Disaster management is one of the most relevant application fields of wireless sensor networks. In this application, the role of the sensor network usually consists of obtaining a representation or a model of a physical phenomenon spreading through the affected area. In this work we focus on forest firefighting operations, proposing three fully distributed ways for approximating the actual shape of the fire. In the simplest approach, a circular burnt area is assumed around each node that has detected the fire and the union of these circles gives the overall fire’s shape. However, as this approach makes an intensive use of the wireless sensor network resources, we have proposed to incorporate two in-network aggregation techniques, which do not require considering the complete set of fire detections. The first technique models the fire by means of a complex shape composed of multiple convex hulls representing different burning areas, while the second technique uses a set of arbitrary polygons. Performance evaluation of realistic fire models on computer simulations reveals that the method based on arbitrary polygons obtains an improvement of 20% in terms of accuracy of the fire shape approximation, reducing the overhead in-network resources to 10% in the best case.

Dragonflies demonstrate unique and superior flight performances than most of the other insect species and birds. They are equipped with two pairs of independently controlled wings granting an unmatchable flying performance and robustness. In this paper it is studied the dynamics of a dragonfly-inspired robot. The system performance is analyzed in terms of time response and robustness. The development of computational simulation based on the dynamics of the robotic dragonfly allows the test of different control algorithms. We study different movement, the dynamics and the level of dexterity in wing motion of the dragonfly. The results are positive for the construction of flying platforms that effectively mimic the kinematics and dynamics of dragonflies and potentially exhibit superior flight performance than existing flying platforms.

This paper studies periodic gaits of multi-legged locomotion systems based on dynamic models. The purpose is to determine the system performance during walking and the best set of locomotion variables. For that objective the prescribed motion of the robot is completely characterized in terms of several locomotion variables such as gait, duty factor, body height, step length, stroke pitch, foot clearance, legs link lengths, foot-hip offset, body and legs mass and cycle time. In this perspective, we formulate three performance measures of the walking robot namely, the mean absolute energy, the mean power dispersion and the mean power lost in the joint actuators per walking distance. A set of model-based experiments reveals the influence of the locomotion variables in the proposed indices.

Health promotion in hospital environments can be improved using the most recent information and communication technologies. The Internet connectivity to small sensor nodes carried by patients allows remote access to their bio-signals. To promote these features the healthcare wireless sensor networks (HWSN) are used. In these networks mobility support is a key issue in order to keep patients under realtime monitoring even when they move around. To keep sensors connected to the network, they should change their access points of attachment when patients move to a new coverage area along an infirmary. This process, called handover, is responsible for continuous network connectivity to the sensors. This paper presents a detailed performance evaluation study considering three handover mechanisms for healthcare scenarios (Hand4MAC, RSSI-based, and Backbone-based). The study was performed by simulation using several scenarios with different number of sensors and different moving velocities of sensor nodes. The results show that Hand4MAC is the best solution to guarantee almost continuous connectivity to sensor nodes with less energy consumption.

The Internet of Things (IoT) has emerged as a paradigm over the last few years as a result of the tight integration of the computing and the physical world. The requirement of remote sensing makes low-power wireless sensor networks one of the key enabling technologies of IoT. These networks encompass several challenges, especially in communication and networking, due to their inherent constraints of low-power features, deployment in harsh and lossy environments, and limited computing and storage resources. The IPv6 Routing Protocol for Low Power and Lossy Networks (RPL) [1] was proposed by the IETF ROLL (Routing Over Low-power Lossy links) working group and is currently adopted as an IETF standard in the RFC 6550 since March 2012. Although RPL greatly satisfied the requirements of low-power and lossy sensor networks, several issues remain open for improvement and specification, in particular with respect to Quality of Service (QoS) guarantees and support for mobility. In this paper, we focus mainly on the RPL routing protocol. We propose some enhancements to the standard specification in order to provide QoS guarantees for static as well as mobile LLNs. For this purpose, we propose OF-FL (Objective Function based on Fuzzy Logic), a new objective function that overcomes the limitations of the standardized objective functions that were designed for RPL by considering important link and node metrics, namely end-to-end delay, number of hops, ETX (Expected transmission count) and LQL (Link Quality Level). In addition, we present the design of Co-RPL, an extension to RPL based on the corona mechanism that supports mobility in order to overcome the problem of slow reactivity to frequent topology changes and thus providing a better quality of service mainly in dynamic networks application. In this work an adaptive modeling and spectral estimation scheme based on a dual Discrete Kalman Filtering (DKF) is proposed for speech enhancement. Both speech and noise signals are modeled by an autoregressive structure which provides an underlying time frame dependency and improves time-frequency resolution. The model parameters are arranged to obtain a combined state-space model and are also used to calculate instantaneous power spectral density estimates. The speech enhancement is performed by a dual discrete Kalman filter that simultaneously gives estimates for the models and the signals. This approach is particularly useful as a pre-processing module for parametric based speech recognition systems that rely on spectral time dependent models. The system performance has been evaluated by a set of human listeners and by spectral distances. In both cases the use of this pre-processing module has led to improved results.

Due to the importance and wide applications of the DNA analysis, there is a need to make genetic analysis more available and more affordable. As such, the aim of this PhD thesis is to optimize a colorimetric DNA biosensor based on gold nanoprobes developed in CEMOP by reducing its price and the needed volume of solution without compromising the device sensitivity and reliability, towards the point of care use. Firstly, the price of the biosensor was decreased by replacing the silicon photodetector by a low cost, solution processed TiO2 photodetector. To further reduce the photodetector price, a novel fabrication method was developed: a cost-effective inkjet printing technology that enabled to increase TiO2 surface area. Secondly, the DNA biosensor was optimized by means of microfluidics that offer advantages of miniaturization, much lower sample/reagents consumption, enhanced system performance and functionality by integrating different components. In the developed microfluidic platform, the optical path length was extended by detecting along the channel and the light was transmitted by optical fibres enabling to guide the light very close to the analysed solution. Microfluidic chip of high aspect ratio (~13), smooth and nearly vertical sidewalls was fabricated in PDMS using a SU-8 mould for patterning. The platform coupled to the gold nanoprobe assay enabled detection of Mycobacterium tuberculosis using 3 8l on DNA solution, i.e. 20 times less than in the previous state-of-the-art. Subsequently, the bio-microfluidic platform was optimized in terms of cost, electrical signal processing and sensitivity to colour variation, yielding 160% improvement of colorimetric AuNPs analysis. Planar microlenses were incorporated to converge light into the sample and then to the output fibre core increasing 6 times the signal-to-losses ratio. The optimized platform enabled detection of single nucleotide polymorphism related with obesity risk (FTO) using target DNA concentration below the limit of detection of the conventionally used microplate reader (i.e. 15 ng/μl) with 10 times lower solution volume (3 μl). The combination of the unique optical properties of gold nanoprobes with microfluidic platform resulted in sensitive and accurate sensor for single nucleotide polymorphism detection operating using small volumes of solutions and without the need for substrate functionalization or sophisticated instrumentation. Simultaneously, to enable on chip reagents mixing, a PDMS micromixer was developed and optimized for the highest efficiency, low pressure drop and short mixing length. The optimized device shows 80% of mixing efficiency at Re = 0.1 in 2.5 mm long mixer with the pressure drop of 6 Pa, satisfying requirements for the application in the microfluidic platform for DNA analysis.

RESUMO - Esta tese pretende ser um contributo para o estudo das anomalias da função visual e da sua influência no desempenho da leitura. Apresentava como objetivos: (1) Identificar a prevalência de anomalias da função visual, (2) Caracterizar o desempenho da leitura em crianças com e sem anomalias da função visual, (3) Identificar de que modo as anomalias da função visual influenciam o desempenho da leitura e (4) Identificar o impacto das variáveis que determinam o desempenho da leitura. Foi recolhida uma amostra de conveniência com 672 crianças do 1º ciclo do ensino básico de 11 Escolas do Concelho de Lisboa com idades compreendidas entre os 6 e os 11 anos (7,69±1,19), 670 encarregados de educação e 34 Professores. Para recolha de dados, foram utilizados três instrumentos: 2 questionários de perguntas fechadas, avaliação da função visual e prova de avaliação da leitura com 34 palavras. Após observadas, as crianças foram classificadas em dois grupos: função visual normal (FVN=562) e função visual alterada (FVA=110). Identificou-se uma prevalência de 16,4% de crianças com FVA. No teste de leitura, estas crianças apresentaram um menor número de palavras lidas corretamente (FVA=31,00; FVN=33,00; p<0,001) e menor precisão (FVA=91,18%; FVN=97,06%; p<0,001). Esta tendência também foi observada na comparação entre os 4 anos de escolaridade. As crianças com função visual alterada mostraram uma tendência para a omissão de letras e a confusão de grafema. Quanto à fluência (FVA=24,71; FVN=27,39; p=0,007) esta foi inferior nas crianças com FVA para todos os anos de escolaridade, exceto o 3º ano. As crianças com hipermetropia (p=0,003) e astigmatismo (p=0,019) não corrigido leram menos palavras corretamente (30,00; 31,00) e com menor precisão (88,24%; 91,18%) que as crianças sem erro refrativo significativo (32,00; 94,12%). A performance escolar classificada pelos professores foi inferior nas crianças com FVA e mais de ¼ necessitavam de medidas de apoio especial na escola. Não se verificaram diferenças significativas na performance da leitura das crianças com FVA por grupos de habilitações dos encarregados de educação. Verificou-se que o risco de ter um desempenho na leitura alterado é superior [OR=4,29; I.C.95%(2,49;7,38)] nas crianças que apresentam FVA. Relativamente ao 1º ano de escolaridade, o 2º, 3º e 4º anos apresentam um menor risco de ter um desempenho na leitura alterado. As variáveis método de ensino, habilitações dos encarregados de educação, tipo de escola (pública/privada), idade do Professor e número de anos de experiência do Professor, não foram fatores estatisticamente significativos para explicar a alteração do desempenho na leitura, quando o efeito da função visual se encontra contemplado no modelo. Um mau desempenho na leitura foi considerado nas crianças que apresentaram uma precisão inferior a 90%. Este indicador pode ser utilizado para identificar crianças em risco, que necessitam de uma observação Ortóptica/Oftalmológica para confirmação ou exclusão da existência de alterações da função visual. Este trabalho constitui um contributo para a identificação de crianças em desvantagem educacional devido a anomalias da função visual tratáveis, propondo um modelo que pretende orientar os professores na identificação de crianças que apresentem um baixo desempenho na leitura.
