Job protection and cash benefits are key elements of parental leave (PL) systems. We study how these two policy instruments affect return-to-work and medium-run labour market outcomes of mothers of newborn children. Analysing a series of major PL policy changes in Austria, we find that longer cash benefits lead to a significant delay in return-to-work, particularly so in the period that is job-protected. Prolonged parental leave absence induced by these policy changes does not appear to hurt mothers' labour market outcomes in the medium run. We build a non-stationary model of job search after childbirth to isolate the role of the two policy instruments. The model matches return-to-work and return to same employer profiles under the various factual policy configurations. Counterfactual policy simulations indicate that a system that combines cash with protection dominates other systems in generating time for care immediately after birth while maintaining mothers' medium-run labour market attachment.

La iniciativa ATLANTIDA engloba numerosos estudios de ingeniería con el objetivo de reformar el actual sistema de gestión del tráfico aéreo. Dentro de estos estudios se encuentran diversas investigaciones en el campo de las comunicaciones móviles. La gran variabilidad del entorno aeronáutico promueve el estudio de sistemas de comunicaciones móviles capaces de funcionar en este tipo de entorno. Este proyecto propone un sistema de comunicaciones WiMAX en un entorno aeronáutico con aviones no tripulados utilizando la modulación OFDM.

During blood banking, erythrocytes undergo storage lesions, altering or degrading their metabolism, rheological properties, and protein content. Carbonylation is a hallmark of protein oxidative lesions, thus of red blood cell oxidative stress. In order to improve global erythrocyte protein carbonylation assessment, subcellular fractionation has been established, allowing us to work on four different protein populations, namely soluble hemoglobin, hemoglobin-depleted soluble fraction, integral membrane and cytoskeleton membrane protein fractions. Carbonylation in erythrocyte-derived microparticles has also been investigated. Carbonylated proteins were derivatized with 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine (2,4-DNPH) and quantified by western blot analyses. In particular, carbonylation in the cytoskeletal membrane fraction increased remarkably between day 29 and day 43 (P<0.01). Moreover, protein carbonylation within microparticles released during storage showed a two-fold increase along the storage period (P<0.01). As a result, carbonylation of cytoplasmic and membrane protein fractions differs along storage, and the present study allows explaining two distinct steps in global erythrocyte protein carbonylation evolution during blood banking. The present work carries out an analysis about which elements of the socioaffective structure take more importance for different male team sports coaches. Data obtaining carries out by using a survey applied directly by interview. In the first part, the interviewed coaches were asked to point out the indicators of the stated structure they considered more important, using a previous selection. In the second part, using a qualitative technique, the interviewed coaches were asked to explain own strategies to work, to control or to evaluate the indicators they pointed out as important in the first part. Analysis show that most of the coaches gave great importance to this structure (80% of the values are over 4 points on a top 5 points scale), and all of them had their own strategies to deal with the structure in their sports.

Industrial clustering policy is now an integral part of economic development planning in most advanced economies. However, there have been concerns in some quarters over the ability of an industrial cluster-based development strategy to deliver its promised economic benefits and this has been increasingly been blamed on the failure by governments to identify industrial clusters. In a study published in 2001, the DTI identified clusters across the UK based on the comparative scale and significance of industrial sectors. The study identified thirteen industrial clusters in Scotland. However the clusters identified are not a homogeneous set and they seem to vary in terms of their geographic concentration within Scotland. This paper examines the spatial distribution of industries within Scotland, thereby identifying more localised clusters. The study follows as closely as possible the DTI methodology which was used to identify such concentrations of economic activity with particular attention directed towards the thirteen clusters identified by the DTI. The paper concludes with some remarks of the general problem of identifying the existence of industrial clusters.

El projecte recull el treball portat a càrrec per l’anàlisi, disseny i implementació d’una eina per l’Institut Municipal D’Hisenda de l’Ajuntament de Barcelona que compleixi les necessitats d’un sistema d’informació capaç de gestionar els expedients que genera una sèrie de tributs, les sancions que comporten així com la documentació necessària per la comunicació amb el ciutadà. Per realitzar l’aplicació s’han utilitzat tecnologies que ens permeten treballar en l’entorn web, un nucli programat en llenguatge Java sobre la plataforma MVC de Struts, tot sobre un servidor d’aplicacions WebSphere i un motor de base de dades Oracle.

En aquest projecte es presenta el desenvolupament d'un paquet d'aplicacions en l'entorn de programació matemàtica Magma, per al tractament dels codis anomenats Z2Z4-additius. Els codis Z2Z4-additius permeten representar alguns codis binaris, com a codis lineals en l'espai dels codis Z2Z4-additius. Aquest fet permetrà l'estudi de tota una sèrie de codis binaris no lineals que fins ara eren intractables.

This paper introduces a new model of trend (or underlying) inflation. In contrast to many earlier approaches, which allow for trend inflation to evolve according to a random walk, ours is a bounded model which ensures that trend inflation is constrained to lie in an interval. The bounds of this interval can either be fixed or estimated from the data. Our model also allows for a time-varying degree of persistence in the transitory component of inflation. The bounds placed on trend inflation mean that standard econometric methods for estimating linear Gaussian state space models cannot be used and we develop a posterior simulation algorithm for estimating the bounded trend inflation model. In an empirical exercise with CPI inflation we find the model to work well, yielding more sensible measures of trend inflation and forecasting better than popular alternatives such as the unobserved components stochastic volatility model.

We present a wage-hours contract designed to minimize costly turnover given investments in specific training combined with firm and worker information asymmetries. It may be optimal for the parties to work ‘long hours’ remunerated at premium rates for guaranteed overtime hours. Based on British plant and machine operatives, we test three predictions. First, trained workers with longer tenure are more likely to work overtime. Second, hourly overtime pay exceeds the value of marginal product while the basic hourly wage is less than the value of marginal product. Third, the basic hourly wage is negatively related to the overtime premium.

Vector Autoregressive Moving Average (VARMA) models have many theoretical properties which should make them popular among empirical macroeconomists. However, they are rarely used in practice due to over-parameterization concerns, difficulties in ensuring identification and computational challenges. With the growing interest in multivariate time series models of high dimension, these problems with VARMAs become even more acute, accounting for the dominance of VARs in this field. In this paper, we develop a Bayesian approach for inference in VARMAs which surmounts these problems. It jointly ensures identification and parsimony in the context of an efficient Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) algorithm. We use this approach in a macroeconomic application involving up to twelve dependent variables. We find our algorithm to work successfully and provide insights beyond those provided by VARs.

We determine he optimal combination of a universal benefit, B, and categorical benefit, C, for an economy in which individuals differ in both their ability to work - modelled as an exogenous zero quantity constraint on labour supply - and, conditional on being able to work, their productivity at work. C is targeted at those unable to work, and is conditioned in two dimensions: ex-ante an individual must be unable to work and be awarded the benefit, whilst ex-post a recipient must not subsequently work. However, the ex-ante conditionality may be imperfectly enforced due to Type I (false rejection) and Type II (false award) classification errors, whilst, in addition, the ex-post conditionality may be imperfectly enforced. If there are no classification errors - and thus no enforcement issues - it is always optimal to set C>0, whilst B=0 only if the benefit budget is sufficiently small. However, when classification errors occur, B=0 only if there are no Type I errors and the benefit budget is sufficiently small, while the conditions under which C>0 depend on the enforcement of the ex-post conditionality. We consider two discrete alternatives. Under No Enforcement C>0 only if the test administering C has some discriminatory power. In addition, social welfare is decreasing in the propensity to make each type error. However, under Full Enforcement C>0 for all levels of discriminatory power. Furthermore, whilst social welfare is decreasing in the propensity to make Type I errors, there are certain conditions under which it is increasing in the propensity to make Type II errors. This implies that there may be conditions under which it would be welfare enhancing to lower the chosen eligibility threshold - support the suggestion by Goodin (1985) to "err on the side of kindness".

This paper investigates how well-being varies with individual wage rates when individuals care about relative consumption and so there are Veblen effects – Keeping up with the Joneses – leading individuals to over-work. In the case where individuals compare themselves with their peers – those with the same wage-rate - it is shown that Keeping up with the Joneses leads some individuals to work who otherwise would have chosen not to. Moreover for these individuals well-being is a decreasing function of the wage rate - contrary to standard theory. So those who are worst-off in society are no longer those on the lowest wage.

Treball de recerca realitzat per un alumne d'ensenyament secundari i guardonat amb un Premi CIRIT per fomentar l'esperit cientí­fic del Jovent l'any 2009. La programació al servei de la matemàtica és un programa informàtic fet amb Excel i Visual Basic. Resol equacions de primer grau, equacions de segon grau, sistemes d'equacions lineals de dues equacions i dues incògnites, sistemes d'equacions lineals compatibles determinats de tres equacions i tres incògnites i troba zeros de funcions amb el teorema de Bolzano. En cadascun dels casos, representa les solucions gràficament. Per a això, en el treball s'ha hagut de treballar, en matemàtiques, amb equacions, nombres complexos, la regla de Cramer per a la resolució de sistemes, i buscar la manera de programar un mètode iteratiu pel teorema de Bolzano. En la part gràfica, s'ha resolt com fer taules de valors amb dues i tres variables i treballar amb rectes i plans. Per la part informàtica, s'ha emprat un llenguatge nou per l'alumne i, sobretot, ha calgut saber decidir on posar una determinada instrucció, ja que el fet de variar-ne la posició una sola lí­nea ho pot canviar tot. A més d'això, s'han resolt altres problemes de programació i també s'ha realitzat el disseny de pantalles.

Treball de recerca realitzat per una alumna d'ensenyament secundari i guardonat amb un Premi CIRIT per fomentar l'esperit cientí¬fic del Jovent l'any 2009. Aquest treball pretenia buscar inicialment una connexió entre Pau Claris (president de la Generalitat) i la família de l’autora, Cleris. Després d’unes primeres recerques, però, es va descartar aquesta opció ja que era massa difícil reconstruir el seu arbre geneològic. Finalment, l’objectiu va ser trobar i situar cada avantpassat en el seu marc històric. Per reconstruir l’arbre geneològic es va visitar diferents arxius: la Parròquia de Sant Cugat; l’Arxiu Nacional de Catalunya, on es van consultar llibres d’allistaments, d’impostos, padrons, registres; l’Arxiu Municipal de Sant Cugat, l’Arxiu parroquial de Tàrrega i l’Arxiu comarcal de l’Urgell on es continua la recerca per elaborar l’arbre geneològic. A través d’aquests arxius es van localitzar 6 generacions a Tàrrgea i 4 a Sant Cugat. La recerca queda tallada al 1684 en trobar l’última persona que va néixer a Tàrrega, en Josep Cleries. El seu pare, Carlos Cleries, provenia de Milà on podria continuar la recerca. En el treball també s’estudi el context històric de cada generació. Tàrrega estava contínuament presionada pels exèrcits ja que estava situada en una cruïlla entre dos camins: Lleida i Madrid. Així la recerca mostra que al 1830 la família Cleries canvià de residència per trobar millors condicions de vida. Sant Cugat també estava situada en una cruïlla de camins: Barcelona i Terrassa. Tots van viure de l’agricultura excepte el meu avi que va començar a treballar en una indústria tèxtil.
