Annotated almanac, 1779

Almanac with one folded interleaved page and minimal annotations of household activities on the calendar pages in the hands of John and Hannah Winthrop. The interleaved leaf contains notes of burials and baptisms for Cambridge in 1777 in John Winthrop's hand, and some notes of household activities in Hannah Winthrop's hand. The laid-in page contains notes about hay and some calculation. The folded interleaved leaf contains entries about household activities in Hannah Winthrop's hand, notes of burials and baptisms for Cambridge in 1779 begun in John Winthrop's hand and finished by Hannah Winthrop. Hannah's entries include, "died May the 3 Honorable Dr Winthrop 6h 1/2 Languishment Buried the 8."

College Book 3, 1636-1779

This volume was begun by Thomas Danforth, most likely around 1687, and contains transcriptions of donation records, property inventories, College laws, Overseers and Corporation minutes, and other official documents dating from 1636 onwards. By copying these documents into one volume, Danforth brought together a chronicle of Harvard's early history. Some of its content duplicates that of College Book 1, and other entries were copied from sources which no longer exist, including College Book 2, which was destroyed by fire in 1764. Danforth, who served as College Treasurer from 1650 to 1668, as Steward from 1668 to 1682, and again as Treasurer from 1682 to 1683, is believed to have created this volume as a precautionary measure during the great upheaval surrounding the 1684 annulment of the Royal Charter of the Massachusetts Colony and consequent dissolution of the Harvard Corporation. Some scholars believe he created College Book 3 in fear that the College's original records, from which it was largely derived and copied, might be destroyed.

Lectures on Hebrew and Oriental Literature, delivered in Harvard College between the years 1765 and 1782, by Stephen Sewall, AM, AAS Hancock Professor, Volume 1 1765-1767

The volume contains handwritten copies of lectures delivered by Sewall to students, an 1780 letter from Antoine Court de Gébelin written in French and glued into the front inside cover, a preface to the set of lectures, an autobiographical sketch of Sewall, and the statutes governing the Hancock Professorship of Hebrew and other Oriental Languages.

Professor Sewall's lectures on the Hebrew and Oriental languages, Vol. 3d, 1768-1780

This volume contains lectures delivered by Sewall to Harvard students. The volume begins with a continuation of Lecture XIV from Volume 2. The first complete lecture in the volume, Lecture XXXIV, was delivered August 29, 1768; May 18, 1772; September 23, 1776; and June 19 1780. The last lecture in the volume, Lecture LV was delivered February 11, 1771, November 7, 1774, and May 31, 1779.

Professor Sewall's lectures on the Hebrew and Oriental languages, Vol. 4th, 1771-1797

The first lecture in this volume, Lecture LVI, was delivered on March 4, 1771; November 28, 1774; and June 14, 1779. The last lecture in the volume, Lecture LXXII was delivered in December 19, 1774; August 17, 1778; and September 16, 1782. The volume also contains a table of the variation of the magnetic needle observed at Cambridge from November 1796 to August 1797.

This one-page printed form appoints Thomas Wigglesworth as the "true and lawful Attorney" for Stephen Sewall. The form is notarized by Samuel Barrett and witnessed by Barrett and his daughter Peggy Barrett.

Handwritten copy of a January 23, 1768 letter from Mehetabel Preble to her son Stephen Sewall transcribed by Sewall. The bottom of the page is cut off and some text is missing. In the letter, Preble mentions Sewall's news of the birth of her granddaughter, the death of one of her sons, and discusses her health and approaching death, and the absence of God's "divine light." The item includes the note: "NB. The above letter was rec'd 18th March, 1768. My mother died the 4th day of the same month," and an extract from a February 29, 1768 letter from "Brother Crosby" regarding Preble's illness and anticipation of death.

C. Daily pocket journal of John and Hannah Winthrop, 1766-1779

Small printed daily pocket journal repurposed by both John and Hannah between 1766 and 1779 to record household accounts including livestock pasturing, income received, and payments to servants, merchants, and tradesmen for food, livestock, clothing, linen, etc. Many of the pages are unused. The January-April pages contain account records from 1766-1779, one page in June has a few accounting notes from September 1779, the rest of June-November is empty, and three books are listed on a November page. The last three calendar pages contain lists of books in Hannah's handwriting dated 1773 and August 1768.

VIII. Harvard College Papers, 1st series, Volume 8, 1815-1820 (bulk 1815-1819)

The eighth volume of College Papers contains original documents dating from 1815 to 1819, spanning the tenures of president John Thornton Kirkland and treasurer John Davis. Much of the volume consists of general administrative correspondence exchanged between Kirkland and Davis. It also contains a document from 1820.
