This paper surveys the topology of macroporous silica prepared using latex templates covering the submicrometric range (0.1-0.7 mu m). The behavior of latex spheres in aqueous dispersion has been analyzed by dynamic light scattering (DLS) measurement indicating the most appropriate conditions to form well-defined cubic arrays. The optical behavior of latex spheres has been analyzed by transmittance and reflectance measurements in order to determine their diameter and filling factor when they were assembled in bidimensional arrays. Macroscopic templates have been obtained by a centrifugation process and their crystalline ordering has been confirmed by porosimetry and scanning electron microscopy. These self-assembled structures have been used to produce macroporous silica, whose final topology depends on the pore size distribution of the original template. It has been seen that latex spheres are ordered in a predominant fcc arrangement with slipping of tetragonal pores due to the action of attractive electrostatic interactions. The main effect is to change the spherical shape of voids in macroporous silica into a hexagonal configuration with possible applications to fabricate photonic devices with novel optical properties. Silica-poly(oxypropylene) (PPO) nanocomposites containing PPO with weak physical bonds between the organic (PPO) and inorganic (silica) phases were obtained by the sol-gel procedure. Three precursor sols containing silica and PPO with molecular weights of 1000, 2000 and 4000g/mol were prepared. The structure changes during the whole sol-gel process, i.e. sol formation, sol-gel transition and gel aging and drying were investigated in situ by small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). The experimental SAXS curves corresponding to sols and wet gels containing PPO of molecular weight 1000g/mol indicate that the aggregates formed during the studied process are fractal objects. Close to the sol-gel transition and during gel aging the fractal dimension is D=2.5. A clearly different structure evolution occurs in samples prepared with PPO with molecular weights 2000 and 4000 g/mol. Our SAXS results indicate the presence of two coexisting and well-defined structure levels, one of them corresponding to small silica clusters and the other to large silica aggregates. These two levels remain along the whole transformation. The SAXS curves of all dry samples are similar to those of the corresponding wet gels suggesting that no significant changes at nanoscopic scale occur during the drying process.

Spherical silica nanoparticles were prepared using a basic amino acid catalysis route and the kinetics of the particles growth was investigated by small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). L-arginine was used in the polar aqueous phase as the basic catalyst whereas the tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) was dissolved in the cyclohexane oil phase as the silicate monomer source. The SAXS measurements were taken in the aqueous phase at different reaction times. A high degree of monodispersity was clearly evidenced for the spherical nanoparticles as a result of the pronounced high-order oscillations observed in the SAXS curves. The SAXS data show that the particles number density remains unchanged since both the particle size as well as the volume fraction gradually increase. This process was discussed based on a reaction-controlled addition of monomer species at the surface of the growing particles. Consequently, the monodispersed spherical nanoparticles radius can as such be finely tuned from 7 to 12 nm by varying the reaction time. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In this work, a SiO2 spherical were prepared by the Stober Method and then recovered with a single layer of Eu2O3 oxide (SiO2@Eu2O3) obtained by the Polymeric Precursor Method. The SiO2@Eu2O3 powder was heated treated at 100, 300, 400, 500 and 800 A degrees C. The samples were characterized by the Scanning Electonic Microscopy (SEM), Thermal Analysis (TGA/DTA), and the luminescent properties of the SiO2@Eu2O3 powders were studied by their emission and excitation spectra as well as by the lifetime measurements of the Eu3+ D-5(0) -> aEuro parts per thousand F-7(2) transition. The SEM analysis shows that the silica prepared by the Stober Method is spherical with a particle size of 460 nm. The emission spectra of the SiO2@Eu2O3 powders presented the Eu3+ characteristics bands related to the D-5(0) -> aEuro parts per thousand F-7(J) (J = 0, 1, 2, 3, 4) transitions at 577, 591, 616, 649 and 695 nm, respectively. The band related to the D-5(0) -> aEuro parts per thousand F-7(2) transition is the most intense in the spectra, and its intensity decreases with the temperature enhancement. The decay curves of the SiO2@Eu2O3 samples presented monoexponential features, and the obtained lifetime values were higher than the Eu2O3 oxide. It was possible to conclude that the D-5(0) -> aEuro parts per thousand F-7(2) hypersensitive transition is strongly dependent on the Eu3+ surrounding.

Drug delivery systems involving the use of polymers are widely studied and discovery of biocompatible polymers has become the focus of research in this area. Psoralen loaded poly(DL-lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) microspheres to be used in PUVA therapy (psoralen and UVA irradiation (ultraviolet A, 320-400 nm) of psoriasis were identified in paraffin sections by histological analysis. The psoralen loaded PLGA microspheres were prepared using the solvent evaporation technique. They were spherical and possessed an external smooth surface as observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis. This study describes a modification in the routine preparation of microsphere samples for examination by light microscopy. The changes involved fixative agents and/or stains allowing the identification of microspheres containing a non-fluorescent material. The preservation and identification of microspheres in tissues for histological processing in paraffin was greatly improved by these modifications as proven by our results. (c) 2007 Elsevicr Ltd. Pb2CrO5 nanoparticles were embedded in an amorphous SiO2 matrix by the sol-gel process. The pH and heat treatment effects were evaluated in terms of structural, microstructural and optical properties from Pb2CrO5/SiO2 compounds. X-ray diffraction (XRD), high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and diffuse reflectance techniques were employed. Kubelka-Munk theory was used to calculate diffuse reflectance spectra that were compared to the experimental results. Finally, colorimetric coordinates of the Pb2CrO5/SiO2 compounds were shown and discussed. In general, an acid pH initially dissolves Pb2CrO5 nanoparticles and following heat treatment at 600 A degrees C crystallized into PbCrO4 composition with grain size around 6 nm in SiO2 matrix. No Pb2CrO5 solubilization was observed for basic pH. These nanoparticles were incorporated in silica matrix showing a variety of color ranging from yellow to orange.

Silica gel surface modified with imidazolylpropyl group was used to adsorb MX2 (M = Mn, Ni, Cu, Zn, and Cd; X = Cl, Br, and I) and FeCl3 from ethanol and acetone solution. The adsorption capacity and the intensity of the adsorption were determined by using the Langmuir equation. The influences of the solvent, temperature, and degree of functionalization on the adsorption were also studied. The infrared spectra of the functionalized silica were recorded between 1700-1300 cm-1. The bands of the imidazole skeletal vibrations are shifted to higher frequencies upon metal-to-base nitrogen interaction. © 1985.

Silica gel surfaces, organofunctionalized with 2-mercaptobenzimidazole, iminosalicylaldehyde and imidazole groups were examined using the small angle X-ray scattering technique (SAXS). From the scattering intensity data it was concluded that particles have a uniform size after the coupling reaction. The chemical treatment of the silica gel leads to an attachment of the organofunctional groups on the solid-pore interface of the silica with an increase of the mean size of the solid phase and some coalescence of the pores. © 1989.

The chemically modified silica, obtained by reacting 2-mercaptobenz-imidazole with 3-chloropropyl silica gel, was used to adsorb Cu(II), Zn(II), Cd(II) and Pb(II) from aqueous solutions at various pH. Between pH 3-5, the order of selectivity was Hg(II) > Cd(II) ≫ Cu(II) ∼ Zn(II) ∼ Pb(II). Under batch conditions retentions of 100% were achieved for all metals except for Pb(II) where 93% was attained. Under column conditions recoveries of 100% were obtained for all metals. © 1990 Springer-Verlag.
