We tested the hypothesis that a panel of antibodies to cell surface, cytoplasmic, and nuclear antigens could reliably distinguish the cells composing reactive germinal centers from those composing follicular lymphoma. Immunocytochemistry was performed on deparaffinized sections of methacarn-fixed lymph node and tonsil (15 cases of reactive hyperplasia and 14 cases of follicular lymphoma) using antibodies to the nerve growth factor receptor (NGFR5), bcl-2 protein (124), proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA; 19A2), and CD45RA (MT2). In 100% of cases of reactive hyperplasia, both MT2 and 124 showed positive immunostaining of mantle zone and scattered interfollicular lymphocytes, but in all cases there was a sharply demarcated absence of immunostaining of germinal center cells. However, diffuse immunostaining of follicular centers with MT2 (64%) and 124 (93%) and scattered intervening cells were seen in follicular lymphoma. The combination of antibodies to CD45RA and bcl-2 yielded positive immunostaining of follicular center cells in 93% of follicular lymphomas. The germinal center cells of reactive hyperplasia showed >75% nuclear positivity with antibodies to PCNA, in contrast to the follicular lymphoma cells, which showed variable PCNA indices ranging from 25 to >75%. A minority of follicular lymphoma cases (29%) showed PCNA indices comparable with those seen in cases of reactive hyperplasia. Antibodies to NGFR were positive in all cases of reactive hyperplasia and in 79% of cases of follicular hyperplasia, although the immunostaining intensity was generally decreased in follicular hyperplasia. In summary, antibodies to bcl-2 appear to be superior to those to CD45RA in distinguishing reactive hyperplasia from follicular lymphoma. Reactive hyperplasia cannot be discriminated from follicular hyperplasia using antibodies to PCNA or to nerve growth factor receptor.

This paper proposes a methodology to incorporate voltage/reactive representation to Short Term Generation Scheduling (STGS) models, which is based on active/reactive decoupling characteristics of power systems. In such approach STGS is decoupled in both Active (AGS) and Reactive (RGS) Generation Scheduling models. AGS model establishes an initial active generation scheduling through a traditional dispatch model. The scheduling proposed by AGS model is evaluated from the voltage/reactive points of view, through the proposed RGS model. RGS is formulated as a sequence of T nonlinear OPF problems, solved separately but taking into account load tracking between consecutive time intervals. This approach considerably reduces computational effort to perform the reactive analysis of the RGS problem as a whole. When necessary, RGS model is capable to propose active generation redispatches, such that critical reactive problems (in which all reactive variables have been insufficient to control the reactive problems) can be overcome. The formulation and solution methodology proposed are evaluated in the IEEE30 system in two case studies. These studies show that the methodology is robust enough to incorporate reactive aspects to STGS problem.

Two reactive dyes, C.I. Reactive Red 120 (RR120) and C.I. Reactive Green 19 (RG19), each bearing two azo groups as the chromophoric moiety and two monochloro-s-triazine groups as reactive groups, can be detected at nanomolar levels using cathodic stripping voltammetry. Linear calibration graphs were obtained for both reactive dyes, from 0.015 to 0.14 mu mol l(-1) for RR120 in pH 4 buffer and from 0.012 to 0.26 mu mol l(-1) for RG19 in pH 3 buffer, using a preconcentration at 0 V during 180 and 240 s on the mercury electrode, respectively. The reduction process of the azo dyes reactive red 120 and reactive green 19 was investigated in B-R buffer pH 2-12 by differential pulse polarography, cyclic voltammetry and controlled potential electrolyse. The reactive red 120 presents two azo groups reducible in a single step of 8 electrons followed by simultaneous reduction of the two clorotriazine groups. The reduction of reactive green 19 is complicated by the presence of azo groups and chlorotriazine moyeties in a non symmetrical molecule. The peaks can be monitored for dyes determination in concentration level up to 1x10(-7) mol/L and 1x10(-9) mol/L using differential pulse polarography or cathodic stripping voltammetry.

Both Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) types A and B are found in endemic Burkitt's lymphoma (BL) occurring in equatorial Africa. We studied 17 cases of Brazilian BL previously demonstrated to be EBV-positive to determine the EBV type as well as the presence of a characteristic 30 bp deletion within the 3' end of the latent membrane protein-1 (LMP-1) gene that may be important to the pathogenesis of several EBV-associated neoplasms. All case in which the age was known were children. We found type A EBV in 13 of 14 (93%) evaluable cases, and type B in one case. The LMP-1 deletion was found in 12 of 15 (80%) evaluable cases, including the one case of type B EBV, and a similar high prevalence (59%) of the deletion was detected in EBV-positive normal and reactive lymphoid tissues from individuals from the same geographic region. The high proportion of cases associated with type A EBV suggests that immunodeficiency is not an important factor in the pathogenesis of Brazilian BL, in contrast to endemic African BL. The presence of the LMP-1 deletion in a high prevalence in the normal population in this region is unexplained.

The growth of nanocrystalline Ga1-zMnxN (0.00 <= x <= 0.18) films grown by reactive RF-magnetron sputtering is focused here for the first time. The films were grown in a N-2 atmosphere by co-sputtering technique using a Ga target covered with small pieces of Mn onto c-GaAs (10 0), c-Si (10 0) and amorphous SiO2 substrates maintained at 500 K. Scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction (XRD) experiments did not show any evidence for Mn segregation within the studied composition range. EDX measurements show that the Mn concentration is increased monotonically with the fraction of the target area covered by Mn. The XRD characterization show that the films are nanocrystalline, the crystallites having mean grain sizes in the 15-19 nm range and wurtzite structure with preferential growth orientation along the c-axis direction. The lattice parameters of alpha-GaN (a and c) increase practically linearly with the increase of Mn incorporation. The changes in the structural properties of our films due to the Mn incorporation are similar to those that occur in ferromagnetic GaMnN single-crystal films. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the role of macrophage activity and antibody production in experimental infection with Leptospira Pomona in mice genetically selected for high (H) or low (L) humoral immune response. To evaluate macrophage activity, reactive oxygen and nitrogen intermediates were determined. Also, the production of tumor necrosis factor (TNF-alpha) and the recovery of Leptospira-specific antibodies in the kidneys and liver were assessed; histological lesions were analyzed using the hematoxylin-eosin technique, and Leptospira antigens in tissues were determined by immunohistochemistry. Results showed that recovery of microorganisms from the analyzed organs was lower in LIV-A mice. However, HIV-A animals showed total restraint since the 14th day after infection, whereas LIV-A mice still had bacteria in the liver at the 21st post-infection day. Immune response against Pomona serovar in those lineages was characterized as high production of antibodies, mainly in late periods of the infectious process. The production of reactive oxygen and nitrogen intermediates also contributed to the elimination of Leptospira Pomona in all two lineages; H2O2 production was an important factor in HIV-A mice, as well as NO production in the LIV-A animals, mainly at the latest post-inoculation periods. The same occurred regarding TNF-alpha production. Severe renal lesions were observed at periods in which larger numbers of leptospires were isolated using the culture technique. Tissue alterations persisted in LIV-A mice, even at periods in which leptospires were not recovered. Immunohistochemistry showed to be more sensitive than culturing. However, both techniques were appropriate for the agent identification in the studied lineages. Results suggest that such lineages could represent an important model to investigate pathogenesis and immune response against the varied serovars of leptospires.

This paper presents a comparison of reactive power support in distribution networks provided by switched Capacitor Banks (CBs) and Distributed Generators (DGs). Regarding switched CBs, a Tabu Search metaheuristic algorithm is developed to determine their optimal operation with the objective of reducing the power losses in the lines on the system, while meeting network constraints. on the other hand, the optimal operation of DGs is analyzed through an evolutionary Multi-Objective (MO) programming approach. The objectives of such approach are the minimization of power losses and operation cost of the DGs. The comparison of the reactive power support provided by switched CBs and DGs is carried out using a modified IEEE 34 bus distribution test system.

This paper evaluates emissions to the atmosphere of biologically available nitrogen compounds in a region characterized by intensive sugar cane biofuel ethanol production. Large emissions of NH(3) and NO,, as well as particulate nitrate and ammonium, occur at the harvest when the crop is burned, with the amount of nitrogen released equivalent to similar to 35% of annual fertilizer-N application. Nitrogen oxides concentrations show a positive association with fire frequency, indicating that biomass burning is a major emission source, with mean concentrations of NO, doubling in the dry season relative to the wet season. During the dry season biomass burning is a source of NH3, with other sources (wastes, soil, biogenic) predominant during the wet season. Estimated NO(2)-N, NH(3)-N, NO(3)(-)-N and NH(4)(+)-N emission fluxes from sugar cane burning in a planted area,of ca. 2.2 x 10(6) ha are 11.0, 1.1, 0.2, and 1.2 Gg N yr(-1), respectively.

C-reactive protein (CRP) is an acute phase protein whose levels are increased in many disorders. Levels greater than 3 mu g/mL serum have hitherto been considered to indicate pathology, but there is increasing interest in assessments between 0.1 and 10 mu g/mL, which have been found to correlate with severity of risk for cardiovascular disease. We report herein the generation of both antibody and Affimer based impedance immunoassays for CRP that are substantially more sensitive than clinically utilized immunonephelometry and immunoturbidity assessments. Significant in this study is not only the use of a constrained peptide to detect a clinically important target but also that derived electrochemical impedance assays can be highly sensitive even with probes whose relatively weak (mu M) affinities are not amenable to target detection by surface plasmon resonance (SPR). Key to this finding is acknowledging that receptive surfaces of comparatively low initial steric bulk and charge transfer resistance are especially primed to be highly responsive to target binding in electroanalytical assays of this type.
