Nitrate contamination of groundwater arises from anthropogenic activities, such as, fertilizer and animal manure applications and infiltration of wastewater/leachates. During migration of wastewater and leachates, the vadose zone (zone residing above the groundwater table), is considered to facilitate microbial denitrification. Particle voids in vadose zone are deficient in dissolved oxygen as the voids are partially filled by water and the remainder by air. Discontinuities in liquid phase would also restrict oxygen diffusion and therefore facilitate denitrification in the vadose/unsaturated soil zone. The degree of saturation of soil specimen (S (r)) quantifies the relative volume of voids filled with air and water. Unsaturated specimens have S (r) values ranging between 0 and 100 %. Earlier studies from naturally occurring nitrate losses in groundwater aquifers in Mulbagal town, Kolar District, Karnataka, showed that the sub-surface soils composed of residually derived sandy soil; hence, natural sand was chosen in the laboratory denitrification experiments. With a view to understand the role of vadose zone in denitrification process, experiments are performed with unsaturated sand specimens (S (r) = 73-90 %) whose pore water was spiked with nitrate and ethanol solutions. Experimental results revealed 73 % S (r) specimen facilitates nitrate reduction to 45 mg/L in relatively short durations of 5.5-7.5 h using the available natural organic matter (0.41 % on mass basis of sand); consequently, ethanol addition did not impact rate of denitrification. However, at higher S (r) values of 81 and 90 %, extraneous ethanol addition (C/N = 0.5-3) was needed to accelerate the denitrification rates.

Electrical resistance of both the electrodes of a lead-acid battery increases during discharge due to formation of lead sulfate, an insulator. Work of Metzendorf 1] shows that resistance increases sharply at about 65% conversion of active materials, and battery stops discharging once this critical conversion is reached. However, these aspects are not incorporated into existing mathematical models. Present work uses the results of Metzendorf 1], and develops a model that includes the effect of variable resistance. Further, it uses a reasonable expression to account for the decrease in active area during discharge instead of the empirical equations of previous work. The model's predictions are compared with observations of Cugnet et al. 2]. The model is as successful as the non-mechanistic models existing in literature. Inclusion of variation in resistance of electrodes in the model is important if one of the electrodes is a limiting reactant. If active materials are stoichiometrically balanced, resistance of electrodes can be very large at the end of discharge but has only a minor effect on charging of batteries. The model points to the significance of electrical conductivity of electrodes in the charging of deep discharged batteries. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Temperature (12 K <= T <= 300 K) dependent extended x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) studies at the Fe K edge in FeSe1-xTex (x = 0, 0.5 and 1.0) compounds have been carried out to understand the reasons for the increase in T-C upon Te doping in FeSe. While local distortions are present near superconducting onset in FeSe and FeSe0.5Te0.5, they seem to be absent in non superconducting FeTe. Of crucial importance is the variation of anion height. In FeSe0.5Te0.5, near the superconducting onset, the two heights, h(Fe-Se) and h(Fe-Te) show a nearly opposite behaviour. These changes indicate a possible correlation between Fe-chalcogen hybridization and the superconducting transition temperature in these Fe-chalcogenides.

In this study, branched poly(ethyleneimine), BPEI, was synthesized from carboxylic acid terminated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (c-MWNTs) and characterized using FTIR, TEM and TGA. The BPEI was then chemically grafted onto MWNTs to enhance the interfacial adhesion with the epoxy matrix. The epoxy composites with c-MWNTs and the BPEI-g-MWNTs were prepared using a sonication and mechanical stirring method, followed by curing at 100 degrees C and post-curing at 120 degrees C. The dynamic mechanical thermal analysis showed an impressive 49% increment in the storage elastic modulus in the composites. In addition, the nanoindentation on the composites exhibited significant improvement in the hardness and decrease in the plasticity index in the presence of the BPEI-g-MWNTs. Thus, epoxy composites with BPEI-g-MWNTs can be further explored as self-healing materials.

We study and compare magnetic and electron paramagnetic resonance behaviors of bulk and nanoparticles of Nd1-xCaxMnO3 in hole doped (x = 0.4; NCMOH) and electron doped (x = 0.6; NCMOE) samples. NCMOH in bulk form shows a complex temperature dependence of magnetization M(T), with a charge ordering transition at similar to 250 K, an antiferromagnetic (AFM) transition at similar to 150 K, and a transition to a canted AFM phase/mixed phase at similar to 80 K. Bulk NCMOE behaves quite differently with just a charge ordering transition at similar to 280 K, thus providing a striking example of the so called electron-hole asymmetry. While our magnetization data on bulk samples are consistent with the earlier reports, the new results on the nanoparticles bring out drastic effects of size reduction. They show that M(T) behaviors of the two nanosamples are essentially similar in addition to the absence of the charge order in them thus providing strong evidence for vanishing of the electron-hole asymmetry in nanomanganites. This conclusion is further corroborated by electron paramagnetic resonance studies which show that the large difference in the ``g'' values and their temperature dependences found for the two bulk samples disappears as they approach a common behavior in the corresponding nanosamples. A simple yet remarkable, electrochemically activated carbon paste electrode (EACPE) was prepared by successive potential cycling of carbon paste in a 0.1 M NaOH solution and was effectively used for the simultaneous determination of catecholamines such as dopamine (DA), epinephrine (E) and Norepinephrine (NE) in presence of uric acid (UA) and ascorbic acid (AA). Taking DA as the ideal catecholamine, the electrochemical behaviors of DA, UA and AA such as scan rate and pH variation was studied by cyclic voltammetry (CV) in phosphate buffer solution (PBS, pH 7.1). This electrochemical sensor exhibited strong electrocatalytic activity towards the oxidation of a mixture of catecholamines, UA and AA with apparent reduction of overpotentials. Crider optimum conditions, limit of detection (S/N = 3) of DA, E, NE, UA and AA was found to be 0.08, 0.08, 0.07, 0.1 and 6.0 mu M, respectively by differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). The analytical performance of this modified electrode as a biosensor was also demonstrated for the determination of DA, UA and AA in dopamine injection, human urine and vitamin C tablets, respectively, in presence of other interfering substances. The compressive behavior of carbon nanotube (CNT) foam with an entangled microstructure has become an important research area due to its excellent energy absorption capability. This report presents a tailored mechanical behavior of CNT foam under an applied magnetic field when all CNTs in the foam are coated with magnetic nanoparticles. The presence of nanoparticles not only enhanced the stiffness of the foam to four times but also revealed a nonlinear variation in both the stress and energy absorption capability with the gradual increase of the magnetic field. Magnetization of both CNT and attached nanoparticles along the magnetic field direction are shown to play a crucial role in determining the dominant deformation mechanism.

An experimental study of plane strain wedge indentation of a model porous brittle solid has been made to understand the effect of indentation parameters on the evolution of the deformation field and the accompanying volume change. A series of high-speed, high-resolution images of the indentation region and simultaneous measurements of load response were captured through the progression of the indentation process. Particle image velocimetry analysis of the images facilitated in situ measurement of the evolution of the resulting plastic zone in terms of incremental material displacement (velocity), strain rate, strain and volume change (e.g., local pore collapse). These measurements revealed initiation and propagation of flow localizations and fractures, as well as enabled estimate of volume changes occurring in the deformation zone. The results were directly compared with theoretical estimates of indentation pressure and deformation zone geometry and were used to validate a modified cavity expansion solution that incorporates effects of volume changes in the plastic zone. This paper proposes a probabilistic prediction based approach for providing Quality of Service (QoS) to delay sensitive traffic for Internet of Things (IoT). A joint packet scheduling and dynamic bandwidth allocation scheme is proposed to provide service differentiation and preferential treatment to delay sensitive traffic. The scheduler focuses on reducing the waiting time of high priority delay sensitive services in the queue and simultaneously keeping the waiting time of other services within tolerable limits. The scheme uses the difference in probability of average queue length of high priority packets at previous cycle and current cycle to determine the probability of average weight required in the current cycle. This offers optimized bandwidth allocation to all the services by avoiding distribution of excess resources for high priority services and yet guaranteeing the services for it. The performance of the algorithm is investigated using MPEG-4 traffic traces under different system loading. The results show the improved performance with respect to waiting time for scheduling high priority packets and simultaneously keeping tolerable limits for waiting time and packet loss for other services. The boxicity (respectively cubicity) of a graph G is the least integer k such that G can be represented as an intersection graph of axis-parallel k-dimensional boxes (respectively k-dimensional unit cubes) and is denoted by box(G) (respectively cub(G)). It was shown by Adiga and Chandran (2010) that for any graph G, cub(G) <= box(G) log(2) alpha(G], where alpha(G) is the maximum size of an independent set in G. In this note we show that cub(G) <= 2 log(2) X (G)] box(G) + X (G) log(2) alpha(G)], where x (G) is the chromatic number of G. This result can provide a much better upper bound than that of Adiga and Chandran for graph classes with bounded chromatic number. For example, for bipartite graphs we obtain cub(G) <= 2(box(G) + log(2) alpha(G)] Moreover, we show that for every positive integer k, there exist graphs with chromatic number k such that for every epsilon > 0, the value given by our upper bound is at most (1 + epsilon) times their cubicity. Thus, our upper bound is almost tight. (c) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The expression of a biologically active human IFN4 depends on the presence of a frameshift deletion polymorphism within the first exon of the interferon lambda 4 (IFNL4) gene. In this report, we use the lung carcinoma-derived cell line, A549, which is genetically viable to express a functional IFN4, to address transcriptional requirements of the IFNL4 gene. We show that the GC-rich DNA-binding transcription factor (TF) specificity protein 1 (Sp1) is recruited to the IFNL4 promoter and has a role in induction of gene expression upon stimulation with viral RNA mimic poly(I:C). By using RNAi and overexpression strategies, we also show key roles in IFNL4 gene expression for the virus-inducible TFs, nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells (NF-B), IFN regulatory factor 3 (IRF3), and IRF7. Interestingly, we also observe that overexpression of IFN4 influences IFNL4 promoter activity, which may further be dependent on the retinoic acid-inducible gene-I (RIG-I)-like receptor pathway. Together, our work for the first time reports on the functional characterization of the human IFNL4 promoter.

Lateral appendages often show allometric growth with a specific growth polarity along the proximo-distal axis. Studies on leaf growth in model plants have identified a basipetal growth direction with the highest growth rate at the proximal end and progressively lower rates toward the distal end. Although the molecular mechanisms governing such a growth pattern have been studied recently, variation in leaf growth polarity and, therefore, its evolutionary origin remain unknown. By surveying 75 eudicot species, here we report that leaf growth polarity is divergent. Leaf growth in the proximo-distal axis is polar, with more growth arising from either the proximal or the distal end; dispersed with no apparent polarity; or bidirectional, with more growth contributed by the central region and less growth at either end. We further demonstrate that the expression gradient of the miR396-GROWTH-REGULATING FACTOR module strongly correlates with the polarity of leaf growth. Altering the endogenous pattern of miR396 expression in transgenic Arabidopsis thaliana leaves only partially modified the spatial pattern of cell expansion, suggesting that the diverse growth polarities might have evolved via concerted changes in multiple gene regulatory networks.

We investigate the processes involved in the nucleation of colloidal lead selenide nanoparticles. Our studies show that an unusual pathway - an anion exchange reaction, causes the nucleation of lead selenide nanocrystals. In this process, one quantum dot is transformed into another due to a substitution of its constituent anions. The existence of this pathway was never anticipated perhaps due to its unusually rapid kinetics. The nucleation and growth kinetics of colloidal lead selenide quantum dots are found to fit well to a two-step process. The rate constant associated with the anion exchange process is found to be four orders of magnitude greater than that of the nanocrystal growth. The complete consumption of the initial oxide nanoparticle thus provides a sharp, temporally well-defined nucleation event.

The emission intensity of fluorophore molecule may change in presence of strong plasmon field induced by nanoparticles. The enhancement intensity is optimized through selective clustering or functionalization of nanoparticles in closed vicinity of fluorophore. Our study is aimed at understanding the enhancement mechanism of fluorescence intensity in presence of gold nanoparticles to utilize it in molecular sensing and in situ imaging in the microfluidic lab-on-chip device. Related phenomena are studied in situ in a microfluidic channel via fluorescence imaging. Detailed analysis is carried out to understand the possible mechanism of enhancement of fluorescence due to nanoparticles. In the present experimental study we show that SYTO9 fluorescence intensity increased in presence of Au nanoparticles of similar to 20 nm diameter. The fluorescence intensity is 20 time more compared to that in absence of Au nanoparticles. The enhancement of fluorescence intensity is attributed to the plasmonic resonance of Au nanoparticle at around the fluorescence emission wavelength. Underlying fundamental mechanism via dipole interaction model is explored for quantitative correlation of plasmonic enhancement properties.

The one-mode analysis method on the pull-in instability of micro-structure under electrostatic loading is presented. Taylor series are used to expand the electrostatic loading term in the one-mode analysis method, which makes analytical solution available. The one-mode analysis is the combination of Galerkin method and Cardan solution of cubic equation. The one-mode analysis offers a direct computation method on the pull-in voltage and displacement. In low axial loading range, it shows little difference with the established multi-mode analysis on predicting the pull-in voltages for three different structures (cantilever, clamped-clamped beams and the plate with four edges simply-supported) studied here. For numerical multi-mode analysis, we also show that using the structural symmetry to select the symmetric mode can greatly reduce both the computation effort and the numerical fluctuation.
