Avaluació del projecte "Nightingale/Rossinyol": projecte de mentoria amb estudiants universitaris adreçat a alumnes d'origen estranger

La recerca que aquí es presenta es centra en tres objectius. Primerament, obtenir informació d’altres experiències de mentoria d’alumnat immigrat desenvolupades en altres països (Alemanya, Àustria, Eslovènia, Estats Units, Israel, Noruega, Suècia, Suïssa, etc.) amb l’objectiu d’elaborar un marc teòric sòlid que ajudi a argumentar científicament el projecte "Rossinyol". Aquest objectiu s’ha treballat mitjançant la recerca bibliogràfica i documental a nivell nacional, estatal i internacional. Posteriorment, realitzar una primera anàlisi dels ímputs que aporta el projecte Rossinyol al territori on es porta a terme. Mitjançant l’elaboració i passi d’una entrevista a mentors, mestres (dels mentorats) i enllaços territorials (persones del territori que es posen en contacte amb les escoles per seleccionar els mentorats –entre d’altres tasques-) s’ha analitzat: els punts forts i febles del projecte, els possibles efectes de la mentoria en el mentorat i el tipus de relacions que s’han establert entre els agents que participen en el projecte. Finalment, establir uns criteris d’avaluació que permetin donar pautes per desenvolupar aquest projecte –o projectes similars de mentoria- en altres llocs del nostre país. En aquest apartat del treball s’ha elaborat una proposta d’indicadors amb el conseqüent instrument per, en una fase posterior, recollir informació que permetin fer un seguiment acurat, objectiu i extens del projecte.

Famílies immigrades i escoles: dinàmiques de relació a Catalunya

A Catalunya els discursos acadèmics i de l'administració han anat evolucionant fins que s'han imposat aquells que apunten a que la relació entre l'escola, la família i l'entorn és clau per l'èxit escolar de l'alumnat i el bon funcionament del sistema educatiu. Malgrat aquesta evolució, en la pràctica el canvi és lent i, sovint, complicat, donat que apareixen resistències en les dues institucions, família i escola, degut a que fins avui sempre s'ha mantingut una relació marcada pel desequilibri de poder. El nostre treball teòric i, sobretot, empíric s'ha centrat en la relació entre la família immigrada i l'escola a Catalunya. Com es presentarà, la creació del que hem anomenat dinàmiques positives de relació i comunicació en els centres escolars es troba condicionada per les actituds i els comportaments dels equips directius, els professionals i les famílies, tot i que també l'espai físic en que es donen aquestes relacions és important. Respecte a la organització del centre hem destacat el papel de l'equip directiu. Diferenciant una models de gestió observem aquells més facilitadors de la relació i la comunicació amb i entre les famílies i aquells més desincentivadors. Això sí, sempre s'ha de tenir en compte les actituds dels docents i de les famílies que són múltiples i complexes.

Studying the micro-angels approach to micro-investment decisions

Purpose: The paper analyzes the micro-angels investment behaviour, looking both to the criteria used in the selection of their investment projects and to the characteristics of their guidance role during the investment period. Design/Methodology/Approach: The paper focuses on a double bottom line movement of French micro-angels clubs that has been operating since 1983. Our primary source of data is an online survey carried out during March 2012, asking members of clubs all over France for different aspects of their procedures. Findings: Our findings suggest that micro-angels are interested in small, socially or environmentally friendly projects having the potential to contribute to the development of their neighbourhood. We find that women are even more interested than men in such projects. Educated micro-angels value entrepreneurial motivation and understanding of the project more than less-educated micro-angels. We also point out the factors that micro-angels consider important in accompanying enterprises. Here we find that gender makes little difference. However, retired micro-angels value financial diagnosis made conjointly with entrepreneurs, while both active micro-angels and educated micro-angels value more the use of their network to help micro-entrepreneurs. Practical/Social Implications: Given the potential benefits of micro-angels investing and guiding the development of micro-enterprises, a social micro-angel investment on a major scale in developing countries could help in tackling some of the problems faced by the development of microfinance, such as the over-indebtedness of micro-entrepreneurs. Practitioners and new initiatives would gain from understanding what adaptations need to be made. Originality/value: We expect to add to the venture capital theory to take into account non-economic motives.

Multimarket contact externalities: the effect of rival's multimarket contacts on focal firm performance

Given that firms develop their activities in a network of multiple players, interfirm rivalry is not only a matter of direct competitors, but also of indirect competition. In spite of this, the literature on competitive dynamics tends to focus on analyzing rivalry as an exclusive function of the competitive relationship between a focal firm and its direct rivals. In this article, we extend competitive dynamics literature by considering how focal firms are affected by the relationships of their rivals with third-party firms. Specifically, we study the effect that the multimarket contacts of rivals produces on the performance of the focal firm. Additionally, we incorporate the idea that there are different strategic options for operating in an industry that affect the intensity of multimarket contact externalities. Our results show that multimarket contact among firms causes externalities that indirectly affect firms that are not directly involved in this competitive relationship. We find that multimarket contact externalities differ between and within strategic groups.

Market rewards to patterns on increasing earnings: do cash flow patterns, accruals manipulation and real activities manipulation matter?

This study explores whether firms have differential price-earnings multiples associated with their means of achieving a sequential pattern of increasing positive earnings. Our main findings show that market participants assign higher price-earnings multiples to firms when their pattern of increasing earnings is supported by the same pattern of increasing cash flows. Market participants assign lower price-earnings multiples to firms suspect of having engaged in accrual-based earnings management, sales manipulation, and overproduction to achieve the earnings pattern. We find, however, that market participants do not penalize firms suspect of having achieved the earnings pattern through the opportunistic reduction of discretionary expenses.

Proposta didàctica: els temes en context

En aquesta proposta didàctica s'ofereixen algunes estratègies de treball per abordar el tema de l'aprenentatge de terminologia especialitzada a l'últim cicle de l'educació primària. La idea de què es parteix per fer una proposta d'aquesta mena és que la terminologia té un paper fonamental en el procés de coneixement i definició del món que ens envolta; per això es proposen unes activitats sobre el reconeixement dels conceptes i les seves relacions com un mitjà per construir el coneixement. L'article s'estructura en uns continguts teòrics adreçats al professorat i en unes activitats per als estudiants, preparades amb l'objectiu de treballar la terminologia en context.

A reassessment of family reunification in Europe. The case of Senegalese couples

Contemporary policy makers in most European destination countriesexpress a great concern about reunification of migrants’ families. Newrestrictions multiply in almost all countries, on the grounds thatmigrants would take advantage of a too lax system and that it wouldfoster an influx of non-desirable migrants. So far, quantitative evidenceis scarce on migrants’ practices in matter of family reunification.Taking advantage of a unique longitudinal dataset that includesSenegalese individuals surveyed both at origin (in Senegal) and inEurope (France, Italy and Spain), we perform event-history analyses toshow three things. First, couple separation is very often a long lastingsituation. Second, when separated because of international migration,wives and husbands do not only reunify in Europe but quite commonlyin Senegal. And third, those who reunify in Europe are those who arethe most adapted or adaptable to the European culture and economy.

Union activism in an inclusive model of industrial relations : evidence from an Spanish case

In this article we analyze the reasons, within the context of Spanish industrial relations, for trade union members’ active participation in their regional union. The case of Spain is particularly interesting as the unions’ main activity, collective bargaining, is a public good. The text, based on research involving a representative survey of members of a regional branch of the “Workers” Commissions” (Comisiones Obreras) trade union, provides empirical evidence that the union presence in the workplace has a significant influence on members’ propensity for activism. By contrast, the alternative hypothesis based on instrumental reasons appears of little relevance in the Spanish industrial relations context.

Political mobilisation and models of trade unionism : Southern Europe in comparative perspective

The relationship between union membership and political mobilization has been studied under many perspectives, but quantitative cross-national analyses have been hampered by the absence of international comparable survey data until the first round of the European Social Survey (ESS-2002) was made available. Using different national samples from this survey in four moments of time (2002, 2004 and 2006), our paper provides evidence of cross-country divergence in the empirical association between political mobilisation and trade union membership. Cross-national differences in union members’ political mobilization, we argue, can be explained by the existence of models of unionism that in turn differ with respect to two decisive factors: the institutionalisation of trade union activity and the opportunities left-wing parties have available for gaining access to executive power.

Marcatge estructural i morfosintàctic del Corpus Tècnic amb l'estàndard SGML

L'edició de textos fent ús de mitjans informàtics ha comportat avantatges i inconvenients. Mentre que ha fet molt accessible l'edició acurada de textos també ha provocat tot un seguit de problemes, un del quals és la dificultat de compartir recursos.Per altra banda, la lingüística necessita emprar corpus voluminosos per conèixer amb més precisió i fonament el comportament real del llenguatge. És evident que l'obtenció i consegüent preparació d'un corpus per a la seva explotació esdevé un procés costós en temps i recursos, motiu pel qual és força atractiu i gairebé necessari compartir aquest material de recerca amb altres organitzacions. En aquest treball s'examinen les diferents propostes d'aplicació de l'estàndard SGML (Standard Generalized Markup Language) en la constitució de corpus textuals per a la recerca lingüística, amb èmfasi especial en les solucions proposades a l'Institut Universitari de Lingüística Aplicada de la Universitat Pompeu Fabra.

Aquest article conté una proposta per a la representació de les estructures predicatives (és a dir, dels predicats amb els seus arguments) en els formalismes basats en estructures de trets tipificades. L’article comença amb una discussió dels objectius i del nivell de descripció de la representació que es proprosa; i després se centra en una exemplificació minuciosa de les estructures predicatives de totes les categories majors (verbs, adjectius, preposicions i noms), així com d’algunes relacions de modificació.

Usos i abusos de la imatge en l’univers cinematogràfic de la Shoah

El present treball proposa un recorregut a través de les imatges del genocidi dels jueus a Europa rodades durant la Segona gerra mundial, i més especialment, durantl’alliberament dels camps nazis. Estudia conjuntament aquestes imatges, els seus usos i les seves migracions com a elements fonamentals en el procés de construcció del’imaginari de la Shoah. En segon lloc, analitza de quina manera els arxius visuals del genocidi constitueixen un referent en la representació contemporània de la de la víctima i les relacions que s’estableixen entre aquesta figura i la retòrica testimonial en la configuració d’una memòria i d’un relat sobre l’esdeveniment

Voice Transformations for Extreme Vocal Effects

Extreme Vocal Effects (EVE) in music are so recent that few studies have been carried out about how they are physiologically produced and whether they are harmful or not for the human voice.Voice Transformations in real-time are possible nowadays thanks to new technologies and voice processing algorithms. This Master's Thesis pretends to define and classify these new singing techniques and to create a mapping between the physiological aspect of each EVE to its relative spectrumvariations.Voice Transformation Models based on these mappings are proposed and discussed for each one of these EVEs. We also discuss different transformation methods and strategies in order to obtain better results.A subjective evaluation of the results of the transformations is also presented and discussed along with further work, improvements, and working lines on this field.
