Zirconium phosphate has been extensively studied as a proton conductor for proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell applications. Here we report the synthesis of mesoporous, templated sol-gel zirconium phosphate for use in PEM applications in an effort to determine its suitability for use as a surface functionalised, solid acid proton conductor in the future. Mesoporous zirconium phosphates were synthesised using an acid-base pair mechanism with surface areas between 78 and 177 m(2) g(-1) and controlled pore sizes in the range of 2-4 nm. TEM characterisation confirmed the presence of a wormhole like pore structure. The conductivity of such materials was up to 4.1 x 10(-6) S cm(-1) at 22degreesC and 84% relative humidity (RH), while humidity reduction resulted in a conductivity decrease by more than an order of magnitude. High temperature testing on the samples confirmed their dependence on hydration for proton conduction and low hydroscopic nature. It was concluded that while the conductivity of these materials is low compared to Nafion, they may be a good candidate as a surface functionalised solid acid proton conductor due to their high surface area, porous structure and inherent ability to conduct protons.

Mesoporous Ni(OH)(2) was synthesized using cationic surfactant as template and urea as hydrolysis-controlling agent. Mesoporous NiO with centralized pore size distribution was obtained by calcining Ni(OH)(2) at different temperatures. The BET specific surface area reaches 477.7 m(2).g(-1) for NiO calcined at 523 K. Structure characterizations indicate the polycrystalline pore wall of mesoporous nickel oxide. The pore-formation mechanism is also deduced to be quasi-reverse micelle mechanism. Cyclic voltammetry shows the good capacitive behavior of these NiO samples due to its unique mesoporous structure when using large amount of NiO to fabricate electrode. Compared with NiO prepared by dip-coating and cathodic precipitation methods, this mesoporous NiO with controlled pore structure can be used in much larger amount to fabricate the electrode and still maintains high specific capacitance and good capacitive behavior.

Equilibrium adsorption and desorption in mesoporous adsorbents is considered on the basis of rigorous thermodynamic analysis, in which the curvature-dependent solid-fluid potential and the compressibility of the adsorbed phase are accounted for. The compressibility of the adsorbed phase is considered for the first time in the literature in the framework of a rigorous thermodynamic approach. Our model is a further development of continuum thermodynamic approaches proposed by Derjaguin and Broekhoff and de Boer, and it is based on a reference isotherm of a non-porous material having the same chemical structure as that of the pore wall. In this improved thermodynamic model, we incorporated a prescription for transforming the solid-fluid potential exerted by the flat reference surface to the potential inside cylindrical and spherical pores. We relax the assumption that the adsorbed film density is constant and equal to that of the saturated liquid. Instead, the density of the adsorbed fluid is allowed to vary over the adsorbed film thickness and is calculated by an equation of state. As a result, the model is capable to describe the adsorption-desorption reversibility in cylindrical pores having diameter less than 2 nm. The generalized thermodynamic model may be applied to the pore size characterization of mesoporous materials instead of much more time-consuming molecular approaches. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. Ordered nanoporous carbon (ONC) was comprehensively tested for the first time as electrode material in lithium-ion battery. Structure characterization shows the order nanoporous structure and tiny crystallite structure of as-synthesized ONC. The electrochemical properties of this carbon were studied by galvanostatic cycling and cyclic voltammetry. Of special interest is that ONC gave no peak on its positive sweep of the cyclic voltammetry, which was different from other known anode materials. Besides, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and XRD were also used to investigate the electrochemical characteristics of ONC. (c) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Periodic mesoporous organosilica (PMO) hollow spheres with tunable wall thickness have been successfully synthesized by a new vesicle and a liquid crystal “dual templating” mechanism, which may be applicable for drug and DNA delivery systems, biomolecular encapsulation, as well as nanoreactors for conducting biological reactions at the molecular levels.

Iodine-doped (I-doped) mesoporous titania with a bicrystalline (anatase and rutile) framework was synthesized by a two-step template hydrothermal synthesis route. I-doped titania with anatase structure was also synthesized without the use of a block copolymer as a template. The resultant titania samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared, nitrogen adsorption, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and UV-visible absorption spectroscopy. Both I-doped titania samples, with and without template, show much better photocatalytic activity than commercial P25 titania in the photodegradation of methylene blue under the irradiation of visible light (> 420 nm) and UV-visible light. Furthermore, I-doped mesoporous titania with a bicrystalline framework exhibits better activity than I-doped titania with anatase structure. The effect of rutile phase in titania on the adsorptive capacity of water and surface hydroxyl, and photocatalytic activity was investigated in detail. The excellent performance of I-doped mesoporous titania under both visible light and UV-visible light can be attributed to the combined effects of bicrystalline framework, high crystallinity, large surface area, mesoporous structure, and high visible light absorption induced by I-doping.

Various mesoporous catalysts with vanadium loadings between 0.5 and 6 V wt.% and surface areas around 1300 m(2)/g were synthesized using the isomorphous substitution (IS) and molecular designed dispersion (MDD) techniques. Their catalytic properties were tested using toluene as a model VOC in a fixed bed reactor at temperatures between 300 and 550 degrees C. It was found that during the oxidation of toluene, over V-HMS synthesized via IS, conversion of toluene mainly results in carbon oxides, benzene, benzaldehyde and water. Total conversion is greatly improved when the vanadium content is increased from around 1.5 to 3.0 wt.%, but an increase in the textural porosity (V-TEX/V-MESO) from 0.3 to 0.6 had no discernable effect on the conversion. This can be explained by the fact that a V-TEX/V-MESO as low as 0.3 is sufficient to facilitate the access of toluene into the framework confined mesopores without any molecular transport limitations. However, when using V-HMS synthesized by MDD, conversion of toluene is greatly improved when the V-TEX/ V-MESO ratio is increased from 0.1 to 0.6. This is because the diffusion limitations are minimized by this increase. V-HMS synthesized via MDD does not exhibit selectivity to benzaldehyde, favoring total oxidation to CO and CO2. This different oxidation mechanism can be explained in terms of location, accessibility and number of active species on the surface of the HMS support. (c) 2005 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
