Considering aspects of international literature in the area of Information Science (IS) regarding need, search, behavior and use of information, this study aims to explore the historical path and interpretations of the concepts of user and use of information, under the support reference of the notions of information system and subject agency. For such, a corpus was formed with 15 literature reviews of the Annual Review of Information Science and Technology - ARIST - which brought a theoretical panorama on the concepts here studied. The analysis of these reviews was tooled with categorizations of the use of information proposed by Rachel Anne Fleming-May, making it possible to situate two initial phases identified, particularized for orbiting a notion of information system, being the first phase characterized by a more static conception of system and the second by a more dynamic meaning. Finally, a third and last phase was found in reading ARIST, which was better visualized after the year 2000. In the first decade of the 21st century, studies started considering, complementarily to previous phases, the agency of subjects from the notions of interaction and context, in actions of use, production and appropriation of information and knowledge.

BackgroundThere are no published reports on studies comparing itraconazole (ITC), sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim (cotrimoxazole, CMX), and ITC followed by CMX (ITC/CMX) in the treatment of paracoccidiodomycosis. This study aimed to compare the efficacy, effectiveness, safety and time to clinical and serologic cure in paracoccidioidomycosis patients treated with ITC or CMX, the antifungal agents most widely used.MethodologyA quasi-experimental study was performed in 177 patients with a confirmed or probable diagnosis of paracoccidioidomycosis. Treatment was divided into two stages: 1) initial, which was continued until clinical cure was achieved and the erythrocyte sedimentation rate decreased to normal values; 2) complementary, which was continued until serologic cure was achieved. Medians were compared via the Mann-Whitney test, and frequencies were compared via the chi-squared test. The assessment of variables as a function of time was performed using Kaplan-Meier curves and Cox regression. The significance level was established as p <= 0.05.Principal FindingsNo difference was found in the efficacy and effectiveness of the initial treatment of 47 individuals given ITC and 130 individuals given CMX; however, the time to clinical cure was shorter in the former compared with the latter group (105 vs. 159 days; p = 0.001), specifically in patients with the chronic form. Efficacy and effectiveness of the three regimens were similar in the complementary treatment; however, the time to serologic cure was shorter when ITC (161 days) or CMX (495 days) was used compared with ITC/CMX (881 days) [p = 0.02]. The independent predictors of a shorter time to serologic cure were treatment with ITC [risk ratio = 6.61 (2.01-21.75)] or with CMX [risk ratio = 5.11 (1.91-13.67)]). The prevalence of side effects was lower with ITC (6.4%) than with CMX (20.0%; p = 0.03).ConclusionsSince ITC induced earlier clinical cure and was better tolerated than CMX, such triazole should be considered the first-choice for PCM treatment.

While viviparity confers protection to the embryos during gestation, it increases energetic costs for the mother, which acquires new relations to its offspring. Maternal-fetal transfer of nutrients can occur in different patterns: as lecithotrophy (nourished by yolk) or matrotrophy (nourished by the mother). The development of Poecilia vivipara embryos was described macroscopically and microscopically, and the form of nutritional provisioning was identified. Embryonic development was divided into three prefertilization and seven postfertilization stages. The first organ to appear is the notochord, followed by the nervous, digestive and cardiovascular systems, and then by muscles and eyes. Embryonic nutritional provisioning was lecithotrophic, with yolk persisting until the last developmental stages and rich in proteins and polysaccharides. This kind of embryonic nutrition confirms the pattern found in the family Poeciliidae.

Adaptation of global food systems to climate change is essential to feed the world. Tropical cattle production, a mainstay of profitability for farmers in the developing world, is dominated by heat, lack of water, poor quality feedstuffs, parasites, and tropical diseases. In these systems European cattle suffer significant stock loss, and the cross breeding of taurine x indicine cattle is unpredictable due to the dilution of adaptation to heat and tropical diseases. We explored the genetic architecture of ten traits of tropical cattle production using genome wide association studies of 4,662 animals varying from 0% to 100% indicine. We show that nine of the ten have genetic architectures that include genes of major effect, and in one case, a single location that accounted for more than 71% of the genetic variation. One genetic region in particular had effects on parasite resistance, yearling weight, body condition score, coat colour and penile sheath score. This region, extending 20 Mb on BTA5, appeared to be under genetic selection possibly through maintenance of haplotypes by breeders. We found that the amount of genetic variation and the genetic correlations between traits did not depend upon the degree of indicine content in the animals. Climate change is expected to expand some conditions of the tropics to more temperate environments, which may impact negatively on global livestock health and production. Our results point to several important genes that have large effects on adaptation that could be introduced into more temperate cattle without detrimental effects on productivity.

Dentoalveolar ankylosis is described as the direct union between root cementum/dentin and alveolar bone. Its etiology is unknown, and conflicting opinions have been presented to explain it. Late detection of ankylosed primary teeth may cause serious problems to the occlusion and generally demands a more complex treatment approach. The purpose of this report is to present an unusual case of severe infraocclusion of the primary maxillary right second molar associated with a posterior crossbite in a 6-year-old child. The initial treatment option was tooth extraction, but the tooth resumed eruption spontaneously. After correction of the posterior crossbite and a 1-year follow-up, the tooth remained in occlusion and the permanent successor was developing without problems. From this unusual outcome, it may be concluded that further investigation of this anomaly of eruption is needed. (J Dent Child 2013;80(2):88-91)

Parenting practices can be understood as the behaviors emitted by parents to educate and socialize their children. The present study investigates the influence of the parenting practices according to the baby sex and age, family configuration and number of children. For this, 50 adult mothers were questioned according to the Parental Styles Inventory for Mothers with Babies (IEPMB). An analysis with the results indicates that mothers with baby girls normally uses a more Positive Monitoring practice when compared with mothers with boy babies. A positive correlation (r = +0.54, p <0.001) was found, between the age of the baby and the practice of negligence, meaning that there is an increase of the usage in the practical as the baby age increases. Also a significant difference (p = 0.04) in the Inconsistent Punishment practice pointed out to the fact that mothers from nuclear families seem to use this practice more than mothers from other family configurations. And multiparous mothers use more Physical Abuse practical than primiparous mothers (p = 0.02). Concerning this analysis, we support a discussion in the present work about the importance of interventions that focus on the effect of specific positive practices, the reduction of negative practices and the role of the network support on the children development.

Parental practices have a primordial role in the children development and is closely related to with behavioral repertoires. The study aimed at examining of mothers, both adult and adolescent ones considering also their babies'age. It identified the parental practices of 111 mothers of babies between one and twelve months, of whom 59 were adults and 52 adolescents. They participated in the study answering an inventory of parental practices. When the age of the babies was taken into consideration, some practices showed significant differences, but when adult mothers' practices were compared to those of the adolescent ones differences were not significant. Results show the importance of understanding the nature of these mothers of babies' practices, as foundation for the development of interventionist programs.

The aim of this study was to describe the styles and parenting practices of adolescent mothers to evaluate the influence of participation in an intervention program of parental practices. 14 adolescent mothers contributed with this research. For the evaluation was used the Inventory of Parenting Styles of Babies Mothers (IEPMB). The results showed that the participants before beginning the group had an average of Parental Style Good, after participating in the group participants had an average of Parenting Style Great. The intervention group presented effectively promoting the acquisition and/or maintenance of positive parenting practices and the reduction in negative practices.
