This paper presents solutions of the NURISP VVER lattice benchmark using APOLLO2, TRIPOLI4 and COBAYA3 pin-by-pin. The main objective is to validate MOC based calculation schemes for pin-by-pin cross-section generation with APOLLO2 against TRIPOLI4 reference results. A specific objective is to test the APOLLO2 generated cross-sections and interface discontinuity factors in COBAYA3 pin-by-pin calculations with unstructured mesh. The VVER-1000 core consists of large hexagonal assemblies with 2mm inter-assembly water gaps which require the use of unstructured meshes in the pin-by-pin core simulators. The considered 2D benchmark problems include 19-pin clusters, fuel assemblies and 7-assembly clusters. APOLLO2 calculation schemes with the step characteristic method (MOC) and the higher-order Linear Surface MOC have been tested. The comparison of APOLLO2 vs.TRIPOLI4 results shows a very close agreement. The 3D lattice solver in COBAYA3 uses transport corrected multi-group diffusion approximation with interface discontinuity factors of GET or Black Box Homogenization type. The COBAYA3 pin-by-pin results in 2, 4 and 8 energy groups are close to the reference solutions when using side-dependent interface discontinuity factors.

Desenvolve-se um método para estimar os parâmetros de uma rede hidráulica a partir de dados observados de cargas hidráulicas transientes. Os parâmetros físicos da rede como fatores de atrito, rugosidades absolutas, diâmetros e a identificação e quantificação de vazamentos são as grandezas desconhecidas. O problema transiente inverso é resolvido utilizando uma abordagem indireta que compara os dados disponíveis de carga hidráulica transiente observados com os calculados através de um método matemático. O Método Transiente Inverso (MTI) com um Algoritmo Genético (AG) emprega o Método das Características (MOC) na solução das equações do movimento para escoamento transiente em redes de tubos. As condições de regime permanente são desconhecidas. Para avaliar a confiabilidade do MTI-AG desenvolvido aqui, uma rede-exemplo é usada para os vários problemas de calibração propostos. O comportamento transiente é imposto por duas manobras distintas de uma válvula de controle localizada em um dos nós da rede. Analisam-se, ainda, o desempenho do método proposto mediante a variabilidade do tamanho do registro transiente e de possíveis erros de leitura nas cargas hidráulicas. Ensaios numéricos realizados mostram que o método é viável e aplicável à solução de problema inverso em redes hidráulicas, sobretudo recorrendo-se a poucos dados observados e ao desconhecimento das condições iniciais de estado permanente. Nos diversos problemas de identificação, as informações transientes obtidas da manobra mais brusca produziu estimações mais eficientes.

Question: How do interactions between the physical environment and biotic properties of vegetation influence the formation of small patterned-ground features along the Arctic bioclimate gradient? Location: At 68° to 78°N: six locations along the Dalton Highway in arctic Alaska and three in Canada (Banks Island, Prince Patrick Island and Ellef Ringnes Island). Methods: We analysed floristic and structural vegetation, biomass and abiotic data (soil chemical and physical parameters, the n-factor [a soil thermal index] and spectral information [NDVI, LAI]) on 147 microhabitat releves of zonalpatterned-ground features. Using mapping, table analysis (JUICE) and ordination techniques (NMDS). Results: Table analysis using JUICE and the phi-coefficient to identify diagnostic species revealed clear groups of diagnostic plant taxa in four of the five zonal vegetation complexes. Plant communities and zonal complexes were generally well separated in the NMDS ordination. The Alaska and Canada communities were spatially separated in the ordination because of different glacial histories and location in separate floristic provinces, but there was no single controlling environmental gradient. Vegetation structure, particularly that of bryophytes and total biomass, strongly affected thermal properties of the soils. Patterned-ground complexes with the largest thermal differential between the patterned-ground features and the surrounding vegetation exhibited the clearest patterned-ground morphologies.

The role that meridional overturning circulation (MOC) patterns played in poleward heat transport during the extreme warmth of the Early to Late Cretaceous is a fundamental and unresolved question in climate dynamics. In order to address this question we must determine where deep waters formed, and how they may have circulated during periods of extreme warmth. Here we present late Albian through Maastrichtian (105 to 65 Ma) Nd isotope records from Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP) and Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) sites in the proto-Indian Ocean and the tropical Pacific. Comparison of these data with previously published records indicates deep-water formation in the Indian sector of the Southern Ocean began at least ?105 Ma, extending the record of high-latitude convection back into the Early Cretaceous prior to the peak warmth of the mid-Cretaceous. The growing body of data supports a mode of MOC in part characterized by high-latitude downwelling during the peak of greenhouse warmth of the Mesozoic and Cenozoic. However, this mode of MOC likely was characterized by numerous locations of deep convection that were regionally important, but not significant in terms of a globally overturning circulation due to paleogeographic and bathymetric barriers.
