We would like to add a comment on another important contribution of Arthur Keithto the Weld of herniology, that is, the original and accuratedescription of the inguinal “shutter” mechanism, a remarkableanatomic action against development of an inguinal hernia. [...] Today, virtual reality surgicalsimulation models allowing three-dimensional (3D) visualizationof the human inguinal anatomy can be used as a complementary tool to assess dynamics of the inguinal area. In fact, using simulations with the Wnite elementmethod we have recently confirmed the physiological “shutter” mechanism already described almost 100 years ago. This manual captures the experience of practitioners in the Iowa Department of Transportation’s (Iowa DOT’s) Office of Location and Environment (OLE). It also documents the need for coordinated project development efforts during the highway project planning, or location study phase and engineering design. The location study phase establishes: * The definition of, and need for, the highway improvement project * The range of alternatives and many key attributes of the project’s design * The recommended alternative, its impacts, and the agreed-to conditions for project approval The location study process involves developing engineering alternatives, collecting engineering and environmental data, and completing design refinements to accomplish functional designs. The items above also embody the basic content required for projects compliant with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) of 19691, which directs federal agencies to use a systematic, interdisciplinary approach during the planning process whenever proposed actions (or “projects”) have the potential for environmental impacts. In doing so, NEPA requires coordination with stakeholders, review, comment, and public disclosure. Are location studies and environmental studies more about the process or the documents? If properly conducted, they concern both—unbiased and reasonable processes with quality and timely documents. In essence, every project is a story that needs to be told. Engineering and environmental regulations and guidance, as documented in this manual, will help project staff and managers become better storytellers.

A previous study sponsored by the Smart Work Zone Deployment Initiative, “Feasibility of Visualization and Simulation Applications to Improve Work Zone Safety and Mobility,” demonstrated the feasibility of combining readily available, inexpensive software programs, such as SketchUp and Google Earth, with standard two-dimensional civil engineering design programs, such as MicroStation, to create animations of construction work zones. The animations reflect changes in work zone configurations as the project progresses, representing an opportunity to visually present complex information to drivers, construction workers, agency personnel, and the general public. The purpose of this study is to continue the work from the previous study to determine the added value and resource demands created by including more complex data, specifically traffic volume, movement, and vehicle type. This report describes the changes that were made to the simulation, including incorporating additional data and converting the simulation from a desktop application to a web application.

For most people, highway engineering, design and right of way acquisition are not of immediate concern. However, when you own or rent property that will be affected by highway construction, you begin to consider road building from a different and personal viewpoint. Right of way is the land on which highways are built. The amount of land needed depends on the engineering standards that must be met for the type of highway that will be built or improved. This booklet will acquaint property owners, tenants and the public with the procedures the Iowa Department of Transportation follows in acquiring right of way for a highway. It is not a source of technical definitions or legal advice. Further, it is not intended to establish a legal standard.

The use of lightweight aggregates in prestressed concrete is becoming more of a reality as our design criteria become more demanding. Bridge girders of greater lengths have been restricted from travel on many of our highways because the weight of the combined girders and transporting vehicle is excessive making hauls of any distance prohibitive. This, along with new safety recommendations, prompted the State of Iowa to investigate the use of lightweight aggregate bridge girders. A series of three projects was started to investigate the possibility of using lightweight aggregate in prestressed concrete. The object of this project is to study the effect which lightweight aggregate concrete has on the camber of bridge girders when used in a field situation.

Laparoscopic surgery has become a standard approach for many interventions, including oncologic surgery. Laparoscopic instruments have been developed to allow advanced surgical procedure. Imaging and computer assistance in virtual reality or robotic procedure will certainly improve access to this surgery.

In this paper we present the ViRVIG Institute, a recently created institution that joins two well-known research groups: MOVING in Barcelona, and GGG in Girona. Our main research topics are Virtual Reality devices and interaction techniques, complex data models, realistic materials and lighting, geometry processing, and medical image visualization. We briefly introduce the history of both research groups and present some representative projects. Finally, we sketch our lines for future research

The Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) is responsible for approximately 4,100 bridges and structures that are a part of the state’s primary highway system, which includes the Interstate, US, and Iowa highway routes. A pilot study was conducted for six bridges in two Iowa river basins—the Cedar River Basin and the South Skunk River Basin—to develop a methodology to evaluate their vulnerability to climate change and extreme weather. The six bridges had been either closed or severely stressed by record streamflow within the past seven years. An innovative methodology was developed to generate streamflow scenarios given climate change projections. The methodology selected appropriate rainfall projection data to feed into a streamflow model that generated continuous peak annual streamflow series for 1960 through 2100, which were used as input to PeakFQ to estimate return intervals for floods. The methodology evaluated the plausibility of rainfall projections and credibility of streamflow simulation while remaining consistent with U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) protocol for estimating the return interval for floods. The results were conveyed in an innovative graph that combined historical and scenario-based design metrics for use in bridge vulnerability analysis and engineering design. The pilot results determined the annual peak streamflow response to climate change likely will be basin-size dependent, four of the six pilot study bridges would be exposed to increased frequency of extreme streamflow and would have higher frequency of overtopping, the proposed design for replacing the Interstate 35 bridges over the South Skunk River south of Ames, Iowa is resilient to climate change, and some Iowa DOT bridge design policies could be reviewed to consider incorporating climate change information.

With this application, the College Creek sub-watershed in Ames represents both regional collaboration and locally directed action to improve an Iowa watershed. Already completed watershed assessment identified more than 4000 tons/yr of sediment delivered from within the Ames city limits due to degraded stream conditions. The water quality enhancement goal of this project is reducing sediment delivery specifically from unstable streambanks and degrading stream channels on College Creek, one of 4 Ames tributaries to Squaw Creek. The project will also redirect urban storm water runoff into engineered infiltration systems, intercepting it from storm drains entering College Creek. This application builds on storm water runoff demonstration projects and research already funded in the College Creek sub-watershed by EPA Region 7 and Iowa DNR. Public outreach, one of the key elements of this project, is built into every phase from engineering design feedback to construction. Innovative neighborhood learning circles are utilized to educate residents and share public feedback with project engineers to ensure that project elements are both technically appropriate and socially acceptable. All practices proposed in this project -stream stabilization, storm water infiltration, and neighborhood learning circle techniques-have already been successfully demonstrated in the College Creek sub-watershed by the City of Ames in partnership with Iowa State University.

Immersive virtual reality (IVR) typically generates the illusion in participants that they are in the displayed virtual scene where they can experience and interact in events as if they were really happening. Teleoperator (TO) systems place people at a remote physical destination embodied as a robotic device, and where typically participants have the sensation of being at the destination, with the ability to interact with entities there. In this paper, we show how to combine IVR and TO to allow a new class of application. The participant in the IVR is represented in the destination by a physical robot (TO) and simultaneously the remote place and entities within it are represented to the participant in the IVR. Hence, the IVR participant has a normal virtual reality experience, but where his or her actions and behaviour control the remote robot and can therefore have physical consequences. Here, we show how such a system can be deployed to allow a human and a rat to operate together, but the human interacting with the rat on a human scale, and the rat interacting with the human on the rat scale. The human is represented in a rat arena by a small robot that is slaved to the human"s movements, whereas the tracked rat is represented to the human in the virtual reality by a humanoid avatar. We describe the system and also a study that was designed to test whether humans can successfully play a game with the rat. The results show that the system functioned well and that the humans were able to interact with the rat to fulfil the tasks of the game. This system opens up the possibility of new applications in the life sciences involving participant observation of and interaction with animals but at human scale.

Previous work has reported that it is not difficult to give people the illusion of ownership over an artificial body, providing a powerful tool for the investigation of the neural and cognitive mechanisms underlying body perception and self consciousness. We present an experimental study that uses immersive virtual reality (IVR) focused on identifying the perceptual building blocks of this illusion. We systematically manipulated visuotactile and visual sensorimotor contingencies, visual perspective, and the appearance of the virtual body in order to assess their relative role and mutual interaction. Consistent results from subjective reports and physiological measures showed that a first person perspective over a fake humanoid body is essential for eliciting a body ownership illusion. We found that the illusion of ownership can be generated when the virtual body has a realistic skin tone and spatially substitutes the real body seen from a first person perspective. In this case there is no need for an additional contribution of congruent visuotactile or sensorimotor cues. Additionally, we found that the processing of incongruent perceptual cues can be modulated by the level of the illusion: when the illusion is strong, incongruent cues are not experienced as incorrect. Participants exposed to asynchronous visuotactile stimulation can experience the ownership illusion and perceive touch as originating from an object seen to contact the virtual body. Analogously, when the level of realism of the virtual body is not high enough and/or when there is no spatial overlap between the two bodies, then the contribution of congruent multisensory and/or sensorimotor cues is required for evoking the illusion. On the basis of these results and inspired by findings from neurophysiological recordings in the monkey, we propose a model that accounts for many of the results reported in the literature.

Tämä diplomityö on tehty osana HumanICT-projektia, jonka tavoitteena on kehittää uusi, virtuaalitekniikoita hyödyntävä, työkoneiden käyttäjäliityntöjen suunnittelumenetelmä. Työn tarkoituksena oli kehittää VTT:n Tuotteet ja tuotanto tutkimusyksikköön kuluvan Ihminen-kone-turvallisuus ryhmän nykyistä virtuaalitodellisuuslaboratoriota siten, että sitä voidaan käyttää työkoneiden suunnittelussa sekä monipuolisissa ergonomiatarkasteluissa. Itse ympäristön kehittäminen pitää sisällään uuden ohjainjärjestelmän suunnittelun sekä sen implementoinnin nykyisin käytössä olevaan virtuaaliympäristöön. Perinteisesti ohjaamosimulaattorit ovat olleet sovelluskohteisiin räätälöityjä, joten ne ovat kalliita ja niiden konfiguroinnin muuttaminen on vaikeaa, joskus jopa mahdotonta. Tämän työntarkoituksena oli kehittää PC-tietokoneeseen ja yleiseen käyttöjärjestelmään perustuva ohjainjärjestelmä, joka on nopeasti kytkettävissä erilaisiin virtuaaliympäristön sovelluksiin, kuten ohjaamomalleihin. Työssä tarkasteltiin myös tapoja mallintaa fysikaalisia ilmiöitä reaaliaikasovelluksissa, eli on-line simuloinnissa. Tämän tarkastelun perusteella etsittiin ja valittiin jatkokäsittelyyn ohjelmistoja, joiden reaaliaikaisen dynamiikan simulointialgoritmitolivat kaikkein kehittyneimpiä ja monipuolisia.

Tämä diplomityö on tehty ohjeeksi väyläsuunnittelijoille, tiehankkeiden suunnittelussa tehtävään ympäristön tilan selvittämiseen sekä ympäristövaikutusten arviointiin.Työn toimeksiantajana on Tieliikelaitoksen Konsultoinnin Suunnittelupalvelut. Tutkimusongelmaa lähestyttiin selvittämällä aikaisemmin suunnittelussa käytettyjätyöskentelytapoja ja -menetelmiä sekä tarkastelemalla aiemmin tehtyjä tiensuunnittelun asiakirjoja. Selvitys keskittyi Tieliikelaitoksen ja sitä edeltäneen Tielaitoksen toimintaan, mutta työssä tarkasteltiin myös muiden asiantuntijoiden laatimia suunnitelmia. Työn lähtökohtana oli laatia ohje, jonkaavulla suunnittelijat voivat tehdä suunnitelmaan kuuluvan ympäristötiedon käsittelyn itsenäisesti. Hankkeissa, joissa näin toimitaan, oletetaan ympäristövaikutusten jäävän melko vähäisiksi eikä niissä vaadita YVA-lain mukaista menettelyä. Laaditun ohjeen myötä eri suunnittelijoiden laatimat tiehankkeiden suunnitelmat yhtenäistyvät ympäristötiedon käsittelyn osalta, sillä aiemmin yhtenäistä käytäntöä ei ole ollut. Suunnitelmien laatu paranee ja ympäristövaikutusten arviointi helpottuu samaan ohjeeseen kootun tiedon avulla. Ohjeen aikaansaaman suunnittelutoiminnan kehittyminen näkyy vasta, kun ohjetta on sovellettukäytännössä hankkeiden suunnitteluun.

The study shows that social anxiety and persecutory ideation share many of the same predictive factors. Non-clinical paranoia may be a type of anxious fear. However, perceptual anomalies are a distinct predictor of paranoia. In the context of an individual feeling anxious, the occurrence of odd internal feelings in social situations may lead to delusional ideas through a sense of" things not seeming right". The study illustrates the approach of focusing on experiences such as paranoid thinking rather than diagnoses such as schizophrenia.
