Background: Automated measurement of LV function could extend the clinical utility of echo by less expert readers. We sought to define normal ranges of global 2D strain (2DS) and strain-rate (SR) in an international, multicenter study of healthy subjects, and to assess the determinants of variation. Methods: SR and 2DS were measured in 18 myocardial segts in both apical and short axis views of 227 normal subjects (38% men, 48±14y) with no cardiac history, risk factors or drug therapy. The association of age and resting hemodynamics with global strain indices was sought using multiple regression. Differences in variance were expressed as F values. Ciguatera is a global disease caused by the consumption of certain warm-water fish that have accumulated orally effective levels of sodium channel activator toxins (ciguatoxins) through the marine food chain. Symptoms of ciguatera arising from the consumption of ciguateric fish include a range of gastrointestinal, neurological and cardiovascular disturbances. This review examines progress in our understanding of ciguatera from an Australian perspective, especially the laboratory-based research into the problem that was initiated by the late "Bob" Endean at the University of Queensland.

We sought to determine the relative impact of myocardial scar and viability on post-infarct left ventricular (LV) remodeling in medically-treated patients with LV dysfunction. Forty patients with chronic ischemic heart disease (age 64±9, EF 40±11%) underwent rest-redistribution Tl201 SPECT (scar = 50% transmural extent), A global index of scarring for each patient (CMR scar score) was calculated as the sum of transmural extent scores in all segts. LV end diastolic volumes (LVEDV) and LV end systolic volumes (LVESV) were measured by real-time threedimensional echo at baseline and median of 12 months follow-up. There was a significant positive correlation between change in LVEDV with number of scar segts by all three imaging techniques (LVEDV: SPECT scar, r = 0.62, p < 0.001; DbE scar, r = 0.57, p < 0.001; CMR scar, r = 0.52, p < 0.001) but change in LV volumes did not the correlate with number of viable segments. ROC curve analysis showed that remodeling (LVEDV> 15%) was predicted bySPECTscars(AUC= 0.79),DbEscars(AUC= 0.76),CMR scars (AUC= 0.70), and CMR scar score (AUC 0.72). Purpose: To develop a model for the global performance measurement of intensive care units (ICUs) and to apply that model to compare the services for quality improvement. Materials and Methods: Analytic hierarchy process, a multiple-attribute decision-making technique, is used in this study to evolve such a model. The steps consisted of identifying the critical success factors for the best performance of an ICU, identifying subfactors that influence the critical factors, comparing them pairwise, deriving their relative importance and ratings, and calculating the cumulative performance according to the attributes of a given ICU. Every step in the model was derived by group discussions, brainstorming, and consensus among intensivists. Results: The model was applied to 3 ICUs, 1 each in Barbados, Trinidad, and India in tertiary care teaching hospitals of similar setting. The cumulative performance rating of the Barbados ICU was 1.17 when compared with that of Trinidad and Indian ICU, which were 0.82 and 0.75, respectively, showing that the Trinidad and Indian ICUs performed 70% and 64% with respect to Barbados ICU. The model also enabled identifying specific areas where the ICUs did not perform well, which helped to improvise those areas. This paper draws on the knowledge-base implicit in ex post evaluations of publicly funded R&D and other related conceptual and empirical studies to suggest a framework for the ex ante evaluation of the regional benefits from R&D projects. The framework developed comprises two main elements: an inventory of the global private and social benefits which might result from any R&D project; and, an assessment of the share of these global benefits which might accrue to a host region, taking into account the characteristics of the R&D project and the region's innovation system. The inventory of global benefits separately identifies private and social benefits and distinguishes between increments to public and private knowledge stocks, benefits to R&D productivity and benefits from commercialisation. Potential market and 'pure' knowledge spillovers are also considered separately. The paper concludes with the application of the framework to two illustrative case studies. © 2003 Elsevier B.V. J Neurophysiol 91:2884-2896] to simultaneously quantify synaptic inhibitory and excitatory synaptic noise, together with postsynaptic excitability, in rat entorhinal cortical neurons in vitro. The results suggest that this is a viable and useful approach to the study of the function of synaptic noise in cortical networks. © 2007 IBRO.

This paper describes research that has sought to create a structured and integrated methodology that guides manufacturers through the decision of strategic positioning within global supply chains. The position of a company is concerned with deciding a boundary and configuration of internal and external business activities to the company and is directly related to initiatives such as outsourcing, make or buy, and offshoring. This paper provides an in-depth description of this concept, describes work carried out to form a methodology for strategic positioning within the global supply chain, and presents the details of the methodology. This research has made a significant contribution to the knowledge on how manufacturing companies can form a strategic positioning within global supply chains.

The present paper examines the issue of whether interpersonal relationships are critical for global marketing of industrial products. The fields of relationship marketing, IMP group research, sales research, and network theory have stressed the importance of interpersonal relationships in the business-to-business or industrial marketing context. In contrast to this emphasis on interpersonal relationships, we argue that industrial firms can both conceive and enhance marketing strategies based on developing high quality and consistent processes, products, services or outcomes (consistent processes and outcomes). Such strategies are especially important given the fact that developing interpersonal relationships is expensive due to their reliance on frequent and/or face-to-face communications. In this paper, we examine industry and country contexts that lead to the choice of alternative industrial product marketing strategies and highlight some future research directions and managerial implications.
