In this study, the photodynamic action of liposomes (LP) and nanocapsules (NC) containing Chloroaluminum phthalocyanine (CIAIPc), on the human melanoma cell (WM 1552C), was assessed. The light source was setup at 672 nm, which corresponds to the maximum absorption wavelength of the CIAIPc. Both colloidal carriers presented size in nanometric scale as well as negative zeta potential. The cellular damage was light dose dependent ranging from 30% of cell death at 70 mJ.cm(-2) to 90% of death at 700 mJ.cm(-2). However, the photocytotoxic effect of LP at 70 mJ.cm(-2) was slightly more efficient to induce cellular death than NC formulation. At 140 mJ.cm(-2), and 700 mJ.cm(-2) both nanocarriers were equally efficient to induce cellular damage. Therefore, in the present work, the maximum phototoxic effect was obtained with 700 mJ.cm(-2) of light dose, in combination with 0.29 mu g.mL(-1) of CIAIPc encapsulated into LP and NC. The cells were also positive to annexin V, after the PDT treatment with LP and NC, showing that one of the mechanisms of cellular death involved is apoptosis. In summary, the potential of LP and NC as a drug delivery system, in Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) against melanoma, has been confirmed using a lower concentration of the photosensitizer and lower light doses than that applied in current protocols. This is an innovative proposal to treat melanoma cell lines that until now have not received the benefit of the PDT protocol for treatment.

Introduction: Recently developed portable dental X-ray units increase the mobility of the forensic odontologists and allow more efficient X-ray work in a disaster field, especially when used in combination with digital sensors. This type of machines might also have potential for application in remote areas, military and humanitarian missions, dental care of patients with mobility limitation, as well as imaging in operating rooms. Objective: To evaluate radiographic image quality acquired by three portable X-ray devices in combination with four image receptors and to evaluate their medical physics parameters. Materials and methods: Images of five samples consisting of four teeth and one formalin-fixed mandible were acquired by one conventional wall-mounted X-ray unit, MinRay (R) 60/70 kVp, used as a clinical standard, and three portable dental X-ray devices: AnyRay (R) 60 kVp, Nomad (R) 60 kVp and Rextar (R) 70 kVp, in combination with a phosphor image plate (PSP), a CCD, or a CMOS sensor. Three observers evaluated images for standard image quality besides forensic diagnostic quality on a 4-point rating scale. Furthermore, all machines underwent tests for occupational as well as patient dosimetry. Results: Statistical analysis showed good quality imaging for all system, with the combination of Nomad (R) and PSP yielding the best score. A significant difference in image quality between the combination of the four X-ray devices and four sensors was established (p < 0.05). For patient safety, the exposure rate was determined and exit dose rates for MinRay (R) at 60 kVp, MinRay (R) at 70 kVp, AnyRay (R), Nomad (R) and Rextar (R) were 3.4 mGy/s, 4.5 mGy/s, 13.5 mGy/s, 3.8 mGy/s and 2.6 mGy/s respectively. The kVp of the AnyRay (R) system was the most stable, with a ripple of 3.7%. Short-term variations in the tube output of all the devices were less than 10%. AnyRay (R) presented higher estimated effective dose than other machines. Occupational dosimetry showed doses at the operator`s hand being lowest with protective shielding (Nomad (R): 0.1 mu Gy). It was also low while using remote control (distance > 1 m: Rextar (R) < 0.2 mu Gy, MinRay (R) < 0.1 mu Gy). Conclusions: The present study demonstrated the feasibility of three portable X-ray systems to be used for specific indications, based on acceptable image quality and sufficient accuracy of the machines and following the standard guidelines for radiation hygiene. Aim of study: This study sought to determine whether multidisciplinary case conference reviews improved outcomes for nursing home residents, and the effects of this team approach to resident care on carers, including the hands-on carers employed by the nursing home, and health professionals. Method: 245 residents of three Canberra nursing homes were enrolled in this non-randomised controlled trial. The intervention consisted of sessions of three case conference reviews held between 10/4/96 and 4/12/96. These sessions were attended by the General Practitioners (GPs) of the residents discussed, the GP project officer from the ACT Division of General Practice, a clinical pharmacist, senior nursing staff, other health professionals eg physiotherapist, and occasionally the resident concerned or their representative. At each review, a case presentation by the resident's GP was followed by a multidisciplinary discussion of all aspects, medical and non-medical, of the resident's care. The review concluded with a management plan for the resident. In total 75 residents were reviewed. Main outcome measures: Medication use and cost, and mortality. Results: One month after the reviews were completed comparisons between those who were reviewed and those who were not showed non-significant reductions in medication orders, medication cost, and mortality in the reviewed group. Many of the 92 recommendations in the management plans that were carried out benefited the residents (n=37) and/or carers (n=24). The responses of the GPs and the Directors of Nursing to the reviews were overwhelmingly positive. Conclusion: Recommendations arising from multidisciplinary case conferences were carried out to the benefit of patients and carers. Given the support shown by key stakeholders, multidisciplinary conferences should be used more.

In this paper theoretical models have been established that can account for the gas transmission through nanocomposite laminates, consisting of an oxide layer of finite permeability containing defects, on a polymer sheet of finite thickness. The defect shapes can either be in the form of long cracks or rectangular holes. The models offer a choice of exact numerical calculations or fast and intuitive analytical approximations. The experimental measurements of oxygen permeation through four different SiOx/poly (ethylene terephthalate) samples that were strained to produce distributions or cracks showed good agreement when compared with predicted results from the approximate analytic model. As a consequence of this observation, a key practical conclusion is that, because of the logarithmic dependence of transmission on the width of a crack, for a given strain it is better to have a small number of large cracks rather than a large number of small cracks. The design of open-access elliptical cross-section magnet systems has recently come under consideration. Obtaining values for the forces generated within these unusual magnets is important to progress the designs towards feasible instruments. This paper presents a novel and flexible method for the rapid computation of forces within elliptical magnets. The method is demonstrated by the analysis of a clinical magnetic resonance imaging magnet of elliptical cross-section and open design. The analysis reveals the non-symmetric nature of the generated Maxwell forces, which are an important consideration, particularly in the design of superconducting systems.

An inverse, current density mapping (CDM) method has been developed for the design of elliptical cross-section MRI magnets. The method provides a rapid prototyping system for unusual magnet designs, as it generates a 3D current density in response to a set of target field and geometric constraints. The emphasis of this work is on the investigation of new elliptical coil structures for clinical MRI magnets. The effect of the elliptical aspect ratio on magnet performance is investigated. Viable designs are generated for symmetric, asymmetric and open architecture elliptical magnets using the new method. Clinically relevant attributes such as reduced stray field and large homogeneous regions relative to total magnet length are included in the design process and investigated in detail. The preliminary magnet designs have several novel features.

Two polymer-montmorillonite (MMT) nanocomposites have been synthesized by in situ intercalative polymerization. The styrene monomer is intercalated into the interlayer space of organically modified MMT, a layered clay mineral. Upon the intercalation, the complex is subsequently polymerized in the confinement environment of the interlayer space with a free radical initiator, 2,2-azobis isobutyronitrile. The aniline monomer is also intercalated and then polymerized within the interlayer space of sodium- and copper-MMT initiated by ammonium peroxodisulphate and interlayer copper cations respectively. X-ray diffraction indicates that the MMT layers are completely dispersed in the polystyrene matrix and an exfoliated structure has been obtained. The resulting polyaniline-MMT nanocomposites show a highly ordered structure of a single polyaniline layer stacked with the MMT layers. Fourier transform infrared spectra further confirm the intercalation and formation of both polymer-MMT nanocomposites.

Solid solution effects on the hardness and flow stress have been studied for zinc contents between 0.2 and 2.4 at% (0.5 and 6.9 wt%) in Mg. The alloys were grain refined with 0.6 wt% zirconium to ensure a similar grain size at all compositions. The hardness increases with the zinc content as Hv(10) (kg mm(-2)) = 9 Zn (at%) + 33. At low solute concentrations the (0.2%) proof strength does not change significantly with concentration. At concentrations above 0.7 at%, within the supersaturated solid solution region, the rate of solid solution hardening is high, following a c(2) rule, where c is the atom fraction of Zn. It is suggested that short-range order may account for most of the observed strengthening in concentrated Mg-Zn alloys.
