In a closed economy context there is common agreement on price inflation stabilization being one of the objects of monetary policy. Moving to an open economy context gives rise to the coexistence of two measures of inflation: domestic inflation (DI) and consumer price inflation (CPI). Which one of the two measures should be the target variable? This is the question addressed in this paper. In particular, I use a small open economy model to show that once sticky wages indexed to past CPI inflation are introduced, a complete inward looking monetary policy is no more optimal. I first, derive a loss function from a secondorder approximation of the utility function and then, I compute the fully optimalmonetary policy under commitment. Then, I use the optimal monetary policy as a benchmark to compare the performance of different monetary policy rules. The main result is that once a positive degree of indexation is introduced in the model the rule performing better (among the Taylor type rules considered) is the one targeting wage inflation and CPI inflation. Moreover this rule delivers results very close to the one obtained under the fully optimal monetary policy with commitment.

SUMMARYInsulin secretion from pancreatic beta-cells is a fundamental condition for the maintenance of blood glucose levels. During the last decades, important components of the molecular machinery controlling hormone release have been characterized. My PhD thesis was dedicated to the study of new signaling pathways regulating insulin exocytosis and in particular to the role of small monomelic guanine triphosphatase or GTPases controlling the last events of hormone release. The first part of my thesis focused on Ras-like (Ral) RalA and RalB proteins. We investigated the mechanisms leading to activation of Ral proteins in pancreatic beta-cells and analyzed their impact on different steps of the insulin-secretory process. Our results have shown that RalA is the predominant isoform expressed in pancreatic islets and insulin-secreting cell lines. Silencing of this GTPase in INS-IE cells by RNA interference led to a decrease in secretagogue-induced hormone release. The activation of the GTPase, followed by FRET imaging, is triggered by increases in intracellular Ca and cAMP. Defective insulin release in cells lacking RalA is associated with a decrease in the secretory granules docked at the plasma membrane, detected by TIRF microscopy and with strong impairment in PLD1 activation in response to secretagogues. RalA was found to be activated by the exchange factor RalGDS, which regulates hormone secretion induced by secretagogues and the docking step of insulin-containing granules at the plasma membrane. In the second part of this work we have shown that a member of the Rab family, Rab37, is present on insulin-containing secretory granules of pancreatic beta-cells. In addition, our experiments have suggested that Rab37 is required to obtain an optimal insulin secretory response induced by secretogogues and is important for the docking step of insulin-containing granules at the plasma membrane.

Human activities in tropical forests are the main causes of forest fragmentation. According to historical factor in deforestation processes, forest remnants exhibit different sizes and shapes. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the dung beetle assemblage on fragments of different degree of sizes. Sampling was performed during rainy and dry season of 2010 in six fragments of Atlantic forest, using pitfall traps baited with excrement and carrion. Also, we used two larger fragments as control. We used General Linear Models to determine whether the fragments presented distinguished dung beetle abundance and richness. Analysis of Similarities and Non-Metric Multidimensional Scaling were used to determine whether the dung beetle assemblage was grouped according to species composition. A total of 3352 individuals were collected and 19 species were identified in the six fragments sampled. Dung beetle abundance exhibited a shift according to fragment size; however, richness did not change among fragments evaluated. Also, fragments sampled and the two controls exhibited distinct species composition. The distinction on abundance of dung beetles among fragments may be related to different amount of resource available in each one. It is likely that the dung beetle richness did not distinguish among the different fragments due to the even distribution of the mammal communities in these patches, and consequent equal dung diversity. We conclude that larger fragments encompass higher abundance of dung beetle and distinct species. However, for a clearer understanding of effects of fragmentation on dung beetles in Atlantic forest, studies evaluating narrower variations of larger fragments should be conducted.

Bronchiolitis obliterans (BO) following allogeneic haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) affects peripheral airways. Detection of BO is presently delayed by the low sensitivity of spirometry. We examined the relationship between peripheral airway function and time since HSCT, and compared it with spirometry and clinical indices in 33 clinically stable allogeneic HSCT recipients. The following measurements were performed: lung function, exhaled nitric oxide, forced oscillatory respiratory system resistance and reactance, acinar (S(acin)) and conductive airways ventilation heterogeneity and lung clearance index (LCI) measured by multiple breath nitrogen washout. 22 patients underwent repeat visits from which short-term changes were examined. Median time post HSCT was 12 months. Eight patients were clinically diagnosed as having BO. In multivariate analysis, time since HSCT was predicted by S(acin) and forced expiratory volume in 1 s % predicted. 20 patients had abnormal S(acin) with normal spirometry, whereas none had airflow obstruction with normal S(acin). S(acin) and LCI were the only measures to change significantly between two visits, with both worsening. Change in S(acin) was the only parameter to correlate with change in chronic graft-versus-host disease grade. In conclusion, peripheral airways ventilation heterogeneity worsens with time after HSCT. S(acin) may be more sensitive than spirometry in detecting BO at an early stage, which needs confirmation in a prospective study.
