MFCC coefficients extracted from the power spectral density of speech as a whole, seems to have become the de facto standard in the area of speaker recognition, as demonstrated by its use in almost all systems submitted to the 2013 Speaker Recognition Evaluation (SRE) in Mobile Environment [1], thus relegating to background this component of the recognition systems. However, in this article we will show that selecting the adequate speaker characterization system is as important as the selection of the classifier. To accomplish this we will compare the recognition rates achieved by different recognition systems that relies on the same classifier (GMM-UBM) but connected with different feature extraction systems (based on both classical and biometric parameters). As a result we will show that a gender dependent biometric parameterization with a simple recognition system based on GMM- UBM paradigm provides very competitive or even better recognition rates when compared to more complex classification systems based on classical features

This paper summarizes the experience and the lessons learned from the European project PERFORM (A sophisticated multi-parametric system FOR the continuous effective assessment and monitoring of motor status in Parkinson's disease and other neurodegenerative diseases). PERFORM is aimed to provide a telehealth system for the remote monitoring of Parkinson's disease patients (PD) at their homes. This paper explains the global experience with PERFORM. It summarizes the technical performance of the system and the feedback received from the patients in terms of usability and wearability.

La cuestión principal abordada en esta tesis doctoral es la mejora de los sistemas biométricos de reconocimiento de personas a partir de la voz, proponiendo el uso de una nueva parametrización, que hemos denominado parametrización biométrica extendida dependiente de género (GDEBP en sus siglas en inglés). No se propone una ruptura completa respecto a los parámetros clásicos sino una nueva forma de utilizarlos y complementarlos. En concreto, proponemos el uso de parámetros diferentes dependiendo del género del locutor, ya que como es bien sabido, la voz masculina y femenina presentan características diferentes que deberán modelarse, por tanto, de diferente manera. Además complementamos los parámetros clásicos utilizados (MFFC extraídos de la señal de voz), con un nuevo conjunto de parámetros extraídos a partir de la deconstrucción de la señal de voz en sus componentes de fuente glótica (más relacionada con el proceso y órganos de fonación y por tanto con características físicas del locutor) y de tracto vocal (más relacionada con la articulación acústica y por tanto con el mensaje emitido). Para verificar la validez de esta propuesta se plantean diversos escenarios, utilizando diferentes bases de datos, para validar que la GDEBP permite generar una descripción más precisa de los locutores que los parámetros MFCC clásicos independientes del género. En concreto se plantean diferentes escenarios de identificación sobre texto restringido y texto independiente utilizando las bases de datos de HESPERIA y ALBAYZIN. El trabajo también se completa con la participación en dos competiciones internacionales de reconocimiento de locutor, NIST SRE (2010 y 2012) y MOBIO 2013. En el primer caso debido a la naturaleza de las bases de datos utilizadas se obtuvieron resultados cercanos al estado del arte, mientras que en el segundo de los casos el sistema presentado obtuvo la mejor tasa de reconocimiento para locutores femeninos. A pesar de que el objetivo principal de esta tesis no es el estudio de sistemas de clasificación, sí ha sido necesario analizar el rendimiento de diferentes sistemas de clasificación, para ver el rendimiento de la parametrización propuesta. En concreto, se ha abordado el uso de sistemas de reconocimiento basados en el paradigma GMM-UBM, supervectores e i-vectors. Los resultados que se presentan confirman que la utilización de características que permitan describir los locutores de manera más precisa es en cierto modo más importante que la elección del sistema de clasificación utilizado por el sistema. En este sentido la parametrización propuesta supone un paso adelante en la mejora de los sistemas de reconocimiento biométrico de personas por la voz, ya que incluso con sistemas de clasificación relativamente simples se consiguen tasas de reconocimiento realmente competitivas. ABSTRACT The main question addressed in this thesis is the improvement of automatic speaker recognition systems, by the introduction of a new front-end module that we have called Gender Dependent Extended Biometric Parameterisation (GDEBP). This front-end do not constitute a complete break with respect to classical parameterisation techniques used in speaker recognition but a new way to obtain these parameters while introducing some complementary ones. Specifically, we propose a gender-dependent parameterisation, since as it is well known male and female voices have different characteristic, and therefore the use of different parameters to model these distinguishing characteristics should provide a better characterisation of speakers. Additionally, we propose the introduction of a new set of biometric parameters extracted from the components which result from the deconstruction of the voice into its glottal source estimate (close related to the phonation process and the involved organs, and therefore the physical characteristics of the speaker) and vocal tract estimate (close related to acoustic articulation and therefore to the spoken message). These biometric parameters constitute a complement to the classical MFCC extracted from the power spectral density of speech as a whole. In order to check the validity of this proposal we establish different practical scenarios, using different databases, so we can conclude that a GDEBP generates a more accurate description of speakers than classical approaches based on gender-independent MFCC. Specifically, we propose scenarios based on text-constrain and text-independent test using HESPERIA and ALBAYZIN databases. This work is also completed with the participation in two international speaker recognition evaluations: NIST SRE (2010 and 2012) and MOBIO 2013, with diverse results. In the first case, due to the nature of the NIST databases, we obtain results closed to state-of-the-art although confirming our hypothesis, whereas in the MOBIO SRE we obtain the best simple system performance for female speakers. Although the study of classification systems is beyond the scope of this thesis, we found it necessary to analise the performance of different classification systems, in order to verify the effect of them on the propose parameterisation. In particular, we have addressed the use of speaker recognition systems based on the GMM-UBM paradigm, supervectors and i-vectors. The presented results confirm that the selection of a set of parameters that allows for a more accurate description of the speakers is as important as the selection of the classification method used by the biometric system. In this sense, the proposed parameterisation constitutes a step forward in improving speaker recognition systems, since even when using relatively simple classification systems, really competitive recognition rates are achieved.

This paper addresses the problem of optimal constant continuous low-thrust transfer in the context of the restricted two-body problem (R2BP). Using the Pontryagin’s principle, the problem is formulated as a two point boundary value problem (TPBVP) for a Hamiltonian system. Lie transforms obtained through the Deprit method allow us to obtain the canonical mapping of the phase flow as a series in terms of the order of magnitude of the thrust applied. The reachable set of states starting from a given initial condition using optimal control policy is obtained analytically. In addition, a particular optimal transfer can be computed as the solution of a non-linear algebraic equation. The objective of this dissertation is to analyze, design, and implement an activity module for a larger educational platform with the use of gamification techniques with the purpose to improve learning, pass rates, and feedback. The project investigates how to better incentivize student learning. A software requirement specification was delineated to establish the system guidelines and behavior. Following, a definition of the activities in the module was created. This definition encompassed a detailed description of each activity, together with elements that compose it, available customizations and the involved formulas. The activity high-level design process includes the design of the defined activities by use of the software methodology UWE (UML-based Web Engineering) for their future implementation, modeling requirements, content, navigation and presentation. The low-level design is composed of the database schema and types and the relating EER (Enhanced Entity-Relationship) diagram. After this, the implementation of the designed module began, together with testing in the later stages. We expect that by using the implemented activity module, students will become more interested in learning, as well as more engaged in the process, resulting in a continuous progress during the course.---RESUMEN---El objetivo de este trabajo es analizar, diseñar e implementar un módulo de actividades didácticas que formará parte de una plataforma educativa, haciendo uso de técnicas de gamificación con la finalidad de mejorar el aprendizaje, ratio de aprobados y retroalimentación para los alumnos. El proyecto investiga como incentivar mejor el aprendizaje estudiantil. Se trazó una especificación de requisitos de software para establecer las pautas del sistema y su comportamiento. A continuación, se definieron las actividades del módulo. Esta definición abarca una descripción detallada de cada actividad, junto a los elementos que la componen, las configuraciones disponibles y las formulas involucradas. El proceso de diseño de alto nivel incluye el diseño de las actividades definidas usando la metodología de software UWE (UML-based Web Engineering) para su futura implementación, requisitos de modelaje, contenido, navegación y presentación. El diseño de bajo nivel está compuesto por el esquema y tipos de la base de datos y el diagrama de entidad-relación correspondiente. Tras esto se realizó la implementación y pruebas de parte del sistema. Se espera que usando el módulo de actividades implementado, los estudiantes muestren un mayor interés por aprender, así como estar más involucrados en el proceso, resultando en un progreso más continuo durante el curso.

The deployment of the Ambient Intelligence (AmI) paradigm requires designing and integrating user-centered smart environments to assist people in their daily life activities. This research paper details an integration and validation of multiple heterogeneous sensors with hybrid reasoners that support decision making in order to monitor personal and environmental data at a smart home in a private way. The results innovate on knowledge-based platforms, distributed sensors, connected objects, accessibility and authentication methods to promote independent living for elderly people. TALISMAN+, the AmI framework deployed, integrates four subsystems in the smart home: (i) a mobile biomedical telemonitoring platform to provide elderly patients with continuous disease management; (ii) an integration middleware that allows context capture from heterogeneous sensors to program environment¿s reaction; (iii) a vision system for intelligent monitoring of daily activities in the home; and (iv) an ontologies-based integrated reasoning platform to trigger local actions and manage private information in the smart home. The framework was integrated in two real running environments, the UPM Accessible Digital Home and MetalTIC house, and successfully validated by five experts in home care, elderly people and personal autonomy.

There are significant levels of concern about the relevance and the difficulty of learning some issues on Strength of Materials and Structural Analysis. Most students of Continuum Mechanics and Structural Analysis in Civil Engineering usually point out some key learning aspects as especially difficult for acquiring specific skills. These key concepts entail comprehension difficulties but ease access and applicability to structural analysis in more advanced subjects. Likewise, some elusive but basic structural concepts, such as flexibility, stiffness or influence lines, are paramount for developing further skills required for advanced structural design: tall buildings, arch-type structures as well as bridges. As new curricular itineraries are currently being implemented, it appears appropriate to devise a repository of interactive web-based applications for training in those basic concepts. That will hopefully train the student to understand the complexity of such concepts, to develop intuitive knowledge on actual structural response and to improve their preparation for exams. In this work, a web-based learning assistant system for influence lines on continuous beams is presented. It consists of a collection of interactive user-friendly applications accessible via Web. It is performed in both Spanish and English languages. Rather than a “black box” system, the procedure involves open interaction with the student, who can simulate and virtually envisage the structural response. Thus, the student is enabled to set the geometric, topologic and mechanic layout of a continuous beam and to change or shift the loading and the support conditions. Simultaneously, the changes in the beam response prompt on the screen, so that the effects of the several issues involved in structural analysis become apparent. The system is performed through a set of web pages which encompasses interactive exercises and problems, written in JavaScript under JQuery and DyGraphs frameworks, given that their efficiency and graphic capabilities are renowned. Students can freely boost their self-study on this subject in order to face their exams more confidently. The continuous increment of processors computational power and the requirements on additional functionality and services are motivating a change in the way embedded systems are built. Components with different criticality level are allocated in the same processor, which give rise to mixed-criticality systems. The use of partitioned systems is a way of preventing undesirable interferences between components with different criticality level. An hypervisor provides these partitions or virtual machines, ensuring spatial, temporal and fault isolation between them. The purpose of this paper is to illustrate the development of a mixed-critical system. The attitude control subsystem is used for showing the different steps, which are supported by a toolset developed in the context of the MultiPARTES research project.

By using perfusions and bolus administration, coupled with postembedding immunocytochemical procedures, we have identified the structures involved in the transport of derivatized orosomucoid (α1-acidic glycoprotein) across the continuous microvascular endothelium of the murine myocardium. Our findings indicate that: (i) monomeric orosomucoid binds to the luminal surface of the endothelium; (ii) it is restricted to caveolae during its transport across the endothelium; (iii) it is detected in the perivascular spaces at early time points (by 1 min) and in larger quantities at later time points (>5 min) from the beginning of its perfusion or its intravascular administration; (iv) no orosomucoid molecules are found in the intercellular junctions or at the abluminal exits of interendothelial spaces; and (v) the vesicular transport of orosomucoid is strongly inhibited by N-ethylmaleimide (>80%). Because, by size and shape, the orosomucoid qualifies as a preferential probe for the postulated small pore system, our results are discussed in relation to the pore theory of capillary permeability.

This project analyzes the challenges, issues, benefits, and lessons learned that several companies experienced while implementing integrated management systems. Based on previous experiences, this paper defines several strategies that an organization should use to increase the probability of implementing an integrated management system (IMS) successfully. Strategies include completing a feasibility analysis, creating a policy, allocating resources, developing objectives, modifying documentation, and creating a continuous monitoring process. Moreover, an organization can reduce potential obstacles by promoting a culture that encourages management commitment and employee participation. Results indicate the implementation of an IMS provides the framework to manage environmental, health, and safety programs effectively. By implementing an IMS, an organization can save time and money, as well as proactively control risk.

The selective production of 2-methyltetrahydrofuran from levulinic acid has been effectively conducted using designed Cu based catalysts and compared with a commercial Pd/C system under microwave irradiation. Optimised conditions for the most active catalysts Cu-MINT (>90% conversion, 75% selectivity to MTHF) and Pd/C (78% conversion, 92% selectivity to MTHF) were further translated into a continuous flow process using the proposed catalysts to find out the deactivation of Cu-MINT under flow conditions (79 vs. 13% conversion with a switch in selectivity to products after 30 min in flow), the high stability of Pd/C (73 vs. 70% conversion at stable selectivity under analogous conditions to those of Cu-MINT) but, most importantly, different relevant pathways to valuable products from levulinic acid depending on the type of catalyst employed.

The understanding of the continental carbon budget is essential to predict future climate change. In order to quantify CO₂ and CH₄ fluxes at the regional scale, a measurement system was installed at the former radio tower in Beromünster as part of the Swiss greenhouse gas monitoring network (CarboCount CH). We have been measuring the mixing ratios of CO₂, CH₄ and CO on this tower with sample inlets at 12.5, 44.6, 71.5, 131.6 and 212.5 m above ground level using a cavity ring down spectroscopy (CRDS) analyzer. The first 2-year (December 2012–December 2014) continuous atmospheric record was analyzed for seasonal and diurnal variations and interspecies correlations. In addition, storage fluxes were calculated from the hourly profiles along the tower. The atmospheric growth rates from 2013 to 2014 determined from this 2-year data set were 1.78 ppm yr⁻¹, 9.66 ppb yr⁻¹ and and -1.27 ppb yr⁻¹ for CO₂, CH₄ and CO, respectively. After detrending, clear seasonal cycles were detected for CO₂ and CO, whereas CH₄ showed a stable baseline suggesting a net balance between sources and sinks over the course of the year. CO and CO₂ were strongly correlated (r² > 0.75) in winter (DJF), but almost uncorrelated in summer. In winter, anthropogenic emissions dominate the biospheric CO₂ fluxes and the variations in mixing ratios are large due to reduced vertical mixing. The diurnal variations of all species showed distinct cycles in spring and summer, with the lowest sampling level showing the most pronounced diurnal amplitudes. The storage flux estimates exhibited reasonable diurnal shapes for CO₂, but underestimated the strength of the surface sinks during daytime. This seems plausible, keeping in mind that we were only able to calculate the storage fluxes along the profile of the tower but not the flux into or out of this profile, since no Eddy covariance flux measurements were taken at the top of the tower.

Solar nebula processes led to a depletion of volatile elements in different chondrite groups when compared to the bulk chemical composition of the solar system deduced from the Sun's photosphere. For moderately-volatile elements, this depletion primarily correlates with the element condensation temperature and is possibly caused by incomplete condensation from a hot solar nebula, evaporative loss from the precursor dust, and/or inherited from the interstellar medium. Element concentrations and interelement ratios of volatile elements do not provide a clear picture about responsible mechanisms. Here, the abundance and stable isotope composition of the moderately- to highly-volatile element Se are investigated in carbonaceous, ordinary, and enstatite chondrites to constrain the mechanism responsible for the depletion of volatile elements in planetary bodies of the inner solar system and to define a δ(82/78)Se value for the bulk solar system. The δ(82/78)Se of the studied chondrite falls are identical within their measurement uncertainties with a mean of −0.20±0.26‰ (2 s.d., n=14n=14, relative to NIST SRM 3149) despite Se abundance depletions of up to a factor of 2.5 with respect to the CI group. The absence of resolvable Se isotope fractionation rules out a kinetic Rayleigh-type incomplete condensation of Se from the hot solar nebula or partial kinetic evaporative loss on the precursor material and/or the parent bodies. The Se depletion, if acquired during partial condensation or evaporative loss, therefore must have occurred under near equilibrium conditions to prevent measurable isotope fractionation. Alternatively, the depletion and cooling of the nebula could have occurred simultaneously due to the continuous removal of gas and fine particles by the solar wind accompanied by the quantitative condensation of elements from the pre-depleted gas. In this scenario the condensation of elements does not require equilibrium conditions to avoid isotope fractionation. The results further suggest that the processes causing the high variability of Se concentrations and depletions in ordinary and enstatite chondrites did not involve any measurable isotope fractionation. Different degrees of element depletions and isotope fractionations of the moderately-volatile elements Zn, S, and Se in ordinary and enstatite chondrites indicate that their volatility is controlled by the thermal stabilities of their host phases and not by the condensation temperature under canonical nebular conditions.
