A nonsimilar boundary layer analysis is presented for the problem of free convection in power-law type non-Newtonian fluids along a permeable vertical plate with variable wall temperature or heat flux distribution. Numerical results are presented for the details of the velocity and temperature fields. A discussion is provided for the effect of viscosity index on the surface heat transfer rate.

A procedure to design a constant thickness composite disc of uniform strength by radially tailoring the anisotropic elastic constants is proposed. A special case of an isotropic disc with radially varying modulus is also examined. Analytical results are also compared with FEM calculations for two cases of radially varying anisotropy and for an isotropic disc with variable modulus. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd. Three-component ferroelectric superlattices consisting of alternating layers of SrTiO3, BaTiO3, and CaTiO3 (SBC) with variable interlayer thickness were fabricated on Pt(111)/TiO2/SiO2/Si (100) substrates by pulsed laser deposition. The presence of satellite reflections in x-ray-diffraction analysis and a periodic concentration of Sr, Ba, and Ca throughout the film in depth profile of secondary ion mass spectrometry analysis confirm the fabrication of superlattice structures. The Pr (remnant polarization) and Ps (saturation polarization) of SBC superlattice with 16.4-nm individual layer thickness (SBC16.4) were found to be around 4.96 and 34 μC/cm2, respectively. The dependence of polarization on individual layer thickness and lattice strain were studied in order to investigate the size dependence of the dielectric properties. The dielectric constant of these superlattices was found to be much higher than the individual component layers present in the superlattice configuration. The relatively higher tunability ( ∼ 55%) obtained around 300 K indicates that the superlattice is a potential electrically tunable material for microwave applications at room temperature. The enhanced dielectric properties were thus discussed in terms of the interfacial strain driven polar region due to high lattice mismatch and electrostatic coupling due to polarization mismatch between individual layers.

Ferroelectric superlattice structures consisting of alternating layers of BaTiO3 and SrTiO3 with variable interlayer thickness were grown on Pt (111)/TiO2/SiO2/Si (100) substrates by pulsed laser deposition. The presence of superlattice reflections in the x-ray diffraction pattern clearly showed the superlattice behavior of the fabricated structures over a range of 6.4–20 nm individual layer thicknesses. Depth profile conducted by secondary ion mass spectrometry analysis showed a periodic concentration of Ba and Sr throughout the film. Polarization hysteresis and the capacitance-voltage characteristics of these films show clear size dependent ferroelectric characteristics. The spontaneous (Ps) and remnant (Pr) polarizations increase gradually with decreasing periodicity, reach a maximum at a finite thickness and then decrease. The competition between the size effect and long-range ferroelectric interaction is suggested as a possible reason for this phenomenon. The temperature dependence of Ps and Pr shows a single ferroelectric phase transition, and the Curie temperature is estimated to be about 316 K. The curve shows that the ferroelectric superlattice tends to form an artificial material, responding as a single structure with an averaged behavior of both the parent systems.

Tungsten incorporated diamond like carbon (W-DLC) nanocomposite thin films with variable fractions of tungsten were deposited by using reactive biased target ion beam deposition technique. The influence of tungsten incorporation on the microstructure, surface topography, mechanical and tribological properties of the DLC were studied using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Raman spectroscopy. Atomic force microscope (AFM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), nano-indentation and nano-scratch tests. The amount of W in films gets increases with increasing target bias voltage and most of the incorporated W reacts with carbon to form WC nanoclusters. Using TEM and FFT pattern, it was found that spherical shaped WC nanoclusters were uniformly dispersed in the DLC matrix and attains hexagonal (W2C) crystalline structure at higher W concentration. On the other hand, the incorporation of tungsten led to increase the formation of C-sp(2) hybridized bonding in DLC network and which is reflected in the hardness and elastic modulus of W-DLC films. Moreover, W-DLC films show very low friction coefficient and increased adhesion to the substrate than the DLC film, which could be closely related to its unique nanostructure of the W incorporated thin films. Mobile ad-hoc network is a wireless ad-hoc network with dynamic network topology. The Dynamicity, due to the random node movement, and scarcity of resources lead to a challenge in monitoring the nodes in a MANET. Monitoring the lack of resources (bandwidth, buffer, and energy), misbehavior, and mobility at node level remains, a challenge. In a MANET the proposed protocol uses both static as well as mobile agents, where the mobile agents migrate to different clusters of the zones respectively, collect the node status information periodically, and provide a high level information to the static agent (which resides at the central node) by analyzing the raw information at the nodes. This, in turn, reduces the network traffic and conserves the workload of the central node, where a static agent is available with high level information and in coordination with other modules. The protocol has been tested in different size MANETs with variable number of nodes and applications. The results shown in the simulation indicates the effectiveness of the protocol.

In this paper, we study the free vibration of axially functionally graded (AFG) Timoshenko beams, with uniform cross-section and having fixed-fixed boundary condition. For certain polynomial variations of the material mass density, elastic modulus and shear modulus, along the length of the beam, there exists a fundamental closed form solution to the coupled second order governing differential equations with variable coefficients. It is found that there are an infinite number of non-homogeneous Timoshenko beams, with various material mass density, elastic modulus and shear modulus distributions having simple polynomial variations, which share the same fundamental frequency. The derived results can be used as benchmark solutions for testing approximate or numerical methods used for the vibration analysis of non-homogeneous Timoshenko beams. They can also be useful for designing fixed-fixed non-homogeneous Timoshenko beams which may be required to vibrate with a particular frequency. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Gold-silica hybrids are appealing in different fields of applications like catalysis, sensorics, drug delivery, and biotechnology. In most cases, the morphology and distribution of the heterounits play significant roles in their functional behavior. Methods of synthesizing these hybrids, with variable ordering of the heterounits, are replete; however, a complete characterization in three dimensions could not be achieved yet. A simple route to the synthesis of Au-decorated SiO2 spheres is demonstrated and a study on the 3D ordering of the heterounits by scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) tomography is presentedat the final stage, intermediate stages of formation, and after heating the hybrid. The final hybrid evolves from a soft self-assembled structure of Au nanoparticles. The hybrid shows good thermal stability up to 400 degrees C, beyond which the Au particles start migrating inside the SiO2 matrix. This study provides an insight in the formation mechanism and thermal stability of the structures which are crucial factors for designing and applying such hybrids in fields of catalysis and biotechnology. As the method is general, it can be applied to make similar hybrids based on SiO2 by tuning the reaction chemistry as needed.

In this paper, the governing equations for free vibration of a non-homogeneous rotating Timoshenko beam, having uniform cross-section, is studied using an inverse problem approach, for both cantilever and pinned-free boundary conditions. The bending displacement and the rotation due to bending are assumed to be simple polynomials which satisfy all four boundary conditions. It is found that for certain polynomial variations of the material mass density, elastic modulus and shear modulus, along the length of the beam, the assumed polynomials serve as simple closed form solutions to the coupled second order governing differential equations with variable coefficients. It is found that there are an infinite number of analytical polynomial functions possible for material mass density, shear modulus and elastic modulus distributions, which share the same frequency and mode shape for a particular mode. The derived results are intended to serve as benchmark solutions for testing approximate or numerical methods used for the vibration analysis of rotating non-homogeneous Timoshenko beams.

The interfacing of aromatic molecules with biomolecules to design functional molecular materials is a promising area of research. Intermolecular interactions determine the performance of these materials and therefore, precise control over the molecular organization is necessary to improve functional properties. Herein we describe the tunable biomimetic molecular engineering of a promising n-type organic semiconductor, naphthalene diimide (NDI), in the solid state by introducing minute structural mutations in the form of amino acids with variable Ca-functionality. For the first time we could achieve all four possible crystal packing modes, namely cofacial, brickwork, herringbone and slipped stacks of the NDI system. Furthermore, amino acid conjugated NDIs exhibit ultrasonication induced organogels with tunable visco-elastic and temperature responsive emission properties. The amino acid-NDI conjugates self-assemble into 0D nanospheres and 1D nanofibers in their gel state while the ethylamine-NDI conjugate forms 2D sheets from its solution. Photophysical studies indicated the remarkable influence of molecular ordering on the absorption and fluorescence properties of NDIs. Interestingly, the circular dichroism (CD) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies revealed the existence of helical ordering of NDIs in both solution and solid state. The chiral amino acids and their conformations with respect to the central NDI core are found to influence the nature of the helical organization of NDIs. Consequently, the origin of the preferential handedness in the helical organization is attributed to transcription of chiral information from the amino acid to the NDI core. On account of these unique properties, the materials derived from NDI-conjugates might find a wide range of future interdisciplinary applications from materials to biomedicine.

A new series of luminescent 4-(2-(4-alkoxyphenyl)-6-methoxypyridin-4-yl) benzonitriles containing three ring systems, viz. methoxy pyridine, benzonitrile and alkoxy benzene with variable alkoxy chain length, with bent-core structures were synthesized as potential mesogens and characterized by spectral techniques. Their liquid crystalline behavior was investigated by polarizing optical microscopy (POM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and variable temperature powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) measurements. The study reveals that compounds with shorter chain lengths i.e. m = 4] exclusively exhibit the nematic phase while compounds with longer chain lengths i.e. m = 6-14 (only even)] show predominantly the orthorhombic columnar phase. Single crystal X-ray analysis of 4-(2-(4-butyloxy/octyloxyphenyl)-6-methoxypyridin-4-yl) benzonitriles reveals that they possess slightly non-planar unsymmetrical bent structures and their molecular packing consists of nonconventional H-bond interactions; it also explains the observed liquid crystalline phase. An optical study indicates that the title compounds are good blue emitting materials showing absorption and emission bands in the range 335-345 nm and 415-460 nm, respectively. An electrochemical study of 4-(2-(4-octyloxyphenyl)-6-methoxypyridin-4-yl) benzonitrile shows a band gap of 1.89 eV with HOMO and LUMO energy levels of -5.06 and -3.17 eV, respectively. Also, density functional theory (DFT) calculations confirm its optimized geometry, electronic absorption and frontier molecular orbital distributions.

A new series of donor-acceptor-donor (D-A-D) type luminescent mesogens carrying 2-methoxy-3-cyanopyridine as a central core linked with variable alkoxy chain lengths (m = 6 and 8) as terminal substituents was synthesized and characterized using spectral methods. The newly synthesized molecules were subjected to single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD), powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), differential scanning calorimetric (DSC), polarizing optical microscopy (POM), and fluorescence emission studies in order to ascertain their mesogenic and photophysical properties. The SCXRD data on 4a and 4b reveal that the presence of short intermolecular contacts, viz. C-H center dot center dot center dot N, C-H center dot center dot center dot O, C-H center dot center dot center dot pi, and pi center dot center dot center dot pi interactions, is responsible for their crystal packing. The measured torsion angle values indicate that molecules possess distorted non-planar structure. The DSC, POM, and PXRD studies confirm that all the molecules show thermotropic liquid crystalline behaviour and exhibit rectangular columnar phase. Further, their UV-visible and fluorescence spectral studies reveal that the target molecules are luminescent displaying a strong absorption band in the range of 335-340 nm and a blue fluorescence emission band in the range of 395-425 nm (both in solution and film state) with good fluorescence quantum yields (10-49 %).

The purpose of this work was to develop a family of crosslinked poly(xylitol adipate salicylate)s with a wide range of tunable release properties for delivering pharmacologically active salicylic acid. The synthesis parameters and release conditions were varied to modulate polyester properties and to understand the mechanism of release. Varying release rates were obtained upon longer curing (35% in the noncured polymer to 10% in the cured polymer in 7 days). Differential salicylic acid loading led to the synthesis of polymers with variable cross-linking and the release could be tuned (100% release for the lowest loading to 30% in the highest loading). Controlled release was monitored by changing various factors, and the release profiles were dependent on the stoichiometric composition, pH, curing time, and presence of enzyme. The polymer released a combination of salicylic acid and disalicylic acid, and the released products were found to be nontoxic. Minimal hemolysis and platelet activation indicated good blood compatibility. These polymers qualify as ``bioactive'' and ``resorbable'' and can, therefore, find applications as immunomodulatory resorbable biomaterials with tunable release properties.

Arrhenius law implicates that only those molecules which possess the internal energy greater than the activation energy E-a can react. However, the internal energy will not be proportional to the gas temperature if the specific heat ratio gamma and the gas constant R vary during chemical reaction processes. The varying gamma may affect significantly the chemical reaction rate calculated with the Arrhenius law under the constant gamma assumption, which has been widely accepted in detonation and combustion simulations for many years. In this paper, the roles of variable gamma and R in Arrhenius law applications are reconsidered, and their effects on the chemical reaction rate are demonstrated by simulating one-dimensional C-J and two-dimensional cellular detonations. A new overall one-step detonation model with variable gamma and R is proposed to improve the Arrhenius law. Numerical experiments demonstrate that this improved Arrhenius law works well in predicting detonation phenomena with the numerical results being in good agreement with experimental data.

The problem of thermophoretic deposition of small particles onto cold surfaces is studied in two-dimensional and axisymmetric flow fields. The particle concentration equation is solved numerically together with the momentum and energy equations in the laminar boundary layer with variable density effect included. It is shown explicitly to what extent the particle concentration and deposition rate at the wall are influenced by the density variation effect for external flow past bodies. The general numerical procedure is given for two-dimensional and axisymmetric cases and is illustrated with examples of thermophoretic deposition of particles in flows past a cold cylinder and a sphere.
