This study tested the preference of pintado catfish females (Pseudoplatystoma coruscans) for associating with well-fed or food-deprived males in simultaneous choice tests. Females were tested under three different treatments in which: (1) females could choose on the basis of multiple cues from the well-fed or food-deprived males (visual plus chemical); (2) only chemical cues were presented; (3) only visual cues were presented. Females chose well-fed males when chemical cues were presented (either visual + chemical or only chemical cues). When only visual cues were presented, females spent an equal amount of time in the choice apparatus compartments. Chemical signals, either directly through control of pheromone production, or indirectly by excreted metabolites, are likely to be an important source of information about nutritional condition in mating choice.

The adult female Culex quinquefasciatus midgut comprises a narrow anterior and a dilated posterior region, with epithelia composed of a monolayer of adjacent epithelial cells joined at the apical portion by septate junctions. Densely packed apical microvilli and an intricate basal labyrinth characterise each cell pole. Our morphological studies suggest that, during blood digestion, the anterior midgut region also participates in an initial absorptive stage which is probably related to the intake of water, salts and other small molecules. This activity peaked by 6 h after bloodmeal feeding (ABF) and ended approximately 18 h ABF, when the peritrophic membrane was already formed. After this time, absorption only occurred in the posterior region, with morphologic and biochemical evidence of high synthetic activity related to the secretion of proteases. Chymotrypsin, elastase, aminopeptidase, and trypsin reached their maximum activity at around 36 h ABF. Digestion products were apparently absorbed and transported to the basal labyrinth, from where they should be released to the hemolymph. At 72 h ABF, proteolysis had already ended and protein levels had returned to those observed before blood meal. The epithelium of the posterior region, however, did not return to its initial morphology, appearing quite disorganised. Additionally, from 48 h ABF onwards some epithelial cells showed morphological signals of apoptosis. (C) 2002 Elsevier B.V. Ltd. All rights reserved.
Female reproductive system of the decapitating fly Pseudacteon wasmanni Schmitz (Diptera : Phoridae)
Resumo:
Pseudacteon wasmanni is a South American decapitating fly that parasitizes workers of Solenopsis fire ants. We used light microscopy (historesin serial-sectioning stained with Haematoxylin/Eosin) and scanning electron microscopy to show and analyze internal and whole external views of the female reproductive system. All specimens analyzed (n = 9) by light microscopy showed post-vitellogenic oocytes inside the ovaries. The lack of typical follicles (oocyte-nurse cell complexes) in all specimens suggests that oogenesis occurs during the pupal stage. The total number of eggs found ranged from 31 to 280 (X = 142 +/- 73, SD). The egg has a slugform or torpedo shape (about 130 by 20 mum) with a pointed apex at the posterior pole as defined by the fly; the micropyle appears to be in a depression or invagination at the anterior pole. An acute hypodermic-like ovipositor is evaginated from the hard sclerotized external genitalia during egg laying. The existence of a muscular bulb associated with the end of the common oviduct suggests that the egg is injected into the ant's body by a strong contraction of the bulb which probably is stimulated by bending of several ventral sensilla. During contraction, the abdomen extends out along a large fold between the sixth and seventh tergites in such a way that the sclerotized genitalia is rotated ventrally into a slightly anterior orientation in preparation for oviposition. This study describes the morphology of salivary glands of Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus female ticks at beginning of feeding (24-48 h of attachment) and semi-engorged (4-5 days of attachment) to verify the degenerative characteristics of these organs and the secretory phase in which the process begins. At the beginning of feeding, secretion granules had been observed only in the cytoplasm of cells b, c(1), c(2), c(4) (type II acinus) and d (type III acinus), as well as large nuclei with regular and preserved morphology. In the semi-engorged females the acini presented few normal cells, few partially preserved ones, and the remaining ones in several stages of degeneration, that is, with retraction and cytoplasmic vacuolization, and nuclei with chromatin in several stages of condensation, picnotic and/or in fragmentation. In type I acinus and in the excretory ducts of the studied glands, at both feeding stages, no degenerative characteristic was observed. In females of R. (B.) microplus, the salivary glands degenerate asynchronically and precociously when compared with those of others tick's species. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The ovary of the Rhipicephalus sanguineus dog tick female is structurally formed by oocytes in five different stages of development (from I to V) and attached to the gonad by the pedicel. The present study evaluated possible toxic effects of the acaricide fipronil (Frontline (R)) on ovaries of semi-engorged ticks. Sixty partially fed females of R. sanguineus tick were distributed into four groups of 15 specimens each: I - non-treated; II, III and IV - treated with 1, 5 and 10 ppm of fipronil, respectively. The acaricide induced structural changes in the oocytes of individuals of the different treated groups ranging from the presence of a few small vacuoles to cellular death. In conclusion, germinative cells of semi-engorged R. sanguineus tick female are affected by different concentrations of fipronil leading to the reduction of tick fertility. (c) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. In general, the exocrine glands of social insects are structures involved in the chemical communication associated with social life. Here, we report the discovery of an unknown tegumental gland that is present in the female imagoes of Cornitermes cumulans and occurs next to the well-developed tergal glands that have previously been described. The tegumental glands release their secretion in the intersegmental membrane and are composed of bicellular units, a secretory cell and a canal cell, that are closely located to the epidermal cells in the inferior part of the eighth and ninth tergites. The ultrastructure of the glandular cells showed abundant smooth endoplasmic reticulum, suggesting that the secretion may be pheromonal, although its function is still unknown. These exocrine structures are facing the tergal glands, and we hypothesized that they act synergistically with the tergal glands to generate short-range attraction during tandem behavior. Microsc.
