We combine environmental magnetism, geochemical measurements and colour reflectance to study two late Quaternary sediment cores: GeoB 4905-4 at 2° 30 N off Cameroon and GeoB 4906-3 at 0° 44 N off Gabon. This area is suitable for investigating precipitation changes over Central and West Africa because of its potential to record input of aeolian and fluvial sediments. Three magnetozones representing low and high degree of alteration of the primary rock magnetic signals were identified. The magnetic signature is dominated by fine-grained magnetite, while residual haematite prevails in the reduced intervals, showing increase in concentration and fine grain size at wet intervals. Our records also show millennial-scale changes in climate during the last glacial and interglacial cycles. At the northern location, the past 5.5 ka are marked by high-frequency oscillations of Ti and colour reflectance, which suggests aeolian input and hence aridity. The southern location remains under the influence of the Intertropical Convergence Zone and thus did not register aeolian signals. The millennial-scale climatic signals indicate that drier and/or colder conditions persisted during the late Holocene and are synchronous with the 900 a climatic cycles observed in Northern Hemisphere ice core records.

Snow height was measured by the Snow Depth Buoy 2015S18, an autonomous platform, drifting on Antarctic sea ice, deployed during POLARSTERN cruise ANT-XXX/2 (PS89). The resulting time series describes the evolution of snow depth as a function of place and time between 2015-01-03 and 2015-01-18 in sample intervals of 1 hour. The Snow Depth Buoy consists of four independent sonar measurements representing the area (approx. 10 m**2) around the buoy. The buoy was installed on first year ice. In addition to snow depth, geographic position (GPS), barometric pressure, air temperature, and ice surface temperature were measured. Negative values of snow depth occur if surface ablation continues into the sea ice. Thus, these measurements describe the position of the sea ice surface relative to the original snow-ice interface. Differences between single sensors indicate small-scale variability of the snow pack around the buoy. The data set has been processed, including the removal of obvious inconsistencies (missing values). Records without any snow depth may still be used for sea ice drift analyses.

Vertical permeability testing was conducted on four samples collected from Site 1109, a borehole advanced during Ocean Drilling Program Leg 180. Closed conditions were applied during each test, and the samples were measured using a constant flow approach and permeant solutions that matched the geochemistry of nearby interstitial waters. Vertical permeabilities measured at 34.5 kPa effective stress generally decreased with depth and ranged from 10**-14 m**2 at 212.53 meters below seafloor (mbsf) to 10**-18 m**2 at 698.10 mbsf. The three deepest samples differed in permeability by less than one order of magnitude. Reconsolidation testing on the shallowest sample yielded a minimum permeability of 1.56 x 10**-16 m**2 at 276 kPa effective stress. Subsequent rebound testing yielded a hysteresis-type curve, with the final permeability measuring lower than the initial permeability by nearly 1.5 orders of magnitude. Dilution experiments indicated that use of a permeant solution matching the geochemistry of the interstitial waters may be necessary for accuracy in measurements and mitigation of clay swellage and collapse during testing, but further research is mandated.

Glacier thickness is an important factor in the course of glacier retreat in a warming climate. Thiese study data presents the results (point data) of GPR surveys on 66 Austrian mountain glaciers carried out between 1995 and 2014. The glacier areas range from 0.001 to 18.4 km**2, and their ice thickness has been surveyed with an average density of 36 points/km**2 . The glacier areas and surface elevations refer to the second Austrian glacier inventory (mapped between 1996 and 2002). According to the glacier state recorded in the second glacier inventory, the 64 glaciers cover an area of 223.3±3.6 km**3. Maps of glacier thickness have been calculated by Fischer and Kuhn (2013) with a mean thickness of 50±3 m and contain an glacier volume of 11.9±1.1 km**3. The mean maximum ice thickness is 119±5 m. The ice thickness measurements have been carried out with the transmitter of Narod and Clarke (1994) combined with restively loaded dipole antennas (Wu and King, 1965; Rose and Vickers, 1974) at central wavelengths of 6.5 (30 m antenna length) and 4.0 MHz (50 m antenna length). The signal was recorded trace by trace with an oscilloscope. 168 m/µs as used by Haeberli et al. (1982), Bauder (2001), and Narod and Clarke (1994), the signal velocity in air is assumed to be 300 m/µs. Details on the method can be are found in Fischer and Kuhn (2013), as well as Span et al.
