PURPOSE. To establish the relationship between upper eyelid saccades and upper eyelid pursuit movements. METHODS. Upper eyelid saccades and periodic sinusoidal upper eyelid pursuit movements were recorded in a sample of controls and patients with Graves upper eyelid retraction. A video-computerized system was used to register both types of movements that accompanied 60 of eye rotation across the upper and lower hemifields. The forced harmonic oscillator model was used to fit saccadic and pursuit movements. RESULTS. Mean mid-pupil eyelid distance for the Graves patients (6.6 +/- 1.1 mm) was significantly higher than for the controls (4.6 +/- 0.8 mm; t = 7.18; P < 0.00001). Despite the difference in the upper eyelid resting position, saccades and pursuit eyelid movements of both groups were extremely well fitted by underdamped solutions and steady forced solutions of the harmonic oscillator model, respectively. For the controls, the amplitude of the pursuit movements was well correlated with the upward and downward saccades. The amplitude of the eyelid movements of the Graves patients (saccades and pursuit) was significantly reduced compared with that of the controls. CONCLUSIONS. Saccadic and pursuit movements of the upper eyelid can be described by the harmonic oscillator model. In healthy subjects and Graves patients, the amplitude of pursuit lid movements is correlated to the saccade amplitude. Pursuit eyelid movements are more difficult to register than saccades, and their measurements do not allow clear separation of the relaxation and contraction properties of the upper eyelid retractors.

Background. Respiratory symptoms associated with smoking habit seem to be age dependent. However, there are few reports about the effect of tobacco in young populations. The objective of this study was to analyze the effect of smoking on respiratory symptoms and lung function in 23- to 25-year-old adults in Brazil. This study had a cross-sectional design and included 2063 young people in the city of Ribeirao Preto, Sao Paulo State. Methods: Subjects completed a questionnaire used by the European Community Respiratory Health Survey and underwent spirometry and bronchial challenge test with methacholine. Multiple logistic regression analysis and multiple linear regression analysis were carried out to assess the association between smoking and respiratory symptoms, bronchial hyperresponsiveness, forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1), and forced vital capacity (FVC), adjusted for confounding variables. Results: Prevalence of smoking habit was 17.2% with consumption (median) of 10 cigarettes per day (interquartile range 3-20). There was a significant association between smoking and respiratory symptoms. Smoking was associated to wheezing with odds ratio (95%Cl) of 6.11 (4.03-9.28) among those smoking :10 cigarettes per day and 3.36 (2.11-5.37) among those smoking <10 cigarettes per day. Associations were found for other respiratory symptoms. Smoking was associated with lower FEV1/FVC ratio. No association was detected between smoking and FEV1 or bronchial hyperresponsiveness. Conclusions: These findings highlight the early health consequences of smoking among young adults. These results prompt the necessity to elaborate urgent programs to reduce tobacco habit in young populations.

Objective: The present study has investigated the effect of blockade of nitric oxide synthesis on cardiovascular autonomic adaptations induced by aerobic physical training using different approaches: 1) double blockade with methylatropine and propranolol; 2) systolic arterial pressure (SAP) and heart rate variability (HRV) by means of spectral analysis; and 3) baroreflex sensitivity. Methods: Male Wistar rats were divided into four groups: sedentary rats (SR); sedentary rats treated with N(omega)-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME) for one week (SRL); rats trained for eight weeks (TR); and rats trained for eight weeks and treated with L-NAME in the last week (TRL). Results: Hypertension and tachycardia were observed in SRL group. Previous physical training attenuated the hypertension in L-NAME-treated rats. Bradycardia was seen in TR and TRL groups, although such a condition was more prominent in the latter. All trained rats had lower intrinsic heart rates. Pharmacological evaluation of cardiac autonomic tonus showed sympathetic predominance in SRL group, differently than other groups. Spectral analysis of HRV showed smaller low frequency oscillations (LF: 0.2-0.75 Hz) in SRL group compared to other groups. Rats treated with L-NAME presented greater LF oscillations in the SAP compared to non-treated rats, but oscillations were found to be smaller in TRL group. Nitric oxide synthesis inhibition with L-NAME reduced the baroreflex sensitivity in sedentary and trained animals. Conclusion: Our results showed that nitric oxide synthesis blockade impaired the cardiovascular autonomic adaptations induced by previous aerobic physical training in rats that might be, at least in part, ascribed to a decreased baroreflex sensitivity. We have compared the effects of two types of physical training on the cardiac autonomic control in ovariectomized and sham-operated rats according to different approaches: double autonomic blockade (DAB) with methylatropine and propranolol; baroreflex sensibility (BRS) and spectral analysis of heart rate variability (HRV). Wistar female rats (+/- 250 g) were divided into two groups: sham-operated and ovariectomized. Each group was subdivided into three subgroups: sedentary rats, rats submitted to aerobic trained and rats submitted to resistance training. Ovariectomy did not change arterial pressure, basal heart rate (HR), DAB and BRS responses, but interfered with HRV by reducing the low-frequency oscillations (LF = 0.20-0.75 Hz) in relation to sedentary sham-operated rats. The DAB showed that both types of training promoted an increase in the predominance of vagal tonus in sham-operated rats, but HR variations due to methylatropine were decreased in the resistance trained rats compared to sedentary rats. Evaluation of BRS showed that resistance training for sham-operated and ovariectomized rats reduced the tachycardic responses in relation to aerobic training. Evaluation of HRV in trained rats showed that aerobic training reduced LF oscillations in sham-operated rats, whereas resistance training had a contrary effect. In the ovariectomized rats, aerobic training increased high frequency oscillations (HF = 0.75-2.5 Hz), whereas resistance training produced no effect. In sham-operated rats, both types of training increased the vagal autonomic tonus, but resistance training reduced HF oscillations and BRS as well. In turn, both types of training had similar results in ovariectomized rats, except for HRV, as aerobic training promoted an increase in HF oscillations. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Objective: To investigate the effect of aerobic physical training on cardiovascular autonomic control in ovariectomized rats using different approaches. Design: Female Wistar rats were divided into four groups: sedentary sham rats (group SSR), trained sham rats (group TSR), sedentary ovariectomized rats (group SOR), and trained ovariectomized rats (group TOR). Animals from the trained groups were submitted to a physical training protocol (swimming) for 12 weeks. Results: Pharmacological evaluation showed that animals from group TSR had an increase in their cardiac vagal tonus compared with the animals from groups SSR and SOR. The analysis of heart rate variability (HRV) showed that groups TSR and SOR had fewer low-frequency oscillations (0.20-0.75 Hz) compared with groups SSR and TOR. When groups TSR and SOR were compared, the former was found to have fewer oscillations. With regard to high-frequency oscillations (0.75-2.5 Hz), group SSR had a reduction compared with the other groups, whereas group TSR had the greatest oscillation compared with groups SOR and TOR, with all values expressed in normalized units. Analysis of HRV was performed after pharmacological blockade, and low-frequency oscillations were found to be predominantly sympathetic in sedentary animals, whereas there was no predominance in trained animals. Conclusion: Ovariectomy did not change the tonic autonomic control of the heart and, in addition, reduced the participation of sympathetic component in cardiac modulation. Physical training, on the other hand, increased the participation of parasympathetic modulation on the HRV, including ovariectomized rats.

We have investigated the ovariectomy effects on the cardiovascular autonomic adaptations induced by aerobic physical training and the role played by nitric oxide (NO). Female Wistar rats (n =70) were divided into five groups: Sedentary Sham (SS): Trained Sham (TS); Trained Hypertensive Sham treated with N(C)-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME) (THS): Trained Ovariectomized (TO); and Trained Hypertensive Ovariectomized treated with L-NAME (THO). Trained groups were submitted to a physical training during 10 weeks. The cardiovascular autonomic control was investigated in all groups using different approaches: 1) pharmacological evaluation of autonomic tonus with methylatropine and propranolol; 2) analysis of heart rate (HR) and systolic arterial pressure (AP) variability; 3) spontaneous baroreflex sensitivity (BRS) evaluation. Hypertension was observed in THS and THO groups. Pharmacological analysis showed that TS group had increased predominance of autonomic vagal tonus compared to SS group. HR and intrinsic HR were found to be reduced in all trained animals. TS group, compared to other groups, showed a reduction in LF oscillations (LF=0.2-0.75 Hz) of pulse interval in both absolute and normalized units as well as an increase in HF oscillations (HF=0.75-2.50 Hz) in normalized unit. FIRS analysis showed that alpha-index was different between all groups. TS group presented the greatest value, followed by the TO, SS. THO and THS groups. Ovariectomy has negative effects on cardiac autonomic modulation in trained rats, which is characterized by an increase in the sympathetic autonomic modulation. These negative effects suggest NO deficiency. In contrast, the ovariectomy seems to have no effect on AP variability. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Oxidative stress disturbances have been reported in depressed patients and in animals submitted to stress. Recent evidence suggests that antidepressants may have antioxidant properties. However, the therapeutic potential of antioxidants as antidepressant drugs has not been systematically investigated. Therefore, this study tested the hypothesis that N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC), a cysteine prodrug with powerful antioxidant activity, would possess anti depressant-like properties in the forced swimming test. Male Wistar rats were subjected to 15 min of forced swimming and immediately afterward, 5, and 23 h later received intraperitoneal injections of NAC (5, 15, 50, 150, and 250 mg/kg), imipramine, 0 5 mg/kg) or vehicle. One hour later they were submitted to the 5 min test swimming session, where immobility time was recorded. Independent groups of animals received the same treatments and their exploratory activity was measured in an open arena for 5 min. NAC (at the doses of 15, 50, and 150 mg/kg) and imipramine induced a significant decrease in immobility time without changing exploratory behavior measured in an open arena. This study was conducted in one kidney, one clip (1K1C) Goldblatt hypertensive rats to evaluate vascular and cardiac autonomic control using different approaches: 1) evaluation of the autonomic modulation of heart rate (HR) and systolic arterial pressure (SAP) by means of autoregressive power spectral analysis 2) assessment of the cardiac baroreflex sensitivity; and 3) double blockade with methylatropine and propranolol. The 1K1C group developed hypertension and tachycardia. The 1K1C group also presented reduction in variance as well as in LF (0.23 +/- 0.1 vs. 1.32 +/- 0.2 ms(2)) and HF (6.6 +/- 0.49 vs. 15.1 +/- 0.61 ms(2)) oscillations of pulse interval. Autoregressive spectral analysis of SAP showed that 1K1C rats had an increase in variance and LF band (13.3 +/- 2.7 vs. 7.4 +/- 1.01 mmHg(2)) in comparison with the sham group. The baroreflex gain was attenuated in the hypertensive 1K1C (- 1.83 +/- 0.05 bpm/mmHg) rats in comparison with normotensive sham (-3.23 +/- 0.06 bpm/MmHg) rats. The autonomic blockade caused an increase in the intrinsic HR and sympathetic predominance on the basal HR of 1K1C rats. Overall, these data indicate that the tachycardia observed in the 1K1C group may be attributed to intrinsic cardiac mechanisms (increased intrinsic heart rate) and to a shift in the sympathovagal balance towards cardiac sympathetic over-activity and vagal suppression associated to depressed baroreflex sensitivity. Finally, the increase in the LF components of SAP also suggests an increase in sympathetic activity to peripheral vessels. (c) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Ethnopharmacological relevance: The essential oil (EO) from Cymbopogon citratus (DC) Stapf is reported to have a wide range of biological activities and is widely used in traditional medicine as an infusion or decoction. However, despite this widely use, there are few controlled studies confirming its biological activity in central nervous system. Materials and methods: The anxiolytic-like activity of the EO was investigated in light/dark box (LDB) and marble-burying test (MBT) and the antidepressant activity was investigated in forced-swimming test (FST) in mice. Flumazenil, a competitive antagonist of benzodiazepine binding and the selective 5-HT(1A) receptor antagonist WAY100635 was used in experimental procedures to determine the action mechanism of EO. To exclude any false positive results in experimental procedures, mice were submitted to the rota-rod test. We also quantified some neurotransmitters at specific brain regions after EO oral acute treatment. Results: The present work found anxiolytic-like activity of the EO at the dose of 10 mg/kg in a LDB. Flumazenil, but not WAY100635, was able to reverse the effect of the EO in the LOB, indicating that the EO activity occurs via the GABA(A) receptor-benzodiazepine complex. Only at higher doses did the EO potentiate diethyl-ether-induced sleeping time in mice. In the FST and MBT, EO showed no effect. Finally, the increase in time spent in the light chamber, demonstrated by concomitant treatment with ineffective doses of diazepam (DZP) and the EO, revealed a synergistic effect of the two compounds. The lack of activity after long-term treatment in the LDB test might be related to tolerance induction, even in the DZP-treated group. Furthermore, there were no significant differences between groups after either acute or repeated treatments with the EO in the rota-rod test. Neurochemical evaluation showed no amendments in neurotransmitter levels evaluated in cortex, striatum, pons, and hypothalamus. Conclusions: The results corroborate the use of Cymbopogon citratus in folk medicine and suggest that the anxiolytic-like effect of its EO is mediated by the GABA(A) receptor-benzodiazepine complex. The purpose of this study was to evaluate histologically the root surfaces of teeth submitted to orthodontic and surgical extrusion procedures in a dog model. Eighteen adult male dogs, divided into six groups of three dogs each, were used in the study Each animal underwent two procedures: rapid orthodontic extrusion and surgical extrusion of the maxillary lateral incisors. The animals were sacrificed to produce samples at 7, 14, 45, 90, 120, and 180 days after surgery for assessment of cross sections of the coronal, medial, and apical thirds of the treated teeth. At early time points, some active surface and inflammatory resorption was observed exclusively in the surgical extrusion group; however, samples collected at later times demonstrated functional repair of the resorption gaps in both groups. Ankylosis was observed as a minor event and was apparently of a transient nature in samples of the surgical extrusion group. The results demonstrate the importance of maintaining the periodontal ligament and cementum surface; both are vital for the prevention of root resorption. It may be postulated that orthodontic extrusion is more conservative and physiologic than surgical extrusion; however the results showed that function was restored in both groups. Objective: To evaluate soft tissue characteristics in individuals with cleft lip and palate and the degree of satisfaction of these individuals after rehabilitation. Setting: Hospital for Rehabilitation of Craniofacial Anomalies, Brazil. Patients: Forty-five individuals with repaired complete unilateral cleft lip and palate, aged 15 to 30 years. Interventions: One hundred thirty-five frontal facial photographs were obtained at rest and in natural and forced smile. Specialists in periodontics evaluated the soft tissue characteristics. Both patients and specialists evaluated the smiles and scored them as esthetically unpleasant, acceptable, or pleasant. Main Outcome Measures: Comparison of the cleft area with the contralateral region was performed for evaluation of soft tissue. The results of the degree of satisfaction with smile were expressed as percentages and means. The findings between patients and periodontists experienced or inexperienced with cleft care were compared. Results: Statistically significant differences were observed for alveolar process deficiency and absence of papilla in the esthetic area between groups (p < .05). Results show 84.4% of individuals considered their smile as esthetically pleasant. Specialists in periodontics of both groups scored the natural smile and forced smile as esthetically acceptable. There was a statistically significant difference in the mean of patients compared with both groups of specialists in periodontics (p < .05). Conclusions: Evaluation and knowledge of the soft tissue characteristics is extremely important for successful rehabilitation. The esthetic values and degree of patient satisfaction are essential for treatment success, since smile reconstruction should be esthetically pleasant to the patient.
A modified orthodontic protocol for advanced periodontal disease in Class II division 1 malocclusion

An interdisciplinary approach is often the best option for achieving a predictable outcome for an adult patient with complex clinical problems. This case report demonstrates the combined periodontal/orthodontic treatment for a 49-year-old woman presenting with a Class II Division 1 malocclusion with moderate maxillary anterior crowding, a 9-mm overjet, and moderate to severe bone loss as the main characteristics of the periodontal disease. The orthodontic treatment included 2 maxillary first premolar extractions through forced extrusion. Active orthodontic treatment was completed in 30 months. The treatment outcomes, including the periodontal condition, were stable 17 months after active orthodontic treatment. The advantages of this interdisciplinary approach are discussed. Periodontally compromised orthodontic patients can be satisfactorily treated, achieving most of the conventional orthodontic goals, if a combined orthodontic/periodontic approach is used. It has been hypothesized that the brain categorizes stressors and utilizes neural response pathways that vary in accordance with the assigned category. If this is true, stressors should elicit patterns of neuronal activation within the brain that are category-specific. Data from previous Immediate-early gene expression mapping studies have hinted that this is the case, but interstudy differences in methodology render conclusions tenuous. In the present study, immunolabelling for the expression of c-fos was used as a marker of neuronal activity elicited in the rat brain by haemorrhage, immune challenge, noise, restraint and forced swim. All stressors elicited c-fos expression in 25-30% of hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus corticotrophin-releasing-factor cells, suggesting that these stimuli were of comparable strength, at least with regard to their ability to activate the hypothalamic-pituitary-ad renal axis. In the amygdala, haemorrhage and immune challenge both elicited c-fos expression in a large number of neurons in the central nucleus of the amygdala, whereas noise, restraint and forced swim primarily elicited recruitment of cells within the medial nucleus of the amygdala. In the medulla, all stressors recruited similar numbers of noradrenergic (A1 and A2) and adrenergic (C1 and C2) cells. However, haemorrhage and immune challenge elicited c-fos expression In subpopulations of A1 and A2 noradrenergic cells that were significantly more rostral than those recruited by noise, restraint or forced swim. The present data support the suggestion that the brain recognizes at least two major categories of stressor, which we have referred to as 'physical' and 'psychological'. Moreover, the present data suggest that the neural activation footprint that is left in the brain by stressors can be used to determine the category to which they have been assigned by the brain.

Spontaneous and tone-evoked changes in light reflectance were recorded from primary auditory cortex (A1) of anesthetized cats (barbiturate induction, ketamine maintenance). Spontaneous 0.1-Hz oscillations of reflectance of 540- and 690-nm light were recorded in quiet. Stimulation with tone pips evoked localized reflectance decreases at 540 nm in 3/10 cats. The distribution of patches activated by tones of different frequencies reflected the known tonotopic organization of auditory cortex. Stimulus-evoked reflectance changes at 690 nm were observed in 9/10 cats but lacked stimulus-dependent topography. In two experiments, stimulus-evoked optical signals at 540 nm were compared with multiunit responses to the same stimuli recorded at multiple sites. A significant correlation (P < 0.05) between magnitude of reflectance decrease and multiunit response strength was evident in only one of five stimulus conditions in each experiment. There was no significant correlation when data were pooled across all stimulus conditions in either experiment. In one experiment, the spatial distribution of activated patches, evident in records of spontaneous activity at 540 nm, was similar to that of patches activated by tonal stimuli. These results suggest that local cerebral blood volume changes reflect the gross tonotopic organization of A1 but are not restricted to the sites of spiking neurons.

Poor nutritional status in patients with cystic fibrosis (CF) is associated with severe lung disease, and possible causative factors include inadequate intake, malabsorption, and increased energy requirements. Body cell mass (which can be quantified by measurement of total body potassium) provides an ideal standard for measurements of energy expenditure. The aim of this study was to compare resting energy expenditure (REE) in patients with CF with both predicted values and age-matched healthy children and to determine whether REE was related to either nutritional status or pulmonary function. REE was measured by indirect calorimetry and body cell mass by scanning with total body potassium in 30 patients with CF(12 male, mean age = 13.07 +/- 0.55 y) and 18 healthy children (six male, mean age = 12.56 +/- 1.25 y). Nutritional status was expressed as a percentage of predicted total body potassium; Lung function was measured in the CF group by spirometry and expressed as the percentage of predicted forced expiratory volume in 1 s. Mean REE was significantly increased in the patients with CF compared with healthy children (119.3 +/- 3.1% predicted versus 103.6 +/- 5% predicted, P < 0.001) and, using multiple regression techniques, REE for total body potassium was significantly increased in patients with CF (P = 0.0001). There was no relation between REE and nutritional status or pulmonary disease status in the CF group. In conclusion, REE is increased in children and adolescents with CF but is not directly related to nutritional status or pulmonary disease. Nutrition 2001;17:22-25. (C)Elsevier Science Inc. 2001.
