It is suggested that a Pt/C cathodic catalyst for the direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) can be prepared with a pre-precipitation method, in which, H2PtCl6 is precipitated onto the carbon black as (NH4)(2)PtCl6 before H2PtCl6 is reduced to Pt. The electrocatalytic activity of this Pt/C-A catalyst for oxygen reduction is excellent because the Pt/C catalyst prepared with this pre-precipitation method possesses a small average particle size, low relative crystalinity and a large electrochemically active surface area. In addition, the pre-precipitation method is simple and economical and it can be used to prepare a Pt/C catalyst on a large scale.

A carbon supported Pt-Ru (Pt-Ru/C-T) catalyst can be prepared by a chemical reduction method in an aqueous solution with tetrahydrofuran (THF) at room temperature. The Pt-Ru particles possess high alloying, small average size and a low relative crystallinity. The electrocatalytic activity of the prepared Pt-Ru/C catalyst for methanol oxidation is much higher than that of commercial Pt-Ru/C (Pt-Ru/C-E) catalysts which have a similar average size and relative crystallinity, but the alloying extent is much lower than that in our Pt-Ru/C-T catalyst. The results illustrate that the alloying extent of Pt and Ru in the Pt-Ru/C catalyst plays an important role in the electrocatalytic activity of the Pt-Ru/C catalyst for methanol oxidation.

In this paper, it is reported for the first time that a carbon-supported Pd-P (Pd-P/C) catalyst for the anodic catalyst in the direct formic acid fuel cell (DFAFC) can be prepared. The Pd-P/C catalyst shows that its electrocatalytic activity and especially its stability for the oxidation of formic acid are much higher than that of a Pd/C catalyst. Therefore, the Pd-P/C catalyst may have practical applications in DFAFCs.

A new carbon composite electrode material, based on dispersing glassy carbon (GC) microparticles into methyltrimethoxysilane-derived sol, is described in the present paper. The resulting glassy carbon ceramic composite electrodes (GCCEs) combine the electrochemical properties of GC with the advantages of composite electrodes, and thus offer high electrochemical reactivity, low background current and are easy to prepare, modify and renew. The new material has a low double-layer capacitance and a wide potential window. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images indicate significant difference in the structure of GCCE and carbon ceramic composite electrode (CCE). The electrochemical properties and advantages of GCCE should find broad utility in electroanalysis.

The interaction mechanism between Eu3+ and microperoxidase-II (MP-11) in the aqueous solution was investigated using the UV-vis absorption spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry. It was found that one Eu3+ ion can coordinate with two carboxyl oxygen of two propionic acid groups of the heme group in the MP-11 molecule, leading the increase in the nonplanarity of the porphyrin ring and exposure degree of Fe(III) in the heme group. Therefore, the reversibility of the electrochemical reaction and the electrocatalytic activity of MP-11 for the reduction of oxygen are increased.

The report described a method of more stably dispersing oxidized carbon nanotubes (CNTs) by forming complex with polycation and the layer-by-layer self-assembly behavior of the complex with polyanion was studied. The properties of the self-assembled multilayer film containing carbon nanotubes were studied. Cyclic voltammetry, UV-vis-NIR spectroscopy, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy were used for characterization of film assembly. UV-vis-NIR spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry study indicated the uniform growth of the film. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy results showed that incorporating of carbon nanotubes in the polyelectrolyte multilayers; decreased in the electron-transfer resistance R, indicating more favorable electrochemical reaction interface. The electrocatalytic property of the multilayer modified electrode to NADH was investigated mainly with different numbers of the bilayers; and the results showed that along with the increase of the assembled bilayers the overpotential of NADH oxidation decreased. The detection lit-nit Could reach 6 mu M at a detection potential of 0.4 V.

A new amperometric biosensor for hydrogen peroxide was developed based on cross-linking horseradish peroxidase (HRP) by glutaraldehyde with multiwall carbon nanotubes/chitosan (MWNTs/chitosan) composite film coated on a glassy carbon electrode. MWNTs were firstly dissolved in a chitosan solution. Then the morphology of MWNTs/chitosan composite film was characterized by field-emission scanning electron microscopy. The results showed that MWNTs were well soluble in chitosan and robust films could be formed on the surface. HRP was cross-linked by glutaraldehyde with MWNTs/chitosan film to prepare a hydrogen peroxide biosensor. The enzyme electrode exhibited excellent electrocatalytic activity and rapid response for H2O2 in the absence of a mediator. The linear range of detection towards H2O2 (applied potential: -0.2 V) was from 1.67 x 10(-5) to 7.40 x 10(-4) M with correction coefficient of 0.998. The biosensor had good repeatability and stability for the determination of H2O2. There were no interferences from ascorbic acid, glucose, citrate acid and lactic acid.

A simple and convenient method for preparation of cobalt hexacyanoferrate (CoHCF) nanowires by electrodeposition was reported. Multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) were used as templates to fabricate CoHCF nanowires. MWNTs could affect the size of CoHCF nanoparticles and made them grow on the sidewalls of carbon nanotubes during the process of electrodeposition. Thus CoHCF nanowires could be obtained by this method. Field-emission scanning electron microscopy, UV-vis spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were used to characterize these nanowires. These results showed the CoHCF nanowires could be easily and successfully obtained and it gave a novel approach to prepare inorganic nanowires.

Multilayer films containing multiwall carbon nanotubes and redox polymer were successfully fabricated on a screen-printed carbon electrode using layer-by-layer (LBL) assembled method. UV-vis spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, field-emission scanning electron microscopy and electrochemical method were used to characterize the assembled multilayer films. The multilayer films modified electrodes exhibited good electrocatalytic activity towards the oxidation of ascorbic acid (AA). Compared with the bare electrode, the oxidation peak potential negatively shifted about 350 mV (versus Ag/AgCl). Furthermore, the modified screen-printed carbon electrodes (SPCEs) could be used for the determination of ascorbic acid in real samples.

The catalytic properties of silver nanoparticles supported on silica and the relation between catalytic activity of silver particles and the support (silica) size are investigated in the present article. The silver nanoparticles with 4 nm diameters were synthesized and were attached to silica spheres with sizes of 40, 78, 105 nm, respectively. The reduction of Rhodamine 6G (R6G) by NaBH4 was designed by using the SiO2/Ag core-shell nanocomposites as catalysts. The experimental results demonstrated that the catalytic activity of silica/silver nanoparticles depends on not only the concentration of catalysts (silver) but also the support silica size. Silver particles supported on small SiO2 spheres (similar to 40 nm) show high catalytic activity. Moreover, by making a comparison between the UV-vis spectra of the catalyst before and after the catalytic reaction, we found that the position of surface plasma resonance (SPR) peak of Ag nanoparticles changes little. The above results suggested that the size and morphology of silver particles were probably kept unchanged after the reduction of R6G and also implied that the catalytic activity of silver particles was hardly lost during the catalytic reaction.

Kinetic and electrochemical properties of icosahedral quasicrystalline Ti45Zr35Ni17Cu3 alloy powder as negative electrode material of Ni-MH battery have been investigated at different temperatures. The calculated results show that the apparent activation enthalpy of the charge-transfer reaction is 43.89 kJ mol(-1), and the activation energy of hydrogen diffusion is 21.03 kJ mol(-1). The exchange current density and the diffusion coefficient of hydrogen in the bulky electrode increase with increasing temperature, indicating that increasing temperature is beneficial to charge-transfer reaction and hydrogen diffusion. As a result, the maximum discharge capacity, activation property and high-rate dischargeability are greatly improved with increasing temperature. However, the charge retention and the cycling stability degrade with the increase of the temperature.

Prussian blue (PB) was modified onto surface of SiO2 nanoparticles and multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) by electrostatic assembled method. SiO2 nanoparticles and MWNTs firstly modified by polyelectrolyte exhibited positive charges and negative charged PB could be assembled onto them. UV-vs spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), field-emitted scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and electrochemical methods were used to characterize these composite nanomaterials. TEM and FE-SEM images showed that PB was easily assembled onto polyelectrolyte modified SiO2 nanoparticles and MWNTs. Moreover, PB on the surface of nanomaterials was stable and still kept its intrinsic electrochemical properties and high electrocatalytic activity towards hydrogen peroxide.

Tetrakis (N-methylpyridyl) porphyrinato] cobalt (CoTMPyP) and 1:12 silicotungstic acid (SiW12) were alternately deposited on a 4-aminobenzoic acid (4-ABA)-modified glassy carbon electrode through a layer-by-layer method. The resulting organic-inorganic hybrid films were characterized by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and UV/vis absorption spectroscopy. We proved that the prepared multilayer films are uniform and stable. SiW12-containing multilayer films (SiW12 as the outermost layer) exhibit remarkable electrocatalytic activity for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The kinetic constants for HER were comparatively investigated at different layers Of SiW12/CoTMPyP multilayer film-modified electrodes by hydrogen evolution voltammetry. In addition, rotating disk electrode (RDE) and rotating ring-disk electrode (RRDE) voltammetric methods confirm that SiW12/CoTMPyP (CoTMPyP as the outermost layer) multilayer films catalyze almost a two-electron reduction of O-2 to H2O2 in pH 1-6 buffer solutions. Furthermore, P2W18/CoTMPyP films were also assembled, and their catalytic activity for HER is very different from that Of SiW12/CoTMPyP multilayer films.

In this paper, a simple route for the preparation of Pt nanoparticles is described. PtCl62- and [tetrakis-(N-methylpyridyl)porphyrinato] cobalt (CoTMPyP) were assembled on a 4-aminobenzoic acid modified glassy carbon electrode through the layer-by-layer method. The three-dimensional Pt nanoparticle films are directly formed on an electrode surface by electrochemical reduction of PtCl62- sandwiched between CoTMPyP layers. Regular growth of the multilayer films is monitored by UV-vis spectroscopy. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy verifies the constant composition of the multilayer films containing Pt nanoparticles. Atomic force microscopy proves that the as-prepared Pt nanoparticles are uniformily distributed with average particle diameters of 6-10 nm. The resulting multilayer films containing Pt nanoparticles on the modified electrode possess catalytic activity for the reduction of dissolved oxygen. Rotating disk electrode voltammetry and rotating ring-disk electrode voltammetry confirm that Pt nanoparticle containing films can catalyze an almost four-electron reduction of O-2 to water in 0.5 M H2SO4 solution.

A novel sandwich-type compound, Na-12[Fe-4(H2O)(2)(As2W15O56)2].41H(2)O, has been synthesized. The compound was well-characterized by means of IR, UV-vis, W-183 NMR and elemental analyses. The compound crystallizes in the triclinic, P (1) over bar symmetry group. The structure of the compound is similar to that of Na-16[M-4(H2O)(2)(As2W15O56)(2)].nH(2)O (M = Cu, Zn, Co, Ni, Mn, Cd), and consists of an oxo-aqua tetranuclear iron core, [(Fe4O14)-O-III(H2O)(2)], sandwiched by two trivacant alpha-Wells-Dawson structural moieties, alpha-[As2W15O56]. Redoxelectrochemistry of the compound has been studied in buffer solutions at pH = 4.7 using polarography and cyclic voltammetry ( CV). The compound exhibited four one-electron couples associated with the Fe(III) center followed by three four-electron redox processes attributed to the tungsten-oxo framework. The compound-containing monolayer and multilayer films have been fabricated on a 4-aminobenzoic acid modified glassy carbon electrode surface by alternating deposition with a quaternized poly(4-vinylpyridine) partially complexed with [Os(bpy)(2)Cl](2+/-). CV, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), UV-vis spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy (AFM) have been used to characterize the multilayer films.
