The weathering rate of rocks and chemical dynamics of the Corumbatai River basin, São Paulo State, Brazil, were evaluated using major elements as natural tracers. This basin has serious environmental problems in terms of quality of surface and rainwater, which affect the determination of weathering rate. The Corumbatai River, downstream from Rio Claro City, receives several elements/compounds through anthropogenic activities, with only K, SO42- and alkalinity yielding positive flux values. The negative flux of some anions/cations can be attributed to atmospheric loading mainly related to anthropogenic inputs, providing K a value of 16.7 ton/km(-2)a(-1) for the material removed by weathering in the Corumbatai River basin. This is equivalent to 26 x 10(6) kg of rock being removed each year by the Corumbatai River. The instantaneous flux was found to be a function of discharge, with the majority of dry residue (dissolved load) being transported during the summer (wet) months. The removed material in Corumbatai River basin derives mainly from two sub-basins (Cabegas River and Passa Cinco River), where the sandstones weather more easily than siltstones and claystones in the basin. Systematic studies in manganites of spinel structure have been undertaken. We report on the magnetic properties of two particular cases, in which one of the transition metals, Mg2+ is non-magnetic (NiMgxMn2-xO4) or presents a stable oxidation state, Cu2+ (CoxCuyMnzO4, x + y + z = 3). The magnetic behaviour is described with respect to varying contents of cobalt, copper or manganese. A ferrimagnetic transition is observed at 110-120 K, which depends on the cobalt content. Presence of copper increases the coercive field by a factor of ten with respect to the parent compound NiMn2O4. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In this work we present results of X-ray diffraction using powder method, on natural alexandrite samples from Minas Gerais State (Brazil), as a function of a sequence of annealing. From these measurements we determine lattice parameters before (a = 9.405 Angstrom, b = 5.471 Angstrom, c = 4.409 Angstrom) and after annealing, and its structure is confirmed as orthorhombic. Measurements done after an annealing of 15 minutes at 700 degreesC and for 5 hours at 1000 degreesC indicate the migration of atoms present in the sample through different phases, which were also identified by Microprobe Analysis (WDS). However we have verified that such migration does not modify the structure. X-ray diffraction measurements have been carried out in conjunction with optical absorption in the UV-Vis as a function of annealing. (C) 2002 International Centre for Diffraction Data.

Reaction of LaX3(THF)(n) (X = Cl, 1) with two equiv. of K(Tp(Me2)) gave good yields of the bis-Tp complexes [La(Tp(Me2))(2)X] (X = Cl (1); I (3)). However, the formation of 1 and 3 is always accompanied by significant amounts of La(Tp(Me2))(2)(kappa(2)-pz(Me2)) ([pz(Me2)](-) = 3,5-dimethyl-pyrazolato) (2). The pyrazolato complex 2, which presumably arises from decomposition of the [Tp(Me2)](-) moiety during salt metathesis, was independently prepared in good yield from 1 and in situ generated [pz(Me2)](-). The solid-state structures of 1 and 2 were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies. Subsequent reactions of halogeno-Tp(Me2) complexes 1 and 3 with various alkali metal salts MR (M = Li, R = CH2SiMe3, Ph, N(SiMe3)(2); M = K, R = OAr) gave M(Tp(Me2)) as the major product. Alternatively, the mono-Tp bis(aryloxide) derivatives [Ln(Tp(Me2))(OC6H2-2,6-'Bu-4-Me)(2)] (Ln = La (4); Nd (5)) were obtained in high yields by salt metathesis of [Ln(OC6H2-2,6-'Bu-4-Me)(3)] with one equiv. of K(Tp(Me2)). The species of the sandy plains forests (forests of the ''restingas'') have not yet had their spatial patterns studied as aids to the understanding of the diversity found in the different physiognomies along the Brazilian coast. In this paper a 10 x 10 m quadrat framework laid in a hectare of a tree dominant forest in the sandy plains of the Picinguaba area of the Serra do Mar State Park (municipality of Ubatuba, state of São Paulo, Brazil) was used to assess the spatial pattern of distribution for the ten most important species : Pera glabrata, Euterpe edulis, Eugenia brasiliensis, Alchornea triplinervea, Guatteria australis, Myrcia racemosa, Jacaranda semiserrata, Guarea macrophylla, Euplassa cantareirae and Nectandra oppositifolia. The spatial patterns were inferred through the calculations of their T-Square Index (C) and Dispersal Distance Index (I). P. glabrata shows a random pattern, E. edulis aggregate, E. brasiliensis, A. triplinervia, G. australis, E. cantareirae and N. oppositifolia with a tendency between aggregate and uniform and, M. racemosa, J. semiserrata and G. macrophylla between aggregate and random. Although the indexes are dependent of the sample size and of the technique adjustments, the relationship of the pattern with the environmental factors is shown by clustering methods. The results give confirmation of how the spatial patterns bring associations between populations and shape of the vegetation physiognomy.

By close control of experimental variables affecting precipitation, solid-state compounds of the type Th(OH)(m)L4-m.nH(2)O, where L stands for 4-methoxy-benzylidenepyruvate, cinnamylidenepyruvate or 4-dimethylaminocinnamylidene-pyruvate; m=0 to 3 and n=0.5-3 were isolated. Chemical analysis, TG, DTG, DSC and X-ray powder diffractometry have been employed to characterize and to study the thermal behavior of these compounds in dynamic air atmosphere. In all cases, hydration water is slowly lost between 30 and 160degreesC; a continuous, slow rate, mass loss is observed thereafter and beyond 280-400degreesC the rate of decomposition/oxidation increased rapidly, to give ThO2 as the final product, beginning at 412-510degreesC. The results associated with the hydroxo-compounds indicate that the loss of constitution water (OH ions) and the decomposition / oxidation of the organic moieties occur as simultaneous process.

Material from a new titanosaur from the Bauru Basin (Bauru Group), Brazil is described and compared with well-known titanosaurs. Adamantisaurus mezzalirai gen. et sp. nov. is based on six articulated anterior caudal vertebrae and two haemapophyses collected from the Adamantina Formation, which is considered to be Campanian-Maastrichtian? in age. Adamantisaurus mezzalirai is characterized by the following combination of characteristics: anterior caudal vertebrae with straight or slightly backwardly-projecting neural spines with strongly expanded distal ends, stout prespinal lamina, very wide pre- and postzygapophyseal articular facets, and concave postzygapophyseal articular facets on anterior caudal vertebrae. Although our cladistic analysis has produced equivocal results, Adamantisaurus mezzalirai shares with DGM 'Series B' (Peiropolis titanosaur) and Aeolosaurus the presence of postzygapophyses with concave articular facets, and shares with DGM 'Series B' the presence of laterally expanded neural spines and stout prespinal lamina. Additionally, A. mezzalirai shares with DGM 'Series' C (other titanosaur from Peiropolis) the presence of short neural spines.

Thermogravimetry, Differential Scanning Calorimetry and other analytical techniques (Energy Dispersive X-ray Analysis; Scanning Electron Microscopy; Mapping Surface; X-ray Diffraction; Inductively Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectroscopy and Cold Vapor Generation Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy) have been used to study the reaction of mercury with platinum foils. The results suggest that, when heated, the electrodeposited Hg film reacts with Pt to form intermetallic compounds each having a different stability, indicated by at least three mass loss steps. Intermetallic compounds such as PtHg4, PtHg and PtHg2 were characterized by XRD. These intermetallic compounds were the main products formed on the surface of the samples after partial removal of bulk mercury via thermal desorption. The Pt(Hg) solid solution formation caused great surface instability, attributed to the atomic size factor between Hg and Pt, facilitating the acid solution's attack to the surface.

The vagus is clearly of primary importance in the regulation of reptilian cardiorespiratory systems. Vagal control of pulmonary blood flow and cardiac shunts provides reptiles with an additional means of regulating arterial oxygen levels that is not present in endothermic vertebrates (birds and mammals). Within a given species, there exists a clear correlation between withdrawal of vagal tone on the cardiovascular system and elevated metabolic rate. Undisturbed and resting reptiles are normally characterised by high vagal tone, low pulmonary blood flow and large right-left (R-L) cardiac shunts. The low oxygen levels that result from the large R-L shunt may serve to regulate metabolism. However, when metabolism is increased by temperature, exercise or digestion, the R-L cardiac shunt is reduced, which serves to increase oxygen delivery. This response is partially elicit ed by reduction of vagal tone. Interspecies comparisons reveal a similar pattern. Thus, species that are able to sustain the highest metabolic rates possess the highest degree of anatomical ventricular separation and, therefore, less cardiac shunting. It is interesting to note that when cardiac shunts occur in mammals, due for example to developmental defects, they are associated with reduced maximal metabolic rates and impaired exercise tolerance. It appears, therefore, that full separation of ventricular blood flows was a prerequisite for the evolution of high aerobic metabolic rates and exercise stamina in mammals and birds.

Vitreous samples were prepared in the (100 2 x) NaPO3-x WO3 (0 <= x <= 70) glass forming system using conventional melting-quenching methods. The structural evolution of the vitreous network was monitored as a function of composition by thermal analysis, Raman spectroscopy and high resolution one- and two-dimensional P-31 solid state NMR. Addition of WO3 to the NaPO3 glass melt leads to a pronounced increase in the glass transition temperatures, suggesting a significant increase in network connectivity. At the same time Raman spectra indicate that up to about 30 mol% WO3 the tungsten atoms are linked to some non-bridging oxygen atoms (W-O- or W=O bonded species), suggesting that the network modifier sodium oxide is shared to some extent between both network formers. W-O- W bond formation occurs only at WO3 contents exceeding 30 mol%. P-31 magic angle spinning (MAS)-NMR spectra, supported by two-dimensional J-resolved spectroscopy, allow a clear distinction between species having two, one, and zero P-O-P linkages. The possible formation of some anionic tungsten sites suggested from the Raman data implies an average increase in the degree of polymerization for the phosphorus species, which would result in diminished P-31/Na-23 interactions. This prediction is indeed confirmed by P-31{Na-23} and Na-23{P-31} rotational echo double resonance (REDOR) NMR results, which indicate that successive addition of WO3 to NaPO3 glass significantly diminishes the strength of phosphorus-sodium dipole-dipole couplings.

1. Maximal lactate steady state (MLSS) corresponds to the highest blood lactate concentration (MLSSc) and workload (MLSSw) that can be maintained over time without continual blood lactate accumulation and is considered an important marker of endurance exercise capacity. The present study was undertaken to determine MLSSw and MLSSc in running mice. In addition, we provide an exercise training protocol for mice based on MLSSw.2. Maximal lactate steady state was determined by blood sampling during multiple sessions of constant-load exercise varying from 9 to 21 m/min in adult male C57BL/6J mice. The constant-load test lasted at least 21 min. The blood lactate concentration was analysed at rest and then at 7 min intervals during exercise.3. The MLSSw was found to be 15.1 +/- 0.7 m/min and corresponded to 60 +/- 2% of maximal speed achieved during the incremental exercise testing. Intra- and interobserver variability of MLSSc showed reproducible findings. Exercise training was performed at MLSSw over a period of 8 weeks for 1 h/day and 5 days/week. Exercise training led to resting bradycardia (21%) and increased running performance (28%). of interest, the MLSSw of trained mice was significantly higher than that in sedentary littermates (19.0 +/- 0.5 vs 14.2 +/- 0.5 m/min; P = 0.05), whereas MLSSc remained unchanged (3.0 mmol/L).4. Altogether, we provide a valid and reliable protocol to improve endurance exercise capacity in mice performed at highest workload with predominant aerobic metabolism based on MLSS assessment.
