately 14%.

The study of lateral dynamics of running trains on bridges is of importance mainly for the safety of the traffic, and may be relevant for laterally compliant bridges. These studies require threedimensional coupled vehicle-bridge models, wheree consideration of wheel to rail contact is a key aspect. Furthermore, an adequate evaluation of safety of rail traffic requires nonlinear models. A nonlinear coupled model is proposed here for vehicle-structure vertical and lateral dynamics. Vehicles are considered as fully three-dimensional multibody systems including gyroscopic terms and large rotation effects. The bridge structure is modeled by means of finite elements which may be of beam, shell or continuum type and may include geometric or material nonlinearities. The track geometry includes distributed track alignment irregularities. Both subsystems (bridge and vehicles) are described with coordinates in absolute reference frames, as opposed to alternative approaches which describe the multibody system with coordinates relative to the base bridge motion. The wheelrail contact employed is a semi-Hertzian model based on realistic wheel-rail profiles. It allows a detailed geometrical description of the contact patch under each wheel including multiple-point contact, flange contact and uplift. Normal and tangential stresses in each contact are integrated at each time-step to obtain the resultant contact forces. The models have been implemented within an existing finite element analysis software with multibody capabilities, Abaqus (Simulia Ltd., 2010). Further details of the model are presented in Antolín et al. (2012). Representative applications are presented for railway vehicles under lateral wind action on laterally compliant viaducts, showing the relevance of the nonlinear wheel-rail contact model as well as the interaction between bridge and vehicle.

Esta Tesis presenta un estudio sobre el comportamiento vibroacústico de estructuras espaciales que incluyen capas de aire delgadas, así como sobre su modelización numérica. Las capas de aire pueden constituir un elemento fundamental en estos sistemas, como paneles solares plegados, que se consideran el caso de estudio en este trabajo. Para evaluar la influencia de las capas de aire en la respuesta dinámica del sistema se presenta el uso de modelos unidimensionales. La modelización de estos sistemas se estudia para los rangos de baja y alta frecuencia. En el rango de baja frecuencia se propone un conjunto de estrategias de simulación basadas en técnicas numéricas que se utilizan habitualmente en la industria aeroespacial para facilitar la aplicación de los resultados de la Tesis en los modelos numéricos actuales. Los resultados muestran el importante papel de las capas de aire en la respuesta del sistema. El uso de modelos basados en elementos finitos o de contorno para estos elementos proporciona resultados equivalentes aunque la aplicabilidad de estos últimos puede estar condicionada por la geometría del problema. Se estudia asimismo el uso del Análisis Estadístico de la Energía (SEA) para estos elementos. Una de las estrategias de simulación propuestas, que incluye una formulación energética para el aire que rodea a la estructura, se propone como estimador preliminar de la respuesta del sistema y sus frecuencias propias. Para el rango de alta frecuencia, se estudia la influencia de la definición del propio modelo SEA. Se presenta el uso de técnicas de reducción para determinar una matriz de pérdidas SEA reducida para definiciones incompletas del sistema (si algún elemento que interactúa con el resto no se incluye en el modelo). Esta nueva matriz tiene en cuenta la contribución de las subestructuras que no se consideran parte del modelo y que suelen ignorarse en el procedimiento habitual para reducir el tamaño del mismo. Esta matriz permite también analizar sistemas que incluyen algún componente con problemas de accesibilidad para medir su respuesta. Respecto a la determinación de los factores de pérdidas del sistema, se presenta una metodología que permite abordar casos en los que el método usual, el Método de Inyección de Potencia (PIM), no puede usarse. Se presenta un conjunto de métodos basados en la técnicas de optimización y de actualización de modelos para casos en los que no se puede medir la respuesta de todos los elementos del sistema y también para casos en los que no todos los elementos pueden ser excitados, abarcando un conjunto de casos más amplio que el abordable con el PIM. Para ambos rangos de frecuencia se presentan diferentes casos de análisis: modelos numéricos para validar los métodos propuestos y un panel solar plegado como caso experimental que pone de manifiesto la aplicación práctica de los métodos presentados en la Tesis. ABSTRACT This Thesis presents an study on the vibro-acoustic behaviour of spacecraft structures with thin air layers and their numerical modelling. The air layers can play a key role in these systems as solar wings in folded configuration that constitute the study case for this Thesis. A method based on one-dimensional models is presented to assess the influence of the air layers in the dynamic response of the system. The modelling of such systems is studied for low and high frequency ranges. In the low frequency range a set of modelling strategies are proposed based on numerical techniques used in the industry to facilitate the application of the results in the current numerical models. Results show the active role of the air layers in the system response and their great level of influence. The modelling of these elements by means of Finite Elements (FE) and Boundary Elements (BE) provide equivalent results although the applicability of BE models can be conditioned by the geometry of the problem. The use of Statistical Energy Analysis (SEA) for these systems is also presented. Good results on the system response are found for models involving SEA beyond the usual applicability limit. A simulation strategy, involving energetic formulation for the surrounding fluid is proposed as fast preliminary approach for the system response and the coupled eigenfrequencies. For the high frequency range, the influence of the definition of the SEA model is presented. Reduction techniques are used to determine a Reduced SEA Loss Matrix if the system definition is not complete and some elements, which interact with the rest, are not included. This new matrix takes into account the contribution of the subsystems not considered that are neglected in the usual approach for decreasing the size of the model. It also allows the analysis of systems with accessibility restrictions on some element in order to measure its response. Regarding the determination of the loss factors of a system, a methodology is presented for cases in which the usual Power Injection Method (PIM) can not be applied. A set of methods are presented for cases in which not all the subsystem responses can be measured or not all the subsystems can be excited, as solar wings in folded configuration. These methods, based on error minimising and model updating techniques can be used to calculate the system loss factors in a set of cases wider than the PIM’s. For both frequency ranges, different test problems are analysed: Numerical models are studied to validate the methods proposed; an experimental case consisting in an actual solar wing is studied on both frequency ranges to highlight the industrial application of the new methods presented in the Thesis.

Se presenta en este trabajo una investigación sobre el comportamiento de losas de hormigón armado sometidas a explosiones y la simulación numérica de dicho fenómeno mediante el método de los elementos finitos. El trabajo aborda el estudio de la respuesta de dichos elementos estructurales por comparación entre los resultados obtenidos en ensayos reales a escala 1:1 y los cálculos realizados mediante modelos de ordenador. Este procedimiento permite verificar la idoneidad, o no, de estos últimos. Se expone en primer lugar el comportamiento mecánico de los modelos de material que son susceptibles de emplearse en la simulación de estructuras mediante el software empleado en la presente investigación, así como las diferentes formas de aplicar cargas explosivas en estructuras modeladas mediante el método de los Elementos Finitos, razonándose en ambos casos la elección llevada a cabo. Posteriormente, se describen los ensayos experimentales disponibles, que tuvieron lugar en las instalaciones del Laboratorio de Balística de Efectos, perteneciente al Instituto Tecnológico de la Marañosa (ITM), de Madrid, para estudiar el comportamiento de losas de hormigón armado a escala 1:1 sometidas a explosiones reales. Se ha propuesto un método de interpretación del nivel de daño en las losas mediante el martillo de Schmidt, que posteriormente permitirá comparar resultados con los modelos de ordenador realizados. Asimismo, se propone un método analítico para la determinación del tamaño óptimo de la malla en las simulaciones realizadas, basado en la distribución de la energía interna del sistema. Es conocido que el comportamiento de los modelos pueden verse fuertemente influenciados por el mallado empleado. Según el mallado sea “grosero” o “fino” el fallo puede no alcanzarse o hacerlo de forma prematura, o excesiva, respectivamente. Es más, algunos modelos de material contemplan una “regularización” del tamaño de la malla, pero en la presente investigación se evidencia que dicho procedimiento tiene un rango de validez limitado, incluso se determina un entorno óptimo de valores. Finalmente, se han elaborado los modelos numéricos con el software comercial LS-DYNA, contemplando todos los aspectos reseñados en los párrafos anteriores, procediendo a realizar una comparación de los resultados obtenidos en las simulaciones con los procedidos en los ensayos reales a escala 1:1, observando que existe una muy buena correlación entre ambas situaciones que evidencian que el procedimiento propuesto en la investigación es de todo punto adecuado para la simulación de losas de hormigón armado sometidas a explosiones. ABSTRACT This doctoral thesis presents an investigation on the behavior of reinforced concrete slabs subjected to explosions along with the numerical simulation of this phenomenon by the finite elements method. The work involves the study of the response of these structural elements by comparing the results of field tests at full scale and the calculations performed by the computer model. This procedure allows to verify the appropriateness or not of the latter. Firstly, the mechanical behavior of the material models that are likely to be used in the modelling of structures is explained. In addition, different ways of choosing explosive charges when conducting finite element methods are analyzed and discussed. Secondly, several experimental tests, which took place at the Laboratorio de Balística de Efectos at the Instituto Tecnológico de la Marañosa (ITM), in Madrid, are described in order to study the behavior of these reinforced concrete slabs. A method for the description of the slab damage level by the Schmidt hammer is proposed, which will make possible to compare the modelling results extracted from the computation experiments. Furthermore, an analytical method for determining the optimal mesh size to be used in the simulations is proposed. It is well known that the behavior of the models can be strongly influenced by the mesh size used. According to this, when modifiying the meshing density the damaged cannot be reached or do it prematurely, or excessive, respectively. Moreover, some material models include a regularization of the mesh size, but the present investigation evidenced that this procedure has a limited range of validity, even an optimal environment values are determined. The method proposed is based on the distribution of the internal energy of the system. Finally, several expecific numerical models have been performed by using LS-DYNA commercial software, considering all the aspects listed in the preceding paragraphs. Comparisons of the results extracted from the simulations and full scale experiments were carried out, noting that there exists a very good correlation between both of them. This fact demonstrates that the proposed research procedure is highly suitable for the modelling of reinforced concrete slabs subjected to blast loading.

El hormigón estructural sigue siendo sin duda uno de los materiales más utilizados en construcción debido a su resistencia, rigidez y flexibilidad para diseñar estructuras. El cálculo de estructuras de hormigón, utilizando vigas y vigas-columna, es complejo debido a los fenómenos de acoplamiento entre esfuerzos y al comportamiento no lineal del material. Los modelos más empleados para su análisis son el de Bernoulli-Euler y el de Timoshenko, indicándose en la literatura la conveniencia de usar el segundo cuando la relación canto/luz no es pequeña o los elementos están fuertemente armados. El objetivo fundamental de esta tesis es el análisis de elementos viga y viga-columna en régimen no lineal con deformación por cortante, aplicando el concepto de Pieza Lineal Equivalente (PLE). Concepto éste que consiste básicamente en resolver el problema de una pieza en régimen no lineal, transformándolo en uno lineal equivalente, de modo que ambas piezas tengan la misma deformada y los mismos esfuerzos. Para ello, se hizo en primer lugar un estudio comparado de: las distintas propuestas que aplican la deformación por cortante, de los distintos modelos constitutivos y seccionales del hormigón estructural y de los métodos de cálculo no lineal aplicando el método de elementos finitos (MEF). Teniendo en cuenta que la resolución del problema no lineal se basa en la resolución de sucesivos problemas lineales empleando un proceso de homotopía, los problemas lineales de la viga y viga-columna de Timoshenko, se resuelven mediante MEF, utilizando soluciones nodalmente exactas (SNE) y acción repartida equivalente de cualquier orden. Se obtiene así, con muy pocos elementos finitos, una excelente aproximación de la solución, no sólo en los nodos sino en el interior de los elementos. Se introduce el concepto PLE para el análisis de una barra, de material no lineal, sometida a acciones axiales, y se extiende el mismo para el análisis no lineal de vigas y vigas-columna con deformación por cortante. Cabe señalar que para estos últimos, la solución de una pieza en régimen no lineal es igual a la de una en régimen lineal, cuyas rigideces son constantes a trozos, y donde además hay que añadir momentos y cargas puntuales ficticias en los nodos, así como, un momento distribuido ficticio en toda la pieza. Se han desarrollado dos métodos para el análisis: uno para problemas isostáticos y otro general, aplicable tanto a problemas isostáticos como hiperestáticos. El primero determina de entrada la PLE, realizándose a continuación el cálculo por MEF-SNE de dicha pieza, que ahora está en régimen lineal. El general utiliza una homotopía que transforma de manera iterativa, unas leyes constitutivas lineales en las leyes no lineales del material. Cuando se combina con el MEF, la pieza lineal equivalente y la solución del problema original quedan determinadas al final de todo el proceso. Si bien el método general es un procedimiento próximo al de Newton- Raphson, presenta sobre éste la ventaja de permitir visualizar las deformaciones de la pieza en régimen no lineal, de manera tanto cualitativa como cuantitativa, ya que es posible observar en cada paso del proceso la modificación de rigideces (a flexión y cortante) y asimismo la evolución de las acciones ficticias. Por otra parte, los resultados obtenidos comparados con los publicados en la literatura, indican que el concepto PLE ofrece una forma directa y eficiente para analizar con muy buena precisión los problemas asociados a vigas y vigas-columna en las que por su tipología los efectos del cortante no pueden ser despreciados. ABSTRACT The structural concrete clearly remains the most used material in construction due to its strength, rigidity and structural design flexibility. The calculation of concrete structures using beams and beam-column is complex as consequence of the coupling phenomena between stresses and of its nonlinear behaviour. The models most commonly used for analysis are the Bernoulli-Euler and Timoshenko. The second model is strongly recommended when the relationship thickness/span is not small or in case the elements are heavily reinforced. The main objective of this thesis is to analyse the beam and beam-column elements with shear deformation in nonlinear regime, applying the concept of Equivalent Linear Structural Element (ELSE). This concept is basically to solve the problem of a structural element in nonlinear regime, transforming it into an equivalent linear structural element, so that both elements have the same deformations and the same stresses. Firstly, a comparative study of the various proposals of applying shear deformation, of various constitutive and sectional models of structural concrete, and of the nonlinear calculation methods (using finite element methods) was carried out. Considering that the resolution of nonlinear problem is based on solving the successive linear problem, using homotopy process, the linear problem of Timoshenko beam and beam-columns is resolved by FEM, using the exact nodal solutions (ENS) and equivalent distributed load of any order. Thus, the accurate solution approximation can be obtained with very few finite elements for not only nodes, but also for inside of elements. The concept ELSE is introduced to analyse a bar of nonlinear material, subjected to axial forces. The same bar is then used for other nonlinear beam and beam-column analysis with shear deformation. It is noted that, for the last analyses, the solution of a structural element in nonlinear regime is equal to that of linear regime, in which the piecewise-stiffness is constant, the moments and fictitious point loads need to be added at nodes of each element, as well as the fictitious distributed moment on element. Two methods have been developed for analysis: one for isostatic problem and other more general, applicable for both isostatic and hiperstatic problem. The first method determines the ELSE, and then the calculation of this piece is performed by FEM-ENS that now is in linear regime. The general method uses the homotopy that transforms iteratively linear constitutive laws into nonlinear laws of material. When combined with FEM, the ELSE and the solution of the original problem are determined at the end of the whole process. The general method is well known as a procedure closed to Newton-Raphson procedure but presents an advantage that allows displaying deformations of the piece in nonlinear regime, in both qualitative and quantitative way. Since it is possible to observe the modification of stiffness (flexural and shear) in each step of process and also the evolution of the fictitious actions. Moreover, the results compared with those published in the literature indicate that the ELSE concept offers a direct and efficient way to analyze with very good accuracy the problems associated with beams and beams columns in which, by typology, the effects of shear cannot be neglected.

Para el proyecto y cálculo de estructuras metálicas, fundamentalmente pórticos y celosías de cubierta, la herramienta más comúnmente utilizada son los programas informáticos de nudos y barras. En estos programas se define la geometría y sección de las barras, cuyas características mecánicas son perfectamente conocidas, y sobre las cuales obtenemos unos resultados de cálculo concretos en cuanto a estados tensionales y de deformación. Sin embargo el otro componente del modelo, los nudos, presenta mucha mayor complejidad a la hora de establecer sus propiedades mecánicas, fundamentalmente su rigidez al giro, así como de obtener unos resultados de estados tensionales y de deformación en los mismos. Esta “ignorancia” sobre el comportamiento real de los nudos, se salva generalmente asimilando a los nudos del modelo la condición de rígidos o articulados. Si bien los programas de cálculo ofrecen la posibilidad de introducir nudos con una rigidez intermedia (nudos semirrígidos), la rigidez de cada nudo dependerá de la geometría real de la unión, lo cual, dada la gran variedad de geometrías de uniones que en cualquier proyecto se nos presentan, hace prácticamente inviable introducir los coeficientes correspondientes a cada nudo en los modelos de nudos y barras. Tanto el Eurocódigo como el CTE, establecen que cada unión tendrá asociada una curva momento-rotación característica, que deberá ser determinada por los proyectistas mediante herramientas de cálculo o procedimientos experimentales. No obstante, este es un planteamiento difícil de llevar a cabo para cada proyecto. La consecuencia de esto es, que en la práctica, se realizan extensas comprobaciones y justificaciones de cálculo para las barras de las estructuras, dejando en manos de la práctica común la solución y puesta en obra de las uniones, quedando sin justificar ni comprobar la seguridad y el comportamiento real de estas. Otro aspecto que conlleva la falta de caracterización de las uniones, es que desconocemos como afecta el comportamiento real de éstas en los estados tensionales y de deformación de las barras que acometen a ellas, dudas que con frecuencia nos asaltan, no sólo en la fase de proyecto, sino también a la hora de resolver los problemas de ejecución que inevitablemente se nos presentan en el desarrollo de las obras. El cálculo mediante el método de los elementos finitos, es una herramienta que nos permite introducir la geometría real de perfiles y uniones, y nos permite por tanto abordar el comportamiento real de las uniones, y que está condicionado por su geometría. Por ejemplo, un caso típico es el de la unión de una viga a una placa o a un soporte soldando sólo el alma. Es habitual asimilar esta unión a una articulación. Sin embargo, el modelo por elementos finitos nos ofrece su comportamiento real, que es intermedio entre articulado y empotrado, ya que se transmite un momento y el giro es menor que el del apoyo simple. No obstante, la aplicación del modelo de elementos finitos, introduciendo la geometría de todos los elementos estructurales de un entramado metálico, tampoco resulta en general viable desde un punto de vista práctico, dado que requiere invertir mucho tiempo en comparación con el aumento de precisión que obtenemos respecto a los programas de nudos y barras, mucho más rápidos en la fase de modelización de la estructura. En esta tesis se ha abordado, mediante la modelización por elementos finitos, la resolución de una serie de casos tipo representativos de las uniones más comúnmente ejecutadas en obras de edificación, como son las uniones viga-pilar, estableciendo el comportamiento de estas uniones en función de las variables que comúnmente se presentan, y que son: •Ejecución de uniones viga-pilar soldando solo por el alma (unión por el alma), o bien soldando la viga al pilar por todo su perímetro (unión total). •Disposición o no de rigidizadores en los pilares •Uso de pilares de sección 2UPN en cajón o de tipo HEB, que son los tipos de soporte utilizados en casi el 100% de los casos en edificación. Para establecer la influencia de estas variables en el comportamiento de las uniones, y su repercusión en las vigas, se ha realizado un análisis comparativo entre las variables de resultado de los casos estudiados:•Estados tensionales en vigas y uniones. •Momentos en extremo de vigas •Giros totales y relativos en nudos. •Flechas. Otro de los aspectos que nos permite analizar la casuística planteada, es la valoración, desde un punto de vista de costos de ejecución, de la realización de uniones por todo el perímetro frente a las uniones por el alma, o de la disposición o no de rigidizadores en las uniones por todo el perímetro. Los resultados a este respecto, son estrictamente desde un punto de vista económico, sin perjuicio de que la seguridad o las preferencias de los proyectistas aconsejen una solución determinada. Finalmente, un tercer aspecto que nos ha permitido abordar el estudio planteado, es la comparación de resultados que se obtienen por el método de los elementos finitos, más próximos a la realidad, ya que se tiene en cuenta los giros relativos en las uniones, frente a los resultados obtenidos con programas de nudos y barras. De esta forma, podemos seguir usando el modelo de nudos y barras, más versátil y rápido, pero conociendo cuáles son sus limitaciones, y en qué aspectos y en qué medida, debemos ponderar sus resultados. En el último apartado de la tesis se apuntan una serie de temas sobre los que sería interesante profundizar en posteriores estudios, mediante modelos de elementos finitos, con el objeto de conocer mejor el comportamiento de las uniones estructurales metálicas, en aspectos que no se pueden abordar con los programas de nudos y barras. For the project and calculation of steel structures, mainly building frames and cover lattices, the tool more commonly used are the node and bars model computer programs. In these programs we define the geometry and section of the bars, whose mechanical characteristics are perfectly known, and from which we obtain the all calculation results of stresses and displacements. Nevertheless, the other component of the model, the nodes, are much more difficulty for establishing their mechanical properties, mainly the rotation fixity coefficients, as well as the stresses and displacements. This "ignorance" about the real performance of the nodes, is commonly saved by assimilating to them the condition of fixed or articulated. Though the calculation programs offer the possibility to introducing nodes with an intermediate fixity (half-fixed nodes), the fixity of every node will depend on the real connection’s geometry, which, given the great variety of connections geometries that in a project exist, makes practically unviable to introduce the coefficients corresponding to every node in the models of nodes and bars. Both Eurocode and the CTE, establish that every connection will have a typical moment-rotation associated curve, which will have to be determined for the designers by calculation tools or experimental procedures. Nevertheless, this one is an exposition difficult to carry out for each project. The consequence of this, is that in the practice, in projects are extensive checking and calculation reports about the bars of the structures, trusting in hands of the common practice the solution and execution of the connections, resulting without justification and verification their safety and their real behaviour. Another aspect that carries the lack of the connections characterization, is that we don´t know how affects the connections real behaviour in the stresses and displacements of the bars that attack them, doubts that often assault us, not only in the project phase, but also at the moment of solving the execution problems that inevitably happen in the development of the construction works. The calculation by finite element model is a tool that allows us to introduce the real profiles and connections geometry, and allows us to know about the real behaviour of the connections, which is determined by their geometry. Typical example is a beam-plate or beam-support connection welding only by the web. It is usual to assimilate this connection to an articulation or simple support. Nevertheless, the finite element model determines its real performance, which is between articulated and fixed, since a moment is transmitted and the relative rotation is less than the articulation’s rotation. Nevertheless, the application of the finite element model, introducing the geometry of all the structural elements of a metallic structure, does not also turn out to be viable from a practical point of view, provided that it needs to invest a lot of time in comparison with the precision increase that we obtain opposite the node and bars programs, which are much more faster in the structure modelling phase. In this thesis it has been approached, by finite element modelling, the resolution of a representative type cases of the connections commonly used in works of building, since are the beam-support connections, establishing the performance of these connections depending on the variables that commonly are present, which are: •Execution of beam-support connections welding only the web, or welding the beam to the support for the whole perimeter. •Disposition of stiffeners in the supports •Use 2UPN in box section or HEB section, which are the support types used in almost 100% building cases. To establish the influence of these variables in the connections performance, and the repercussion in the beams, a comparative analyse has been made with the resulting variables of the studied cases: •Stresses states in beams and connections. •Bending moments in beam ends. •Total and relative rotations in nodes. •Deflections in beams. Another aspect that the study allows us to analyze, is the valuation, from a costs point of view, of the execution of connections for the whole perimeter opposite to the web connections, or the execution of stiffeners. The results of this analyse, are strictly from an economic point of view, without prejudice that the safety or the preferences of the designers advise a certain solution. Finally, the third aspect that the study has allowed us to approach, is the comparison of the results that are obtained by the finite element model, nearer to the real behaviour, since the relative rotations in the connections are known, opposite to the results obtained with nodes and bars programs. So that, we can use the nodes and bars models, more versatile and quick, but knowing which are its limitations, and in which aspects and measures, we must weight the results. In the last part of the tesis, are relationated some of the topics on which it would be interesting to approach in later studies, with finite elements models, in order to know better the behaviour of the structural steel connections, in aspects that cannot be approached by the nodes and bars programs.

The design of shell and spatial structures represents an important challenge even with the use of the modern computer technology.If we concentrate in the concrete shell structures many problems must be faced,such as the conceptual and structural disposition, optimal shape design, analysis, construction methods, details etc. and all these problems are interconnected among them. As an example the shape optimization requires the use of several disciplines like structural analysis, sensitivity analysis, optimization strategies and geometrical design concepts. Similar comments can be applied to other space structures such as steel trusses with single or double shape and tension structures. In relation to the analysis the Finite Element Method appears to be the most extended and versatile technique used in the practice. In the application of this method several issues arise. First the derivation of the pertinent shell theory or alternatively the degenerated 3-D solid approach should be chosen. According to the previous election the suitable FE model has to be adopted i.e. the displacement,stress or mixed formulated element. The good behavior of the shell structures under dead loads that are carried out towards the supports by mainly compressive stresses is impaired by the high imperfection sensitivity usually exhibited by these structures. This last effect is important particularly if large deformation and material nonlinearities of the shell may interact unfavorably, as can be the case for thin reinforced shells. In this respect the study of the stability of the shell represents a compulsory step in the analysis. Therefore there are currently very active fields of research such as the different descriptions of consistent nonlinear shell models given by Simo, Fox and Rifai, Mantzenmiller and Buchter and Ramm among others, the consistent formulation of efficient tangent stiffness as the one presented by Ortiz and Schweizerhof and Wringgers, with application to concrete shells exhibiting creep behavior given by Scordelis and coworkers; and finally the development of numerical techniques needed to trace the nonlinear response of the structure. The objective of this paper is concentrated in the last research aspect i.e. in the presentation of a state-of-the-art on the existing solution techniques for nonlinear analysis of structures. In this presentation the following excellent reviews on this subject will be mainly used.

El comportamiento post-rotura de los vidrios laminados es uno de los temas que están siendo investigados para explicar la capacidad de carga remanente tras la rotura de la primera lámina. En investigaciones previas se ha observado que en el caso de impacto humano en vidrios recocidos se llega a una capacidad hasta 3 veces superior, sin explicación clara del comportamiento estructural del conjunto. Para realizar un acercamiento a la resistencia a la rotura del vidrio laminado se ha planificado una campaña de ensayos de rotura con anillos concéntricos de grandes superficies en vidrio recocido, termoendurecido y templado, con dos series adicionales de vidrio recocido y termoendurecido con una capa de butiral adherida justo después del proceso de fabricación. Para realizar la comparación de las distribuciones de Weibull de las distintas tensiones de rotura se utiliza un proceso iterativo basado en la distribución real de tensiones obtenida con un modelo de elementos finitos ajustado con datos experimentales. Las comparaciones finales muestran un aumento apreciable de la resistencia (45%) en el caso de vidrios recocidos, y menor en el de los termoendurecidos (25%).The post-fracture behavior of the laminated glasses is one of the research topics that are being studied to explain the load capacity after the break of the first sheet. Previous experimental work have shown, that in case of human impact in annealed glasses, the capacity of bearing load it can be up to 3 times higher without clear explanation of the structural behavior of the plate. To make an approximation to the post-fracture resistance, a experimental program to test annealed, heat-tempered and toughened glass plates has been prepared. Two additional series of annealed and heattempered, with a layer of polyvinyl butyral adhered just after the manufacturing process, have also been incorporated. Coaxial Double Ring with large test surface areas Coaxial Double Ring with large test surface areas is the standard that has been followed. To make the comparison of Weibull's distributions of the different fracture stress, an iterative process based on the actual stress distribution obtained with a finite elements model updated with experimental results has been used. Final comparisons show a great stress improvement for the annealed glass plates (45 %), and a minor increment for the heat-tempered (25 %).

The analysis of the running safety of railway vehicles on viaducts subject to strong lateral actions such as cross winds requires coupled nonlinear vehicle-bridge interaction models, capable to study extreme events. In this paper original models developed by the authors are described, based on finite elements for the structure, multibody and finite element models for the vehicle, and specially developed interaction elements for the interface between wheel and rail. The models have been implemented within ABAQUS and have full nonlinear capabilities for the structure, the vehicle and the contact interface. An application is developed for the Ulla Viaduct, a 105 m tall arch in the Spanish high-speed railway network. The dynamic analyses allow obtaining critical wind curves, which define the running safety conditions for a given train in terms of speed of circulation and wind speed

This research in Cordoba's mosque tower main objective was to analyze and characterize the foundations and the underlying soil, calculating the stability of the monument as well as the settlement and deformations performed, using traditional calculation methods and also by finite elements, and to determine differences between both, as well as the stability factor of the Minaret Tower. The works done to study the soil, were drill bores and dynamic penetration tests, classification of samples by size, Atterberg limits, physical and chemical analysis, showing the typical geotechnical composition of the Guadalquivir valley: an alluvial material composed by sand, gravels and silt clays. To study the foundations, inclined bore samples were extracted with 10-65º, showing calcarenite stone ashlars and lime concrete alternating with stone and brick masonry.

Validating modern oceanographic theories using models produced through stereo computer vision principles has recently emerged. Space-time (4-D) models of the ocean surface may be generated by stacking a series of 3-D reconstructions independently generated for each time instant or, in a more robust manner, by simultaneously processing several snapshots coherently in a true ?4-D reconstruction.? However, the accuracy of these computer-vision-generated models is subject to the estimations of camera parameters, which may be corrupted under the influence of natural factors such as wind and vibrations. Therefore, removing the unpredictable errors of the camera parameters is necessary for an accurate reconstruction. In this paper, we propose a novel algorithm that can jointly perform a 4-D reconstruction as well as correct the camera parameter errors introduced by external factors. The technique is founded upon variational optimization methods to benefit from their numerous advantages: continuity of the estimated surface in space and time, robustness, and accuracy. The performance of the proposed algorithm is tested using synthetic data produced through computer graphics techniques, based on which the errors of the camera parameters arising from natural factors can be simulated.

One of the main concerns when conducting a dam test is the acute determination of the hydrograph for a specific flood event. The use of 2D direct rainfall hydraulic mathematical models on a finite elements mesh, combined with the efficiency of vector calculus that provides CUDA (Compute Unified Device Architecture) technology, enables nowadays the simulation of complex hydrological models without the need for terrain subbasin and transit splitting (as in HEC-HMS). Both the Spanish PNOA (National Plan of Aereal Orthophotography) Digital Terrain Model GRID with a 5 x 5 m accuracy and the CORINE GIS Land Cover (Coordination of INformation of the Environment) that allows assessment of the ground roughness, provide enough data to easily build these kind of models

En esta investigación se ha estudiado el efecto de la variación de la temperatura en la deflexión de firmes flexibles. En primer lugar se han recopilado los criterios existentes de ajuste de la deflexión por efecto de la temperatura. Posteriormente, se ha llevado a cabo un estudio empírico mediante la auscultación de las deflexiones en cinco tramos de carretera con firme flexible y con diferentes espesores de mezclas bituminosas (entre 10 y 30 cm). Las medidas se han efectuado en dos campañas (verano e invierno), tratando de abarcar un amplio rango de temperaturas. En cada campaña, se han llevado a cabo distintas auscultaciones a diferentes temperaturas. Las medidas de cada campaña se han realizado el mismo día. Se han obtenido los coeficientes empíricos de ajuste por temperatura para cada tramo analizado. Además, se ha realizado un estudio teórico mediante la elaboración de diferentes modelos (multicapa elástico lineal, multicapa visco-elástico lineal y elementos finitos) que reproducen la respuesta estructural de los firmes flexibles auscultados. La caracterización mecánica de las mezclas bituminosas se ha realizado mediante ensayos de módulo complejo en laboratorio, a diferentes temperaturas y frecuencias, sobre testigos extraídos en las carreteras estudiadas. Se han calculado los coeficientes teóricos de ajuste por temperatura para cada modelo elaborado y tramo analizado. Finalmente, se ha realizado un estudio comparativo entre los distintos coeficientes de ajuste (existentes, empíricos y teóricos), que ha puesto de manifiesto que, en todos los casos analizados, los coeficientes obtenidos en el modelo de elementos finitos son los que más se aproximan a los coeficientes empíricos (valor de referencia para los tramos analizados). El modelo desarrollado de elementos finitos permite reproducir el comportamiento visco-elástico de las mezclas bituminosas y el carácter dinámico de las cargas aplicadas. Se han utilizado elementos tipo tetraedro isoparamétrico lineal (C3D8R) para el firme y la parte superior del cimiento, mientras que para la parte inferior se han empleado elementos infinitos (CIN3D8). In this research the effect produced by the temperature change on flexible pavements deflection is analysed. First, the existing criteria of deflection adjustment by temperature were collected. Additionally, an empirical analysis was carried out, consisting on deflection tests in five flexible-pavement road sections with different asphalt mix thickness (from 10 to 30 cm). The measures were taken in two seasons (summer and winter) in an effort to register a wide range of temperatures. Different surveys were carried out at different temperatures in each season. The tests of each season were done at the same day. The empirical temperature adjustment factors for every analysed section were obtained. A theoretical study was carried out by developing different models (linear elastic multilayer, linear visco-elastic multilayer and finite elements) that reproduce the structural response of the tested flexible pavements. The mechanical characterization of the asphalt mixes was achieved through laboratory complex-modulus tests at different temperatures and frequencies, using pavement cores from the surveyed roads. The theoretical temperature adjustment factors for each model developed and each section analysed were calculated. Finally, a comparative study among the different adjustment factors (existing, empirical and theoretical) was carried out. It has shown that, in all analysed cases, the factors obtained with the finite elements model are the closest to the empirical factors (reference value for the analysed sections). The finite elements model developed makes it possible to reproduce the visco-elastic behavior of the asphalt mixes and the dynamic nature of the applied loads. Linear isoparametric tetrahedral elements (C3D8R) have been used for the pavement and the subgrade, while infinite elements (CIN3D8) have been used for the foundations.
