The paper reports the effect of addition of small amount of Mg on the mechanical and oxidation properties of Nb-Nb3Si eutectic composites in Nb-Si system under the condition of suction casting. Mg addition increases the volume fraction of primary dendrites of Nb solid solution. This phase contains significant amount of strengthening precipitates. Two different precipitates are identified. The large plate shaped precipitates are that of hcp phase, while fine coherent precipitates have the structure similar to recently identified delta-Nb11Si2 phase. The Mg addition improves both the strength and ductility of the composite at room temperature (similar to 1.4 GPa and similar to 5% engineering strain) as well as at 700 degrees C(similar to 1.2 GPa and similar to 7% engineering strain). The presence of Mg results in a complex barrier layer which significantly increases the oxidation resistance up to a temperature of at least 1000 degrees C. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. The deformation dynamics of metal foils (<0.25 mm thick) subjected to micro-blast wave are presented in this paper. The energy of micro-blast wave emanating from the open end of a polymer tube is used to deliver micro-particles for bio-medical applications. In these experiments metal foils are used to transfer the energy of the micro-blast wave to the micro-particles. Using cubic root scaling law the over pressure of the blast wave at the open end of the polymer tube is estimated and using this peak plate over pressure is estimated. The finite element analysis is used to estimate the velocity profile of the deforming metal foils. The finite element analysis results are compared with experimental results for the maximum deformation and deformed shape. Based on the deformation velocity, metal foil to be used for experiments is selected. Among the materials investigated 0.1 mm thick brass foil has the maximum velocity of 205 m/s and is used in the experiments. It is found from finite element analysis that the particles deposited within a radius of 0.5 mm will leave the foil with nearly equal velocity (error < 5%). The spray cone angle which is the angle of deviation of the path of particles from the axis of the polymer tube is also estimated and found to be less than 7 degrees up to a radius of 0.75 mm. Illustrative experiments are carried out to deliver micro particles (0.7 mu m diameter tungsten) into plant tissues. Particle penetration depth up to 460 mu m was achieved in ground tissue of potato tuber. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The present study is focussed at establishing an appropriate electrolyte system for developing electrochemically stable and fluorine (F) containing titania (F-TiO2) films on Cp Ti by micro-arc oxidation (MAO) technique. To fabricate the F-TiO2 films on Cp Ti, different electrolyte solutions of chosen concentrations of tri-sodium orthophosphate (TSOP, Na3PO4 center dot I2H2O), potassium hydroxide (KOH) and various F-containing compounds such as ammonium fluoride (NH4F), potassium fluoride (KF), sodium fluoride (NaF) and potassium fluorotitanate (K2TiF6) are employed. The structural and morphological characteristics, thickness and elemental composition of the developed films have been assessed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) techniques. The in-vitro electrochemical corrosion behavior of the films was studied under Kokubo simulated body fluid (SBF) environment by potentiodynamic polarization, long term potential measurement and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) methods. The XRD and SEM-EDS results show that the rutile content in the films vary in the range of 15-37 wt% and the F and P contents in the films is found to be in the range of 2-3 at% and 2.9-4.7 at% respectively, suggesting that the anatase to rutile phase transformation and the incorporation of F and P into the films are significantly controlled by the respective electrolyte solution. The SEM elemental mapping results show that the electrolyte borne F and P elements are incorporated and distributed uniformly in all the films. Among all the films under study, the film developed with 5 g TSOP+2 g KOH+3 g K2TiF6 electrolyte system exhibits considerably improved in-vitro corrosion resistance and therefore best suited for biomedical applications. In the present work, we experimentally study the flow of water over textured hydrophobic surfaces in a micro-channel. Shear stress measurements are done along with direct visualization of trapped air pockets on the hydrophobic surface. The trapped air pockets on such surfaces are known to be responsible for apparent slip at these surfaces and hence in significant drag reduction. In typical circumstances, the apparent slip reduces over time as seen, for example, from our shear stress measurements. This implies that the drag reduction will not be sustained. We have performed extensive visualizations of the trapped air pockets while varying flow parameters like the flow rate and the pressure. We present here direct visualizations that show that under some conditions, the air pockets can grow with time. The variation of the air pocket size with time is found to change qualitatively and quantitatively as the flow rate is varied. These measured changes in the air pocket size with time have a direct bearing on the sustainability of apparent slip in micro-channel flows.

Nanoindentation is a technique for measuring the elastic modulus and hardness of small amounts of materials. This method, which has been used extensively for characterizing metallic and inorganic solids, is now being applied to organic and metalorganic crystals, and has also become relevant to the subject of crystal engineering, which is concerned with the design of molecular solids with desired properties and functions. Through nanoindentation it is possible to correlate molecular-level properties such as crystal packing, interaction characteristics, and the inherent anisotropy with micro/macroscopic events such as desolvation, domain coexistence, layer migration, polymorphism, and solid-state reactivity. Recent developments and exciting opportunities in this area are highlighted in this Minireview.

The role of a computer emerged from modeling and analyzing concepts (ideas) to generate concepts. Research into methods for supporting conceptual design using automated synthesis had attracted much attention in the past decades. To find out how designers synthesize solution concepts for multi-state mechanical devices, ten experimental studies were conducted. Observations from these empirical studies would be used as the basis to develop knowledge involved in the multi-state design synthesis process. In this paper, we propose a computational representation for expressing the multi-state design task and for enumerating multi-state behaviors of kinematic pairs and mechanisms. This computational representation would be used to formulate computational methods for the synthesis process to develop a system for supporting design synthesis of multiple state mechanical devices by generating a comprehensive variety of solution alternatives.

Automated synthesis of mechanical designs is an important step towards the development of an intelligent CAD system. Research into methods for supporting conceptual design using automated synthesis has attracted much attention in the past decades. In our research, ten experimental studies are conducted to find out how designers synthesize solution concepts for multi-state mechanical devices. The designers are asked to think aloud, while carrying out the synthesis. These design synthesis processes are video recorded. It has been found that modification of kinematic pairs and mechanisms is the major activity carried out by all the designers. This paper presents an analysis of these synthesis processes using configuration space and topology graph to identify and classify the types of modifications that take place. Understanding of these modification processes and the context in which they happened is crucial to develop a system for supporting design synthesis of multiple state mechanical devices that is capable of creating a comprehensive variety of solution alternatives.

This paper reports an experimental investigation of oscillating temperature field beneath a single isolated nucleation site using a non-invasive TLC (thermochromic liquid crystal) based thermography technique. Empirical correlations are presented to demonstrate the influence of system pressure and wall heat flux on different ebullition characteristics in the nucleate pool boiling regime of refrigerant R-134a. TLC transient response and two-phase flow structure are captured using synchronized, high resolution imaging. It is observed that the area of influence of nucleation site exhibits a two-part distinct transient behavior during the bubble growth period and broadens to a maximum of 1.57 times the bubble diameter at the instant of bubble departure. This is accompanied by a sharp fall of 2.5 degrees C in the local excess temperature at the nucleation site, which results in momentary augmentation (similar to 40%) in the local heat transfer coefficient at the nucleation origin. The enhanced heat transfer rate observed during the bubble peel-off event is primarily due to transient micro-convection in the wake of the retreating bubble. Further, the results indicate that a slight increase in system pressure from 813.6 to 882.5 kPa has no considerable effect on either the wall superheat or the overall heat transfer coefficient and ebullition frequency. In addition, correlations have been obtained for bubble Reynolds number, Jackob number and the dimensionless bubble generation frequency in terms of modified boiling number.

Aluminum scandium binary alloys represent a promising precipitation-hardening alloy system. However, the hardness of the binary alloys decreases with the rapid coarsening of Al3Sc precipitate during high-temperature aging. In the current study, we report a new approach to compensate for the loss of mechanical properties by combining rapid solidification with very small ternary addition of transition metal Ni. This addition yields dispersion, and at a critical concentration improves the mechanical properties. We explore additions of a maximum of 0.06 at. pct of Nickel to a binary Al-0.14 at. pct Sc alloy, which yield nickel-rich dispersions. We report two kinds of biphasic dispersions containing AlNi2Sc/Al9Ni2 and alpha-Al/Al9Ni2 phase combinations. The maximum improvement in mechanical properties occurs with the addition of 0.045 at. pct Ni with a yield strength of 239 +/- A 7 MPa for an aging treatment at 583 K (310 A degrees C) for 15 hours. We report the mechanical properties of a framework structure, Cu2F(HF)(HF2)(pyz)(4)](SbF6)(2)](n) (pyz = pyrazine), in which Cu(pyz)(2)](2+) layers are pillared by HF2- anions containing the exceptionally strong F-H center dot center dot center dot F hydrogen bonds. Nanoindentation studies on single-crystals clearly demonstrate that such bonds are extremely robust and mechanically comparable with coordination bonds in this system.

In a cyber physical system like vehicles number of signals to be communicated in a network system has an increasing trend. More and more mechanical and hydraulic parts are replaced by electronic control units and infotainment and multimedia applications has increased in vehicles. Safety critical hard real time messages and aperiodic messages communicated between electronic control units have been increased in recent times. Flexray is a high bandwidth protocol consisting of static segment for supporting hard real time messages and a dynamic segment for transmitting soft and non real time messages. In this paper, a method to obtain the stability region for the random arrival of messages in each electronic control units which is scheduled in the dynamic segment of Flexray protocol is presented. Number of mini slots available in the dynamic segment of Flexray restricts the arrival rate of tasks to the micro controllers or the number of micro controllers connected to the Flexray bus. Stability region of mathematical model of the system is compared with the Flexray protocol simulation results.

In this work, the effect of hybridizing micro-Ti with nano-SiC particulates on the microstructural and the mechanical behaviour of Mg-5.6Ti composite were investigated. Mg materials containing micron-sized Ti particulates hybridized with different amounts of nano-size SiC particulates were synthesized using the disintegrated melt deposition method followed by hot extrusion. The microstructural and mechanical behaviour of the developed Mg hybrid composites were studied in comparison with Mg-5.6Ti. Microstructural characterization revealed grain refinement attributed to the presence of uniformly distributed micro-Ti particles embedded with nano-SiC particulates. Electron back scattered diffraction (EBSD) analyses of Mg-(5.6Ti + 1.0SiC)(BM) hybrid composite showed relatively more localized recrystallized grains and lesser tensile twin fraction, when compared to Mg-5.6Ti. The evaluation of mechanical properties indicated that the best combination of strength and ductility was observed in the Mg-(5.6Ti + 1.0SiC)(BM) hybrid composites. The superior strength properties of the Mg-(5.6Ti + x-SiC)(BM) hybrid composites when compared to Mg-5.6Ti is attributed to the presence of nano-reinforcements, the uniform distribution of the hybridized particles and the better interfacial bonding between the matrix and the reinforcement particles, achieved by nano-SiC addition.

The magnetic saw effect, induced by the Lorentz force generated due to the application of a series of electromagnetic ( EM) pulses, can be utilized to cut a metallic component containing a pre-existing cut or crack. By combining a mechanical force with the Lorentz force, the cut can be propagated along any arbitrary direction in a controlled fashion, thus producing an `electromagnetic jigsaw', yielding a novel tool-less, free-formed manufacturing process, particularly suitable for hard-to-cut metals. This paper presents validation of the above concept based on a simple analytical model, along with experiments on two materials - Pb foil and steel plate. (C) 2013 The Authors. The motion of DNA (in the bulk solution) and the non-Newtonian effective fluid behavior are considered separately and self-consistently with the fluid motion satisfying the no-slip boundary condition on the surface of the confining geometry in the presence of channel pressure gradients. A different approach has been developed to model DNA in the micro-channel. In this study the DNA is assumed as an elastic chain with its characteristic Young's modulus, Poisson's ratio and density. The force which results from the fluid dynamic pressure, viscous forces and electromotive forces is applied to the elastic chain in a coupled manner. The velocity fields in the micro-channel are influenced by the transport properties. Simulations are carried out for the DNAs attached to the micro-fluidic wall. Numerical solutions based on a coupled multiphysics finite element scheme are presented. The modeling scheme is derived based on mass conservation including biomolecular mass, momentum balance including stress due to Coulomb force field and DNA-fluid interaction, and charge transport associated to DNA and other ionic complexes in the fluid. Variation in the velocity field for the non-Newtonian flow and the deformation of the DNA strand which results from the fluid-structure interaction are first studied considering a single DNA strand. Motion of the effective center of mass is analyzed considering various straight and coil geometries. Effects of DNA statistical parameters (geometry and spatial distribution of DNAs along the channel) on the effective flow behavior are analyzed. In particular, the dynamics of different DNA physical properties such as radius of gyration, end-to-end length etc. which are obtained from various different models (Kratky-Porod, Gaussian bead-spring etc.) are correlated to the nature of interaction and physical properties under the same background fluid environment.

In this study, we present a new computational approach for studying the effect of melt convection on solidification at the micro-scale level. Models for dendritic and eutectic growth are developed on the basis of the enthalpy technique and incorporate the presence of flow in the domain. Simulation results show the growth and motion of dendrites and evolution of eutectic lamellae and their interaction with melt flow. The present study provides the foundation for development of an efficient generalized micro-scale solidification model, which can potentially be coupled with system-scale models based on the same framework.
