We have studied the fluctuation effects in proton-proton collisions through the analysis of their observables. To investigate the role of fluctuation 5 in the initial conditions, we have used the interacting gluon model, modified by the inclusion of the impact parameter, and have applied the one-dimensional Landau's Hydrodynamical Model to the fireballs thus generated. The rapidity and pseudorapidity distributions were calculated using two distinct procedures, one taking the fluctuations into account and the other the usual method considering only one fireball with the average initial conditions. The results show indeed the importance of fluctuations.

Chemical characterization as well as spectroscopical study of the L-histidine-europium(III) complex were developed both experimental and theoretically. Molecular mechanics (MM) simulation was performed in order to have indication of the compound structure and the Eu 3+ chemical environment. The Simple Overlap Model (SOM) was applied to predict spectroscopic quantities as 5D 0→ 7F 0/ 5D 0→ 7F 2 intensity ratio, 5D 0→ 7F 1 transition splitting and the intensity Ω λ parameters (λ = 2 and 4). Satisfactory results are obtained with 0.1 and 2/3 as the effective charges of the nitrogen (gN) and oxygen (gO) respectively, and their polarizabilities (α) depend on the distance. © 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. The aim of the present study was to analyse the haemodynamic effects induced by the hypothalamic disconnection (HD) caudal or rostral to the paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus (PVN). Mean arterial pressure (MAP), hindlimb, renal and mesenteric blood flow and vascular conductance (HVC, RVC and MVC, respectively) were measured in urethane (1.2 g/kg, i.v.) anesthetized rats for 60 min after disconnection. HD caudal to the PVN was performed with a double-edged microknife of bayonet shape (R=1 mm, H=2 mm) stereotaxically placed, lowered 2.8 mm caudal to the bregma along the midline. The cut was achieved by rotating the microknife 90° right and 90° left. HD rostral to the PVN was performed with the knife placed 0.8 mm caudal to the bregma. Thirty minutes after the hypothalamic disconnection caudal (HD-C), a decrease in MAP was observed (-14±3 mm Hg), reaching a 60-min decrease of 30±3 mm Hg. Hindlimb conductance increased 10 min after HD (156±14%) and remained elevated throughout the experimental period. On the contrary, we observed a transitory renal vasoconstriction (82±9%, ≤20 min) and a late mesenteric vasodilation, starting at 30 min (108±4%) and reaching 138±6% at 60 min. In rats with HD rostral to the PVN, we only observed minor changes in the cardiovascular parameters. In the MAP, there was a slight decrease 60 min after the hypothalamic disconnection rostral (HD-R) (-9±4 mm Hg). There were no significant changes in HVC. RVC and MVC were increased 60 min after the HD-R (116±12% and 124±11%, respectively). These results suggest that vasodilation in the hindlimb and in the mesenteric bed could contribute to the observed decrease in MAP in HD caudal to PVN rats. © 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. Objective. To identify preliminary core sets of outcome variables for disease activity and damage assessment in juvenile systemic lupus erythematosus (JSLE) and juvenile dermatomyositis (JDM). Methods. Two questionnaire surveys were mailed to 267 physicians from 46 different countries asking each member to select and rank the response variables used when assessing clinical response in patients with JSLE or JDM. Next, 40 paediatric rheumatologists from 34 countries met and, using the nominal group technique, selected the domains to be included in the disease activity and damage core sets for JSLE and JDM. Results. A total of 41 response variables for JSLE and 37 response variables for JDM were selected and ranked through the questionnaire surveys. In the consensus conference, domains selected for both JSLE and JDM activity or damage core sets included the physician and parent/patient subjective assessments and a global score tool. Domains specific for JSLE activity were the immunological tests and the kidney function parameters. Concerning JDM, functional ability and muscle strength assessments were indicated for both activity and damage core sets, whereas serum muscle enzymes were included only in the activity core set. A specific paediatric domain called 'growth and development' was introduced in the disease damage core set for both diseases and the evaluation of health-related quality of life was advised in order to capture the influence of the disease on the patient lifestyle. Conclusions. We developed preliminary core sets of measures for disease activity and damage assessment in JSLE and JDM. The prospective validation of the core sets is in progress.

Purpose: This study compared the effect of two postpolymerization heat treatments on the cytotoxicity of three denture base resins on L929 cells using 3H-thymidine incorporation and MTT assays. Materials and Methods: Sample disks of Lucitone 550, QC 20, and Acron MC resins were fabricated under aseptic conditions and stored in distilled water at 37°C for 48 hours. Specimens were then divided into three groups: (1) heat treated in microwave oven for 3 minutes at 500 W; (2) heat treated in water bath at 55°C for 60 minutes; and (3) no heat treatment. Eluates were prepared by placing three disks into a sterile glass vial with 9 mL of Eagle's medium and incubating at 37°C for 24 hours. The cytotoxic effect from the eluates was evaluated using the 3H-thymidine incorporation and MTT assays, which reflect DNA synthesis levels and cell metabolism, respectively. Results: The components leached from the resins were cytotoxic to L929 cells when 3H- thymidine incorporation assay was employed. In contrast, eluates from all resins revealed noncytotoxic effects as measured by MTT assay. For both MTT assay and 3H-thymidine incorporation, the heat treatments did not decrease the cytotoxicity of the materials tested. Conclusion: Resins were graded by 3H-thymidine incorporation assay as slightly cytotoxic and by MTT assay as noncytotoxic. Cytotoxicity of the denture base materials was not influenced by microwave or water bath heat treatment.

Objective. Juvenile localized scleroderma (JLS) includes a number of conditions often grouped together. With the long-term goal of developing uniform classification criteria, we studied the epidemiological, clinical and immunological features of children with JLS followed by paediatric rheumatology and dermatology centres. Methods. A large, multicentre, multinational study was conducted by collecting information on the demographics, family history, triggering environmental factors, clinical and laboratory features, and treatment of patients with JLS. Results. Seven hundred and fifty patients with JLS from 70 centres were enrolled into the study. The disease duration at diagnosis was 18 months. Linear scleroderma (LS) was the most frequent subtype (65%), followed by plaque morphea (PM) (26%), generalized morphea (GM) (7%) and deep morphea (DM) (2%). As many as 15% of patients had a mixed subtype. Ninety-one patients (12%) had a positive family history for rheumatic or autoimmune diseases; 100 (13.3%) reported environmental events as possible trigger. ANA was positive in 42.3% of the patients, with a higher prevalence in the LS-DM subtype than in the PM-GM subtype. Scl70 was detected in the sera of 3% of the patients, anticentromere antibody in 2%, anti-double-stranded DNA in 4%, anti-cardiolipin antibody in 13% and rheumatoid factor in 16%. Methotrexate was the drug most frequently used, especially during the last 5 yr. Conclusion. This study represents the largest collection of patients with JLS ever reported. The insidious onset of the disease, the delay in diagnosis, the recognition of mixed subtype and the better definition of the other subtypes should influence our efforts in educating trainees and practitioners and help in developing a comprehensive classification system for this syndrome. © 2006 Oxford University Press.

A new Hypoptopomatinae, Corumbataia britskii, is described based on specimens recently collected in a tributary of the upper Rio Paraná basin, Mato Grosso do Sul State, Brazil. Corumbataia britskii differs from its congeners by having a more depressed head profile (vs. a more rounded head profile in C. cuestae and C. tocantinensis), by having a more developed and conspicuous tuft of enlarged odontodes on the tip of the supraoccipital (vs. its reduced condition found in C. cuestae and C. tocantinensis), and by heaving a partially enclosed arrector fossae (vs. an almost completely enclosed arrector fossae in C. cuestae and C. tocantinensis). We use the Ogg-McCombe Hamiltonian together with the Dresselhaus and Rashba spin-splitting terms to find the g factor of conduction electrons in GaAs-(Ga,Al)As semiconductor quantum wells (QWS) (either symmetric or asymmetric) under a magnetic field applied along the growth direction. The combined effects of non-parabolicity, anisotropy and spin-splitting terms are taken into account. Theoretical results are given as functions of the QW width and compared with available experimental data and previous theoretical works. © 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We consider what a concern for social justice in terms of social inclusion might mean for teacher education, both practising and prospective, with particular reference to the use of information and communication technology (ICT) in mathematics education taking place at a borderland school. Our discussion proceeds through the following steps: (1) We explore what a borderland position might denote to address what social inclusion might mean. (2) We consider the significance of mathematics education and the use of ICT for processes of social inclusion. (3) We briefly refer to the Interlink Network, as many of our observations emerge as reflections on this project. (4) We present different issues that will be of particular importance with respect to teacher education if we want to establish a mathematics education for social inclusion. These issues concern moving away from the comfort zone, establishing networks, identifying new approaches, moving beyond prototypical research, and getting in contact. This brings us to (5) final considerations, where we return to the notion of social justice. © Springer Science+Business Media B.V. 2009.

We discuss dynamics of a vibro-impact system consisting of a cart with an piecewise-linear restoring force, which vibrates under driving by a source with limited power supply. From the point of view of dynamical systems, vibro-impact systems exhibit a rich variety of phenomena, particularly chaotic motion. In our analyzes, we use bifurcation diagrams, basins of attractions, identifying several non-linear phenomena, such as chaotic regimes, crises, intermittent mechanisms, and coexistence of attractors with complex basins of attraction. © 2009 by ASME.
