Elerctron Transport Coefficients in N2 in Crossed Fields at Low E/p

The numerical solutions of Boltzmann transpott equation for the energy distribution of electrons moving in crossed fields in nitrogen have been obtained for 100 ÿ E/p ÿ 1000 V M-1 Torr-1 and for 0ÿ B/p ÿ 0.02 Tesla Torr-1 using the concept of energy dependent effective field intensity. From the derived distribution functions the electron mean energy, the tranaverse and perpendicular drift velocities and the averaged effective field intensity (Eavef) which signifies the average field intensity experienced by electron swarms in E àB field have been derived. The maximum difference between the electron mean energy for a given E ÃÂB field and that corresponding to Eavef/p (p is the gas pressure) is found to be within ñ3.5%.

Matrix Processors Using p-adic Arithmetic for Exact Linear Computations

A unique code (called Hensel's code) is derived for a rational number by truncating its infinite p-adic expansion. The four basic arithmetic algorithms for these codes are described and their application to rational matrix computations is demonstrated by solving a system of linear equations exactly, using the Gaussian elimination procedure.

Ba(3)(P(1-x)Mn(x)O(4))(2): Blue/green inorganic materials based on tetrahedral Mn(V)

We describe a blue/green inorganic material, Ba(3)(P(1-x)-Mn(x)O(4))(2) (I) based on tetrahedral MnO(4)(3-):3d(2) chromophore. The solid solutions (I) which are sky-blue and turquoise-blue for x <= 0.25 and dark green for x >= 0-50, are readily synthesized in air from commonly available starting materials, stabilizing the MnO(4)(3-) chromophore in an isostructural phosphate host. We suggest that the covalency/ionicity of P-O/Mn-O bonds in the solid solutions tunes the crystal field strength around Mn(V) such that a blue colour results for materials with small values of x. The material could serve as a nontoxic blue/green inorganic pigment.

Synthesis of 5-p-hydroxybenzyl-5,6-dihydro-2-naphthol, (+/-)-sequirin-d

A high-yield six-step synthesis of sequirin D (1a), a naturally occurring norlignan, is described. Michael addition of deoxyanisoin (2) to acrylonitrile gives a ketonitrile (3), which on Wolff–Kishner reduction is reduced and hyrolysed in situ to 4,5-bis-p-methoxyphenylpentanoic acid (4). Cyclodehydration of (4) with polyphosphoric acid, followed by borohydride reduction and dehydration furnishes di-O-methylsequirin D (1b) which affords on demethylation sequirin D (1a) in an overall yield from (2) of 60%. The key synthon (4) has also been prepared by three other routes.

Assessment of estrus cyclicity in the Asian elephant (Elephas maximus) by measurement of fecal progesterone metabolite 5 alpha-P-3OH, using a non-invasive assay

Reproductive management of the Asian elephant (Elephas maximus) is important for its conservation. To monitor its estrous cyclicity, we earlier used an indirect ELISA to show that levels of fecal progesterone (P(4))-metabolite (allopregnanolone: 5 alpha-P-3OH) in semi-captive females sampled randomly positively correlated with serum P(4) levels [12]. In this longitudinal study (51 weeks), we measured levels of fecal 5 alpha-P-3OH and serum P(4) in seven semi-captive female elephants. Females exhibited three types of hormonal profiles. Four females showed cyclical patterns of fecal 5 alpha-P-3OH and serum P(4) typical of normal estrous cycles, two showed acyclic pattern while one showed high values indicative of a pregnant animal. Values for anestrous or follicular phases were <= 0.3 mu g g(-1), (5 alpha-P-3OH) and <= 0.3 ng mL(-1) (P(4)); for luteal phase 0.32-11.09 mu g g(-1) (5 alpha-P-3OH) and 0.32-1.48 ng mL(-1) (P(4)); for pregnancy 1.41-7.38 mu g g(-1) (5 alpha-P-3OH) and 0.39-1.6 ng mL(-1) (R(4)). A positive correlation (t = 8.8, p < 0.01, n = 321) between levels of fecal 5 alpha-P-3OH and serum P4 was observed. A random sample of 30 free-ranging female elephants showed fecal 5 alpha-P-3OH values of 0.06-23.4 mu g g(-1), indicating them to be in different stages of estrous cyclicity. This study is the first to assess the reproductive phases of female Asian elephants based on the correlative-patterns of both the fecal 5 alpha-P-3OH and serum P(4) values over multiple estrous cycles. Designed Cyclic Permutants of HIV-1 gp120: Implications for Envelope Trimer Structure and Immunogen Design

Most HIV-1 broadly neutralizing antibodies are directed against the gp120 subunit of the env surface protein. Native env consists of a trimer of gp120-gp41 heterodimers, and in contrast to monomeric gp120, preferentially binds CD4 binding site (CD4bs)-directed neutralizing antibodies over non-neutralizing ones. Some cryo-electron tomography studies have suggested that the V1V2 loop regions of gp120 are located close to the trimer interface. We have therefore designed cyclically permuted variants of gp120 with and without the h-CMP and SUMO2a trimerization domains inserted into the V1V2 loop. h-CMP-V1cyc is one such variant in which residues 153 and 142 are the N- and C-terminal residues, respectively, of cyclically permuted gp120 and h-CMP is fused to the N-terminus. This molecule forms a trimer under native conditions and binds CD4 and the neutralizing CD4bs antibodies b12 with significantly higher affinity than wild-type gp120. It binds non-neutralizing CD4bs antibody F105 with lower affinity than gp120. A similar derivative, h-CMP-V1cycl, bound the V1V2 loop-directed broadly neutralizing antibodies PG9 and PG16 with similar to 20-fold higher affinity than wild-type JRCSF gp120. These cyclic permutants of gp120 are properly folded and are potential immunogens. The data also support env models in which the V1V2 loops are proximal to the trimer interface.

Esterification of stearic acid with p-cresol over modified Indian bentonite clay catalysts

The esterification of stearic acid with p-cresol using modified Indian bentonite clay catalysts has been reported. The reaction was studied over exchanged clays, acid activated clays, exchanged acid activated clays, aluminium pillared clay, aluminium pillared acid activated clay, molecular sieve Al-MCM-41, zeolite H beta, ZrO2, S-ZrO2, p-TSA, montmorillonite K10, and montmorillonite KSF in o-xylene for 6 h. The catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction and surface area measurements. The acidity was determined by n-butylamine back-titration method and DRIFTS after pyridine adsorption. Acid activated Indian bentonite (AAIB) was found to be a better catalyst compared to other catalysts in the esterification of stearic acid with p-cresol.

IN-VITRO CYTOTOXICITY AND CELL CYCLE ANALYSIS OF TWO NOVEL BIS-1, 2, 4-TRIAZOLE DERIVATIVES: 1,4-BIS[5-(5-MERCAPTO-1,3,4-OXADIAZOL-2-yl-METHYL)-THIO-4-(p-TOLYL)-1, 2,4-TRIAZOL-3-yl]-BUTANE (MNP-14) AND 1,4-BIS[5-(CARBETHOXY-METHYL)-THIO-4-(p-ETHOXY PHENYL)-1,2,4-TRIAZOL-3-yl]-BUTANE (MNP-16)

In the present study, we have tested the cytotoxic and DNA damage activity of two novel bis-1,2,4 triazole derivatives, namely 1,4-bis[5-(5-mercapto-1,3,4-oxadiazol-2-yl-methyl)-thio4-(p-tolyl)-1,2 ,4-triazol-3-yl]-butane (MNP-14) and 1,4-bis[5-(carbethoxy-methyl)-thio-4-(p-ethoxy phenyl) -1,2,4-triazol-3-yl]-butane (MNP-16). The effect of these molecules on cellular apoptosis was also determined. The in-vitro cytotoxicity was evaluated by a 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay as well as Trypan blue dye exclusion methods against human acute lymphoblastic leukemia (MOLT4) and lung cancer cells (A549). Our results showed that MNP-16 induced significant cytotoxicity (IC50 of 3-5 mu M) compared with MNP-14. The cytotoxicity induced by MNP-16 was time and concentration dependent. The cell cycle analysis by flow cytometry (fluorescence-activated cell sorting [FACS]) revealed that though there was a significant increase in the apoptotic population (sub-G1 phase) with an increased concentration of MNP-14 and 16, there was no cell cycle arrest. Torque Angle Loop Analysis of Synchronous Machines

This paper reports the dynamic stability analysis of a single machine infinite bus system through torque angle loop analysis and forms an extension of the work on Block diagrams and torque angle loop analysis of synchronous machines reported by I. Nagy [3]. It aims to incorporate in the machine model, the damper windings (one on each axis) and to compare the dynamic behaviour of the system with and without damper windings. The effect of using different stabilizing signals (viz. active power and speed deviations) on the dynamic performance is analysed and the significant effect of damper windings on the dynamic behaviour of the system is highlighted.

Evaporation Heat Transfer Coefficient in a Capillary Pumped Loop and Loop Heat Pipe for Different Working Fluids

Capillary pumped loop (CPL) and loop heat pipe (LHP) are passive two-phase heat transport devices. They have been gaining importance as a part of the thermal control system of spacecraft. The evaporation heat transfer coefficient at the tooth-wick interface of an LHP or CPL has a significant impact on the evaporator temperature. It is also the main parameter in sizing of a CPL or LHP. Experimentally determined evaporation heat transfer coefficients from a three-port CPL with tubular axially grooved (TAG) evaporator and a TAG LHP with acetone, R-134A, and ammonia as working fluids are presented in this paper. The influences of working fluid, hydrodynamic blocks in the core, evaporator configuration (LHP or CPL), and adverse elevation (evaporator above condenser) on the heat transfer coefficient are presented.

Process and properties of electroless Ni-Cu-P-ZrO2 nanocomposite coatings

Electroless Ni-Cu-P-ZRO(2) composite coating was successfully obtained on low carbon steel matrix by electroless plating technique. Coatings with different compositions were obtained by varying copper as ternary metal and nano sized zirconium oxide particles so as to obtain elevated corrosion resistant Ni-P coating. Microstructure, crystal structure and composition of deposits were analyzed by SEM, EDX and XRD techniques. The corrosion behavior of the deposits was studied by anodic polarization, Tafel plots and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) in 3.5% sodium chloride solution. The ZRO(2) incorporated Ni-P coating showed higher corrosion resistance than plain Ni-P. The introduction of copper metal into Ni-P-ZRO(2) enhanced the protection ability against corrosion. Higher spin quasinormal modes and one-loop determinants in the BTZ black hole

We solve the wave equations of arbitrary integer spin fields in the BTZ black hole background and obtain exact expressions for their quasinormal modes. We show that these quasinormal modes precisely agree with the location of the poles of the corresponding two point function in the dual conformal field theory as predicted by the AdS/CFT correspondence. We then use these quasinormal modes to construct the one-loop determinant of the higher spin field in the thermal BTZ background. This is shown to agree with that obtained from the corresponding heat kernel constructed recently by group theoretic methods.
