The present article reviews the relations between the EU and Russia in the past decade and shows the deterioration of the bilateral relations. The Putin´s Russia has become a very active geostrategic player, with a worrying behaviour, breaking balances in the international scene established since the end of the Cold War. Russia is a priority in the Foreign and Security Policy of the European Global Security Strategy, but has become also a clear competitor. This last aspect is not sufficiently underlined in the Strategy and thus the strategic framework is not clear. In parallel, it is not clear in the Strategy which are the tools the EU has to defend its neighbourhood when their independence, sovereignty or territorial defence may be put in question. This question goes beyond the support to the resilience of those neighbours.

In previous studies research has shown that generation y experience resistance from older generations represented in the labor market in USA. The resistance is due to differences between the generations. On the other hand some studies say that differences are more likely to come from other factors such as gender and which stage in life the individual is in. The purpose of this study is to describe how (women in) generation y is experiencing the cooperation with colleagues from other generations and if they considers that differences due to generations exist. The study will also try to determine if the respondents are aware of each generation’s characteristics. To fulfill the purpose of the study a qualitative method was chosen in the shape of a focus group. To be able to answer the purpose an interview guide was developed from previous studies. The guide was divided in three sections; scenarios, exercises and finally questions. The focus group resulted in a two-hour discussion between four individuals belonging to generation y. The result of the study showed that generation y in Falun, Sweden did identify some of the characteristics each generation had. Further did the respondents conform that resistance due to generational differences was a problem. To answer the purpose of the study generation y felt underestimated by the older generations and expressed a certain degree of hopelessness.

Purpose: To explore the effect of recombinant human erythropoietin (r-HuEPO) on apoptosis in rats after traumatic brain injury. Methods: A total of 48 traumatic brain-injured Sprague Dawley (SD) rats were obtained by improved Feeney’s traumatic brain injury model, and were randomly divided into four groups: normal salinetreated rats (control) and rats treated with r-HuEPO at doses of 1000 U/kg, 3000 U/kg and 5000 U/kg. Brain tissues were collected on the 7th day after trauma surgery. Apoptotic cells, and NF-kappa B (NFĸB)-, c-myc-, and Fas/Fasl-positive cells were identified in brain tissues by immunohistochemical assay. Results: After treatment with r-HuEPO (3000 and 5000 U/kg), expression of NF-κB and Fas/Fasl were significantly decreased (p < 0.05) compared to control rats, especially at the 5000 U/kg dose (p < 0.01). However, for c-myc, no significant difference was observed between r-HuEPO treatment and control groups (p > 0.05). Compared to the 1000 U/kg r-HuEPO group, Fas/Fasl expression levels were significantly lower in the 3000 and 5000 U/kg r-HuEPO groups (p < 0.05). Additionally, expression of NF-κB and Fasl in the 5000 U/kg r-HuEPO group was significantly lower than that in the 3000 U/kg r- HuEPO group (p < 0.05). Moreover, the number of apoptotic cells in the r-HuEPO group (5000 U/kg) was significantly lower than in the control group (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Thus, r-HuEPO may be beneficial for treating traumatic brain injury via inhibition of NFkappa B and Fas/Fasl expressions.

Purpose: To investigate the effect of Lycii fructus polysaccharides (LFPS) on ovulation failure. Methods: A rat model of ovulation failure was established by intragastric administration of hydroxyurea (300 mg/kg). Rats with ovulation failure then received LFPS via oral administration at doses of 100, 200, or 400 mg/kg. The body, uterus and ovary of each rat were weighed using electronic scales. The hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian (HPO) axis hormones, including estradiol (E2) level, follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) activity, and luteinizing hormone (LH) activity in the serum of each rat were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The levels of pro-apoptotic proteins (Fas, FasL, FADD, c-caspase-8, c-caspase-10, c-caspase-3, c-caspase-6, and c-caspase-7) in the ovarian tissue of each rat were detected by western blot. Results: Hydroxyurea reduced significantly (p < 0.01) uterus and ovary indices (uterus or ovary weight/body weight) (0.119 and 0.026 %), E2 level (3.42 pmol/L), and FSH and LH activities (2.28 and 2.76 U/L), compared with those in the normal group (0.169 and 0.039 %; 6.72 pmol/L; 2.76 and 3.75 U/L). Hydroxyurea increased significantly (p < 0.01) the levels of the above-mentioned pro-apoptotic proteins relative to those in the normal group. LFPS (100, 200, or 400 mg/kg) reversed significantly (p < 0.05 or 0.01) the effect of hydroxyurea on all of the above indices. Conclusion: LFPS exhibits a protective effect on hydroxyurea-induced ovulation failure by regulating the HPO axis hormones and death receptor-mediated apoptotic pathway.

Piracanjuba (Brycon orbignyanus) is a Brazilian migratory fast-growing omnivore, very appreciated as a sport fish, which is threatened to extinction in Southern Brazil due to stock over exploitation and dam building. Therefore, efforts have been made to raise this fish in captivity for reintroduction and aquaculture purposes. In the present study, the effects of different dietary protein and lipid concentrations on piracanjuba fingerlings growth performance, feed utilization, body composition, hepatosomatic index (HSI) and activity of the lipogenic enzymes fatty acid synthetase (FAS), glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) and malic enzyme (ME) were investigated using a 2 x 3 factorial experiment. Six casein-gelatin based diets were prepared combining two protein (30% and 32%) and three lipid concentrations (5.5%, 8.8% and 12.1%). Eleven fish, average weight 11.30 +/- 0.1 g, were held in each of 18 100-1 aquaria, supplied with recirculating freshwater. Each diet was randomly assigned to triplicate groups of fish and fed to apparent satiation, twice a day for 100 d. Piracanjuba fingerlings' daily weight gain (0.36-0.40 g), specific growth rate (1.43-1.51%), feed utilization and HSI were not influenced by dietary protein or lipid concentration. However, body composition was directly affected by dietary treatment. An increase in body fat and dry matter was observed as dietary lipid increased, for both dietary protein concentrations tested. The activity of FAS was depressed by increasing dietary fat levels but the G6PD activity did not differ among dietary treatments, although ME activity showed some regulation by dietary protein. These results indicate that an increase from 5.5% to 12.1% in the dietary lipid, at a dietary protein concentration of 30% or 32%, promotes body fat accumulation in piracanjuba fingerlings with no improvement in growth, suggesting that the lipid requirement for this species should be 5% or less, when raised for commercial purposes. However, the additional energy reserve from body fat accumulation could be desirable for piracanjuba fingerlings produced for stock enhancement. Purpose: To investigate the lipid-lowering activity of two metabolites of galangin, namely, galangin-3-Oβ-D-glucuronic acid (GG-1) and galangin-7-O-β-D-glucuronic acid (GG-2). Methods: Female Sprague-Dawley rats were orally administered with galangin. The two metabolites of galangin were isolated from urine sample and purified using Sephadex LH-20 and semi-preparative high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The structures of the metabolites were identified by analyzing spectroscopic data. Hypolipidemic activity was evaluated in HepG2 cells. The down- or upregulation of lipogenic genes was detected using real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR). Results: Both metabolites of galangin showed hypolipidemic activity. These activities are closely associated with the down-regulation of lipogenic genes such as SREBP-1a, SREBP-1c, and SREBP-2 transcription factors, and the downstream genes such as FAS, ACC, and HMGR were revealed by realtime qPCR data. Conclusion: The results show that both metabolites possess better lipid-lowering activities than galangin. These hypolipidemic activities are closely associated with inhibiting key genes or proteins that regulated the biosynthesis of both cholesterol and triglycerides.

Purpose: To investigate the effect of withaferin A (WFA) on the proliferation and migration of brain endothelial cells. Methods: BALB-5023 mouse microvascular cells were treated with a range of withaferin A (WFA) concentrations from 10 to 100 ng/mL. Dojindo’s CCK-8 cell proliferation kit was used for the analysis of cell proliferation. Transwell cell culture inserts were used to determine the migration potential of WFAtreated endothelial cells. Absorbance was measured at 450 nm on an enzyme-linked immunosorbent (ELISA) reader. Results: The results revealed a significant increase in the proliferation and migration of endothelial cells following treatment with a low concentration (30 ng/mL) of WFA compared with the higher concentration (> 10 ng/mL). The effect was further enhanced when WFA was used in combination with soluble Fas ligand (sFasL). Autocrine signaling of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) by endothelial cells was significantly increased following treatment with WFA or in combination with sFasL. WFA increased the expression of Fas on endothelial cells, suggesting the involvement of sFasL in the proliferation and migration of brain endothelial cells. Conclusion: Thus, WFA promotes the proliferation and migration of endothelial cells through increase in the expression of Fas and secretion of VEGF.

The complex and essential cell wall of Mycobacterium tuberculosis represents a plethora of new and old drug targets that collectively form an apparent mycobacterial “Achilles’ heel”. The mycolic acids are long-chain α-alkyl-β-hydroxy fatty acids (C70–90), which are unique to mycobacterial species, forming an integral component of the mycolyl–arabinogalactan–peptidoglycan complex. Their apparent uniqueness to the M. tuberculosis complex has rendered components of mycolic acid biosynthesis as powerful drug targets for specific tuberculosis (TB) chemotherapy. Here, I will discuss a contribution to TB drug discovery by deconvolution of the inhibitory mechanisms of a number of antitubercular compounds targeting mycolic acid biosynthesis. I will begin with the early days, elucidating the mode of action of ethionamide [1] and thiolactomycin [2], each targeting two separate components of the fatty acid synthase II (FAS-II) pathway. I will further discuss the recently discovered tetrahydropyrazo[1,5-a]pyrimidine-3-carboxamide compounds [3] which selectively target the essential, catalytically silent M. tuberculosis EchA6, providing a crucial lipid shunt between β-oxidation and FAS-II and supplying lipid precursors for essential mycolate biosynthesis. Finally, I will discuss the recent discovery of the mode of action of the indazole sulfonamides [4], inhibiting M. tuberculosis KasA by, a completely novel inhibitory mechanism.
