Glucose-induced insulin secretion rom and Ca-45 uptake by isolated pancreatic islets, derived from rats fed with normal (NPD) or low protein diet (LPD), were studied. Insulin secretion from both types of islets in response to increasing concentrations of glucose followed an S-shaped pattern. However, basal secretion observed at substimulatory concentrations of glucose (0-5.6 mM), as well as maximal release, obtained at 16.7 mM or higher glucose concentrations were significantly reduced in islets from LPD. Furthermore, in LPD rat islets, the dose-response curve to glucose was clearly shifted to the right compared with NPD islets, with the half-maximal response occurring at 8.5 and 14.4 mM glucose for NPD and LPD islets, respectively. In islets from NPD rats, the Ca-45 content, after 5 or 90 min in the presence of 8.3 mM glucose, was higher than that observed for islets kept at 2.8 mM glucose and increased further at 16.7 mM glucose. After 5 min of incubation, the Ca-45 uptake by LPD islets in the presence of 8.3 mM glucose was slightly higher than basal values (2.8 mM glucose); however, no further increase in the Ca-45 uptake was noticed at 16.7 mM glucose. In LPD islets a significant increase in Ca-45 uptake over basal values was registered only at 16.7 mM glucose, after 90 min of incubation. These data indicate that the poor secretary response to glucose observed in islets from LPD rats may be related to a defect in the ability of glucose to increase Ca2+ uptake and/or to reduce Ca2+ efflux from beta-cells.

The sintering process of nanometric undoped SnO2 powder was studied. No macroscopic shrinkage was observed during the sintening process. Grain growth kinetics investigation showed that surface diffusion is the dominant mechanism in the temperature range 500-1300 degreesC. For temperatures higher than 1300 degreesC, high weight loss was measured, suggesting evaporation-condensation as the dominant mass-transport mechanism. Thermogravimetric analysis (TG) and mass spectroscopy studies showed that the surface contamination of the SnO2 particles by chemical species like H2O, OH- and CO2, has a strong influence on the role of mass transport controlled by surface diffusion. Teiid lizards are intesive foragers supposed to rely lagerly on chemoreception for prey detection, an ability that can be modified by previous feeding experiences. We investigated the ability of juvenile lizards, Tupinambis teguixin, in discriminate prey from non-prey odors as well as the effects of recent diet on these ability. Tegu lizards were able to discriminate prey odors and this ability probably is inate. The effect of recent diet was analysed through optimal foraging models and our results does not support in a broad sense the predictions made by theoretical models.

We studied the diet of the Barn Owl (Tyto alba) in an agricultural area of southern Brazil (29degrees36'S, 52degrees11'W), based on analysis of regurgitated remains. The results clearly showed that the diet of the Barn Owl reflects the human impact on its habitat. The cosmopolitan house mouse (Mus musculus) was the most preyed upon small mammal (81.9%) and the most important in terms of the Barn Owl ingested biomass (69%). This rodent, due to its small size, is also responsible for the relatively low me-an weight off small mammal prey in the owl diet (19.6 g). In southern Brazilian agroecosystems, the Barn Owl probably feeds mainly on mice due to their great abundance in crop fields and grain storage areas of the region.

This paper describes a simple method to co-precipitate CeO2 and Ce0.8Gd0.2O1.9-delta with ammonium hydroxide from solvents such as: water, ethylene glycol, ethyl alcohol and isopropyl alcohol. Characterization by Raman spectroscopy and XRD evidenced the formation of a solid solution of gadolinium-doped ceria at room temperature. Nanometric particles with crystallite size of 3.1 nm were obtained during synthesis using ethyl alcohol as solvent. This is a promising result compared with those mentioned in the literature, in which the smallest crystallite size reported was, 6.5 nm. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Background: It is known that amino acid oxidation is increased in tumor-bearing rat muscles and that leucine is an important ketogenic amino acid that provides energy to the skeletal muscle. Methods: To evaluate the effects of a leucine supplemented diet on the intestinal absorption alterations produced by Walker 256, growing pregnant rats were distributed into six groups. Three pregnant groups received a normal protein diet (18% protein):pregnant (N), tumor-bearing (WN), pair-fed rats (Np). Three other pregnant groups were fed a diet supplemented with 3% leucine (15% protein plus 3% leucine):leucine (L), tumor-bearing (WL) and pair-fed with leucine (Lp). Non pregnant rats (C), which received a normal protein diet, were used as a control group. After 20 days, the animals were submitted to intestinal perfusion to measure leucine, methionine and glucose absorption. Results: Tumor-bearing pregnant rats showed impairment in food intake, body weight gain and muscle protein content, which were less accentuated in WL than in WN rats. These metabolic changes led to reduction in both fetal and tumor development. Leucine absorption slightly increased in WN group. In spite of having a significant decrease in leucine and methionine absorption compared to L, the WL group has shown a higher absorption rate of methionine than WN group, probably due to the ingestion of the leucine supplemented diet inducing this amino acid uptake. Glucose absorption was reduced in both tumor-bearing groups. Conclusions: Leucine supplementation during pregnancy in tumor-bearing rats promoted high leucine absorption, increasing the availability of the amino acid for neoplasic cells and, mainly, for fetus and host utilization. This may have contributed to the better preservation of body weight gain, food intake and muscle protein observed in the supplemented rats in relation to the non-supplemented ones.

OBJECTIVE: Protein malnutrition is characterized by a number of morphologic and physiologic alterations, including intestinal mucosal atrophy and impaired nutrient absorption. Impaired absorption accentuates nutritional deficiency and accelerates body weight loss and changes in body chemistry. Because leucine is a ketogenic and oxidative amino acid and stimulates the protein synthesis, we examined the ability of young rats to recover from protein malnutrition by feeding them a control balanced or a leucine-rich diet for 60 d.METHODS: At the end of the 60-d period, body, liver, and muscle weights; glucose, methionine, and leucine intestinal absorption; and carcass chemical composition were evaluated.RESULTS: Body weight gain was higher in the control balanced and leucine-rich groups than in control rats, indicating that adequate refeeding allows body weight to recover in these groups. Methionine and glucose absorptions were impaired in malnourished rats but were restored after nutritional recovery. The leucine-rich diet resulted in an increase in carcass collagen nitrogen but maintained the carcass structural nitrogen.CONCLUSIONS: These results indicated that leucine supplementation during nutritional recovery from protein malnutrition improves protein carcass restoration. However, the precise mechanism of the leucine effects involved in this response remains to be elucidated.

Disordered and crystalline Mn-doped BaTiO3 (BTO:Mn) powders were synthesized by the polymeric precursor method. After heat treatment, the nature of visible photoluminescence (PL) at room temperature in amorphous BTO:Mn was discussed, considering results of experimental and theoretical studies. X-ray diffraction (XRD), PL, and UV-vis were used to characterize this material. Rietveld refinement of the BTO:Mn from XRD data was used to built two models, which represent the crystalline BTO:Mn (BTO:Mn,) and disordered BTO:Mn (BTO:Mn-d) structures. Theses models were analyzed by the periodic ab initio quantum mechanical calculations using the CRYSTAL98 package within the framework of density functional theory at the B3LYP level. The experimental and theoretical results indicated that PL is related with the degree of disorder in the BTO:Mn powders and also suggests the presence of localized states in the disordered structure. ZrO2 powder was coated with Al2O3 precursor generated by a polymeric precursor method in aqueous solution. The system of nanocoated particles formed a core shell-like structure in which the particle is the core and the nanocoating (additive) is the shell. A new approach is reported in order to control the superficial mass transport and the exaggerated grain growth during the sintering of zirconia powder. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observations clearly showed the formation of an alumina layer on the surface of the zirconia particles. This layer modifies the sintering process and retards the maximum shrinkage temperature of the pure zirconia.
