Osteosarcoma is a common primary malignant tumor in long bones; it generally occurs in young adults. It is considered infrequent in the head and neck regions, where it is usually associated with poor outcomes and rates of survival. From a histopathologic point of view, osteosarcomas are commonly classified as osteoblastic, chondroblastic, or fibroblastic, although several unusual microscopic subtypes have also been reported. The purpose of this article was to present a case report of a maxillary chondroblastic osteosarcoma involving the maxillary sinus and the maxilla of a young woman who was diagnosed during early postorthodontic treatment follow-up. Treatment, prosthetic rehabilitation, and follow-up details are provided. Most importantly, this patient shows the importance of complete and systematic oral examinations during any routine dental treatment. (Am J Orthod Dentofacial Orthop 2011;139:845-8)

This study investigated the importance of androgen on responses to alpha and beta (norepinephrine) and alpha(1) (phenylephrine and methoxamine) agonists in vasa deferentia isolated from adult, immature, cryptorchid, and castrated rats submitted to swimming-induced acute stress. The participation of adrenergic nervous terminals was also investigated. Acute stress was shown to induce a significant subsensitivity to norepinephrine only in vas deferens from adult rats with normal levels of androgens. In addition, sympathetic denervation of the vas deferens prevented the appearance of subsensitivity. Subsensitivity was not seen when the experiments were carried out using phenylephrine and methoxamine. This shows that subsensitivity to norepinephrine in this acute stress situation may depend on other factors such as neuronal uptake, but not on alpha(1)-adrenoceptor response. Thus, when animals are exposed to acute stressogenic situations, this subsensitivity requires physiological levels of androgens to establish, and may also be involved in body homeostasis. This study aimed to analyze the composition and the ecological attributes of the zooplankton assemblages (Cladocera and Copepoda), in four marginal lagoons and in the main channel of Rosana Reservoir (SE Brazil). Fieldwork was carried out in September and November/2004 and January, March, May and August/2005. A total of 72 taxa were identifed (55 cladocerans and 17 copepods). Seasonally, a signifcant higher richness was observed during the rainy period. The lateral lagoons, compared to the reservoir, and the rainy period, compared to the dry one, showed higher zooplankton abundance. Copepods exhibited higher abundance than cladocerans. Among the copepods, there was a higher abundance of nauppli forms in the lateral lagoons and in the dry period. Calanoida dominated in relation to Cyclopoida. The most numerous cladoceran family was Bosminidae, followed by Daphniidae. The results showed that the zooplankton assemblages are infuenced by the meteorological factors, by some important nutrients (indirectly) and by the phytoplankton abundance. This pattern indicated that in the lateral lagoon system the communities are controlled by bottom-up mechanisms. The results validate the hypotheses that lateral lagoons have a prominent ecological role for the zooplankton of Rosana Reservoir and also evidenced the main driving forces infuencing the composition and ecological attributes of the assemblages. The incorporation of the reservoir lateral lagoons in regional environmental programs should be a target strategy for the conservation of the aquatic biota, mitigating the negative impact of the dam.

The reptilian heart consists of a thick inner spongy myocardium that derives its oxygen and nutrient supply directly from the blood within the ventricular cavity, which is surrounded by a thin outer compact layer supplied by coronary arteries. The functional importance of these coronary arteries remains unknown. In the present study we investigate the effects of permanent coronary artery occlusion in the South American rattlesnake (Crotalus durissus) on the ability to maintain heart rate and blood pressure at rest and during short term activity. We used colored silicone rubber (Microfil) to identify the coronary artery distribution and interarterial anastomoses. The coronary circulation was occluded and the snakes were then kept for 4 days at 30 degrees C. Microfil injections verified that virtually all coronary arteries had successfully been occluded, but also made visible an extensive coronary supply to the outer compact layer in untreated snakes. Electrocardiogram (ECG), blood pressure (P(sys)) and heart rate (f(H)) were measured at rest and during enforced activity at day 1 and 4. Four days after occlusion of the coronary circulation, the snakes could still maintain a P(sys) and f(H) of 5.2 +/- 0.2 kPa and 58.2 +/- 2.2 beats min(-1), respectively, during activity and the ECG was not affected. This was not different from sham-operated snakes. Thus, while the outer compact layer of the rattlesnake heart clearly has an extensive coronary supply, rattlesnakes sustain a high blood pressure and heart rate during activity without coronary artery blood supply.

Origin and importance. Acerola, or Malpighia emarginata D. C., is native to the Caribbean islands, Central America and the Amazonian region. More recently, it has been introduced in subtropical areas (Asia, India and South America). The vitamin C produced by acerola is better absorbed by the human organism than synthetic ascorbic acid. Exportation of acerola crops is a potential alternative source of income in agricultural businesses. In Brazil, the commercial farming of acerola is quite recent. Climatic conditions. Acerola is a rustic plant. It can resist temperatures close to 0 degrees C, but it is well adapted to temperatures around 26 degrees C with rainfall between (1200 and 1600) mm per year. Fruit characteristics. Acerola fruit is drupaceous, whose form can vary from round to conic. When ripe, it can be red, purple or yellow. The fruit weight varies between (3 and 16) g. Maturation. Acerola fruit presents fast metabolic activity and its maturation occurs rapidly. When commercialised in ambient conditions, it requires fast transportation or the use of refrigerated containers to retard its respiration and metabolism partially. Production and productivity. Flowering and fruiting are typically in cycles associated with rain. Usually, they take place in 25-day cycles, up to 8 times per year. The plant can be propagated by cuttings, grafting or seedlings. Harvest. Fruits produced for markets needs to be harvested at its optimal maturation stage. For distant markets, they need to be packed in boxes and piled up in low layers; transportation should be done in refrigerated trucks in relatively high humid conditions. Biochemical constituents. Acerola is the most important natural source of vitamin C [(1000 to 4500) mg.100(-1) g of pulp], but it is also rich in pectin and pectolytic enzymes, carotenoids, plant fibre, vitamin B, thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, proteins and mineral salts. It has also shown active anti-fungal properties. Products and market. Acerola is used in the production of juice, soft drinks, gums and liqueurs. The USA and Europe are great potential markets. In Europe, acerola extracts are used to enrich pear or apple juices. In the USA, they are used in the pharmaceutical industry. Conclusions. The demand for acerola has increased significantly in recent years because of the relevance of vitamin C in human health, coupled with the use of ascorbic acid as an antioxidant in food and feed. Acerola fruit contains other significant components, which are likely to lead to a further increase in its production and trade all over the world.

A família perdeu seguimento médico.
