Rhodococcus rhodochrous NCIMB13064 can dehalogenate and utilise a number of halogenated aliphatic compounds as sole carbon and energy source. Mutants of NCIMB13064 can be easily isolated with an enlarged range of 1-chloroalkane utilising ability. Dehalogenation of 1-chlorononane, 1-chlorodecane and short-chain 1-chloroalkanes (C-3-C-8) is encoded by the same plasmid pRTL1. However, a different genetic element(s) is required for the dehalogenation of 3-chloropropionic acid. Two derivatives (P200 and P400) of R. rhodochrous NCIMB13064 were isolated which had acquired the ability to utilise naphthalene as sole carbon and energy source. Both strains lost the ability to utilise short-chain 1-chloroalkanes and underwent some rearrangements associated with pRTL1 plasmid.

Cathepsins are known to have many important physiological roles and provide a viable target for inhibition. Fluorobenzoyl dipeptide derivatives were synthesized and tested for biological activity in an effort to find an efficient inhibitor of the cysteine protease cathepsin L. Thirty-six novel inhibitors (1-36) were synthesized from protected amino acids via the standard DCC/HOBt coupling protocol, containing a benzyl ester or a nitrile as an electrophilic warhead. The activity of the inhibitors was evaluated against cathepsin L and IC50 values calculated. Modification of both amino acids and terminal groups afforded compounds with single digit micromolar inhibition. Results utilizing the benzoyl-L-leucine-glycine nitrile backbone are comparable to that for the commercially available inhibitor 39.

Prior studies of the comparative performance of greenfields and acquisitions have advanced competing arguments, with some arguing that greenfields should outperform acquisitions because acquisitions are costlier to integrate, and others that acquisitions should outperform greenfields because greenfields suffer from a liability of newness. Moreover, while the costs of integration and the liability of newness are at their greatest during a subsidiary's first years, prior studies have tested their competing arguments on samples containing older subsidiaries. We extend these prior studies by (1) developing an institutional theory-based framework that simultaneously considers the costs of integration and the liability of newness, (2) recognizing that both types of costs vary with the level of subsidiary integration, and (3) focusing on the stage of their life during which subsidiaries predominantly incur these costs. To measure subsidiary performance, we ask managers of Dutch multinationals how their ex ante performance expectations compare to the subsidiary's ex post performance during its first two years. Analysing a sample of 191 foreign subsidiaries and controlling for entry mode self-selection and other factors, we find that acquisitions outperform greenfields at low and intermediate levels of subsidiary integration, but that greenfields outperform acquisitions at higher integration levels. In this paper, we report the synthesis and biological activity of a series of dihydroisocoumarin analogues Conjugated with fatty acids, alcohols, or amines, of varying hydrocarbon chain length and degree of unsaturation, to (he dihydroisocoumarins, kigelin and mellein, at the C-7 and C-8 positions on the core dihydroisocoumarin structure. These compounds were evaluated for their antiproliferative activity against human breast cancer (MCF-7 and MDA-MB-468) and melanoma cells (SK-MEL-28 and Malme-3M) using the 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl-2H-tetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay. Two compounds Conjugated with gamma-linolenyl alcohol (18:3 n-6) demonstrated potent antiproliferative activity in vitro with one of these 4-hydroxy-3-oxo-1.3-dihydro-isobenzofuran-5-carboxylic acid octadeca-6,9,12-trienyl ester, demonstrating significant antitumor activity in vivo ill a number of human tumor xenograft models.

This study highlights the potential associated with utilising multi-component polymeric gels to formulate materials that possess unique rheological and mechanical properties. The synergistic effect* and interaction between hydroxyethylcellulose (HEC) and sodium carboxymethylcellulose (NaCMC), polymers which are commonly employed as drug delivery platforms for implantable medical devices (1), have been determined using dynamic, continuous shear and texture profile analysis. * The difference between the actual response of a binary mixture and the sum of the two components comprising the mixture Increases in polymer concentration resulted in an increase in G', G? and ?' whereas tan d decreased. Similarly, significant increases were also apparent in continuous shear and texture analysis. All binary mixtures showed positive synergy values which may suggest associative interaction between the two components.
