When infected with Trypanosoma cruzi, Beagle dogs develop symptoms similar to those of Chagas disease in human beings, and could be an important experimental model for a better understanding of the immunopathogenic mechanisms involved in chronic chagasic infection. This study evaluates IL-10, IFN-gamma and TNF-alpha production in the sera, culture supernatant, heart and cervical lymph nodes and their correlation with cardiomegaly, cardiac inflammation and fibrosis in Beagle dogs infected with T. cruzi. Pathological analysis showed severe splenomegaly, lymphadenopathy and myocarditis in all infected dogs during the acute phase of the disease, with cardiomegaly, inflammation and fibrosis observed in 83% of the animals infected by T. cruzi during the chronic phase. The data indicate that infected animals producing IL-10 in the heart during the chronic phase and showing high IL-10 production in the culture supernatant and serum during the acute phase had lower cardiac alterations (myocarditis, fibrosis and cardiomegaly) than those with high IFN-gamma and TNF-alpha levels. These animals produced low IL-10 levels in the culture supernatant and serum during the acute phase and did not produce IL-10 in the heart during the chronic phase of the disease. Our findings showed that Beagle dogs are a good model for studying the immunopathogenic mechanism of Chagas disease, since they reproduce the clinical and immunological findings described in chagasic patients. The data suggest that the development of the chronic cardiac form of the disease is related to a strong Th1 response during the acute phase of the disease, while the development of the indeterminate form results from a blend of Th1 and Th2 responses soon after infection, suggesting that the acute phase immune response is important for the genesis of chronic cardiac lesions. The key to successful long-term management of diabetes in cats is individualization of advice to suit cat and owner. A relationship based on trust and cooperation between veterinarian and client leads invariably to the most satisfactory outcome. Success requires knowledge of the options for monitoring diabetic cats, selection and adaptation of appropriate techniques for each individual case, and provision of ongoing support and guidance for owners. The ongoing treatment of a diabetic cat can be one of the more rewarding experiences of feline practice, and many diabetic cats and their owners come to occupy a special place within the clinic environment. This chapter provides a comprehensive overview of the current options for monitoring diabetes in cats and guidelines for application of the techniques to clinical cases.

This study verified the effect of unilateral teeth extraction on the periodontal ligament in gerbils (Meriones unguiculatus). Ten adult male gerbils weighing about 50 g had induced occlusal alterations by upper left molar extractions while the other ten animals, only submitted to surgical stress, were considered as controls. The periodontal ligament was characterized by qualitative and quantitative analysis, histological description and histomorphometric quantification. Significant alterations were observed on the left side of the experimental group (P < 0.05), the hypofunctional region, when it was compared with the contralateral side and the corresponding region of the control group. Two months after occlusal alterations induced by unilateral teeth extraction, atrophic histological alterations and a decrease in the periodontal space on the ipsilateral side characterized the periodontal ligament. In this study it was possible to conclude that the gerbil can be used in experimental models attempting to correlate the periodontium`s biological response to various mechanical stresses, as the periodontal ligament was shown to be highly sensitive to occlusal alterations.

The anatomosurgical segmentation of the arteries of the spleen was studied in 31 deer of the species Mazama gouazoubira and Blastocerus dichotomus by means of vascular injection with latex and vinyl acetate and radiographic examination. The arteria lienalis penetrated through the hilus lienis in 87% of the cases, whereas an extrahilar artery was present in the other cases. An extraparenchymal division of the lineal artery into two, three or four segmental arteries was observed in 74% of the cases. Anastomoses between intraparenchymal arterial branches were rare and of a reduced calibre.

Objective To report the biometric values and ultrasonographic aspects of the normal eye of the Striped owl (Rhinoptynx clamator). Sample population Twenty-seven healthy, free-living, adult Striped owls from the Ecological Park of Tiete Veterinary Ambulatory (Sao Paulo, Brazil). Procedures Both eyes of all owls underwent B-mode ultrasonographic examination and biometry was performed for lens axial length (WL), depth of the anterior (AC) and vitreous (VC) chambers, axial length of the globe (LB) and the pecten oculi (LP) of both eyes, using a 12 MHz probe. The owls were manually restrained without sedation and the eyes were topically anesthetized. Results Biometric and statistical findings were as follows: in the left eye, the means and standard deviations were: LB = 23.76 +/- 0.92 mm, WL = 7.79 +/- 0.27 mm, AC = 4.27 +/- 0.47 mm, VC = 11.36 +/- 0.29 mm and LP = 5.69 +/- 0.50 mm; in the right eye, the values were: LB = 24.25 +/- 0.79 mm, WL = 8.03 +/- 0.40 mm, AC = 4.56 +/- 0.52 mm, VC = 11.40 +/- 0.25 mm, and LP = 5.68 +/- 0.41 mm. No significant differences were found between left and right eyes measurements of LB, WL, AC, VC, and LP dimensions. Conclusions Ocular ultrasound aspects and biometric values of the Striped owl are reported. The study`s results provide means for various ocular measurements. The ultrasound is an easy and safe exam to be performed in the Striped owl`s eyes.
