This issue of the Bulletin is based on the material presented at the seminar Information Technology for Development of Small and Medium-sized Exporters in East Asia and Latin America, which was held on 23 and 24 November 2004 at the headquarters of ECLAC in Santiago, Chile. The seminar was part of the project entitled Comparative Study on East Asian and Latin American IT Industry, financed by the thematic fund for information and communication technologies (ICT) for development of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and has been carried out in close collaboration with the Institute of Developing Economies (IDE), an organization that belongs to the Japanese External Trade Organization (JETRO). This article contains a discussion of the concepts, definitions and standards associated with electronic commerce, as well as the opportunities to be seized and the challenges to be met so that MSMEs can expand their electronic business.

Este simulador é formado pela junção de técnicas de Realidade Virtual com modelos de propagação, desenvolvidos através dos estudos de rádio enlace, que descrevem a perda que o sinal transmitido sofre ao longo do percurso no ambiente. O simulador possui dois módulos. O primeiro permite a criação do ambiente virtual com o posicionamento, sobre um terreno, de prédios, árvores, carros, antenas e outras primitivas que permitem a construção de um ambiente tridimensional customizável. O segundo módulo permite a configuração dos parâmetros relacionados a propagação de sinal de antenas como a potência, a frequência, o ganho, etc., e também selecionar o modelo de propagação para a execução da simulação. Dentro deste segundo módulo, existe um submódulo responsável pelo estudo do planejamento da área de cobertura composta pelas antenas, em outras palavras, este submódulo simula a distância que cada antena no cenário consegue atingir e gera a respectiva área de cobertura. Para demonstrar a eficiência do simulador foram criados dois ambientes virtuais para testes. Um cenário representando um ambiente urbano onde empregou-se um modelo de propagação clássico, Okumura-Hata para cidades pequenas e médias, e um ambiente tridimensional arborizado utilizando um modelo especifico para simulação de propagação para regiões densamente arborizadas, desenvolvido na Universidade Federal do Pará chamado de Lyra-Castro-UFPA.

Lately, the acceptability of fermented dairy beverages has been increased, due to the nutritional benefits, the practical consumption and the low cost of product for the manufacturers, and consequently for final market price to the consumers. During the manufacturing process, these products can be susceptible to microbiological contamination. The present study investigated the contaminant microbiota in fermented dairy beverages produced by small- and medium-sized companies, by means of analyses on moulds and yeasts counting, determination of the Most Probable Number (MPN) of total and thermo tolerant coliforms, Escherichia coli and Salmonella spp. detection, and determination of pH value. In spite of the absence of Salmonella spp., a high counts of yeasts and moulds were found, and E. coli was detected in five samples (16.67 %); and the sample were classified as “products in poor sanitary conditions”, because they showed thermo-tolerant coliforms counting higher than the standard established by the legislation in force. Therefore, quality programs such as Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) should be employed to prevent any contamination risk, in order to provide safe products to consumers.

To achieve sustainable development, supply chains must become greener. In this context, the importance of green supply chain management (GSCM) increases because it can contribute to improving firms'environmental performance (EP). However, little is known about these subjects in the context of firms in the bioenergy sector (sugarcane and ethanol production in Brazil). Thus, the objective of this work is to present the results of a survey conducted on 80 micro-, small-, and medium-sized firms that are suppliers in the Brazilian bioenergy sector (sugarcane and ethanol production). These results indicate that GSCM practices strengthen the EP of firms in the sector. Therefore, this article contributes to the existing literature because it addresses the relationship between GSCM and EP in an understudied sector (sugarcane and ethanol production). Network survivability is one of the most important issues in the design of optical WDM networks. In this work we study the problem of survivable routing of a virtual topology on a physical topology with Shared Risk Link Groups (SRLG). The survivable virtual topology routing problem against single-link failures in the physical topology is proved to be NP-complete in [1]. We prove that survivable virtual topology routing problem against SRLG/node failures is also NP-complete. We present an improved integer linear programming (ILP) formulation (in comparison to [1]) for computing the survivable routing under SRLG/node failures. Using an ILP solver, we computed the survivable virtual topology routing against link and SRLG failures for small and medium sized networks efficiently. As even our improved ILP formulation becomes intractable for large networks, we present a congestion-based heuristic and a tabu search heuristic (which uses the congestion-based heuristic solution as the initial solution) for computing survivable routing of a virtual topology. Our experimental results show that tabu search heuristic coupled with the congestion based heuristic (used as initial solution) provides fast and near-optimal solutions.

La ricerca ha per oggetto la messa a punto e applicazione di un approccio metaprogettuale finalizzato alla definizione di criteri di qualità architettonica e paesaggistica nella progettazione di aziende vitivinicole medio-piccole, che effettuano la trasformazione della materia prima, prevalentemente di propria produzione. L’analisi della filiera vitivinicola, della letteratura scientifica, della normativa di settore, di esempi di “architetture del vino eccellenti” hanno esplicitato come prevalentemente vengano indagate cantine industriali ed aspetti connessi con l'innovazione tecnologica delle attrezzature. Soluzioni costruttive e tecnologiche finalizzate alla qualità architettonica ed ambientale, attuali dinamiche riguardanti il turismo enogastronomico, nuove funzionalità aziendali, problematiche legate alla sostenibilità dell’intervento risultano ancora poco esplorate, specialmente con riferimento a piccole e medie aziende vitivinicole. Assunto a riferimento il territorio ed il sistema costruito del Nuovo Circondario Imolese (areale rappresentativo per vocazione ed espressione produttiva del comparto vitivinicolo emiliano-romagnolo) è stato identificato un campione di aziende con produzioni annue non superiori ai 5000 hl. Le analisi svolte sul campione hanno permesso di determinare: modalità di aggregazione funzionale degli spazi costruiti, relazioni esistenti con il paesaggio, aspetti distributivi e materico-costruttivi, dimensioni di massima dei locali funzionali alla produzione. Il caso studio relativo alla riqualificazione di un’azienda rappresentativa del comparto è stato utilizzato per la messa a punto e sperimentazione di criteri di progettazione guidati da valutazioni relative alle prestazioni energetiche, alla qualità architettonica e alla sostenibilità ambientale, economica e paesaggistica. L'analisi costi-benefici (pur non considerando le ricadute positive in termini di benessere degli occupanti ed il guadagno della collettività in termini di danni collegati all’inquinamento che vengono evitati in architetture progettate per garantire qualità ambientale interna ed efficienza energetica) ha esplicitato il ritorno in pochi anni dell’investimento proposto, nonostante gli ancora elevati costi di materiali di qualità e dei componenti per il corretto controllo climatico delle costruzioni.
