Testing Guide for Implementing Concrete Paving Quality Control Procedures, March 2008

Construction of portland cement concrete pavements is a complex process. A small fraction of the concrete pavements constructed in the United States over the last few decades have either failed prematurely or exhibited moderate to severe distress. In an effort to prevent future premature failures, 17 state transportation agencies pooled their resources, and a pooled fund research project, Material and Construction Optimization for Prevention of Premature Pavement Distress in PCC Pavements, was undertaken in 2003. Its purpose was to evaluate existing quality control tests, and then select and advance the state-of-the-practice of those tests most useful for optimizing concrete pavements during mix design, mix verification, and construction. This testing guide is one product of that project. The guide provides three recommended testing schemes (Levels A, B, and C, depending on a pavement’s design life and traffic volumes, etc.) that balance the costs of testing with the risk of failure for various project types. The recommended tests are all part of a comprehensive suite of tests described in detail in this guide.

Design Guide for Precast UHPC Waffle Deck Panel System, including Connections, June 2013

Abstract: As a part of an innovation project funded by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) Highways for LIFE program, a full-depth precast, ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) waffle deck panel and appropriate connections suitable for field implementation of waffle decks were developed. Following a successful full-scale validation test on a unit consisting of two panels with various types of connections under laboratory conditions, the waffle deck was installed successfully on a replacement bridge in Wapello County, Iowa. The subsequent load testing confirmed the desirable performance of the UHPC waffle deck bridge. Using the lessons from the completed project and outcomes from a series of simple and detailed finite element analyses of waffle decks, this report was developed to serve as a guide for broadening the design and installation of the UHPC waffle deck panel in new and existing bridges. Following an introduction to UHPC and waffle deck panels and a summary of completed work, this document presents information on waffle deck design, design of connections, redecking using waffle deck panels, and guidance on precast fabrication, construction, and installation of UHPC waffle deck panels.

Sign Inventory Users Guide, August 2010

This User’s Guide serves as a reference for field personnel using the sign inventory data collection software tool. This tool was developed to simplify and standardize the collection and updating of sign inventory information. The software and collection methodology was developed by the Iowa DOT Sign Management Task Force and the Center for Transportation Research and Education at Iowa State University. Required Equipment -The data collection process requires both a portable computer and a global positioning system (GPS) device (connected via USB cable). Since computer battery performance varies, a DC power converter is recommended. A check-in/out process has also been established which allows updates to sign information from the central database.
