Considering the importance of the proper detection of bubbles in financial markets for policymakers and market agents, we used two techniques described in Diba and Grossman (1988b) and in Phillips, Shi, and Yu (2015) to detect periods of exuberance in the recent history of the Brazillian stock market. First, a simple cointegration test is applied. Secondly, we conducted several augmented, right-tailed Dickey-Fuller tests on rolling windows of data to determine the point in which there’s a structural break and the series loses its stationarity.

A recent development of the Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) technique is the emergence of MCMC samplers that allow transitions between different models. Such samplers make possible a range of computational tasks involving models, including model selection, model evaluation, model averaging and hypothesis testing. An example of this type of sampler is the reversible jump MCMC sampler, which is a generalization of the Metropolis-Hastings algorithm. Here, we present a new MCMC sampler of this type. The new sampler is a generalization of the Gibbs sampler, but somewhat surprisingly, it also turns out to encompass as particular cases all of the well-known MCMC samplers, including those of Metropolis, Barker, and Hastings. Moreover, the new sampler generalizes the reversible jump MCMC. It therefore appears to be a very general framework for MCMC sampling. This paper describes the new sampler and illustrates its use in three applications in Computational Biology, specifically determination of consensus sequences, phylogenetic inference and delineation of isochores via multiple change-point analysis.

Objective: Sertraline's efficacy and tolerability in treating generalized anxiety disorder were evaluated. Method: Adult outpatients with DSM-IV generalized anxiety disorder and a total score of 18 or higher on the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale were eligible. After a 1-week single-blind placebo lead-in, patients were randomly assigned to 12 weeks of double-blind treatment with placebo (N=188, mean baseline anxiety score=25) or flexible doses (50-150 mg/day) of sertraline (N=182, mean anxiety score=25). The primary outcome measure was baseline-to-endpoint change in the Hamilton anxiety scale total score. A secondary efficacy measure was the Clinical Global Impression (CGI) improvement score; response was defined as a score of 2 or less. Results: Sertraline patients had significantly greater improvement than placebo patients on all efficacy measures at week 4. Analysis of covariance of the intent-to-treat group at endpoint (with the last observation carried forward) showed a significant difference in the decrease from baseline of the least-square mean total score on the Hamilton anxiety scale between sertraline (mean=11.7) and placebo (mean=8.0). Significantly greater endpoint improvement with sertraline than placebo was obtained for mean scores on the Hamilton anxiety scale psychic factor (6.7 versus 4.1) and somatic factor (5.0 versus 3.9). The rate of responders, based on CGI improvement and last observation carried forward, was significantly higher for sertraline (63%) than placebo (37%). Sertraline was well tolerated; 8% of patients versus 10% for placebo dropped out because of adverse events. Conclusions: Sertraline appears to be efficacious and well tolerated in the treatment of generalized anxiety disorder.

The use of sirolimus as an alternative to calcineurin antagonists has enabled the continuation of immunosuppression in patients with renal impairment with preservation of kidney function. Sirolimus is generally well tolerated, with the main causes of cessation of therapy related to its effect on blood lipid profile as well as leukopenia and thrombocytopenia. We report a case of a debilitating ulcerating maculopapular rash necessitating cessation of the drug in a liver transplantation patient. A 56-year-old Caucasian liver transplantation patient presented with a diffuse, debilitating rash attributed to sirolimus use. This ultimately necessitated cessation of the immunosuppressant with subsequent resolution of her symptoms. From a review of the current literature, this is a highly unusual adverse reaction to sirolimus.

The generalized secant hyperbolic distribution (GSHD) proposed in Vaughan (2002) includes a wide range of unimodal symmetric distributions, with the Cauchy and uniform distributions being the limiting cases, and the logistic and hyperbolic secant distributions being special cases. The current article derives an asymptotically efficient rank estimator of the location parameter of the GSHD and suggests the corresponding one- and two-sample optimal rank tests. The rank estimator derived is compared to the modified MLE of location proposed in Vaughan (2002). By combining these two estimators, a computationally attractive method for constructing an exact confidence interval of the location parameter is developed. The statistical procedures introduced in the current article are illustrated by examples.

Equilibrium adsorption and desorption in mesoporous adsorbents is considered on the basis of rigorous thermodynamic analysis, in which the curvature-dependent solid-fluid potential and the compressibility of the adsorbed phase are accounted for. The compressibility of the adsorbed phase is considered for the first time in the literature in the framework of a rigorous thermodynamic approach. Our model is a further development of continuum thermodynamic approaches proposed by Derjaguin and Broekhoff and de Boer, and it is based on a reference isotherm of a non-porous material having the same chemical structure as that of the pore wall. In this improved thermodynamic model, we incorporated a prescription for transforming the solid-fluid potential exerted by the flat reference surface to the potential inside cylindrical and spherical pores. We relax the assumption that the adsorbed film density is constant and equal to that of the saturated liquid. Instead, the density of the adsorbed fluid is allowed to vary over the adsorbed film thickness and is calculated by an equation of state. As a result, the model is capable to describe the adsorption-desorption reversibility in cylindrical pores having diameter less than 2 nm. The generalized thermodynamic model may be applied to the pore size characterization of mesoporous materials instead of much more time-consuming molecular approaches. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. Standard factorial designs sometimes may be inadequate for experiments that aim to estimate a generalized linear model, for example, for describing a binary response in terms of several variables. A method is proposed for finding exact designs for such experiments that uses a criterion allowing for uncertainty in the link function, the linear predictor, or the model parameters, together with a design search. Designs are assessed and compared by simulation of the distribution of efficiencies relative to locally optimal designs over a space of possible models. Exact designs are investigated for two applications, and their advantages over factorial and central composite designs are demonstrated.

We study a generalized Hubbard model on the two-leg ladder at zero temperature, focusing on a parameter region with staggered flux (SF)/d-density wave (DDW) order. To guide our numerical calculations, we first investigate the location of a SF/DDW phase in the phase diagram of the half-filled weakly interacting ladder using a perturbative renormalization group (RG) and bosonization approach. For hole doping 6 away from half-filling, finite-system density-matrix renormalizationgroup (DMRG) calculations are used to study ladders with up to 200 rungs for intermediate-strength interactions. In the doped SF/DDW phase, the staggered rung current and the rung electron density both show periodic spatial oscillations, with characteristic wavelengths 2/delta and 1/delta, respectively, corresponding to ordering wavevectors 2k(F) and 4k(F) for the currents and densities, where 2k(F) = pi(1 - delta). The density minima are located at the anti-phase domain walls of the staggered current. For sufficiently large dopings, SF/DDW order is suppressed. The rung density modulation also exists in neighboring phases where currents decay exponentially. We show that most of the DMRG results can be qualitatively understood from weak-coupling RG/bosonization arguments. However, while these arguments seem to suggest a crossover from non-decaying correlations to power-law decay at a length scale of order 1/delta, the DMRG results are consistent with a true long-range order scenario for the currents and densities. Eukaryotic genomes display segmental patterns of variation in various properties, including GC content and degree of evolutionary conservation. DNA segmentation algorithms are aimed at identifying statistically significant boundaries between such segments. Such algorithms may provide a means of discovering new classes of functional elements in eukaryotic genomes. This paper presents a model and an algorithm for Bayesian DNA segmentation and considers the feasibility of using it to segment whole eukaryotic genomes. The algorithm is tested on a range of simulated and real DNA sequences, and the following conclusions are drawn. Firstly, the algorithm correctly identifies non-segmented sequence, and can thus be used to reject the null hypothesis of uniformity in the property of interest. Secondly, estimates of the number and locations of change-points produced by the algorithm are robust to variations in algorithm parameters and initial starting conditions and correspond to real features in the data. Thirdly, the algorithm is successfully used to segment human chromosome 1 according to GC content, thus demonstrating the feasibility of Bayesian segmentation of eukaryotic genomes. We develop criteria sufficient to enable detection of macroscopic coherence where there are not just two macroscopically distinct outcomes for a pointer measurement, but rather a spread of outcomes over a macroscopic range. The criteria provide a means to distinguish a macroscopic quantum description from a microscopic one based on mixtures of microscopic superpositions of pointer-measurement eigenstates. The criteria are applied to Gaussian-squeezed and spin-entangled states.

Exercise brachial blood pressure ( BP) predicts mortality, but because of wave reflection, central ( ascending aortic) pressure differs from brachial pressure. Exercise central BP may be clinically important, and a noninvasive means to derive it would be useful. The purpose of this study was to test the validity of a noninvasive technique to derive exercise central BP. Ascending aortic pressure waveforms were recorded using a micromanometer-tipped 6F Millar catheter in 30 patients (56 +/- 9 years; 21 men) undergoing diagnostic coronary angiography. Simultaneous recordings of the derived central pressure waveform were acquired using servocontrolled radial tonometry at rest and during supine cycling. Pulse wave analysis of the direct and derived pressure signals was performed offline (SphygmoCor 7.01). From rest to exercise, mean arterial pressure and heart rate were increased by 20 +/- 10 mm Hg and 15 +/- 7 bpm, respectively, and central systolic BP ranged from 77 to 229 mm Hg. There was good agreement and high correlation between invasive and noninvasive techniques with a mean difference (+/- SD) for central systolic BP of -1.3 +/- 3.2 mm Hg at rest and -4.7 +/- 3.3 mm Hg at peak exercise ( for both r=0.995; P < 0.001). Conversely, systolic BP was significantly higher peripherally than centrally at rest (155 +/- 33 versus 138 +/- 32mm Hg; mean difference, -16.3 +/- 9.4mm Hg) and during exercise (180 +/- 34 versus 164 +/- 33 mm Hg; mean difference, -15.5 +/- 10.4 mm Hg; for both P < 0.001). True myocardial afterload is not reliably estimated by peripheral systolic BP. Radial tonometry and pulse wave analysis is an accurate technique for the noninvasive determination of central BP at rest and during exercise.
